Bonhams is a fabulously idiosyncratic 1930s building, situated on prestigious New Bond Street, in West London. The building is Art Deco in style, listed and within a Conservation Area. Architects Lifschutz Davidson & Sandilands led a £30million restoration project and sensitivity was key. The work included replacing the original steel windows on the front elevation facing Woodstock Street and Blenheim Street. Clement W20 steel windows were chosen to match the design of the existing windows. The new windows were fitted with toughened, laminated glass and silicone fronted using dark bronze silicone (to replicate the early putty fronting).

With careful planning, this was overcome and the work flowed continuously for the duration of our time on the schemeA durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance wall solution with a Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme and British Board of Agreement (BBA) certificate was required.The SolutionA sizeable number of mass gravity EcoCrib retaining walls are now built along the M62 J10-12. A total of 44 structures equating to 1546m of walling is now spread across the 3 junctions. With construction speeds exceeding 50m2 a day and a design life in excess of 120 years, EcoCrib is durable, and the most highly sustainable retaining solution. Designed, supplied and installed by PC Construction, certified by the BBA and HAPAS in 2012.EcoCrib profiles are manufactured entirely from recycled UK plastic (bottle tops, car bumpers etc) with any wastage or surplus material re-processed to form new EcoCrib profiles.EcoCrib can be recycled when it reaches the end of its useful life.When considering solutions for developments of all kinds, the lifetime cost means EcoCrib is the more efficient choice.2984 SQM of EcoCrib was used on the scheme, equivalent to 222 tonnes of plastic waste diverted from landfill.

Harleyford Court is a residential building which sits within the London Borough of Lambeth’s Vauxhall Conservation Area. Clement worked closely with Lambeth Planning Authority to agree precise details on the replica replacement steel windows for this red brick building. Clement’s bespoke EB16 steel window range was chosen to replace the existing single glazed fenestration. Despite being fitted with slim 16mm glass units, they benefit from being krypton filled and Part L compliant, offering improved thermal efficiency over that of the original windows.

Extensive use of glass, and the careful articulation of forms, ensure a wonderful feeling of openness, whatever side you view it from. Q-railing’s Easy Glass 3kN glass balustrade system more than fulfilled the demanding safety requirements while still providing maximum transparency. In total, around 600 metres of glass balustrade were installed alongside stairs and landings. Attractive finishing touches were provided by wooden handrails and base shoes powder-coated in black.

In Vlaardingen Museum, the Netherlands, old meets new. The use of concrete, aluminium and glass creates a powerful sense of open space and transparency. The many level changes and loft-like spaces meant it was important to find a balustrade solution unobstructed by a conventional handrail or metal grip. The Easy Glass Pro structural glass balustrade offered the ability to make fine adjustments to the positioning of each glass panel from the installation side – invaluable when being installed on the various sections of finished concrete flooring levels.

The design of the new University of Gibraltar building emphasises transparency and openness while retaining the integrity of the historic structure. Glazed facades and glass balustrades are positioned in striking contrast with original structures such as brick vaults. Fusing a historic fabric with modern design elements presented numerous challenges. It required close cooperation between Q-railing and the architect. In all the glass balustrade systems, they needed to achieve a demanding resistance parameter, in accordance with British Standards. Q-railing provided the Easy Glass Pro structural glass railing and constructed and tested the balustrade, certifying values required by Building Control.

𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗥𝗨𝗧 𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡Beirut explosion 4th August 2020.On August 4th 2020, a major explosion in the port of Beirut estimated as the equivalent of between 1,000 and 1,500 tonnes of TNT was witnessed. The explosion in Beirut was one of the largest man-made non-nuclear explosions ever witnessed and created widespread devastation through a supersonic blast wave radiating throughout the city.Fortunately for some, Abbey Protect 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦® were fitted to a number of windows throughout Beirut. While these were originally fitted as counter terrorism measures, the benefits of having these installed were clear.In one building, the difference in protection between “bomb blast window film” and 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦® where the blast filmed windows had significantly fragmented and caused damage to the interior offices. The offices fitted with 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗦® “it looked as if nothing had happened” (quote from client).𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 are very proud of the performance of our blinds in this significant event, the injuries and deaths that were avoided as a result of their installation are priceless.

630 Sash Windows Restored at Grade II Listed Liverpool LandmarkKEY FEATURES: COMMERCIAL, GRADE II LISTED, SASH WINDOWS, LARGE DEVELOPMENT, RENOVATION, VENTROLLA PERIMETER SEALING SYSTEM (VPSS), VICTORIANThe Grade II* listed Port of Liverpool building was built in the early 1900s and makes up one-third of the “Three Graces” based at Liverpool’s Pier Head, a UNESCO World Heritage site.It was extensively damaged during the Blitz in 1941, and in 2008 we were proud to form part of the major internal and external restoration project, worth £8.5 million, by (then) owner, Liverpool’s biggest commercial landlord company, Downing.The building is home to some of the most prestigious companies in Merseyside, including Rathbones Investment Bank, and is one of the largest projects ever undertaken by Ventrolla.The 630 windows were renovated and upgraded by Ventrolla using the Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS), thus draught-proofing the windows, as well as renovating all the rotten exposed timbers and replacing timbers where necessary. The VPSS system has been independently tested (Class 3 of BS 6375-1) to withstand winds of up to 71mph, something which will come in useful against the harsh sea winds experienced by this building.A spokesperson for Ventrolla, said:“At Ventrolla we are committed to renovating historic buildings in a way that allows them to retain their character and be energy efficient. The Port of Liverpool Building is a striking landmark on the Liverpool riverside and we are delighted to play our part in its regeneration.”Ian Orton, a Director of Downing, said:“Ventrolla’s work is part of a £10 million restoration programme that Downing is undertaking to restore the Port of Liverpool Building to its former glory and enhance its appeal as a contemporary office space.”Now owned by Amtrak Real Estate (who purchased the building in 2015), the Port of Liverpool building remains an iconic part of the docks in Liverpool, the design of which was the result of a competition for local Architects to submit designs for the new building in 1900 and the first prize was £300. The winning design was created by Sir Arnold Thornley and F.B Hobbs in collaboration with Briggs and Wolstenholme.The building has also had more than its fair share of fame, being used as a film set in several productions, including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes & Foyles War (TV series).Ventrolla offers a bespoke renovation service for timber sliding sash and casement windows as well as timber doors. Ventrolla has its central office in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, with additional offices throughout the UK and Ireland.

The 10 apartment buildings of the Cerisier Residences development in Bertrange, Luxembourg are surrounded by green spaces. The balconies with glass railings make for a stunning, modern appearance. Q-railing’s Easy Glass Slim glass balustrade system was identified as the perfect fit. It's extremely cost-efficient, since it is quick and easy to install – an important factor, given that more than 1,600 metres of glass balustrade were required for outside balconies and penthouse roof terraces.

The Brimstone is a luxury boutique hotel. It is located in the beautiful Lake District, and their view of the famous Langdale Pikes would be difficult to beat. In order to provide a clear view of the countryside, the balconies of the rooms and suites were fitted with Q-railing's Easy Glass Slim all-glass balustrades. The railing system's large glass expanses, maximising light and visibility, plus unbeatable quality and safety, made it the obvious choice. A total of 116 metres of glass balcony balustrades were installed in just 2 weeks.

As part of the project all the Alto toilet cubicle doors and partitions at this Mayfair office were wrapped using innovative architectural film in a dark slate grey textured ash veneer finish - provided as part of Washroom's Refresh Service. As well as being environmentally-friendly and quick to install, architectural film is also extremely hardwearing and durable so will further prolong the lifecycle of the toilet cubicles. The sleek dark wood veneer finish is just one of more than one thousand different architectural films available to choose from including wood, metal, marble, leather and stone.

Over 200 linear metres of Q-railing's Easy Glass Slim full glass balustrade feature in this high-tech spectrometry research centre. This is one of the sleekest and most affordable systems in Q-railing’s range of minimalist glass balustrade systems. 175 metres of structural glass railing were installed to the atrium, and a further 25 metres were used on the two staircases leading up to the atrium level. Q-railing was selected for the high quality finish and ease of assembly, which speeds up installation while able to achieve the loadings required.

A dated conservatory area is transformed by Breezefree with a retractable glass roof and polycarbonate curtain walling. Nagan Johnson Architects approached Breezefree to refurbish a dated conservatory area as part of the fit-out of the Cuban restaurant group’s second site in London’s Smithfield district. The brief required a modern retractable glass roof, to replace the old lean-to rooflight, and translucent curtain walling, to replace the dilapidated brick walls and windows...

The A’DAM Tower is a well-known landmark in Amsterdam, the building rises to almost 100 metres and provides views over the whole city. Its renovation involved adding a glass balcony balustrade around the rooftop terrace. Q-railing agreed the use of the Easy Glass Max system with architect OeverZaaijer Architecture (OZ). This high-grade glass balcony railing solution can cope with line loads in excess of 5 kN/m, with modern looks and maximum transparency. OZ were immediately convinced that Easy Glass Max was a perfect fit. In total, 110 metres of railing were installed.

This Edwardian office building in a London west end conservation area has undergone a remarkable transformation, re-emerging as luxury apartments. The project, led by architects De Metz Forbes Knight, redesigned and updated the stone-fronted property on the corner of Great Portland Street and Langham Street, which boasts high windows and fine London. We were appointed to design, supply and install 71 heritage casement windows which would reflect the original styling yet provide modern thermal containment. We created the windows using Slimlite double glazed units with larch frames, and also applied EPDM sealant to further contribute to energy efficiency.

Parc Central shopping centre in Tarragona, Spain, has been one of the leading shopping centres in the Tarragona province. In 2013 the second floor was fully refurbished. For the interior, the architects chose Easy Glass MOD 0760 balustrade and a combination of stainless steel and wooden handrails. On the roof terrace 100 metres Easy Glass Slim were installed, with a stainless steel cap rail to create a stylish finish. The full glass balustrade ensures the safety of people sitting outside while they enjoy a clear view of the surroundings.

The vibrant city of Amsterdam has a stunning new architectural highlight. Discover De Boelelaan, a modern building containing both residential and office space. The feature that really sets it apart is a magnificent rooftop garden. Safety barriers are an essential feature. Q-railing’s Easy Glass Pro glass balustrade system offers maximum transparency with the highest standards of safety. In this case, the balustrade is frameless, with a minimalist U-shaped stainless steel Q-railing profile on top. The 245 metres of glass railing also provide a useful wind break.

The Building Centre, London’s premier architecture and construction gallery, invited Q-railing to re-design its central staircase. It supplied a staircase balustrade with LED lit handrails and a frameless glass balustrade for the void. John Bonning, the Building Centre’s commercial director said: “We applied glass risers to each solid oak tread, which safely created the same floating stair effect as the original but made the stair compliant with modern building regulations. The materials reflected the quality of the Building Centre, whilst drawing natural light into the lower gallery.”

A major part of the project was restoring the building’s original wood windows, which had been covered over with aluminum windows 30 years ago. The aging units—242 in total—had suffered from fogging, failing glass, air leakage, & broken balances that rendered them inoperable. Window manufacturer Re-View, were selected to restore the windows. Re-View restored the windows using restoration epoxies and replicated Accoya wood parts. Re-view chose Accoya due to its durability and 50 year guarantee. As forecasted at the start of construction in 2013, the work will be completed in June 2017.

TRC was appointed as principal contractor by Barker Associates in May 2019, to carry out specialist sash window restoration works.Trinity Primary Academy is a primary school located in Bounds Green Road, Wood Green, London. It was built in 1899 by Mitchell and Butler and consists of yellow brick and red brick dressings, tiled roofs, irregular fenestrations, and sash windows that give away its Queen Anne Revival style. It's currently categorised as a Grade II Listed building with Historic England, and is part of the Academies Enterprise Trust.Nature of the worksAs the building was Grade II listed, timber window repairs had to be sympathetic and complementary to the historic nature of the property. Many of the existing timber sash windows were inoperable due to the build-up of decorative coatings, timber degradation, and defective and broken sash window ironmongery, as well as opening mechanisms. The requirement was for the windows to be fully refurbished, repaired and operational as originally intended, but also modified to meet health and safety requirements.Phase one of the refurbishment of 200 sash and timber casement windows commenced on the area needing most attention: the west elevation of the building. Following the success of phase one, the client team extended TRC’s appointment to continue around the remainder of the building, systematically completing all other windows, door and roof light refurbishments.This overall refurbishment project included:Stripping back the existing paint from the historic sash windows and repairing any decayed timber.Repairing glazing as and where necessary.Improving the thermal and acoustic containment by installing draughtproofing.Repainting windows and installing ironmongery.Undertaking brick and stone repairs to the building’s exterior.This project also required our specialist attention on some specific areas of traditional glazing. This aspect of the project required the repair and refurbishment of all four oriel bay windows and the oriel bay glazed roofs. Completion included the supply and fixing of new safety glazing and hardwood timber roof rafters, along with the repair and refurbishment of the two existing openable roof lights. The supply and fixing of new code 4 lead flashing, with lead wedges, was also carried out and fully pointed with the correct cement mortar at the wall abutment.Additional detailed work throughout the project included the following:Removal of all existing fitted window blinds for refixing upon completion of works.Removal and repair of existing window ironmongery, including original mechanical winding gear, solid bar opening mechanisms, locking fasteners, slide bar restrictors, cable restrictors, handles and stays.Careful removal and repair of all internal fixed-glazed hopper units, casements and pivot openings.Removal and replacement of all cracked and broken glazing, and replacement of the existing Georgian wired-glazing, with 6mm safety glass or 4mm polished plate glass to areas up to 1.2m height from floor level. Where privacy was required, white opaque glass with thickness in accordance with above was used.Removal and replacement of all loose and defective glazing putties, and removal of all flaking, loose and built-up paint coatings.Exposure of all timber rot and decay ready for repair with Repair Care Systems products, followed by sanding and priming ready for decoration.Vertical sliding sashes repaired, refurbished and rehung on new sash cords and weights, and adjusted as needed. Sashes were routed to accept new brush pile weather stripping. New parting beads and staff beads were serviced with brush pile weather stripping where appropriate.Final internal and external decoration was carried out using Dulux or Leyland trade paints, allowing for one undercoat and one gloss finish.

The Sash Window Workshop were contacted to provide a quote to upgrade the timber windows for a customer's property in Hertfordshire.The sales surveyor met with the customer and provided them with a quotation for a mixture of complete new windows and installing new sashes into the existing frames.The customer proceeded in two separate orders, with work initially being carried out in the kitchen and dining room.The windows were made in Accoya wood, which comes with a 50 year anti-rot guarantee, and were double glazed and painted white.After the initial work was complete, the customer was very happy and decided to place an order for the remaining windows and two timber doors to be replaced.

Q-railing was asked by Bond Bryan Architects to provide specifications for a glass balustrade that would surround the escalator void on all 3 floors. The Q-railing architectural team was involved very early in the design process and could therefore provide tailored advice on which type of balustrade and fixing to use. The Easy Glass Slim glass balustrade contributes to the state-of-the-art appearance of the new building. This flagship showroom now is a natural fit with what VW wants to reflect: continuing growth and success.

The Metro Centre is over 22 years old and the building had been experiencing leaks, a problem which was exacerbated by the numerous changes in plant installations on the roof. The original felt waterproofing had reached the end of its working life and a system was required that would keep the building watertight, help comply with current building regulations, and bring the insulation standards up to Part L. A Cold Bonded Built-Up Roofing System was specified for the project consisting of 40mm Decotherm insulation, a Carrier Membrane, and a seamless Decothane Gamma 20 waterproof ‘cap sheet’.

Hall 90 B is Volkswagen’s new centrepiece facility for the development of electromobility. The building brings a new dimension to Volkswagen’s e-campus. Q-railing’s easy to install Easy Glass Slim glass balustrade system provided the architects with an affordable and slender solution that contributes to the open feel of the interior design. Around 800 metres of glass railing, topped with a high-grade stainless steel cap rail, were installed on the building’s galleries and bridges.

St Paul’s Church in Leeds has been transformed with the addition of a large, bespoke steel door screen and feature steel window. The screen incorporates a pair of double doors, providing light and airiness. Both the new steel window and door set are made from Clement EB24 steel sections which include double glazed, argon filled glass units. Mark Harlow, the Vicar, said “St Paul’s Church embarked on a major refurbishment of their 60 year old building to make a warm and welcoming, adaptable space while keeping to the original architect’s ideas. A key part of the brief was to widen the entrance corridor and allow light into one end. This has all been more than achieved using Clement’s metal frame windows and doors. These have helped create an additional space for people to meet and mix. The narrow profile of the frames has allowed maximum light and visual access between the spaces, while the rhythm of the glazing bars both modernise and blend with the architecture of the main worship space.” Architect Tom Robbins of Pearce Bottomley Architects commented: “We have worked with Clement on a number of projects and have been very pleased with the service we have received and the quality of their products. They supplied the steel framed glazed screen and feature window at St Paul’s Church, Ireland Wood, Leeds and we couldn’t have been happier with the result. We also specify Clement’s conservation rooflights whenever we can, as we are of the opinion that they are the best on the market.”

This grand Edwardian property began life as commercial premises, but has recently been given a new lease of life by urban regeneration experts Stockwool Design. The site near the City of London, known as Sterling Mansions, has been transformed into 59 quality apartments for Berkeley Homes. We designed, manufactured and installed 216 traditional timber flush casement windows with feature moldings. Fitted with high acoustic double glazing on the Leman Street elevation, the windows achieved an impressive 45 dB Rw acoustic performance rating (55.4 ACf / 12 / 44.1 Low-E glass).

University Arms Hotel, the oldest hotel in Cambridge, dates from the 1840s when it first opened as a coaching inn. Extensions followed in the 1930s an 1960s; but in 2013 John Simpson Architects began returning cohesion and grandeur to the building. The aim was 190 bedrooms boasting 5-star luxury. We were proud to be awarded the 14-month contract to design, supply and install 300 timber box sash windows, 50 balcony French doors, and 28 curved-on-plan sash windows. We also produced large bespoke entrance screens, and undertook the restoration of leaded light glass.

The main building of the NHL Stenden University in the Netherlands has recently been extended. In addition to a focus on sustainability, the architect wanted to stimulate meetings and bring students and teachers together. In the middle of the central hall you can climb, sit, lie and build with the cube-shaped elements. The long wooden stairs and the walls are partly overgrown with plants and the floor features a beautiful green lawn digitally printed on Flotex Vision.Furthermore, BRTArchitecten has created various meeting places and has given the building it its own landscape. There is an area with a corn field, a tropical rainforest and a delta landscape. These landscapes are all also printed on Flotex Vision and thus form a beautiful focal point in the room. In addition to Flotex Vision,Forbo's Flotex Metro and Marmoleum Real were installed within the University Building.The renovation of the Stenden Hotel Management School was completed in December 2019. A beautiful new campus of 4,500 m2 where Flotex has been chosen thanks to its unique combination of design flexibility, acoustics and ease of cleaning.

With average daily energy bills of only 24p, the cottages at Howgate Close have earned a reputation as possibly the UK’s most energy-efficient homes*. Built by farmer Dr Chris Parsons, the row of nine, single storey cottages exploits a range of passive solar design principles** - including a southerly orientation, a high thermal mass and a earth-bonding (external walls partially covered in soil) - to create homes which are exceptionally energy efficient and comfortable to live in. The homes are also truly affordable as no artificial heat source is required to deliver a stable internal temperature averaging 21-23 degrees Centigrade. The cottages instead use a mix of passive heat sources, created by people and appliances, and solar gain generated through VELFAC triple glazed aluminium / timber windows. As a result, the energy consumption of a two bedroom cottage is 94% less than the average UK household. The architecture of Howgate Close is based on designs created by sustainability housing experts Hockerton Housing Project** ( https://www.hockertonhousingproject.org.uk/) with performance further enhanced by Dr Jerry Harrall (https://drharrall.com) a consultant in the design and adaptation of fossil-fuel-free buildings. ‘Describing Howgate Close as a development of eco-homes is to understate its performance,’ states Dr Harrall. ‘In fact all nine properties operate beyond zero-carbon, and instrumental to the success of Howgate Close is the installation of VELFAC composite triple glazing, specified for its excellent thermal performance.’ A key feature of every cottage is a large, white framed VELFAC composite window screen installed on south facing facades. The screens combine fixed units and a sliding patio door, and with dimensions of up to 3m x 5m occupy almost the entire wall. ‘The VELFAC windows play a crucial role in achieving a SAP rating for each cottage of around 143, potentially the highest group of SAP rating’s in the country and a significant improvement of the average rating of 63,’ says Dr Harrall. ‘VELFAC triple glazing has a U-value of 0.8W/m2K which reduces the rate of heat loss while bringing more natural light into each home, thereby reducing the need for artificial light,’ says Dr Harrall. ‘Across the development, the windows are actually net gatherers of heat, and contribute to an annual energy surplus which we estimate will be enough to power another similar dwelling.’ Unwanted solar gain is minimised by the exceptional insulation afforded by the triple glazed units, enhanced by low emissivity coatings applied to inner glass panes. Skolegade, a street in the Danish city Aarhus, is known for its interesting restaurants, pubs and characterful timber-framed homes. A brand new three storey apartment building was added to the street. The spacious apartments each have access to an ample balcony surrounded by an Easy Glass Slim full glass balustrade. These balustrades allow maximum visibility of the building’s facade, with its striking steel structures. Easy Glass Slim was installed without making any special adjustments to the existing design. The back of the building features Q-railing Juliet balconies.

The architectural team at Henley College, a sixth form college in Oxfordshire, specified EB24 steel windows for the refurbishment of one of its two sites, ‘Rotherfield’. The Victorian Gothic style building had original white steel windows which after 150 years of use were no longer fit for purpose. After researching the market, EB24 was chosen as the right product to replace the existing windows due to its elegant appearance, ability to be made into beautiful patterns to match the existing windows, great security and energy performance.

The Sash Window Workshop were contacted by a couple who were looking to undertake a large project to transform a property in Gloucestershire into an elegant family home.The new wooden windows and doors had to deliver elegance and the traditional look and appearance that the customer wanted from both the inside and outside. They also needed to meet modern window performance standards, with double glazed windows and doors.They arranged to visit the workshop to have a look at how the windows and doors are manufactured and were delighted with the quality, thought and workmanship that goes into all the windows and doors they manufacture. The customer therefore decided to place an order for all the new timber windows and doors.After the work was completed, they commented that they are so pleased and happy with the end result. The customer also noted that the sash windows and doors were instrumental in the transformation of the building into a beautiful family home.

The Sash Window Workshop were contacted to replace the windows and doors in a property in the Cotswolds, as part of a large renovation project of the property.The majority of the existing windows were 2 over 2 sash windows, but these didn’t suit the style of the property home so they wanted to get an idea what other styles of sash windows would look like to restore the property to be more period appropriate.After discussing with the customer, a quote was sent across for replacement 6 over 6 sash windows, new casement windows and new doors.When proceeding with the work, they decided to split the work required across several separate orders between October 2020 and July 2021.As the property was in a conservation area and the windows were not being replaced like-for-like, they obtained planning permission for the new windows. After the order was placed with us, we sent across detailed drawings to accompany their planning permission request.The door and windows were then made to their exact requirements in our workshops in Berkshire. They were manufactured in Accoya, which comes with a 50 year anti-rot guarantee, and were finished in a bespoke semi-gloss paint.After the windows and door were manufactured, they were installed by our skilled fitters. In total, across all the orders, 1 complete new window and 2 complete new French doors were manufactured and installed, along with 24 sets of windows having new sashes manufactured and installed into the existing window frames.Since completing the work, the customer has commented that the product and service was excellent and noted that they would recommend us to others.
