Assured passive fire protection for a spectacular central atrium in Dublin city centre’s largest and most prestigious new commercial development has been provided by over 300m2 of Promat SYSTEMGLAS® Ferro. The system was selected thanks to its 360 degree ‘wheel of assurance’, which ensures all the fire resistant glazing screens are checked for compliance at every stage from design and specification, through manufacture and installation. The proven butt-jointed, steel framed fire resistant glazing system has been used to create all the glass screens which encapsulate the atrium at the heart of No. 1 Dublin Landings.

Deptford Project London

Bailey - Total Building Envelope

RISE is a new eye-catching mixed-use development in the centre of Deptford in London, achieved using a combination of Bailey’s standard and bespoke building envelope products. Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, KDS Associates and Ash Sakula Architects, the contemporary, colourful eight-storey building, intended to reflect the modern vision for Deptford, provides a mix of studios, apartments and commercial space. Bailey worked with main contractor Ardmore Construction to deliver a range of durable fascias, soffits and rainscreen cladding for the project, alongside the multi-coloured privacy panels between the 115 balconied apartments.

Oakworth Homes Timber Frame use 9mm Magply in Timber Frame Construction.

Oakworth design team recommends the use of Magply whenever the site survey and pre-contract assessment identifies a specific risk to adjacent properties in the event of a fire. The Magply boards also offer resistance to racking loads, both as part of the completed structure and during the installation process. Oakworth Production staff discovered that it not only cuts better, but the boards are not prone to cracking or splitting with the pressurised nail guns. It comes down to engineering and the design and we will always factor in the safety considerations, advising clients according on Magply as an option.

Bottle Lane Self-Build Project

Bottle Lane is a private custom build home designed and constructed by Revolution Homes. The four-bedroom, detached house stands on the site of the client’s old property which was demolished to make way for a new more acoustically and thermally efficient build. As the client was overseas for the duration of the build, they wanted a company that could offer a full system build package from conceptual design to a finished product. Specialists in the custom-build market, Revolution Homes was able to supply this by employing the H+H Rå Build method of thin-joint aircrete construction.

Old Students’ Union Receives Fire Protected Roof

IKO Ultra Prevent T-O Brown cap sheet was specified for the 300m2 flat roof areas, and Armourglass Dual Brown Roofing Shingles were specified for the 200m2 pitched roofs. The roofing shingles were chosen to maintain the original slate effect on the pitched roof areas. The work also involved re-lining of existing steel gutters and improving the thermal performance of the whole roof.

Adidas Superstore, Paris - Smoke Curtain Barrier

Coopers were commissioned to design and manufacture a bespoke curtain barrier system that, in the event of fire, would guard against smoke penetrating the upper floors of the store. Through regional partner Souchie, Coopers installed a series of Smoke Stop™ vertical smoke curtains above each escalator specifically designed to protect the means of escape for customers, whilst at the same time dramatically reduce the transmission throughout the building of life threatening gases generated by fire.

School Roof Receives Much Needed Fire Protection and Waterproofing

Walker Primary School was opened in 1953 as a one-form entry primary school with seven classes. Over the years, due to its popularity, it has grown and new buildings have been added. Due to the structural design of the building, the roof trusses once exposed meant that the roof changed from one roof to several individual roofs with their own drainage and design issues which meant that each roof had to give its own tapered scheme for each area, which in some cases had to work in tandem with the abutting roof it was next to.

Swish Building Products has been named roofline and rainwater supplier for a rolling refurbishment programme by ALMO, Your Homes Newcastle (YHN). Supplied and installed by Swish Approved Installer JDP Contracting Services, the Swish roofline and rainwater systems will be installed on around 500 homes per year. Swish’s Sustainable Rainwater products contain up to 84% recycled content, a combination of old windows and guttering systems. This can save up to 70% in CO2 output during the production process when compared to 100% virgin material. The recycled material is grey and is co-extruded with an outer skin of virgin material.

York Minster Smoke Curtain Barriers

From the Tower of London to The Royal Palaces, Coopers is trusted to install fire and smoke curtains barriers for some of the world’s most iconic heritage buildings. With this knowledge, appointed architects Arrol & Snell assigned Coopers to develop a system that would help protect the cathedral’s Undercroft and Treasury from smoke migration in the event of a fire. The smoke barrier system had to allow visitors to exit the Undercroft and Treasury safely, whilst preventing smoke from entering the main body of the cathedral, but any system had to be sympathetic to its unique and ancient architecture.

Bolton Gate Thermafold Doors protect the Fire Station at Hong Kong Disneyland

When the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort was planned, the project included a 7-bay fire / ambulance station which featured a garden style theme to enable the buildings to harmonise with the green surrounding and the nearby Theme Park. Bolton Gate were specified to provide fourteen electric folding doors which included a special green powder coating, Lexan vision panels and faux louvres to each door. In addition, the doors had to be designed to resist typhoon loadings of up to 3Kpa, were manufactured in Bolton and shipped to Hong Kong where they were installed by the local agent Deacon.

Rendered rainscreen remedial for timber frame

This timber frame house with badly cracked render was saved from damp and cold with ProWall seamless rendered rainscreen. The lightweight ProWall system replaced the failed render, keeping the traditional rendered look and giving a watertight, breathable facade. The existing render varied from 30mm to 60mm, and was embedded with expanded metal lathing (EML). The repetitve expansion and contraction of the EML had cracked the render around it. After removing the old render ProWall rainscreen was installed. This included new battening, an advanced render carrier board, and ventilation beads under the soffits and at the base.

The entire building also featured ceilings acoustically isolated from the old structure where heavy duty isolators were required to be incorporated into the Rondo KEY-LOCK Concealed Suspension System. Similarly Rondo had to design a supplementary suspension system beneath these ceilings to accept a secondary system to support some services and particularly architectural feature ceiling beneath.

Coopers solution was to install over 100 SmokeStop smoke curtain barriers. Concealed within the ceiling voids of each of the 39 floors, the SmokeStop smoke curtain barriers were developed to deploy in the event of fire, channelling smoke away from occupant and out of the building. This effective strategy for containing and channelling smoke would ensure that Gherkin’s 41 floors were protected from filling with smoke and provide occupants with a safe means of escape.

Located on the Marston Trading Estate, the former site of the Tool & Gauge building has been fully refurbished, creating a hub of business activity with high spec offices, gym and a cafe. The 23,000 square foot area has been transformed from a crumbling building into a modern, attractive and inspiring space, juxtapositioning the sites' industrial heritage with modern utilities and design. The regenerated building has been equipped with class-leading architectural lighting, designed and manufactured in the UK by Hacel.

The Jackson Fire Rated project features freestanding mailboxes that conform to the BS476 Part 6 & 7. The small bank of fire rated mailboxes are installed internally in a residential building and securely store mail for residents. The mailboxes are fitted to the floor with the use of support legs which are secured to the concrete floor which the use of heavy-duty fixings. Support stands are colour coded to match the same finish as the bank of mailboxes.

he developments $247.3m price tag makes it marginally more expensive than the $246m Adelaide University building next door. HIB will house the Centre for Cancer Biology and UniSA’s pharmacy school, with 450 researchers between them. Rondo’s involvement included providing ceiling and wall systems using our Shaftwall One-Way Erected System, KEY-LOCK Concealed Ceiling System and PANTHER Access Panels to create the desired effect.

First class fire protection for the underground airport car park. 300 fire-proof doors and 52 sliding and sectional fire-resistant doors provide maximum safety on four car park levels.

A four-storey underground car park needs to meet enormous fire protection requirements. Preventive fire and smoke protection and fully functional escape routes and emergency exits were top of the list when planning the doors and barriers. T90 fire and smoke protection doorsets were used for highly frequented areas with a higher risk of fire and the gallery and escape routes between the individual fire compartments were fitted with single and double-leaf T30 doorsets with round glazing. Access points to the individual levels were equipped with T30 sliding doors and T30 sectional doors.

Our ProWall rendered cladding gives a contemporary finish for these spacious familiy properties. We worked closely with this build in North Devon, giving site support at the battening, boarding, and rendering stages to ensure the ProWall system was applied to specification. SAS Europe also trained 15 members of the application team at a day course in our render training centre. Finished with ProRend Colourtex silicone thin coat render, available in various colours and textures.

Rondo supplied an extensive range of ceiling and partition systems, as well as technical support throughout the project, which included design for all the internal walls, shelf loads, balustrade design utilising stud and track as well as ongoing support throughout the project construction period in regards to Rondo products within the design criteria.

Metres from the North Sea, the 22-million-pound redevelopment of Bridlington Leisure World has a steel frame creating sweeping curves to a staggered façade, using ProBoard's ability to bend to a radius of 1.5m. The ProWall system uses a flexible ProBoard render carrier board fixed to timber battens over breather membrane, backing board and insulated steel frame. ProRend Lite was used as a lightweight basecoat incorporating ProMesh Grade 3 reinforcement mesh. The ProWall system was finished with the flexible, silicone resin based ProRend Colourtex decorative render to create a low maintenance and durable finish.

London Fire Brigade

Signbox completed architectural internal and external signage work for the London Fire Brigade at nine fire stations across the capital. The task required the delivery of a robust signage package that demanded long-lasting, quality materials. External work included the installation of post and plank-mounted signs finished with a vitreous enamel coating, marine grade stainless steel lettering and red enamelled aluminium trays. Internal signage work comprised an elegant modular sign system with the flexibility to change to reflect organisational adjustments. Manifestation graphics were installed on glazed partitions and bespoke statutory fire signage was made to complement each building.

Bolton Gate protect Grade 1 listed building at Witley Court

Witley Court is a ruined Italianate mansion built in the seventeenth century and expanded in the early nineteenth century by the Architect John Nash. In 1937 a major accidental fire broke out and whilst the building is in ruins, it is Grade I listed and in the care of English Heritage who restored the formal gardens and fountains. Bolton Gate were engaged to design and manufacture gates replacement gates to provide night-time security with special folding bottom tracks to leave the floor surface intact and installed with great care to maintain the building’s status.

The size and poorly insulated design of the Avon Fire & Rescue Service's existing building makes it uneconomically expensive to maintain and run. To address this, the building is being demolished in stages with a new fire station being built on a much smaller footprint. The energy performance of the building envelope was a key consideration. A target U-value of 0.23 W/m²·K was set for the walls of the building. To help achieve this Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board was specified. This has allowed the Service to not only save lives, but also energy and money.

The Red House, Frome

NUDURA’s Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) building system was selected for this low energy house clad in western red cedar. ‘The Red House’ is an Architect’s home designed to have exceptional levels of insulation combined with high thermal mass. The actual energy performance of the building, is outstanding. In the first year after commissioning, the data revealed there were zero energy costs.

With fire safety being critical in modern construction projects, WeWorks developed and implemented a new fire safety strategy before renovating the existing building. As part of this strategy, the decision was taken to replace a fully-glazed non-fire-rated internal atrium with a new, high-performance fire-rated solution to ensure the highest levels of fire protection. Spanning five storeys, the atrium would create a functional yet architecturally stunning light-filled centrepiece within the modern office space.

The specification for ‘Base Camp’ at the O2 presented some technical challenges in waterproofing the building while delivering the aesthetics required by bblurr Architecture. Bailey worked with the architect and specialist sub-contractor to deliver bespoke detailing in order to achieve the correct interface between the building envelope elements. The rainscreen cladding was installed using the Bailey secret fix system. The panels were horizontal on one elevation and vertical on the next which made the wall interfaces difficult to install, these issues were designed out by Bailey. For the waterproofing layer Bailey Atlantic sustainable single ply membrane was utilized.

ALUFIRE at University College London

An ALUFIRE fire rated partition wall has been installed within the Engineering Building at UCL. The solution had to provide a minimum 30 minutes insulation and fire resistance while still allowing natural light to flood the atrium. The ALUFIRE system proved not only a cheaper option than a like-for-like replacement of the existing damaged retractable fire curtain, but also provided an enhanced modern appearance and dramatically reduced transmittance of noise from the busy café area below into the lecture rooms on the first floor.

Fire Escape Hatches - Portugal

Surespan manufactured and supplied a series of fire escape hatches at Portugal’s €950 million underground Metro in Porto. The huge double leaf hatches automatically open if the fire alarm system is activated to allow passengers safe exit to ground level. In addition they can be manually opened with the touch of a button. This project was undertaken after Surespan successfully carried out similar work at Athens Metro.

Arena 1865 had to take several design criteria into consideration including provision of fire protection to safeguard the 4,500 spectators the steel framed structure can accommodate, while rigidity, all round durability and ease of installation were important. Simon Pugh-Jones outlined ‘We looked at a full range of board solutions including high performance gypsum and recycled plastic, but when we got into the science and the costings, it soon became clear the only board which ticked all the boxes was Magply’. Some 2000 m2 of the Magply 9mm boards were consumed in the main passageway beneath the Stand.
