This stunning Grade II* Surrey property was built in 1932 by renowned architects Connell, Ward and Lucas and is a rare example of the Modernist Movement in architecture.Described at the time as ‘more like an invention by Picasso than a house’ the building was revolutionary for its time and divided opinion. Built using reinforced concrete with a flat roof it is designed to prioritise light and space.The windows are key to the original concept which is based on the movement of the sun – in the morning the breakfast room gets the early sun and the living room benefits from the light in the late afternoon.Windows from the Clement EB20 range were manufactured and polyester powder coated in a matt Pastel Blue. The Clement EB20  double and single doors include Clement’s multi-point locking door system which can achieve PAS4:2016 in accordance with approved Document Q. 

Clickfix sculpts the light in royal art & design studioBrett Martin supplied the polycarbonate panels used to glaze the striking northlights in the roof exhibition space in the new Battersea campus of the Royal College of Art, London which the college described as ‘the most significant campus development in their history’The architects brief was to bring together art, design, science and technology in one place and the building has been certified as BREEAM excellent.Marlon Clickfix pans across 2 vertical sections in the top floor of the 4-storey Studio Building dedicated to traditional art and design disciplines.The product was selected due to its ease of installation, thermal insulation and high levels of natural light which allows for large, glazed areas. The bright space and the sheer size of the glazing in this building illustrates the benefits of the product wonderfully and as stated by the guardian “The space beneath the big triangular skylights is glorious”. 

The challenge was to incorporate a green roof finish both flat and curved to the roof areas. The roof pitch being as steep as 45 degrees in places, a pitch not conducive with a green roof system. ABG used their expertise in green roof and slope stabilisation to make the curved green roof possible. The system incorporated a series of anchor points, reinforcement geogrid (Trigrid), and geocellular technology (Erosaweb) to retain growing medium on each roof. The Green Roof system incorporates a SMART rain sensor and automated irrigation pipe system with each finger haveving its own dedicated mains operated tank

The 55,000m2 roof area of one of London's busiest train stations was in an advanced stage of deterioration. IKO PLC liaised with roofing contractors Weatherproofing Advisors to refine the specification. Working with the public, and in a commuter environment, Weatherproofing Advisors had the added challenge of completing the project through one of the worst winters in 50+ years.

As much as they loved their house as it was, they finally made the decision to redevelop mostly the back of the house. This renovation included not only a bespoke rectangular rooflight, but also custom made blinds which perfectly fit the roof window.Brightening up a 1930’s home with natural lightingA house built in the ‘30’s isn’t usually the brightest of homes. These houses often come with few or small windows which don’t allow natural lighting to fully penetrate a room, causing dark spots and corners all around the house. This is why Graham and his family wanted natural daylight to be a focal point in the renovation of their mid-century home, saying “Light was really important to make an area spacious and airy.”. They sure lit up the place by choosing one of the biggest singular bespoke rooflights in the size 3000 mm by 1000 mm.The perks of a big custom Vario by Velux skylightBecause the Gray family opted for such a big rectangular skylight, it let in a bunch of light. We asked Graham what he loved the most about the rooflight; “During the day you are looking at the sunlight being brought in, and then during the night you are looking at the wondrous sky and the stars. And if I’m honest during the summer I can’t see us using any light other than the light coming from the VELUX rooflight.”. Another bright side to our rooflights is that they don’t require days or even weeks of work. Winchester Cathedral, a place of worship for over 900 years, has been brought up to modern accessibility standards with a light-filled passenger lift from Stannah. The installation now sits comfortably alongside the fine craftsmanship within the extraordinary Grade I Listed building. This is one of the first passenger lifts to be installed in a medieval cathedral in the UK, paving the way for other heritage buildings to offer step-free access for visitors. 

Raithwaite Hall is a 5 star, 45 bed boutique hotel set in 85 acres of wooded valleys within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The hotel offers terraced views of the landscape and across the Whitby coastline. A new extension was designed that is built against the hillside with stepped landscaped areas around the new building and an intensive green roof terrace to help blend the structure in with the surrounding gardens.The intensive green roof terrace is installed directly above a new function and dining room and required a specialised design to accommodate the additional loading and provide the necessary drainage for the turf lawn.     By utilising a multi-purpose geocomposite roof drainage board, the green roof system could be achieved to meet the project specific requirements. The ABG Deckdrain 2540S-NW20XUV product offers a lightweight option that delivers the equivalent drainage capacity of 300mm of drainage stone in a 25mm layer that weighs over a 100 times less per square metre. The lightweight drainage layer is supplied in rolls and is fast to install and move into position. The Deckdrain layer includes an integrated filter geotextile bonded to the top of the cuspated core. This prevents the growing media layer from intruding into the drainage void and filters the soil to prevent clogging. The Deckdrain is made from a high strength HDPE core that supports the 200mm deep layer of growing media required for the intensive green roof installation with deeper root systems. The underside of the product is impermeable and provides additional protection to the liquid waterproofing membrane. A green roof surface finish further helps to prolong the lifespan of the waterproofing layer and prevent UV degradation. The large grassed area on the podium also reduces surface water run-off and the grass is protected against waterlogging via the efficient drainage board layer. The shallow drainage build-up required also reduces the height of the steps onto the terrace and the associated cost of stone flags. The completed installation encompasses a 20mm Roofdrain drainage & reservoir board to support a secondary smaller sedum roof area, as well as Deckdrain layers installed for structural drainage to the surfaces around the patio slab and retaining wall areas.ABG provided a full green roof project design, installation and maintenance service for the project.

The brief was to replace an existing roof that had reached the end of its serviceable life, with a high performance waterproofing solution and upgrade the insulation in order to meet the University’s energy efficiency policy.

With the aim of making a somewhat dated house welcoming and comfortable for a young family from Vilnius, the architect Ieva Prunskaitė of the Prusta studio redesigned the interior. The minimal, clean design combines functionality with beauty. Its focus is on simple lines and light spaces, devoid of clutter. Wood, plaster and cement are the three elements that are used throughout the house.The predominantly white walls with ECLISSE Syntesis Flush Hinged white doors contrast beautifully with the wooden flooring. There are also wooden accents across the white kitchen cabinets and wooden panelling defining storage areas and a cloakroom between the main door and the living room.The interior is also interspersed with accents of grey and black in the form of the black marble worktop and black chairs in the kitchen, the minimalist wood burning stove, grey accent wall and grey sofa in the sitting room and a decorative black metal screen with a geometric design separating the master bedroom with the ensuite.The minimalist style of the ECLISSE Syntesis Flush Hinged doors integrate perfectly into this interior being almost invisible, whilst being accented with sleek black handles echoing the colour scheme throughout.The ECLISSE Syntesis® Flush Hinged Door is part of the Syntesis® Flush Collection. Surespan designed and manufactured Glazed Roof Hatches with fixed glazed sections and a vertical end door for the 79&Park residential.The projectOscar Properties commissioned BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) to design and construct 79& Park residential building. The building is located on the edge of Gärdet, a treasured national park. The architects made conscious decisions throughout the process to provide a sensitive, respectful building with exceptional residences with spectacular views.All Oscar Properties projects aim to add value to the city and the surrounding environment.  79&Park architecture appears like an extension of the park, a gentle hillside seamlessly blending into the nature around it. The project was named Europe’s best housing project in the Internationally recognised real estate competition The International Property Awards.ProductSurespan designed and manufactured multiple glazed roof access hatches in various sizes including 2200 x 2115, 3160 x 1553, and 4175 x 1025.  As part of the glazed roof hatches a vertical door was designed for easy access to the roof spaces. The final glazed hatches were finished off with a polyester powder-coated finish.  Features:These glazed roof hatches feature a specialist sensory control panel. A 1-minute warning sound is activated when rain is detected, and a movement sensor prevents the closing of the hatch. Other features include opening in case of a fire and a keycode pad for exiting.

This is a metal roof coating & liquid gutter lining project carried out at Oxford Brookes University. The roof was power washed and the gutters cleaned before application. The gutters were treated with Liquasil's rust primer to prevent further rusting, before the seamless, silicone Gutterseal system was applied. The roof was coated with a single coat of Metalseal 20 in Goosewing Grey.

LAMILUX designed, supplied and installed eight LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 mono-pitch rooflights at Oundle School Sports Centre. Seven of the rooflights, were positioned over the 50 metre swimming pool, adding an abundance of natural light, with special sun protective glazing to eliminate overheating. A special coating was applied to the aluminium profiles to protect them from corrosion within the chlorine environment. The eighth rooflight, an 18m x 6m trapeze shape, illuminates the atrium at the flagship of the school’s sports masterplan.

Early in 2022, The Wee House Company finalised abespoke, modular-built, 3-bedroom home measuring94 square metres on the Hebridean Isle of Islay. Pewter Grey coloured TapcoSlate Classic roofing slate waschosen mainly because of a planning permissionstipulation for a tiled roof on the island, but the ownerswere pleasantly surprised by its natural appearance whichcomplements their home and blends into the stunningsurroundings.

As part of the exhibit, Gradus was chosen to provide LED stair edgings for a custom-built theatre to showcase two films from Rosalind Nashashibi, one of the shortlisted artists. Her films use the camera as an eye to convey moments and events, merging everyday observations with fantastical and mythological elements. Electrical Gaza (2016) captures the self-contained life of Gaza, removed from the world yet somehow enchanted and Vivian’s Garden (2017) depicts the relationship between two artists, who are mother and daughter, in the connected houses they share in a jungle garden in Panajachel, Guatemala.

Featuring a curved aluminum pilaster and headrail, the 10mm toughened float glass doors and dividers look stunning in Traffic White from the Prospec standard glass collection. Our Marathon Laminate Wet lockers are also finished in Prospec White and give users the space to lock their belongings away while immersing themselves in the one of a kind spinning experience. In a mix of 2 and 3 tier configurations, the lockers are secured with Prospec OCS electronic code locks.

Utilising the same bricks as were being laid by the bricklayers to the masonry walls, FastClad supplied the cladding to the balconies so that there was a seamless match.Collecting bricks from site to ensure that they were from the same production run, the slips were cut and bonded to our profiled backing board at our Leicester factory.These boards were then returned to site for mechanical fix to the balcony structures and pointed in a lime mortar to match that of the cement mortar being used by the bricklayers at an off-site compound.The balconies were then craned into position and fixed to the structure.

The project took place across a 21 m2 double garage roof that required updating and maintenance work as it had simply been left to the elements and was no longer fit for purpose.  Rob Rough, Director of PPM Care Ltd stated Degaflex that he was “really pleased with the outcome and impressed with how easy it is to install Degaflex” he went on to add that he would have traditionally used GRP, however, he will be “using Degaflex going-forwards”.

Architect: Simon Gill Architects. The brief for this project in Putney was to modernise the ground floor of this red-brick detached house, create a larger dining room and better connect the inside of the home with the garden. The end result is a complete transformation. Gone are the compressed spaces and smaller rooms and in their place is a large open-plan living area with seamless connection between the lounge, kitchen and dining room. These open plan spaces are filled with natural light thanks to a combination of Grand Slider II sliding doors and huge fixed frame picture windows.

Electrically Hinged Rooflight Provides Effective Light Source To Grade 2 Listed Barn Case Study

The roof on Bede Primary School and Community Centre in Gateshead was in great need of repair. Installing roofing contractors Hodgson and Allon liaised with IKO to refine the specification to meet the client’s requirements. This included a full strip and re-cover with a flame free system to carry a 20 year guarantee. IKO chose an IKO Mach One single layer bituminous system incorporating a site specific cut-to-fall system. This project was a complex roof replacement system with multi-trades required for specialist operations.

Over 1,200m² of Protan SE 1.2mm PVC single-ply membrane was installed in the Protan Vacuum roof system at Butlins Splashworld, Skegness. The roof system required no mechanical restraint or adhesives (except for around the roof perimeter and penetrations), as it relies upon the wind to keep the membrane in place with the help of Protan vacuum vents installed at locations designed by Protan's Technical Services Department. William Bird of Protan partner roofing contractor, Roofdec Ltd, commented, "Protan's vacuum roof system is quicker to install than conventional fully-adhered or mechanically-fixed systems."

The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire is recognised across the globe for its innovative research across a number of scientific fields. The lab employs over 1600 scientists and, as its work has developed, it became clear there was a need for a new, flexible space for testing the latest equipment. Oxford Architects created an iconic, curved design for the R105 Facilities Support Building and, in a break from the standard metal-clad facades of the surrounding buildings, specified a colourful façade using Kingspan Day-Lite Klick wall lights.

A large extra care facility in the West Midlands with a contemporary architects design needed a roof to match.

Despite the challenges posed by completing construction and opening during the first lockdown, the new Skelton Lake Motorway Services project opened in March 2020 as planned, providing essential services to hauliers and key workers travelling during the start of the pandemic. The project incorporates an extensive green roof build-up to minimise the visual and physical impacts of the development on the surrounding country park and to enhance the biodiversity of the project.The wildflower green roof design provides multiple environmental benefits; including provision of a new habitat for local insect and bird life, helping to lower the site’s carbon emissions by absorbing heat emitted from the building into the cooler roof surface - reducing the air conditioning demand in the summer months. The green roof build-up also provides a level of insulation against heat loss in winter.

Ibstock Place School opened its newly built refectory in 2021. Designed by Maccreanor Lavington the competition-winning design is a dedicated space for the most communal part of the school. With a high ceiling and intricate woodwork, the open space is functional but uplifting.The high-level roof lanterns form a chimney to pull out hot air during the summer as well as fill the space with soft natural light, which is perfectly accented by acoustic dampening panels of oak.Handmade Bricks from Freshfield Lane were used in the construction of the cloister and work perfectly with the school’s previous uses of brick. Additionally, the choice of bricks helps set the building within its tranquil garden setting. The handmade Freshfield Lane brick helps the building age gracefully into the landscape while retaining a notable elegance. This sophisticated taste is mirrored inside by soft copper notes and long, hanging light fittings.

Set in beautiful grounds this former coach house is nestled in a picturesque Cotswold village.This stunning orangery was the perfect solution for the family who wanted to have a light filled room, from where they could sit and enjoy their garden throughout the year.The stone-coloured exterior paint finish of the David Salisbury orangery is the perfect complement to the sandy-coloured Cotswold stone and stone roof of the main building.The glass lantern benefits from Pilkington Activ™ Blue self-cleaning glass, which has both self-cleaning and solar-control properties plus high performing thermally insulating Pilkington K Glass™ S as the inner pane of glass.The result of this carefully designed addition to a home that already oozes character and charm is a light filled environment that can be use throughout the Summer and Winter months, where the family can sit in total comfort.Images courtesy of David Salisbury.

Degaflex Fire Rated Roofing system providing a watertight finish, either smooth or textured. This installation was required to overcome a long standing issue with water ingress / leaking through the roof.The building was an outhouse in Snodland, Kent. The roof had been leaking for some time, Degaflex was installed onto a felt substrate by London GRP Roofing Ltd.Stephen Knuckey, the Director of London GRP Roofing Ltd. posted on LinkedIn ‘Our #Degaflex overlay. Safe to say I’m extremely pleased with the finish on this. Being a felt overlay and turning out this smooth, I’ll be looking forward to applying it directly to an OSB deck.’

The metal roof was first prepared using high powered jet washing equipment, to remove loose and flaking materials. Liquasil corrosion primer was applied to the corroded cut edges and the entire roof was sprayed with a single coat of Metalseal 20. The metal box gutter was heavily corroded. The loose and flaking material was removed and Liquasil’s Corrosion Primer was applied all along the gutter. The joints in the gutter were sealed with Liquasil’s unique Non-Sag Sealer and then the entire gutter was coated with Liquasil One to provide a seamless gutter finish.

This 10,000 sq metre roof was in need of complete refurbishment and Liquasil's Metalseal was specified because it provided all parties with complete protection, with a Latent Defects Insurance Guarantee being provided upon completion. Cut edge corrosion was treated and the roof cleaned prior to the application of the single-coat Metalseal 20. The unique Liquasil Latent Defects Guarantee covers safe access, workmanship, materials and specifier's professional management fees, along with Professional Design. BBA Approval adds even more reassurance to the specifier.

Project: London Architectural Glazed approached Surespan to design and manufacture bespoke roof access and AOV Hatch. The project had a requirement for a huge 4700 x 1300 Smoke vent with access however due to EN12101-2 testing, Surespan only has CE Certification up to 1800 x 3000mm. Surespan designed a solution which involved combining a large 3628 x 1300 electric roof hatch with a separate 1300 x 1218mm SRHE/AOV unit combined into one frame.

The McLaren Technology Centre hosts a variety of diverse environments including; manufacturing facilities, a futuristic wind tunnel, restaurant, pool, gymnasium, museum, visitor centre, and exhibition and conference areas. Surespan was chosen to design and engineer the making of a 70m diameter glazed roof structure that would act as the roof for the visitor's centre. The structure has two fire escape hatches which would be used in the case of an emergency. The team at Surespan were proud to have been selected for such a project because of their superior engineering expertise and unique skills.

The circular building, where legends like The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd began, was redeveloped and reopened in 2006. FOAMGLAS® insulation was used for the floor, the façade and the flat roof, ensuring water and vapour resistance despite the open nature of the façade. It is also non-combustible and waterproof.
