Multiple Junckers floors for award-winning office interior

No less than eight different solid wood floors from Junckers were used as part of the spectacular design for US company Slack’s new headquarters in San Francisco. Installed as both flooring and wall panelling, various timbers, colours and finishes were used to tell the interior story. A floor-by-floor tour takes you on a nature trail. Taking inspiration from the company CEO’s passion for the outdoors, architects Studio O+A used the Pacific Crest Trail as the basis for their design. All ten floors convey a different terrain found on the wilderness trail, from desert landscapes to mountain peaks. For a design centred around nature itself, the architects specified Junckers’ wooden floors for their natural beauty and functionality. The beauty of the grain pattern found in real wood can never be replicated, and a solid wood floor is a durable, sustainable choice for a busy office space. The project has received numerous design accolades and awards, including a place on the “2019 World’s 10 Most Beautiful Offices’ list. Dawn explains;"We were keen to install a product that would last, so finding a product that we could trust to perform well, with good thermal and security ratings was crucial. Once we had visited the Build Centre in London to view some of Mumford and Wood’s full-sized products, we were very impressed by the quality and aesthetics, so we just knew they were the manufacturer for us."Dawn and David expressed that they wanted a clean look for their beautiful home and so we recommended flush Conservation Casement windows and doors, including slimmer glazing bars. We also supplied roof lanterns to the orangery, allowing lots of light.They were also very keen to ensure that the glass sightlines were consistent across each window and door, despite them being different sizes. Working very closely with the architect, we were able to ensure that sightlines remained similar, resulting in a clean, symmetrical look, throughout the building, irrespective of product dimension and shape.Mumford & Wood, Sales Manager, Alex comments;"As soon as the client confirmed they wanted a clean, but traditional look for their home, I knew that our Conservation Range would be perfect for them. MAEL maintains its own fleet of aircraft, as well as those of other airlines and the UK military. Due to business growth, in 2013 MAEL opened a new maintenance hangar in Birmingham. Hangars have traditionally had fixed docking solutions, where the aircraft must be positioned in place under overhead safety rails or lifelines. However, MAEL’s new hangar was built to offer far fewer restrictions as to working location.

Hush Acoustics was tasked with providing an acoustic separating floor solution in an extensive material change of use project in Southall. Phoenix House was being converted by Vascroft Construction from an office building to residential flats, in a project which involved building into the basement, adding two floors and expanding at the rear.The development of 149 flats, each of which comprises 2 bedrooms, 1 ensuite, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen/living area, required an effective design for the separating floors to ensure they would be effectively soundproofed throughout across multiple different floor finishes.After assessing a number of floor construction materials, Hush Panel 28 floating floor panels were selected to meet the acoustic performance targets. Using this panel meant that throughout the bedrooms and living areas a simple underlay could be laid before the finished carpets or engineered timber floor were installed. Hush Panel 28 was also suitable for the floors in the wet rooms and entrance hallways by applying Detromat on top of the panel to form an anti cracking surface.A team of more than 100 operatives worked on site, with every 1000 sq. m of floor completed per week, which Hush Acoustics supported to ensure Vascroft could meet the project’s strict delivery schedule.

The designers for the new offices in Atherstone, Warwickshire focused on creating a building that would be in tune both with its rural surroundings and also with the inventive and artistic profession of the occupants. The premises are the headquarters and design studio for a well known video game development company.The design of the building is based on a large barn with attractive contemporary wooden panelling and external posts and beams. Running alongside these posts and beams is dramatic bespoke aerofoil solar shading and weather louvres.As a perfect colourful contrast for offsetting the wood, ‘Copper Mine’ - gives the effect of patinated copper or Verdigris. The project comprises of 475 linear metres of 170mm elliptical aerofoil blades.The final effect of the blue/green aerofoil fins set against the wood is stunning as the images show. ‘Copper Mine’ is a textured finish and will give a pleasing variation in shade as sunlight moves across its surface

Harlequin fitted new battens to strengthen the stage over which a further double-layer of wood ply was installed. The stage surface was finished with a black Harlequin Standfast vinyl performance floor. Heavy Duty Drainage for Merry Hill Shopping Centre

The Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill recently underwent an expansion and overhaul of its entrance area. Aspen were approached to design, manufacture and install bespoke drainage for the newly renovated entrance area to the shopping centre.Aspen worked closely with the client to manufacture and install stainless steel solutions to support the performance of the outdoor environment. There was great importance placed on the rainwater calculations and anti-slip resistance to ensure the channels and covers were fit for purpose in an outdoor setting. Aspen provided engineering drawings, samples and prototypes to ensure a seamless manufacturing process and delivery of the project from day one.Aspen Stainless HD Heel Guard Drain Cover and Drain Channels were specifically designed to support the flow of rainwater within the entrance area. The standard central bottom Meribel Outlet was installed to efficiently dispose of non-liquid waste built up within the outlet. The trap featured fully removable trash baskets to allow for the efficient disposal of non-liquid waste, built up within the outlet.The HD Heel Guard Cover was specifically tested using the pendulum anti-slip test. The pendulum assesses the friction offered by the floor when a foot comes into contact with the surface. The cover was tested to ensure that the surface presents a safe level of grip in end use. The pendulum anti-slip has proven to deliver the most accurate results and is therefore the key adopted method for assessing floor slipperiness in all conditions. The pendulum CoF test is the subject is a British Standard, BS 7976: Parts 1-3 using an imitation heel (rubber soling sample) sweeping over the drain cover. The slipperiness of the flooring has a direct impact on the value provided and is therefore the adopted method for assessing floor slipperiness in all conditions.The dedicated project manager worked closely with the contractor during the installation process to ensure highest standards for drainage and protection were achieved. ‘The STEAMhouse building’, launched by Birmingham University is the winner of the Victorian Society’s Birmingham and West Midlands Conservation Award, in recognition of outstanding restoration.The STEAMhouse building dates back to 1899 and was seriously damaged by fire in 2007. Previously used as a manufacturer for the Eccles Rubber & Cycle Company this Grade A listed building undertook a £70m transformation to become the creative hub it is today. The space now supports businesses, academics, hosting companies and start-up businesses, supporting enterprise and industry. The Victorian Society was so impressed with the transformation of this historic building that it has been presented with the 'Birmingham and West Midlands Conservation Award 2023', in recognition of outstanding restoration.Mumford & Wood supported this transformation by designing and manufacturing 45 bespoke timber windows and door, tailored to fit the unique openings found on the façade of the building.Matthew Blaylock, Commercial Director, Mumford & Wood states:“We enjoy the challenges that listed buildings bring, and so with strict planning requirements in place, we understood the importance of replicating the detail of the original windows but offering the performance of a modern day product. The National Flooring Company, a Degafloor Ltd approved installer, have received another complimentary review following a kitchen refurbishment on the 23rd floor at a popular 4-star hotel in Manchester. Making the most of the quieter, New Year period, the hotel decided to upgrade their kitchen floor. Having worked at other locations for the popular hotel chain, The National Flooring Company were contacted to provide advice and following a successful proposal, were asked to complete the refurbishment. The kitchen, which is situated on the 23rd floor, required meticulous planning to ensure that works could be completed with minimal disruption to the hotel’s guests. The existing vinyl floor within the kitchen had become worn and brittle and sections were beginning to lift, causing a potential trip hazard. The vinyl floor was removed to expose the tiled finish underneath. Any loose tiles that had debonded from the floor were also removed and infilled with Degafloor Deep Fill, quick curing repair mortar.The National Flooring Company laid a scrape coat, embedded with a promesh reinforcing membrane, prior to the installation of the Degafloor Full Broadcast System (FB). The Degafloor FB system is broadcast with rounded aggregate to provide an anti-slip finish and retains this feature even in wet conditions to ensure employee safety is always maintained. As with all Degafloor systems, they are seamless and impervious, ensuring the floor will not lift, as previously experienced with the existing vinyl floor finish. Degafloor MMA resin flooring systems are fully cured within 2 hours of installation, allowing the hotel to resume normal kitchen operating procedures shortly after completion. MMA resins have a distinctive odour, but with the correct management, installations can progress with very little disruption. The National Flooring Company used the kitchen extraction system and sealed all doorways to contain and manage the odour.The project was completed to the satisfaction of the Chief Engineer, Hilton MCR, who commented on how good the floor looked. “The restaurant being on the 23rd floor presented a logistical challenge. However, after careful planning and consideration of our hotel operations, The National Flooring Company completed the installation efficiently and to a high standard. We were impressed with the service from start to finish.”

Home refurbishment timber window and door project

Georgina and Matt were undertaking a refurbishment to their family home in Surrey, including a new annexe, when they approached us about our range of timber windows and doors.The age of the original building dated back to the 16th century, with both Regency and Edwardian additions, and so finding timber windows that helped to retain and enhance the original character of the property was a priority.Spring Sash windows from the Conservation Range were recommended for most of the home, featuring concealed pre-tensioned balances. This offered Georgina classic period styling but also ensured the house benefitted from the high performance offered by a modern double-glazed window.Conservation Range Casement windows were used for the rest of the property, alongside Spring Sash products offering traditional sightlines - ideal for period properties.Georgina also wanted to ensure that the new outbuildings retained a traditional look, so we created a bespoke ‘sunrise’ feature window to give it interest and kept the styling in line with the rest of the renovation.Antique brass ironmongery and a ‘Wimbourne White’ paint finish, complements the classic look throughout.Georgina explains;“When I approached Mumford & Wood, I told them I felt a ‘Jane Austen’ period feel would fit well with the main era of the house. After witnessing the quality and elegant style of the Conservation Range at their London showroom, I felt confident that my Regency vision with a mixture of Spring Sash and Casement windows could be fulfilled, and I was thrilled with the end result. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mumford and Wood to anyone.”

In April 2010 the Tepid Baths closed for repairs and a major makeover. As part of this renovation project Accoya® wood was chosen for its durability and stability especially for its use in wet and humid environments such as swimming pools. New Zealand distributor, Timspec supplied the Accoya wood which was used for the changing room doors, seats and frames.
At nearly 100 years old, the building will remain a great place to swim for the next 50 years.

Aspen worked closely with Trundley Design to design effective hygienic plant equipment for a number of food processing plants across the UK.The drainage system was installed to support the cleaning regime and water flow around the factory. This blended perfectly with the John Lord flooring design and allowed for waste to drain effectively into the surrounding channels and gullies; creating a seamless connection between the systems and prevented any standing waste and bacteria from building up.
