Opened in 2007, Wembley Stadium was built on the site of the previous 1923 incarnation. The earlier stadium, originally called the Empire Stadium, was often referred to as ‘The Twin Towers’ and was one of the world’s most famous football stadiums until its demolition in 2003. The 90,000-capacity venue (105,000 combined seating and standing) is the second largest stadium in Europe, behind only the Camp Nou in Barcelona, and serves as England’s national stadium. It is the sole home venue of the England national football team, and hosts the latter stages of top-level domestic club cup competitions. Designed by Foster and Partners and HOK Sport (now Populous), it includes a partially retractable roof. A signature feature of the stadium, following on from the old Wembley’s distinctive Twin Towers, is the 134-meter-high (440 ft) Wembley Arch. With a span of 317 meters (1,040 ft), this steel arch is the longest single-span roof structure in the world and, uniquely for a stadium, requires beacons for low-flying aircraft. To answer the complex brief, PPG proposed and supplied the complete anticorrosive and fire protective coating system for all externally and internally exposed steelwork of the stadium. A combination of SIGMAFAST™ 302, SIGMACOVER 435, SIGMACOVER 456 HS and SIGMADUR™ 520 coatings were applied to the steel structures in order to provide a high level of anticorrosive protection. For the required fire protection, a full three-coat fire system was used to meet the various environmental conditions around the stadium. The STEELGUARD 3146 primer and STEELGUARD FM560 solvent-based intumescent coating were chosen because they provide the required 60-minute fire rating. The topcoats used were STEELGUARD 2458 & AMERCOAT® 450SG to guarantee optimal aesthetics. The three-coat system was applied at a dedicated offsite contractor’s premises and delivered to site ready to erect. The new Wembley National Stadium was handed over in 2007, in time to host the 2007 FA Cup Final. PPG was successful in providing a solution that still protects the exposed steelwork for the arch, roof structure and internal steelwork for the bowl structure, and will do so for many years to come.

Oakworth design team recommends the use of Magply whenever the site survey and pre-contract assessment identifies a specific risk to adjacent properties in the event of a fire. The Magply boards also offer resistance to racking loads, both as part of the completed structure and during the installation process. Oakworth Production staff discovered that it not only cuts better, but the boards are not prone to cracking or splitting with the pressurised nail guns. It comes down to engineering and the design and we will always factor in the safety considerations, advising clients according on Magply as an option.

The work also involved re-lining of existing steel gutters and improving the thermal performance of the whole roof.

Due to the structural design of the building, the roof trusses once exposed meant that the roof changed from one roof to several individual roofs with their own drainage and design issues which meant that each roof had to give its own tapered scheme for each area, which in some cases had to work in tandem with the abutting roof it was next to.

The Challenge Allegiant Stadium is a global events destination with a distinctive black and silver exterior and spectacular views of the Las Vegas Strip. PPG had to match these key colors and ensure this stadium reflected the visually stunning aesthetic that would be expected of a Las Vegas destination. This project required a tight adherence to deadlines, so coatings that would be easy to apply with long-lasting protection were necessary. The Solution PPG recommended the PPG AMERCOAT® 68 HS and PPG PSX® 700 coatings system for this project. PPG AMERCOAT 68 HS is a three-component zinc-rich epoxy primer that provides excellent corrosion protection with the ability to be top coated quickly. As this primer is made for carbon steel substrates and is ideal for projects where fast turnaround is needed, it helped with keeping the project on schedule. To meet the striking silver and black color requirements, MANICA Architecture specified PPG PSX 700 in “Black Gold” and “Silver Fox” colors. PPG PSX covered the building’s exposed and unexposed structural steel due to its extended resistance to ultraviolet (UV) exposure. The Benefits PPG PSX 700 hits the three critical points of easy application, lasting protection and outstanding visual aesthetics, which were all requirements of a highly visible project like the new Allegiant Stadium. With its excellent adhesion, outstanding corrosion and chemical resistance and long-term gloss and color retention, PPG PSX 700 was the perfect choice. It significantly outlasts the best three-coat systems for long lasting protection for Allegiant Stadium.

When the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort was planned, the project included a 7-bay fire / ambulance station which featured a garden style theme to enable the buildings to harmonise with the green surrounding and the nearby Theme Park. Bolton Gate were specified to provide fourteen electric folding doors which included a special green powder coating, Lexan vision panels and faux louvres to each door. In addition, the doors had to be designed to resist typhoon loadings of up to 3Kpa, were manufactured in Bolton and shipped to Hong Kong where they were installed by the local agent Deacon.

PPG’s Coating Solutions have been used to refurbish a number of units at the Planetry Industrial Estate in Coventry. PPG provided resin flooring and other coating products to provide the long term protection and durability needed for this renovation project. The refurbishment was undertaken by Industrial Painting Contractors. For the flooring element of the project 2 coats of PPG EP301 were applied to the prepared concrete floor. PPG EP301 is a FeRFA Type 3 High Build Epoxy Floor Coating. It is ideal for use medium duty areas like industrial units that need to have a floor system installed that will withstand regular foot and medium-duty fork lift truck traffic.

Supplied and installed by Swish Approved Installer JDP Contracting Services, the Swish roofline and rainwater systems will be installed on around 500 homes per year. Swish’s Sustainable Rainwater products contain up to 84% recycled content, a combination of old windows and guttering systems. This can save up to 70% in CO2 output during the production process when compared to 100% virgin material. The recycled material is grey and is co-extruded with an outer skin of virgin material.

The small bank of fire rated mailboxes are installed internally in a residential building and securely store mail for residents. The mailboxes are fitted to the floor with the use of support legs which are secured to the concrete floor which the use of heavy-duty fixings. Support stands are colour coded to match the same finish as the bank of mailboxes.

A four-storey underground car park needs to meet enormous fire protection requirements. Preventive fire and smoke protection and fully functional escape routes and emergency exits were top of the list when planning the doors and barriers. T90 fire and smoke protection doorsets were used for highly frequented areas with a higher risk of fire and the gallery and escape routes between the individual fire compartments were fitted with single and double-leaf T30 doorsets with round glazing. Access points to the individual levels were equipped with T30 sliding doors and T30 sectional doors.

This timber frame house with badly cracked render was saved from damp and cold with ProWall seamless rendered rainscreen. The lightweight ProWall system replaced the failed render, keeping the traditional rendered look and giving a watertight, breathable facade. The existing render varied from 30mm to 60mm, and was embedded with expanded metal lathing (EML). The repetitve expansion and contraction of the EML had cracked the render around it. After removing the old render ProWall rainscreen was installed. This included new battening, an advanced render carrier board, and ventilation beads under the soffits and at the base.

Concealed within the ceiling voids of each of the 39 floors, the SmokeStop smoke curtain barriers were developed to deploy in the event of fire, channelling smoke away from occupant and out of the building. This effective strategy for containing and channelling smoke would ensure that Gherkin’s 41 floors were protected from filling with smoke and provide occupants with a safe means of escape.

Witley Court is a ruined Italianate mansion built in the seventeenth century and expanded in the early nineteenth century by the Architect John Nash. In 1937 a major accidental fire broke out and whilst the building is in ruins, it is Grade I listed and in the care of English Heritage who restored the formal gardens and fountains. Bolton Gate were engaged to design and manufacture gates replacement gates to provide night-time security with special folding bottom tracks to leave the floor surface intact and installed with great care to maintain the building’s status.

Metres from the North Sea, the 22-million-pound redevelopment of Bridlington Leisure World has a steel frame creating sweeping curves to a staggered façade, using ProBoard's ability to bend to a radius of 1.5m. The ProWall system uses a flexible ProBoard render carrier board fixed to timber battens over breather membrane, backing board and insulated steel frame. ProRend Lite was used as a lightweight basecoat incorporating ProMesh Grade 3 reinforcement mesh. The ProWall system was finished with the flexible, silicone resin based ProRend Colourtex decorative render to create a low maintenance and durable finish.

This historic property is being converted into luxury apartments and in the grounds of the palace some twenty six new houses are being constructed to be architecturally in keeping with the historic main building. Taking cues from the complex roof layout of the original palace, the new houses have numerous hips, valleys, box gutters, monoridges and even turrets. The increased levels of thermal insulation required within the roof space meant that the risk of condensation occurring out of sight in the loft voids increased dramatically.

The size and poorly insulated design of the Avon Fire & Rescue Service's existing building makes it uneconomically expensive to maintain and run. To address this, the building is being demolished in stages with a new fire station being built on a much smaller footprint. The energy performance of the building envelope was a key consideration. A target U-value of 0.23 W/m²·K was set for the walls of the building. To help achieve this Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board was specified. This has allowed the Service to not only save lives, but also energy and money.
