When you design a building that will be used by lots of people, like a tower block, you need to make sure that the building has the correct level of fire prevention and fire protection equipment. In instances where this isn’t the case, tragedies like the Grenfell Fire can happen. The importance of passive and active fire protection methods are vital for the safety of the intended occupants, but how can you ensure they’re going to be safe?

FasTop SL45 self smoothing polyurethane resin was used as a 5mm thick seamless floor finish for this large hospital kitchen in Sydney, Australia. This facility is extremely busy producing over 2 thousand meal a day which have to be moved around the hospital quickly on special trolleys. This type of traffic meant the flooring had to be able to withstand regular wheeled traffic and footfall and be safe and cleanable within a hospital environment.

The Hepworth Gallery required access to their low pitched roofs to facilitate safe working at height when carrying out external glazing cleaning and general maintenance. The concrete design of the building resulted in a thin roof construction, so The Gallery needed to ensure that any systems installed were fit-for-purpose, fully tested and compatible. With such a prestigious and architecturally prominent building, it was imperative that the chosen system also suited the design of the building.

When Bodmin Community Fire Station in Cornwall needed a hardwearing, hygienic, and safe flooring solution for their fitness room and gym, they turned to international flooring specialists Gerflor. The East London Hotel is positioned in the heart of Bethnal Green, London. The Ascent Aluminium fixed ladder access system was specified to create a permanent safe access route to the roof for maintenance personnel. As the ladder provided access between two membrane roofs there was a requirement to specify non-penetrative support feet at both head & base. Hoops were provided throughout for fall protection and the ladder was designed in accordance with BS 4211:2005+A1 2008 and manufactured in accordance with CE 1090 factory production control procedures.

A Bradford railway bridge near a junior school needed a proven solution to keep road users and the young pedestrians safe as part of a renovation. The solution for this project was the use of our Trief GST2 kerbs to protect both the footpath and the parapet to each side of the railway bridge and to stop vehicles from deviating onto the pavement and, ultimately, accidental incursion onto the railway lines. Coopers solution was to install over 100 SmokeStop smoke curtain barriers. Concealed within the ceiling voids of each of the 39 floors, the SmokeStop smoke curtain barriers were developed to deploy in the event of fire, channelling smoke away from occupant and out of the building. This effective strategy for containing and channelling smoke would ensure that Gherkin’s 41 floors were protected from filling with smoke and provide occupants with a safe means of escape.

Due to the success of the door, 4 Speedors and 4 roller shutters were installed in 1992. Building contractor Eversley Building Services Ltd required a roof access ladder for emergency use in the event of a fire. However, the application constraints presented many challenges, in particular the small skylight aperture. As such, a particularly compact loft ladder was needed. Furthermore, because the loft ladder would be used during an emergency, it had to be easy-to-operate and safe for its occupants. Designing for these major weather events is a balancing act. The world-famous Eden Project in Cornwall attracts one million visitors each year. Gripsure non-slip decking is used in many areas at the Eden Project, with some decks being in place for 15 years. Our products have helped contribute to the attraction’s excellent health and safety record. Treetop Canopy Walkway The Eden Project installed a Treetop Canopy Walkway in the Humid Tropics Biome to give visitors a unique opportunity to experience the rainforest from among the treetops. The walkway needed to be accessible to wheelchairs and buggies, as well as being able to cope with the heavy footfall from the tens of thousands of visitors that visit Eden every year. The Eden Project's Humid Tropics Biome is designed to house over 2,000 species of tropical plants in an environment that will allow them to reach their full potential. This means that the paths, floor surfaces and bridges can be damp. In this severe environment, which is maintained at 30°C and 60% humidity, materials degrade more quickly than in a normal external environment. The Eden Project has strict requirements for sustainable, renewable materials, and a modest budget. Rather than using conventional decking that becomes slippery when wet, Eden approached Gripsure. We supplied them with Gripsure Contemporary non-slip decking. The profile is a plain deck board with two non-slip aggregate inserts that deliver a high slip resistance with a sleek finish. Safety is top of the agenda for a large attraction such as The Eden Project. They required something durable, low maintenance, and above all safe. Eden were delighted with the outcome: "We are very happy with the added safety the product brings for our visitors and we have received excellent service from Gripsure" Canopy Rope Bridge Visitors to The Eden Project can stride out with confidence – even on the new wobbly bridge! The 23-metre aerial rope bridge stretches between two of the 50 metre-high Rainforest Biome’s tallest trees. Fitted with Gripsure non-slip decking, it has a safe and hardwearing surface, so explorers can enjoy a new perspective without any slip ups. The Eden Project selected Gripsure’s Yellow Balau hardwood anti-slip decking. These boards are extremely strong and hardwearing, boasting an expected in-service life of more than 50 years. Gripsure non-slip decking will help visitors safely experience a hot, steamy rainforest as they travel to the treetops. Bamboo Steps Our most recent collaboration with Eden was the installation of Gripsure Bamboo non-slip decking in the Malaysian hut and other areas of the Rainforest Biome. The facilities team chose Bamboo decking for its sustainability credentials, which are so important to the Eden ethos. Moso bamboo only takes 5-7 years to reach maturity and is a net carbon sink over the life span of the product. The non-slip decking boards will provide a safe surface for Eden’s visitors for many years.

The flooring requirement at this museum in Leicester stipulated a safe and cleanable seamless finish to exhibit the discovery of Richard III's remains and the story behind the Battle of Bosworth. A simple black finish was specified in keeping with the design of this facility. The exhibition takes visitors through the history of the Wars of The Roses and then fast forwards 500 years to a Leicester car park where a discovery was made. Resuflor self smoother was installed at 3mm thickness across the floors and this was sealed Resupen WB Satin Black to give the desired sheen finish.

The Ascent Aluminium companionway / ships ladder system was specified to create a permanent safe access route to the roof of refrigeration units within Aldi stores for maintenance personnel. A companionway was chosen as it is deemed preferable to a vertical ladder where frequent access is required. The ladder designed in accordance with BS 4211:2005 + A1 2008 was manufactured in accordance with CE 1090 factory production control procedures. The ladders have been installed within around 700 stores across the UK.

Tobermore’s Secura Grand Retaining Wall facilitated the creation of a new shared-use route in Edinburgh. Secura Grand is used as a retaining wall system which also supports a bridge used for walking and cycling. This new path provides a safe, fun and convenient route around the City for pedestrians and cyclists alike. The vital community link connects the Shore in Leith with Portobello Promenade. The route forms part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s Family Network as set out in the Active Travel Action Plan.

Mote Park is a 450-acre green space within the town of Maidstone, Kent. The expansive park has woodland, grasslands and rivers all surrounding a 30 acre lake. The park attracts over one million visitors a year and provides source for a range of activities such as water sports, family fun days, dog walking and wildlife spotting. To safely secure the perimeter of the new play area we supplied 230 metres of Anti Trap Bow Top fencing and a number of matching gates.

Renovations to an existing car park were undertaken using the Koster range of epoxy flooring systems. Kennington CE Academy is a busy primary school located in the Ashford suburb of Kennington.
