An artist has used MEDITE® TRICOYA® EXTREME (MTX), a weather resistant MDF, to ensure her six original paintings could continue to be enjoyed for up to 50 years at Raigmore Children’s Hospital Garden in Aberdeen.

Products from leading paint brand Johnstone’s Trade have been used to bring a student housing development in Liverpool sparkling back to life in time for the start of the new academic year. Cambridge Court, which is managed by the UK’s leading developer and manager of student accommodation UNITE, sits in the heart of the city and its 265 rooms, communal areas and hallways were in need of a facelift before the new intake of students. Offering excellent value, the Acrylic Durable Matt boasts a unique washable formula allowing walls and ceilings to be regularly cleaned between redecoration programmes.

Over 250 litres of Johnstone’s Professional Gloss combined with 37 used shipping containers have helped to create a unique three-storey complex of fully-equipped office space in the North East. Ideal for use on metal surfaces, Johnstone’s Professional Gloss was used to paint the exterior of the containers to give a durable, high gloss finish. Other products from Johnstone’s extensive range were also used, with Johnstone’s Vinyl Soft Sheen and Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt emulsion, both of which are part of Johnstone’s Ecological Solutions range, applied to the interior walls and ceilings.

The Spine, located in the heart of Knowledge Quarter Liverpool – a central hub for higher education and research in the city – includes the new northern home of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). Designed by renowned architecture and building consultancy practice AHR, the building has been hailed as one of the healthiest workplaces in the world, thanks to the pioneering research in biophilia, health and wellbeing that has been drawn on for its creation. One of the most exciting new developments in the north, The Spine reflects the RCP’s global stance as a leader in healthcare, using the latest innovations in wellbeing-focused design, while being a striking new addition to the Liverpool skyline. The Spine has been designed according to the scientific and medical research principles established in the WELL Standard to achieve WELL Platinum. Through the integration of architecture and interior design The Spine embeds wellness and biophilia into the building environment emphasising strong connections to nature throughout the building, along with the highest standards for provision of fresh air, light and water. The distinctive façade takes influence from the human skin, with the striking Voronoi pattern including 23 million individual polygons applied to the glazing of the building. Inside the building The Spine’s series of double height spaces known as vertical villages supports the provision of light to aid productivity and stimulating the mind. Interior design solutions were selected with occupant wellbeing at the forefront, from natural materials, textures and finishes wherever possible to support biophilic principles and ensure air quality is kept to a high standard throughout the building. Working closely with PPG, AHR specified a range of sustainable paints including JOHNSTONE’S® Trade Air Pure – a bio-based wall and ceiling paint proven to purify indoor air. “When it came to choosing paints for The Spine, we knew we had to find options that were water-based and would have the least possible negative impact on occupants. So we were delighted to find a paint that would actually improve indoor air quality. By using Johnstone’s Trade Air Pure, we’re optimising the air quality within the building and helping to enhance the general wellbeing of occupants, all while limiting the impact on the environment.” Robert Hopkins, AHR regional director Once applied, the revolutionary Air Purifying technology in Johnstone’s Trade Air Pure neutralises up to 70 per cent of formaldehyde from indoor spaces. What’s more, the formula is 45 per cent bio-based and comes in 100 per cent recycled packaging. To complement Air Pure a range of low-VOC water based solutions were used to give the building long term protection including Johnstone’s Trade Aqua Water Based Gloss and Water Based Satin, Covaplus Vinyl Matt, Acrylic Durable Matt and Acrylic Durable Eggshell. The use of biophilic design extends into the colour palette chosen to represent the growth of a tree. Natural earthy colours flow throughout the lower floors, merging into greener, leafier colours and patterns and blues on the upper floors as you travel up the building. The colour palettes work harmoniously with the timber curtain wall and timber floor. The landmark development is not only BREEAM Excellent rated for its sustainable approach; it is also one of the first buildings in the UK designed to the WELL Platinum Building Standard®, certified for mental health and physical wellbeing. “The Spine is one of our most exciting and revolutionary projects to date. Stoneham Park Primary Academy is a brand-new school in Eastleigh which welcomed its first class of five-year-old pupils in September 2020. Crown Trade products are providing the University of East London with a trusted route to transform student accommodation for the new academic year under a comprehensive redecoration programme. Crown Trade Steracryl Mould Inhibiting Matt Paint, Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt and Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss are all being applied as part of the refurbishment of 57 dormitories and associated kitchen areas at the university’s Docklands Campus. Consisting of an individual bedroom and private bathroom, the dormitories - part of the Redbridge Student Accommodation - are in the transition from term time to summer school programmes.

More than 150 litres of Sandtex Trade’s X-Treme X-Posure® Smooth Masonry Paint have been used to repaint the red and white bands of Happisburgh Lighthouse tol provide protection from the elements for up to 20 years. Peter Hairsine, of P H Hairsine & Sons, said: “We use Sandtex X-Treme X-Posure for its durability as it lasts longer in extreme conditions, which is needed for the lighthouse as it is exposed to a lot of salt, as well severe weather. For us, this is also the best product because it dries quickly.”

Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth was the only product on the tee for a makeover project at the home of golf, St Andrews. Dumbreck Decorators applied Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth in a bespoke shade entitled ‘St Andrews Special Collection,’ to all external facades. Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth is a premium smooth masonry paint which provides a quality protective and decorative finish.

Leading paint brand Crown Trade has extended its popular water-based Fastflow Quick Dry range of trim products to offer even greater design flexibility and provide specifiers with a classic low-sheen eggshell finish. Benefitting from Crown’s advanced innovative Breatheasy® technology, the new water-based eggshell option’s low-odour formulation lends itself perfectly for work on projects where disruption needs to be kept to a minimum such as education and healthcare facilities. The product’s quick drying properties can also help reduce time and labour on site, allowing rooms to be reoccupied sooner.

Project details Charles de Gaulle International Airport is the second largest airport in Europe after London Heathrow. It is located just outside Paris and handles over 50 million passengers every year. For this reason it can be difficult to find the time for maintenance and repairs. "The airports floors have to withstand constant heavy traffic from passengers, staff and maintenance workers. It was therefore important that their repair and paint products were quick to apply, cure and hard wearing." The work that needed to be carried out was at the entrance to Terminal 3 which is the main public transport hub for Charles de Gaulle. For this reason the work needed to be carried out and finished between the hours of 9.30pm and 6.30am. After this time heavy traffic would resume. Our solution The first job was to clean the concrete floor slabs with Watco Concroff to remove all surface contaminants including oil and fats. Watco Concroff contains no solvents or other chemicals that are dangerous for the environment and penetrates even the thickest deposits of grease. The floor was then primed with Tack Coat, an epoxy resin adhesive primer which guarantees excellent grip on the key surface. As Charles de Gaulle is subjected to such heavy constant traffic a standard mortar would not be sufficient to withstand this, for this reason they choose Watco Concrex® Carbon Fibre. As it is as strong as granite it could be smoothed to a thickness of only 3mm, making the surface both waterproof and slip resistant. The Concrex® was subsequently painted with Safety Coat. Safety Coat is roller applied and contains fine, traction enhancing particles embedded in an epoxy resin coating so this coating was ideal for providing a non slip surface for added security.

When South Lakes Housing Association refurbished 276 properties in the depth of the Cumbrian winter Sandtex Trade 365 All Weather Masonry Paint helped keep work on schedule. The majority of the work at the Kirkbarrow Estate in Kendal started in November 2014 and finished in late Summer 2015 – with Sandtex Trade 365 being applied throughout winter, spring and summer. The product is specially formulated for use in adverse weather conditions and features high performance Pliolite® Resin to combat difficult weather conditions, allowing work to extend later into the UK’s traditional decorating season.

A supported living home in Norfolk has been refreshed using products from Crown Trade’s extensive range in a bespoke colour scheme devised for the project by Crown’s colour consultants. Crown Trade’s Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt was applied. With a Class 1 rating on the ISO11998 testing method, Clean Extreme is scrub resistant up to 10,000 scrubs, meaning the paint surface won’t start to deteriorate - even with a regular and intensive cleaning regime. It will also resist a variety of common household stains to retain its ‘just decorated’ look for much longer.

Crown Trade has extended its Clean Extreme range to offer specifiers a trio of high performance products to help combat the common problems of dirt, mould and bacteria. The water-based range offers three quick drying and low odour solutions to creating clean and hygienic surfaces- Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt, Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt and Clean Extreme Mould Inhibiting Scrubbable Matt. The full Clean Extreme range is also available in a high performance, stain-resistant, durable and washable Acrylic Eggshell mid sheen finish.

St Peter’s is a Grade II* listed church in Notting Hill, West London. It was built to designs by Thomas Allom and is reputed to be the last Classical Revival church built in London in the 19th century. Building began in 1855 and the church was consecrated in 1857. Its large scale portico and west tower are the notable features. A complete restoration and refurbishment has been carried out, including the re-instatement of its redundant gallery, new meeting rooms and exterior colour-washed facades.The architect wanted to achieve a look that replicates limewash, with some very subtle variation almost replicating a layering colour of bath stone. The final specification was a layered solution to achieve the desired finish. This included a coat of KEIM Soldalit Fixativ to the newly applied lime skim, and KEIM Soldalit Grob applied to all areas. The surface was then painted using KEIM Soldalit, before lastly KEIM Restauro Lasur being applied as the top two coats.

Riversfield is a large detached Grade B listed town house. This property had severe contamination of moss and algae. We recommended that the climbing plants and wall shrubs to be moved away from the surfaces prior to the decoration of KEIM. We then advised that any existing fungal growth must be thoroughly removed using wire brushes to remove all growths and then all areas were to be treated with KEIM Algicid. Onto the cement based, roughcast surfaces, a three coat KEIM Royalan system was used to provide a colourfast, longlife, breathable, protective and decorative mineral matt finish.

KEIM NHL KalkPutz is new to the UK, with Montalto House being the first specified and completed project, but has been used for many years by KEIM in Germany and other worldwide KEIM subsidiaries. It is a multipurpose Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL) render suitable for both manual and machine application, and for interior, exterior and damp areas. KEIM NHL Kalkputz can be used as a complete lime render system and also for patch repair of existing NHL rendered facades, over large or in localised areas.

This Grade II listed farmhouse in Monmouthshire has recently been redecorated using the KEIM Granital system. The 16th – 18th century limewashed lime rendered property needed a freshen up. The limewash was delaminating and powdery, lower sections on the northern elevation were damp with black mould, green growth moss and algae were prevalent on all elevations, as well as hairline cracks within the render.   It was specified that all elevations should be cleaned free of excessive mould and green-growth and powdery residue from the limewash. KEIM Algicid-Plus to be applied and left to dry on the surface before coating. The lower exposed render on the front elevation was suffering from splash back off the paving stone, it was recommended that an application of KEIM Silan Primer was applied on the first 0.5m of this elevation, to allow improved water repellence. The KEIM Granital system was then used to obliterate hairline cracks and provide a breathable coating.

To comply with passive fire protection requirements, Nullifire worked with trusted contactor Protek Interiors to install both SC602 Intumescent Base Coat (On-Site) and SC802 Water Based Intumescent Base Coat (On-Site) to this 2500m2 project. The combination of these projects worked well given the challenging circumstances and allowed for Protek Interiors to fully adhere to the fire strategy of the building.

Following the building expansion of more than 47,000 m2 the grade-II listed Stanford Hall Estate facility required further fire protection measures to be installed in order to reset its resistance to fire. Nullifire were on hand to recommend the use of FB750 Coated Batts, FS702 Water-Based Intumescent Acrylic Sealant, and FS709 Intumescent Sealant. The combination of these products ensures the fire safety of the building.

Albion Riverside is a high-end residential and commercial development located on the southwest bank of the River Thames. It is between two listed and historic bridges – Albert Bridge and Battersea Bridge and not too far from Westminster. It has been built to create a dynamic quarter in Battersea, London, on the upper floors there are apartments and on lower levels are shops, art galleries and an indoor pool. KEIM Concretal Lasur was applied in 2003 to the V Beams and the swimming pool soffits to improve the concrete appearance whilst still maintaining a natural concrete effect.

Headland House in Dale, Haverfordwest is a detached barn conversion. We advised to remove all existing coatings using the DOFF & TORK system. The smooth render had evidence of red algae on some of the surfaces, we therefore recommended for these areas to be treated using a bleach solution prior to decoration of KEIM. A three-coat application of the KEIM Royalan system was applied due to the coastal location of this property, to give a long lasting, high performance coating.

Asta House, part of the 80 Charlotte Street development, comprises 22 apartments which have been designed with rich detail and luxurious materials throughout. The wide-windowed brick and slate building was decorated with KEIM Royalan to give a stylish, sleek finish.  

This 12 year old, sea-facing property suffered from pink algae growth affecting the textured through-colour render and copings stones. There was a leak to the external staircase and the balcony downspout, which caused staining and what appeared to be salt efflorescence; this area required attention prior to decoration. KEIM Royalan was specified on the sea-facing elevation to protection the property from harsh weather conditions and give a long lasting, colour-fast and decorative matt finish. KEIM Lotexan was applied onto the coping stones to help shed water and reduce algae growth.

Today, visual learning has been recognized as the easiest way the human mind can perceive information. The more technology is developing, the more people get drawn towards the screens. While tech devices have a definite advantage in providing a highly interactive way of introducing ideas, there are also some drawbacks that most people are very familiar with. Sometimes it’s just best to use a whiteboard wall instead. When we think of a classroom we usually imagine a narrow space with a teacher podium and a wall-hung writing board. The whole attention is drawn to the front centre of the room towards a confined writing space. The teacher-student conversation is a one-sided one where students often feel pressure and inability to respond when asked to step in front of the whole class. Who likes being tested before the judging eyes of a whole room of people, anyway? Teachers understood this problem and decided to take action. Driven by the idea to bring learning closer to students, teachers from the 125th Middle School in Sofia, Bulgaria have reimagined the typical classroom with the help of a product that ESCREO has developed especially with children in mind. The school added a clear dry-erase writing space to one of the side walls of a classroom. What happened after that turned their whole teaching system upside down.

This student residence hosts the capicity to house students as well as offering 380m2 of office space. In order to comply with passive fire protection requirements Nullifire recommended the use of FB750 fireproof panels, FS702 flame retardant acrylic sealant, On-Site Water-Based Intumescent Basecoat SC801, and On-Site, Water-Based Intumescent Basecoat SC802. The combination of these products provided all of the necessary safety measures for occupants in case of a fire.

Imperial Court, located in Central London is a landmark Grade II listed building. Having originally served as the headquarters of England’s Army, Navy and Air Force, the remarkable building has since been remodeled into residential accommodation, offering 64 homes in a heritage setting. When the exterior of the property needed a refurbishment, chartered surveyors Shaw & Co turned to PPG to provide a bespoke specification that was focused on providing long-term durability and protection, whilst also keeping up with the aesthetics of the heritage settings.

Alexander Stadium, a 41-acre athletics venue located in Birmingham and home to the 22nd Commonwealth Games was redeveloped to create a world-class venue for diverse sporting, leisure, community, and cultural events.PPG Johnstone's Trade coatings were used to update the internal and external exposed steel structures and the stadium’s different walking and circulation areas including the concourse areas.
