When Westminster Cathedral’s roof was first asphalted back in 1903, it would have utilised naturally occurring asphalt deposits dug up from an overseas lake. These days, things are done a little differently. Instead, IKO’s Permaphalt – a polymer modified mastic asphalt – was specified for the extensive reroofing of the Cathedral by Architect, Michael Drury from St Ann’s Gate Architects. “Asphalt had worked well for the Cathedral in the past and there was no reason why it shouldn’t again,” he said, adding the new roofing’s 25 year guarantee clinched the decision for a like-for-like replacement.

Manchester’s iconic Midland Hotel sits in the heart of the city centre and has been a well-loved retreat for visitors since opening its doors in 1903. Following decades of service to the city, the hotel had started to show signs of its age, with multiple areas of water ingress across the site that needed to be addressed, to preserve the building for years to come. It was essential for the hotel to remain fully operational during the roofing refurbishment, with minimal disruption to its customers.The original single-ply system had failed across the courtyard and atrium roofs, leading to the insulation becoming fully saturated with water. The metal deck’s structural integrity had also been compromised and a structural engineer was appointed to review the extent of the damage, to confirm the area as condemned and in need of immediate replacement.A bespoke Garland UK specification was designed to upgrade the insulation and U-Value of the hotel to comply with current regulations, remove ponding water on the roof systems with a new tapered insulation design and provide peace of mind to the building owners with a 25-year Garland Single-Point Guarantee.

The National Institute for Medical Research was originally designed in 1934 by Maxwell Ayrton, with the buildings all being named after pioneering researchers from the institute (Dodson & Wolff House), with the main cruciform named as Ayrton House. This building has been recreated with a green copper-roofed centre, village pond, 3 storey workspace and restaurant.Cellecta’s HEXATHERM XPERi was specified by Julian de Metz of dMFK working with Hawkins\Brown & RMA Architects due to its closed cell structure that provides unrivalled resistance to water absorption and high compressive strength, making them ideal for external basement lining applications.Barratt Homes was supplied 112,500m² of Cellecta products to develop these flats in the Mill Hill conservation area.

The majority of the work at the Kirkbarrow Estate in Kendal started in November 2014 and finished in late Summer 2015 – with Sandtex Trade 365 being applied throughout winter, spring and summer. Moreover, this modern-looking profile compliments the glass façade of the building giving it a truly stylish finish, without compromising on safety. 

Located in the heart of tourist London, St James’s Park Café occupies a prime spot overlooking Duck Island and St James’s Lake. The curved wooden building features a sweeping 200-seat roof terrace and floor to ceiling glass windows where diners can while away an hour or two admiring the infamous pelicans and black swans of St James’s Park. With 5 million visitors to the park each year, café operators, Benugo, have quite a challenge maintaining service and facilities. Four K&K pumps distributed over more than 50 m of water feature around the Universe Lake provide fun in summer, where hardly anyone – in the truest sense of the word – stays dry. More water play is not possible! Right in the middle of this ingenious playground is our facility, where up to one hundred children can play at the same time. Embedded in a huge area of special fall protection gravel, this is the dream for all water play fans.

Along with re-surfacing, inspection, showed signs of wear and tear on the bridge surface areas too. Consulting Engineers, Jacobs, approached IKO for the specification, and Galliford Try won the tender. BriggsAmasco were chosen as the installing contractor. IKO’s Permatrack Bridge Surfacing system was chosen - a waterproof mastic asphalt wearing course for Bridge Decks containing both polymer and epure (Trinidad Lake Asphalt) modifications to the bitumen binder, which offers improved material flexibility and maintains good rut resistance. Existing mastic asphalt surfacing and bridge deck waterproofing was stripped off and replaced with Stirling Lloyd’s eliminator waterproofing system and Permatrack.

The National Trust visitor centre at Tarn Hows in the Lake District is set in a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). EPDM was specified for the roof because of its environmentally friendly credentials which have the backing of Greenpeace. Hertalan roofing products were chosen because of ISO9001/14001 and BBA certification. The membranes were a combination of factory vulcanised sheets and easy weld rolls which were installed in accordance with strict FLL/GRO guidelines. The specification for the green roof insisted on local species of sedum and had over 2000 plug plants installed into 150mm deep recycled growing substrate.

The G8 Summit in Enniskillen of the world’s most powerful politicians involved 4,700 Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers and 3,600 from other UK forces in a security operation that cost about £60m.The PSNI wanted the securest G8 ever at a time of ‘severe terrorist threat’ and hoped that its reputation for dealing with public disorder plus unprecedented physical, cyber, technical and logistical protection would keep many potential protesters away.The SolutionPSNI approached Zaun to design, manufacture, project manage and install an ‘impregnable cordon’ around the world leaders to guarantee their security throughout the summit at Lough Erne.The rectangular site was protected on its long northeastern boundary by the Lough Erne lake. After extensive testing, Zaun designed its single largest ever temporary installation using two of its premier high-security fencing systems for the other three sides.It installed its 3.6m high SecureGuard PAS68 temporary security fencing along the 5.7km road to the southwest of the site, which runs broadly parallel with the lough. In addition, Zaun integrated rising arm barriers and 10 PAS68 gates for secure access control along the fence line.It also put in 1.7km of its award-winning Rapid Deployable System (RDS) at each end, creating a secure perimeter from the road to the edge of and into the lake.RDSZaun had to make several adaptations to its multi-award-winning RDS that was first used for four political conferences on the mainland in 2012 and bought by The Home Office to add to the National Barrier Asset.In addition to the cable system on the front of the fence line gives the system it's PAS68 rating of 30mph (PAS 68:2010 V/7500(N2)/48/90:11.6/0.0), Zaun incorporated further enhancements to prevent mob attack on the run-up to the summit. Both RDS and SecureGuard were extensively tested by PSNI and the Home Office against mob attacks. These tests will now form the basis of a new standard adopted by the Home Office when testing systems.Zaun also created specially designed posts to carry additional one-tonne weights to prevent movement on the 30-metre section of RDS fencing that actually tracked into the lake itself to discourage protesters from breaching the perimeter via the water.RDS was used on remoter areas around the edge of forest land, dirt tracks and grassy knolls with undulating ground, and boggy land at the airport to provide Airforce One and other presidential jet landings.

A range of products from Crown Paints’ portfolio of professional brands have been used to transform Cardiff’s iconic Roath Park Clock Tower, which dates back to 1915. Members of Crown’s specification team collaborated closely with Cardiff City Council and professional painting contractor JJ Williams (Painting Services) Ltd, to devise a cost-effective and high-performance paint specification for the redecoration of the famous clock tower. Originally created as monument to Captain Robert Scott and his companions who set sail from Cardiff on their ill-fated voyage to Antarctica in 1910, the clock tower has become a popular and recognisable part of the city’s heritage and stands proudly in the middle of Roath Park Lake.

The award-winning Skelton Lakes motorway services near Leeds is using bespoke manufactured architectural linings from the Pendock Linea range. GRG pilasters were specified to provide a consistent finish between shop fronts, whilst integrating with the dry lined walls above. They also include a 30mm radius on each corner to ensure there are no sharp edges and a stainless-steel kick plate at the base.GRP bulkheads are used to conceal the steel floor beams at first-floor level, which were manufactured to follow the gentle curve incorporated in the design of the shop fronts. By using GRP it allows a small amount of flex to ease installation and ensures the minimum additional mass is added to the structure.

TRC Windows have recently undertaken a project at Cadogan Terrace in East London (E9) to install 160 new casement windows across several buildings in this iconic, well-loved location.The projectNestled near Hackney Wick overground station and the Regent’s Canal, Cadogan Terrace is an attractive Victorian terrace with stunning views of the beautiful green spaces and delightful boating lakes of Victoria Park.The houses on Cadogan Terrace are full of quintessential British charm and we were proud to be asked to work on this refurbishment project to lovingly give these buildings a new lease of life.To deliver the project, which will span the course of eighteen weeks, TRC are partnering with AD Construction Group Limited, one of the UK’s leading privately owned public sector specialist providers of refurbishment services.

Capstone Farm Country Park covers 114 hectares of former farmland set on the North Downs. There is a variety of habitats within the park, including ancient woodlands, old orchards, a freshwater lake, meadows and hedgerows.DCM worked on the project with HAGS, installing Rubber Mulch to the playground. Natural colours were chosen for the playground, blending in with the surrounding scenery and play equipment. Leaf graphics were created using both Rubber Mulch and Wetpour, bringing life and depth to the park.The Head of Regeneration at Medway Council commented:“Capstone Farm Country Park is one of Medway’s seven Green Flag parks. Thousands of people visit the park each year and we are delighted to have installed new play equipment and surfacing graphics for children to enjoy. A beautiful timber frame house, made of Western Red Cedar based in Kings Langley. Kings Langley, Hertfordshire is the birthplace of Ovaltine, the soothing malt drink. The village is divided by the River Gade and endowed with a couple of beautiful lakes.It is here, at one of these lakes, that a charming timber garden house is fitted with beautiful wooden louvres. By Sunshield, in collaboration with Contrasol. We were delighted to assist the owners with custom made external louvres to provide the a much needed perfect solution to reduce glare. Our client is sensitive to light and needed an effective shading product to specifically reduce sunlight entering the internal space.Our client was looking for something to be able to control light as well as a solution to fully block out light at night. The windows are South facing; therefore the louvres were also perfect for shading purposes and heat reduction.The Sunshield team applied the popular 98W which is made from Western Red Cedar to compliment the overall building.

When Brexit terms were finally decided in 2020, the end to the freedom and movement of EU goods was agreed to begin from the 1st January 2021. HMRC therefore required an Inland Border Facility to be urgently mobilised to perform the new series of checks required on HGVs crossing the UK Border at the Port of Dover and the Channel Tunnel. This site acts as a location for checking movements of goods inbound (Defra and HMRC) and outbound (HMRC only).Each location is to include parking areas for HGVs and other vehicles, with security measures and facilities to enable the checking of vehicles and goods entering and exiting the sites. There are also temporary office buildings, staff and driver welfare amenities.The design of the facility onto 48ha of former agricultural land was developed with a view to maintaining the landscape and biodiversity of the surrounding area and to screen views of the site from the local villages.Excavated materials were sustainably reused as part of this process in order to create bunds, whilst surface water drainage of the site is directed to local wildlife ponds and wetlands via 30,000 square metres of aggregate filled Truckcell cellular paving.The site is trafficked by up to 950 HGVs at any one time and provides a free-draining, sustainable and durable SuDS surface to withstand the traffic levels without damage or abrasion.Throughout the project, ABG’s in house technical team provided design guidance and site installation support for the customer. Truckcell is a heavy duty cellular paving system manufactured from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic, capable of sustaining frequent HGV loads up to GVW 60 and 10 tonne wheels loads. It can be filled with angular gravel (as was the case on this project) or topsoil and grass seeded, according to the application.

The Gatehouse in Whaddon, Milton Keynes required a complete roof renewal with a new roof lantern installation. Over the years, the roofs had undergone several failed repairs, therefore, the client required a robust, cold applied, cost effective solution. Proteus Waterproofing specified Proteus Pro-Cold® as it's a single pack, fully reinforced polyurethane system that is cold applied, seamless and elastomeric, providing up to 20 years further life to the structures it is applied to.High Performance WaterproofingThe existing roof was a EPDM roof that had to be completely stripped. The deck was replaced and a complete warm roof build up, including Proteus Pro- Therm PIR insulation boards, was installed and finished with Proteus Pro-Cold®. As ponding was an issue on this roof, a new gutter was created to solve this problem. The client was incredibly pleased with the finish, so much so, that their neighbours have requested our Proteus Approved Contractor to carries out their roofing works. Health & SafetyAs the building is an occupied residential building, keeping the residents safe was paramount. As Proteus Pro-Cold® is cold applied, it met all the health and safety criteria, as well as keeping disruptions to a minimum.Long Term PerformanceProteus Pro-Cold® offers a low maintenance, durable waterproofing and protection solution for a range of new build and refurbishment applications. As part of Soundis’ ongoing work supplying high-quality acoustic flooring at various Premier Inn’s around the UK, we were brought on to provide acoustic flooring to their Penrith site, one of Premier Inn’s many new sites across the UK.Due to it’s service and close proximity to the Lake District, this hotel has become extremely popular in just a short period of time.Just like a number of our other Premier Inn projects, we supplied an acoustic flooring system to the 1st and 2nd floors. This superb system provides excellent levels of soundproofing while being used in a shallow floor build up.We also supplied XPS Insulation on the ground floor with a 22mm T&G chipboard overlay, maximising durability for the increased footfall.The system we supplied reduced the overall noise within the hotel, allowing Premier Inn to fulfill it’s promise of a good night’s sleep. This installation carried out by UK Acoustic Systems proved to be a great success, reducing the noise levels within the building and helped ensure the most comfortable stay possible for guests.

WILDLIFE KERB SOLUTION FOR PERTH AND KINROSS COUNCILWhen local wildlife rangers reported significant numbers of amphibians trapped in roadside gullypots, Perth and Kinross Council were concerned that many of these animals would be unlikely to escape or survive. In order to provide a safe and sustainable solution to prevent this issue, the council turned to ACO’s Wildlife Kerb to eradicate the problem.  Following prior observations during routine drain maintenance, Perth and Kinross Council Countryside Ranger Service set out to conduct the Amphibians in Drains Project throughout the region. The surveys revealed that significant numbers of trapped amphibian wildlife – primarily frogs and toads – were being found, having fallen through the drain grid. In fact, nearly 70 percent of the gullypots surveyed contained amphibians and small animals. Crucially, once trapped, it is unlikely they are able to escape or survive. Furthermore, the majority of animals were found in August and September, and the road gullies they had fallen down were less than 500m from a breeding pond – which suggests they were dispersing to their hibernation sites. This gave rangers enough information to infer that roadside drains have a significant impact on their populations. Amphibians typically follow the side of the kerb along the road which directs them straight into a traditional gullypot. Following funding from the SITA Trust, the Ranger Service was able to obtain ACO Wildlife Kerbs, which provided the perfect resolution. As part of their eco-friendly design, ACO Wildlife Kerbs contain a recess which allows amphibians  to follow the lower edge of the kerb and bypass  the gullypot.  The council piloted the use of Wildlife Kerbs at a site on Elm Drive in Blairgowrie. The Spa at South Lodge, in the heart of the West Sussex countryside, is the picture-perfect, luxury destination for those seeking ultimate relaxation in complete comfort, far away from the pressures and strains of modern life. Designed by Hove-based architectural firm, Felce and Guy, this prestigious 44,000 sq. ft building sits harmoniously in its beautiful, natural setting with external facing bricks from Vandersanden selected to provide regular form, nuanced colours and natural texture for the project. Located in Lower Beeding, near Horsham, The Spa at South Lodge is a purpose-built spa within the grounds of an award winning 5-star hotel. It features a state-of-the-art gym and spin studio, indoor pool, outdoor hydrotherapy pool and wild swimming pool, a thermal suite and treatment rooms for members, hotel residents and spa day guests. In addition, The Spa at South Lodge includes the Ridgeview Beauty Bar and Botanica, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. Felce and Guy were commissioned to provide a full architectural design, then appointed as lead consultant and contract administrator to oversee the build carried out by main contractor, Beard Construction. The firm’s design balances the specific needs of the hotel and The Spa at South Lodge’s facilities with a sensitivity to the context of the countryside setting and close proximity to the main hotel. The resultant architecture sympathetically responds to these surroundings with the building deep-set into the landscape, minimising its scale, yet taking full advantage of the extensive views available to guests over the South Downs. As the landscape falls away, leading to natural water forms, so too does the new building with external terracing leading out to a vitality pool and down to an external swim pond. After reviewing and testing different samples in advance, Felce and Guy selected Vandersanden’s Lithium brick in a 50mm size for the project. This attractive, hand-formed facing brick comprises a sanded-coated and grained structure in a muted base grey colour with accompanying shades of buff and black to match the stonework colours of the main building at South Lodge Hotel. Over 100,000 bricks were sourced and supplied for the project by specialist brick distributor, N R Taylor of Lingfield, with the thinness of the brick helping to further reduce the visual scale of the Spa building. The horizontal lines of the brickwork act as a softening counterpoint to the vertical natural green oak cladding and large glass panelling that also feature as key elements in The Spa at South Lodge design. Elsewhere, the Lithium brick has been used in the copings, landscaping and dividing walls which create external contours and help to separate the terraces outside of the building. “The Vandersanden brick works with the other materials in the design to present a very organic aesthetic for The Spa at South Lodge,” says John Chapman of Felce and Guy. “It perfectly complements both the dark sandstone used in the original hotel and its mix of greys and brown as well as the natural surroundings. The straight, clean-lines and regular shape of the Vandersanden brick, together with the raked joint we’ve used, has helped emphasise the horizontality of the building and works especially well with the textured finish of the timber panels. As a practice, we set very high expectations which the Vandersanden bricks have undoubtedly satisfied.” In addition to a curving, meadow-grass roof, which helps to attenuate rainwater flow, the Spa at South Lodge benefits from other sustainable technologies and finishes. A biomass boiler system has been installed, and all drainage is contained on site, using reed bed technology. The existing ponds within the hotel grounds have been modified and extended to benefit the local ecology. Vandersanden itself is building a sustainable future for its business, having already invested in renewable solar and wind energy technologies at its major European production plants and committed to a pathway which will see the manufacture of CO2-neutral bricks by 2050. A cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable facing brick was required to complete the scheme.The exclusive housing development has been ‘highly commended’ in the sustainability category at the Placemaking Awards which celebrates projects, plans, people and organisations that are making places better.The unique project, described as one of the most unique and visionary civil engineering projects ever attempted in the UK, has transformed the 42-acre redundant quarry into a modern housing development with a lake, which was formed using water that had been pumped out of the site.According to Alan Patterson Design the project demonstrates its environmental credentials through its ‘engineering initiative and excellence’ in the re-use of the redundant basalt quarry to meet present day housing needs.AG’s facing brick Woodward in Ashbrooke Smooth was chosen due to its hard-wearing capabilities and long-lasting colour retention. The smooth finish of the brick gives a modern appearance to the houses.Additionally, Homepave Cobble Paving was selected for the walkways and garden of the new development. Due to its rumbled surface, it provides a charming additional to the scheme

Tucked away in a marvellous natural landscape, the Parc Hotel Du Lac that looks out onto Lake Levico, offers guests a breath-taking view and a tremendous breadth of services.The structure is an intimate and welcoming oasis, created using a variety of different wood look porcelain tiles and stone look porcelain tiles by Atlas Concorde. The naturalness of the surfaces chosen for floors and walls merges with the clean harmony of the surrounding environment, for a unique effect of immense visual impact. The large restaurant area and the veranda are covered with Axi, wood look porcelain tiles with age-old effect, with an intense and natural character as well as excellent planning potential. The warm and bright Golden Oak colour, rich in veining, bestows the space a touch of refined, extremely natural luxury. Atlas Concorde collections have been used for the bathroom floors and the bathroom walls: for instance, the View collection, which creates a vibrant and engulfing atmosphere combining functionality and design. Some corridors and a lounge area are characterised by a dynamic multi-size installation created using the Copper colour of Trust, stone look porcelain tiles recalling natural quartzite and Luserna stone. A perfect synthesis of aesthetics and technology, the collection also finds perfect application in the outdoor floors of the hotel structure.

Loxford Lodge, Homeleigh and Borough Farm are residential properties within the National Trust estate of Arlington Court, Devon. The grounds cover over 20 miles of footpaths, offering walks such as the Lake walk and Deer Park walk.The National Trust contacted KEIM as they needed a reliable vapour permeable paint, which is more resilient than limewash, to decorate the previously limewashed substrates. The National Trust have previously worked with KEIM on many projects, so they were aware of the benefits that KEIM Paints has to offer.During the site inspection carried out by Julian Cullum of KEIM Mineral Paints, there was evidence of green mould and algae growth on the render.It was recommended to wash down the surfaces by pressure washing and using a stiff brush to remove all mould and fungal growth. KEIM Algicid-Plus was applied and allowed to dry for 24 hours before the decoration could commence.KEIM Fixativ was specified to consolidate the limewash render, followed by a coat of KEIM Soldalit Grob to give an even finish and fill hairline cracks within the render. KEIM Soldalit-ME, in colour 9037, was applied as it has a high resistance against mould and algae, which may build up from the tree canopies surrounding the properties.Following the completion of this project, The National Trust have several more projects they would like us to get involved in.

Gripsure decking has been used to provide safe outdoor areas at a learning centre and holiday lodges owned by a Cornish sailing charity. The Children’s Sailing Trust has taught more than 5,000 youngsters to sail since it was established in on the Helford River in 1997. The charity offers accessible sailing to children who might not otherwise get the opportunity to get out on the water, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.Gripsure’s non-slip decking has been used to create safe outdoor spaces at the trust’s recently opened public waterside Learning Centre at Trevassack Lake on The Lizard, as well as outside six holiday properties at the same site. The three accessible lodges and three cabins, all with inset hot tubs, are available for people to rent and help to raise important funds for the charity.Charity staff say the decking areas had to be non-slip and accessible, as well as in keeping with the style of the site. Up to 3,850 linear meters of Gripsure’s Contemporary profile boards have been used around two sides of public waterside at the Learning Centre, including the outside eating area.The Contemporary boards also form the large decking area outside each of the holiday properties. The lakeside has three architect designed lodges, two of which are fully accessible with integrated ceiling hoists, adjustable kitchen facilities, wide doorways and other aids.There are also three double-depth cabins, more suitable for non-disabled guests or those with some mobility limitations.Katie Chown, marketing manager at Children’s Sailing Trust said: “The non-slip surface is very important because we have children running around and people with mobility difficulties who need to have safe, level walkways. We chose the Contemporary profile because we are a brand new site with purpose-built, modern facilities to welcome all ages and abilities, so all the finishings and furnishings are classic, modern and good quality.”Gripsure’s low maintenance Contemporary profile boards are made from high-quality Northern European Redwood Pine. They have an expected service life of 15-20 years and a 15-year non-slip performance warranty.Katie said: “It does the intended job and looks smart,” adding that it is “very practical in day-to-day use.”The decking areas at Trevassack Lake were fitted through contractor Brady Construction. Alastair Knight from Brady said although tough to cut, the boards blended in with the look of the centre and holiday properties. “It all looked really good in the end,” he said. “Apart from blunting a few cutting tools, everything else was brilliant. The decking fitted in very well.”The Children’s Sailing Trust was established for local school children. Ten Traffic Street is a 522-bed student accommodation serving luxury living located on a prominent site within Nottingham City Centre. The project was delivered by Jensco and offers excellent amenities such as a cinema, games room, study spaces, onsite coffee shop, indoor and outdoor Gyms and multiple outdoor communal spaces including a roof terrace. Artform Urban worked closely with the Landscape architects, Ares Landscape to provide a substantial package of premium external furniture to ensure the high-end finish extends to the outdoor spaces. The complex is spread across 2 buildings with courtyards and one roof terrace overlooking the city. In total, there are 4 external spaces - each has its own identifiable aesthetic which is driven by the building fascias and window frame colouring which is then reflected in the outdoor furniture.The roof terrace is surrounded by a large Inspira Modular Planting System installation powder-coated in a unique Khaki Grey - bringing colour and natural benefits to the space. The planters house plants and small trees that provide dappled shade to ensure residents can enjoy the terrace on hotter days. Tables, benches, and a Box Litter Bin all in a coordinated colour palette, provide social seating and dining spaces and vibrant plastic Chill Lounger’s and Hop Op 500’s offer a more casual seating option for residents.The ground floor courtyards feature a continuation of benches and Box litter bins - with all steelwork powder coated in a specific colour for each space. An external gym has been provided in the larger courtyard and features two Endurance Wellness Stone installations. These unique sculptural pebbles include stainless steel fixtures to accommodate a variety of exercises. This is the first installation in the UK of these products that are part of a wider range of premium external gym equipment named MyEquilibria. This unique fitness range aims to redefine the workout experience by combining art, high-end design and community. As final additions to the spaces Artform Urban provided an extensive bike parking package as well as Fuente Drinking Fountain’s to encourage students to cycle and reduce plastic waste. 

RESIN BOUND FOR RBG KEW WALKWAYAddagrip Terraco are delighted to have been involved in the Broad Walk project at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew with the installation of over 3000sqm of our innovative resin bound porous paving system, Terrabase Rustic.SURFACING REQUIREMENTSAddagrip Terraco were approached as the UK ‘s leading manufacturer of resin exterior surfaces and together with approved contractor, True Grip Ltd, carried out extensive surveys and put together several specification options and costs that Kew could consider. Kew selected Addagrip’s new patented resin bound surfacing system Terrabase Rustic as it offered a larger 6-10mm stone size providing the rustic looking finish that Kew required and could be installed over the existing macadam with minimum environmental impact and disruption. Drainage was another key requirement and the larger stone size of this bound system provides maximum porosity.As the Terrabase product was relatively new, the surface had to meet many exacting performance criteria put forward by Kew which Addagrip was able to substantiate. After 9 months of discussion, True Grip Ltd were appointed to work via main contractor Kier Facilities Services to install the Terrabase Rustic Oak finish. Despite challenging weather conditions and site restrictions due to the public use of the main areas, True Grip Ltd installed 3,163m2 over the entire Broad Walk, following behind Kier Facilities Services who were installing extensive drainage services and brick edging.The new Terrabase Rustic surface is hard wearing, low maintenance with no loose stone and provides a seamless, natural rustic pathway which looks very much at home in the grounds of London’s historic Royal Botanic Gardens.This exciting project has created the longest double herbaceous borders in the UK. The 300m long borders either side of the Broad Walk from the Orangery to the Palm House Pond, were planted with swathes of vibrant summer flowering perennials, grasses and bulbs to form a spectacular new horticultural feature. Artform Urban Furniture was appointed by Seddon Construction to provide external furniture to a state-of-the-art new Veterinary School in Staffordshire. The Harper & Keele Veterinary School is a joint venture with Harper Adams University and is located on Keele University’s campus. The building is a modern take on the traditional surrounding redbrick architecture. Located in North Staffordshire, the rural campus location consists of extensive woods and lakes, an ideal location for the country’s future vets.To complement the building's distinctive raw umber colour the client opted for a range of corten street furniture. Corten Steel is sandblasted before proceeding with the oxidation process, designed to limit water consumption and achieve a more consistent finish. Pre-Weathering reduces the level of washout onto surrounding surfaces, units can be fully sealed with anti washout or wax protection treatment to eliminate leakage altogether.The street furniture package was to be positioned around the building's entrances and main thoroughfares. The selection of pre-weathered Corten Steel products includes Spencer T Litter Bins which have a modern tapered design, Cube bollards that can also be used as seating, and Vision Bollards that have an in-built LED light that provides a subtle ambient light for the walkways and entrance. Removable Stainless Steel Bollards were also supplied to provide restricted access for authorised vehicles to particular areas of the campus. The Harper & Keele Veterinary School is now a site that provides excellent teaching to aspiring vets, and has a safe and harmonious outdoor space for respite from the heavy workload. 

The charming Kong Arthur Hotel in Copenhagen’s Nansensgade Quarter has undergone a complete renovation with 64 new rooms and a new breakfast restaurant featuring Junckers’ Herringbone floors. The hotel has a relaxed atmosphere with elegant interiors, housed in a beautiful, late 19th Century building near Copenhagen’s historic lakes. The interior design compliments the period building with its many original features, in a style inspired by grand, turn of the century Danish apartments. Junckers’ Herringbone floors in solid oak complete the look, adding a warm, elegant backdrop.  Breakfast restaurantJunckers installed Oak Herringbone in the hotel’s light and airy new breakfast restaurant. The large rooms are flooded with natural light and have an industrial feel with fixtures, fittings and furniture in natural colours and materials. Junckers’ Oak Herringbone grounds the space perfectly with its warm tones and natural grain pattern of the timber. New hotel roomsThe 64 new hotel rooms were inspired by the classical style of a city centre Copenhagen apartment, all of them fitted with Junckers’ new Twin Herringbone flooring on solid oak. Pre-finished with a hard wearing ultra matt lacquer, Twin Herringbone is ready to walk on as soon as it is installed without the need for sanding or on-site finishing treatments. The quick and straightforward installation process saved the Hotel both time and money – installing a Twin Herringbone floor costs less than half of the installation cost of an unfinished parquet floor.

During the hotel’s modernisation, interior designer and architect Manfred Ronstedt successfully created a pleasant living environment, through carefully chosen interiors. Here, usability for guests was not to be forgotten. The accessories and fittings from KEUCO impress by perfectly uniting design with stylish comfort. Gleaming chrome finishes underscore the noble ambience of the refined interior architecture of the hotel.This 4-star business hotel of the Best Western Group is situated directly at Lake Neuchâtel, not far from the historical city centre of Neuchâtel. Wood and colours such as sand, truffle, gold and brown dominate the room design. Whilst selecting the products, Manfred Ronstedt of Ronstedt hotel concepts placed strong emphasis on the timeless elegance: "The accessories and fittings from KEUCO harmonise perfectly with the design concept of the hotel rooms – a modern ambience of well-being.“The exclusive bathroom furnishings include generously-sized showers, and some also have a bath tub. Some rooms also offer a separate WC. Ample space for setting things down at the washbasin and carefully selected KEUCO accessories from the Moll collection allow things to be comfortably organised. The straight lines and sensuous curves of the fittings harmonise perfectly with the inviting furnishings. A cosmetic mirror and a large towel holder as well as a noble sponge wire basket and handholds in the wet area underscore the comfort and high-quality touch of each bathroom. A large head shower and the additional hand shower transform showering into a spa-like experience.

An historic landmark in the Lake District has been given a new lease of life with the installation of StoTherm Mineral K external wall insulation and StoSilco finishing render. Built in 1937, the building in Keswick originally housed the UK’s first pencil factory, and now provides new headquarters and site for the Keswick Convention for the Keswick Ministries organization. After being used by the Cumberland Pencil Company the building had fallen into disrepair. Set at the entrance to Keswick, this important local landmark has now embarked on a £10.5m redevelopment project, split into four phases. The Sto materials have been used on the first phase which has seen the building’s front elevation fully restored, and they have also been specified for the remaining three stages of the work.The BBA-certified StoTherm Mineral K system combines impressive insulation with unrivalled fire protection characteristics. It features Sto-Mineral Fibre thermal insulation boards, which in this case were fixed to the substrate using StoLevell Duo Plus mineral bonding and reinforcing mortar.  “This allows any unevenness in the surface of the substrate to be accommodated and makes installation a fast and easy process,” comments Alan Rees of Eco Rend North East who installed the Sto system. This efficient single-leaf construction allows for excellent thermal performance without reducing the interior space, and as it requires no additional expansion joints, a smooth and unbroken exterior surface can be created.  An additional mineralic reinforcing coat was applied and the exterior surface was finished with StoSilco silicone resin render.  With high CO2 and water-vapour permeability, StoSilco render allows a weather- and water-repellant outer surface to be created in any of the 1,000+ colours available in the StoColor System.
