Vacuum Glazing UK

Preserving the unique charm and historical significance of heritage buildings is a top priority for architects and specifiers. However, incorporating modern advancements and energy-efficient solutions into these structures can often pose challenges. In this case study, we highlight the successful collaboration between VGUK and Kingsrock Joinery in restoring a heritage building in London, where LandVac Vacuum Insulated Glazing played a pivotal role in transforming the existing heritage windows.TL:DRHeritage Building Restoration London: Transforming Heritage Windows with LandVac Vacuum GlazingProject Overview:Heritage building restoration in collaboration with Kingsrock JoineryIntegration of LandVac Vacuum Insulated Glazing into heritage windowsOvercoming resistance from planners for energy-efficient solutionsAchievements and Benefits:Visual Impact: Stunning visuals of heritage vacuum glazing units in the restored building Authentic and visually appealing windows that maintain the building's characterThermal Performance: U-value achieved: approximately 0.95 W/m2K Narrow unit width of 8.3mm Exceptional insulation properties reduce heat transfer Improved energy efficiency and reduced energy consumption Enhanced occupant comfort and thermal comfortConclusion:Successful integration of LandVac Vacuum Glazing in heritage windowsOvercame initial scepticism from plannersStunning windows with improved thermal performance and visual appealContributed to energy efficiency and occupant comfortA collaborative success with Kingsrock Joinery in preserving heritage while embracing modern advancementsProject Overview:Working closely with Kingsrock Joinery, we embarked on a mission to preserve the heritage of a remarkable building while embracing modernity. The challenge we faced was the initial resistance from planners who believed that vacuum glazing would clash with the traditional aesthetic of the building. However, Jeremy Murphy, the owner of Kingsrock, strongly believed in the harmonious integration of modern technology with the authentic look and feel of traditional architecture.Solving Resistance with Stunning Results:To address the planners' concerns, we proposed the use of flush casement windows glazed with LandVac Vacuum Insulated Glazing. By employing toughened LandVac Vacuum Glazing, Kingsrock was able to achieve a slight distortion that added a touch of authenticity to the windows. The final result was a perfect blend of modernity and heritage, enhancing the visual appeal of the building while meeting the required energy efficiency standards.Visual Impact:The restored building stands as a testament to the successful integration of LandVac Vacuum Glazing into heritage windows. The stunning visuals showcase the seamless combination of modern technology and the architectural authenticity of the building. The heritage vacuum glazing units perfectly preserve the character of the structure while providing enhanced thermal performance.Thermal Performance:Beyond its remarkable visual impact, LandVac Vacuum Glazing delivered outstanding thermal performance. With a U-value of approximately 0.95 W/m2K, the narrow unit width of 8.3mm ensures minimal heat transfer between the interior and exterior. This significant improvement in thermal insulation not only enhances energy efficiency but also contributes to increased occupant comfort and reduced energy consumption. Conclusion:The successful integration of LandVac Vacuum Glazing into heritage windows for the restoration of a London heritage building stands as a testament to the possibilities of merging modern technology with architectural preservation. By overcoming initial resistance from planners, we achieved stunning windows that seamlessly blend heritage aesthetics with exceptional thermal performance. The project not only enhances the visual appeal of the building but also contributes to energy efficiency and occupant comfort. We extend our gratitude to Kingsrock Joinery for their collaboration and expertise in manufacturing and installing these outstanding heritage vacuum glazing units. Together, we have demonstrated that preserving our architectural heritage can coexist harmoniously with the benefits of modern advancements in glazing technology.

Canal Side Cottages: Restoring History with Traditional Timber Windows & Doors

Gowercroft Joinery Limited

Discover the remarkable transformation of Draycott's Canal Side Cottages, a project that has breathed new life into six derelict 200-year-old cottages in Derbyshire. Led by the dedicated efforts of the Derbyshire and Sandiacre Canal Trust and local volunteers, this restoration project has not only created a stunning residential development but also a historical tourist attraction.Gowercroft products used:Chatsworth Sliding Sash WindowsMelbourne DoorsHardwick Casement WindowsRed GrandisOriginally built in the 1820s on the banks of the old Derby Canal, these cottages served as homes for mill workers and local families. However, by 1985, they had fallen into disrepair, on the verge of demolition. In 2017, the Derbyshire and Sandiacre Canal Trust stepped in to rescue the cottages as part of their ambitious plan to restore the disused canal and the surrounding area. With the vision of turning these cottages into a vibrant mixed-use complex, the Trust launched a £650k appeal. The goal was to create three 2-3 bedroom dwellings, a canal side café, commercial spaces for leisure companies, and a museum showcasing the canal's history and the lives of mill workers.ADDC Architects, renowned conservation experts, were entrusted with the task of designing the conversion. They skillfully worked around the intricate history of the original brick buildings, which had gone through multiple alterations and rebuilds in the 19th century. The architects aimed to preserve the unique character of the cottages while ensuring a functional layout suitable for their new purpose. The restoration process involved an incredible community effort, with local tradesmen, contractors, and volunteers coming together to bring the cottages back to life. The extensive work included clearing vegetation and debris, erecting scaffolding, reinforcing timbers, and salvaging original bricks and slates for rebuilding. One crucial aspect of the restoration was the installation of new timber windows. Gowercroft Joinery, a reputable local manufacturer with expertise in heritage and restoration projects, supplied the traditional Chatsworth sliding sash windows for the canal-facing elevations. These windows perfectly matched the original designs, featuring slim finger-jointed frames and Georgian styled glazing bars. At the rear, Hardwick casement windows were installed to maintain a utilitarian look consistent with the building's history.Crafted from solid Red Grandis hardwood, the windows offered both elegance and energy efficiency. The bespoke curved top casements faithfully reinstated, and Melbourne hardwood doors further enhanced the joinery and timber craftsmanship throughout the cottages. The restored Canal Cottages now stand as a symbol of the Trust's broader vision to revive the 13-mile canal and its surrounding areas. Once completed, the canal restoration will create a 25-mile cruising ring, connecting to thousands of miles of navigable waterways across the UK. It will provide opportunities for outdoor activities, such as angling, canoeing, and cycling while promoting wildlife conservation and improving the well-being of local residents.By being a part of this project, Gowercroft Joinery has not only contributed to the architectural heritage but also supported the revival of the Derby Canal, acting as a catalyst for regeneration in the city centre. The Canal Side Cottages showcase the perfect synergy between traditional craftsmanship and modern performance, ensuring years of comfort and enjoyment for all those who experience them.

The windows employ a very thin profile section, achieved with Reynaers CS 38-SL systems, and have a decorated, perforated aluminium screen to the side. This uses an insulated panel that can be opened from the inside for ventilation. The lower level screens are bronze-coloured anodised aluminium, while the upper screens are powder coated.

The customer wanted to build a deck on the first storey of a period building in Chicago The windows opening out on to the roof were positioned considerably higher than the rooftop itself, which meant that the structure deployed to support the deck would also need to raise it up almost a metre to meet the threshold. We recommended a number of our heavy-duty Megapads ranging from 711mm to 876mm to account for the gradual fall in the roof. The customer chose not to envelope the pedestals because he liked the industrial look created, in keeping with downtown Chicago.

Style - Moveable Partition Specialists

Rushcliffe Oaks is a new crematorium situated in open countryside in Nottinghamshire. Partitioning specialist, Style worked with contractor, A&S Enterprises to increase the functionality of the space between entrance lobby and the chapel.A Dorma Hüppe Variflex semi-automatic glass moveable wall was chosen as the best option, allowing the chapel to be quickly closed off from the main entrance area whenever a funeral is in progress. Minimising possible disturbance, Variflex delivers an impressive 50dB acoustic rating, with further privacy being offered by the inclusion of automatic blinds that are integrated into the individual glass panels.Providing a sensitive and calming space to remember loved ones and say goodbye in a peaceful and tranquil setting, Rushcliffe Oak Crematorium is set in beautifully landscaped grounds. The environmentally conscious facility uses renewable energy sources and is one of the first in the country to invest in innovative all-electric technologies.Contributing to the facility’s drive for a low carbon footprint, the Dorma Hüppe Variflex moveable wall has an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804, making it a highly sustainable solution.“This is a perfect example of where a moveable wall can add so much more to a room than simply dividing the space,” said Steve Williams, Style’s sales director for the Midlands.“When not in use, the moveable wall can be stacked neatly away creating a large, open plan area. However, when in situ it plays an important role in ensuring ceremonies benefit from maximum privacy, helping to create an environment that is peaceful and free from outside disturbance. To ensure the room is fully accessible, Style increased the height of the pass door in the moveable wall to 2400mm, enabling a coffin to be easily manoeuvred into the chapel.

Project description: 8 skylights - Repair and Re-glaze in Georgian wired obscured glass. The units were in an awful condition as you can see from the pictures, showing extensive rot. All of them were stripped back to bare wood, the putty removed and glazing taken out. We then used a Sadolin Super Dec in white to bring in the parts under the window and replaced the hooked with more tradition lead ones.  Once puttied, we removed the tape as to give it the best possible line before it dried (Timbabglaze is normally paintable after just 1 hour). Once dry we re-masked and used a Dulux UK weathershield system. This was a supergrip primer, oil based Dulux weathershield under coat and finally 2 top coats of Dulux weathershield gloss. The tape was removed and you have the finished product for the first 6 windows. The last 2 windows proved to be a problem. They had been re glazed previously but had been done very badly. The wood was rotten and had to be repaired. After struggling to get the glass out as it had been silliconed in... We used Timbabuild products again. To start with we raked out all the rotten wood back to a hardish part. We then used a Timbabuild 2 part EWS wood primer to give the wood some structure and a base for the next part. Once the EWS had gone off we applied Timbabuild EHB60 epoxy repair. This was left over night (as it was applied last thing in the day) and sanded back to an edge the following day. We then used the Timbabuild ERC10 Rapid curing epoxy adhesive over the top to fill any gaps that needed it. Then a surface layer of 2 part Timbabuild FINISH. They were sanded using a 180 grit paper and received the same paint system as the other 6 windows. The glass was replaced as well as the hooks and the finished results speak for themselves.

We see demand being very strong in the corporate, hospitality, education, healthcare, religious and public sectors.”Skyfold Prisma's glass panels combine with a minimalist frame to allow light penetration into otherwise dark rooms and corridors, creating an open plan feel to any area, positively impacting both mood and productivity. With an impressive 52 Rw dB acoustic rating, Prisma also delivers privacy between divided spaces, allowing confidential meetings, classes, and collaborations to occur simultaneously. Clement steel door screens chosen for famous market street in Soho Conservation Area

Clement Windows Group

Berwick Street is a lively and diverse community in the heart of London's Soho district, built between 1687 and 1703. It runs between Oxford Street to the north and Peter Street to the south and is well known for its thriving market which was established in the 18th century, making it one of the oldest markets in London. 90-104 Berwick Street has recently been transformed from an unattractive 1950s block into a stylish, contemporary, mixed use development. Although unlisted, the building is situated in the Core Central Activities Zone and the Soho Conservation Area, so it was vital that any changes made were in keeping with the surroundings. Clement Windows Group was requested to supply and install the custom- made steel windows and door screens used for the shop fronts on the ground level. A combination of products was specified from both hot rolled and cold formed steel profiles all with polyester powder paint surface coatings. These included Clement W40 steel windows which sit beside and above the doors, the Jansen Economy 50 range of single and double doors and Jansen Economy 60 range of bi fold doors. The Project Manager, Ben Styles said “The Clement W40 steel windows and the Jansen Economy doors provided us with the slender, elegant frames we wanted for this Central London development, giving the shop fronts a contemporary look while remaining true to the urban origins of the site. Clement delivered to our timescales, and we would use them again.”
