Members of Crown’s specification team collaborated closely with Cardiff City Council and professional painting contractor JJ Williams (Painting Services) Ltd, to devise a cost-effective and high-performance paint specification for the redecoration of the famous clock tower. Originally created as monument to Captain Robert Scott and his companions who set sail from Cardiff on their ill-fated voyage to Antarctica in 1910, the clock tower has become a popular and recognisable part of the city’s heritage and stands proudly in the middle of Roath Park Lake.

As we were unloading Gypsol Complete into the silo, the material was being produced for delivery to the site, ensuring a much faster batching process and increasing our ability to deliver in short lead times.’ The batches of Gypsol Complete were then delivered to AJ Wilson in North Devon, UK, at two sites in Lifton and Buckland Brewer.

The demand for an energy-efficient hot water distribution system was met by a single-pipe system with 850m of RAYCHEM HWAT-R self-regulating heating cables, managed by nine RAYCHEM HWAT-ECO smart controllers that interface seamlessly with the BMS. Eliminating the need for the secondary pipework of a conventional recirculation system saved space and achieved cost savings of between five and ten percent in material and installation time. Pipe freeze protection was also provided by RAYCHEM WinterGard self-regulating cables, supported by an AT-TS-13 surface-sensing electronic thermostat.

Ringway Jacobs, on behalf of Essex Highways, have permanently repaired a dangerous pothole using UltraCrete Tough Patch®.BackgroundA large pothole had been causing disruption to motorists and homeowners in Great Notley in Essex. Located in the wheel track of a busy residential road, the pothole needed repairing quickly and permanently to minimise disruption and eliminate any potential damage to vehicles.The ChallengeRingway Jacobs had been let down by a number of pothole repair materials in the past, causing further disruption and upset to motorists, and costly repeat visits for them. Finding a first time permanent solution was of the utmost importance to the team at Ringway Jacobs.The SolutionBefore the damaged area was repaired, any loose debris was removed to create a dust and contaminant free area. Once clear, the vertical edges and surface base was sprayed with SCJ seal and tack coat spray to prevent water ingress and improve bond. Once applied, Tough Patch® was poured into the pothole and compacted with a plate.To complete the repair, Instaband ECO thermoplastic overbanding tape was applied to each edge to prolong the life of the repair.Tough Patch® is a PTS PAS approved, cold lay surface material for road repairs, which utilises a reactive binder that rapidly cures to create a first time, permanent repair that will accept traffic immediately after installation. The £45 million world-class School of Management is the flagship building of the University of Bath. The seven-storey building brings together the entire school under one roof and is a place to inspire new levels of collaboration and showcase the excellent learning, research, and industry partnerships available.The three principles of the design are flexibility, transparency, and collaboration. At the centre of the building is an impressive atrium with a feature steel staircase.   Within the atrium is the pavilion, a double height space flooded with natural light has been designed as a hub of activity where great minds meet. The buildings two arms emerge from a central node, each wing housing an array of academic and research space. The design brief called for openness and transparency which was achieved by the use of Lusso glazed partitioning throughout. The Lusso 25 glazed system and Silenzio doors were used to enhance and divide up space which at the same time allows natural light to filter through the building and encourage connectivity. Where the design required glass partitions in excess of 3.5 metres height the Lusso 105 glazed system was selected to meet the structural requirement which has created a visually impactful atrium.

Architect: AtkinsInstaller: Vitec Ceilings and PartitionsProduct: Gustafs Linear RibA small but perfectly executed project at 75m2, the new Bracknell Forest Council chambers at the Times Square building in Berkshire is clad with Gustafs Linear Ribs to the ceiling and feature wall.The plain white ceiling ribs are organised into multiple square rafts across the space installed in alternating directions and interspersed with traditional ceiling tiles, lighting, and vents.The split feature wall which stands either side of the speakers’ podium and main panel desks is made up of a mixture of natural Oak and Bamboo veneer and painted ribs installed with irregularly positioned 45° angled joints.The ribs were delivered oversized and cut to size on site, the mitre joints were also cut on site by Vitec and joined using extra-long installation clips to keep the joint inline and give the illusion of a dip-dyed rib.

A new distribution centre at Littlebrook Business Park features market leading Gatic CastSlot Littlebrook (Orbital 47) is home to several industrial companies which rely on the near constant movement of goods.“Our work involved the installation of Gatic Slotdrain in a distribution centre at Littlebrook,” said Zach Graham, Alumasc Area Sales Manager for London and the South East. “The distribution centre is in an ideal location due to the surrounding environment with easy access to the M25. Further to this, as the loading area was fairly small, it is put under a lot of pressure every day, with constantly turning vehicles. This meant that any surface water management product installed had to be guaranteed to withstand extremely heavy and frequent loads.”In an area where unremitting, slow turning traffic is a major consideration, Gatic CastSlot, from the Gatic Slotdrain range, was an obvious choice in providing a reliable water management system for this project. Architects Morgan Sindall was charged with creating a state-of-the art, energy efficient building including the hot water distribution system. A specific requirement was for the system to be able to raise temperatures monthly, for the prevention of legionella. A single-pipe solution was designed, using 1.8km of nVent RAYCHEM HWAT-R self-regulating cables to maintain 60°C. Supported by 15 nVent RAYCHEM HWAT-ECO smart controllers, the necessary legionella prevention cycles could be met, pipe temperatures could be varied (to provide setback temperature savings) and thermal boosts to 65°C implemented during times of non-occupancy.

Harmer Building Drainage, part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions, has been specified for the luxury apartments at Chelsea Bridge in Battersea. The project is the latest phase of Battersea Park Development, Vista. It is a landmark development, designed by Scott Brownrigg and built by Berkeley Homes, consisting of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments, with the remaining properties ranging from £895,000 to £1.910 million – and they are selling fast. There is extensive outdoor landscaping and each group of apartments benefit from feature terraces and private balconies so they can take advantage of spectacular views over Battersea Park and towards the River Thames.Harmer’s expertise and existing relationship with Architects Scott Brownrigg and Berkeley Homes were major factors in winning the contract. Both were aware Harmer could supply a high-end product in an achievable lead time. Constant open dialogue with all parties helped get the project off to a smooth start. Accurate specification, with Harmer’s in-depth knowledge of products and issues, and close involvement at every stage, means any challenges during the project are quickly rectified. The development is due for completion in 2018.

F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s newest high-performance water-mix smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 1500 AquaPro, has been used alongside the company’s Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive to provide a time-saving solution for installing floorcoverings in Derbyshire’s largest hospital.Derbyshire Flooring Contractors installed an eye-catching bespoke vinyl flooring design in the waiting area and connecting corridors of the children’s outpatient ward at Royal Derby Hospital, a total area of 800m2.The floors in the ward required refurbishing as the old floorcoverings had become worn. Work needed to be carried out in the evening, in stages, so that it would not interfere with the day-to-day running of the ward. Requiring a time-saving solution, contractors opted to use Stopgap 1500 AquaPro water-mix smoothing underlayment, avoiding the need to remove old adhesive residues.Stopgap 1500 AquaPro uses the latest technology to offer a water-mix smoothing underlayment that can be applied over old adhesive residues, including bitumen, carpet tile tackifiers and ceramic tile adhesives. In such applications, there is no need to prime beforehand, saving further time and expense. Fast-setting and fast-drying, it is walk-on hard in as little as 60 minutes after application and ready to receive floorcoverings from just four hours.Work began with the labour-intensive task of uplifting old floorcoverings. Stopgap 1500 AquaPro was then applied at a thickness of 3mm over the subfloors to create a perfectly smooth base for new floorcoverings.A bespoke two-tone design, resembling a river running through the children’s ward with ‘islands’ of colour either side, was created by cutting shapes from two different colours of Polyflor Classic Mystique PUR vinyl sheet flooring, with the pieces adhered using Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive.Styccobond F46 provides instant grab, preventing floorcoverings from sliding when placed, helping with the creation of designs and patterns. The adhesive is also formulated to minimise the incidence of trowel serrations showing through thin vinyl flooring potentially affecting the finished appearance of installations.Commenting on the project, Mark Grant, Managing Director at Derbyshire Flooring Contractors, said: “We like using F. Ball products – they’re really good quality and reliable. Amazon has invested heavily in its UK operations in recent years and more recently with the accelerated growth of online shopping, significantly increasing its number of warehouses across the UK. One such distribution centre is in Kingsnorth, Kent. Alicante Port, the well renowned commercial and cruise ship terminal has been upgraded to benefit from a Gatic Slotdrain high-capacity surface water drainage system.Slotdrain UltraSlot was specified during the re-conditioning of Dock 19 to increase capacity from 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to 463,000 TEU.“UltraSlot was chosen by specifier SETI, SA, who are well established within the ports sector and who have worked with Gatic products for many years,” said International Sales Manager – Luis Triguero “The engineer in charge was familiar with the mechanical and hydraulic advantages of UltraSlot and requested a competitive price for the project. Integrated Alumasc Water Management Solutions specified on new mixed-use development.The site of a derelict petrol station located in the historical town of Hemel Hempstead has recently been transformed into a new retail and residential development.Bovingdon High Street now features eight brand new apartments and a new Tesco express outlet, bringing new life into the once disused space near the town centre.The unique design of the site coupled with the number of dwellings planned, saw a number of challenging design factors for the project, including curved roofs and the need for soffits within a confined space.This is where Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) come into their own, offering a complete solution. An integrated Skyline and Rainwater offering was specified across the development, including Skyline’s bespoke aluminium fascia, soffits & copings. AX moulded extruded gutter systems with combined Swaged downpipes where also part of the final specification. All finished in a BBA approved, polyester powder coated finish, the final look achieved demonstrates understated quality, in dusty grey colour (RAL 7037) specifically to match the windows and balconies on the project.“Thankfully we were consulted early in the project, which is where we are most effective,” commented John Hemphill, Skyline Technical Sales Manager, who worked on the project.“We had a number of site meetings, which resulted in designing and submitting CAD and 3D drawings in order to ensure the project was delivered on time.”

There is nothing quite like an ambitious project executed to the highest standard.This complete rebuild and extension of a late Victorian terraced house in Brockley, south east London, presented challenges at every turn. The existing house suffered from the addition of poor-quality extensions and structural problems, but was redesigned by Conibere Philips architects with the specification of Alumasc Rainwater Flushjoint downpipes and hoppers. This ensured elegant and efficient water management, as well as security against water ingress into the new masterpiece of a home.“It’s extremely unusual for a mid-terrace to be demolished and rebuilt in this way, but it was decided as the most economic and sensible course of action to take in this case. This also allowed us to adapt the property on rebuilding to look much more contemporary and elegant,” explained Robin Philips, Partner Director at Conibere Philips. Elegance was also firmly the desired direction when considering water management.“We chose to specify Rainwater Flushjoint downpipes and hoppers from Alumasc to maximise on their sleek and minimal design that would further contribute to the contemporary look of the building,” Robin confirms.“The joints in the RWP sections are very elegant. The whole effect is much less cluttered than most other RWP products. A simple, modern elevation would have been ruined with more traditional RWP products.”

The system is low-maintenance, a critical factor due to the sensitive nature of this building and can now be very easily extended during further planned developments.

The new clubhouse of the Machrihanish Golf Course has had its water management upgraded thanks to the installation of two Alumasc Rainwater products: Aqualine Box Extruded Aluminium Gutter and Flushjoint Aluminium downpipesThe golf course, founded in 1876, recently had its clubhouse rebuilt after a fire in December 2018 destroyed the original building. Local contractor McKinven and Colville Ltd carried out the work on the new clubhouse which was designed by G1 Architects. As the system uses half the pipework of a conventional re-circulation system the installation time was cut dramatically and much needed space savings were made in walls and ceiling voids.

The Kingspan TEK Building System and Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel have been installed as part of the new Seaton Jurassic visitor centre in Devonshire, forming the gateway to the region’s historic Jurassic Coast. BREEAM ‘Very Good’ was a central requirement on the project, and the Kingspan TEK products delivered the excellent thermal and airtightness performance that was needed in a single operation. As a result, costs were reduced and speed of construction was significantly increased when compared with a traditional stud wall approach.

In its largest building project in over 100 years, the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Exhibition Road Quarter achieves architectural cohesion between museum and street with the help of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) and Alumasc Roofing Systems. The Royal Albert Hall in the heart of vibrant west London is distinctive for its unique circular architecture and Victorian styling, and famous for bringing a wealth of high-brow art and culture to the city since it opened in 1871.A building such as the Royal Albert Hall is not only a building, but part of the heritage of its surrounding community. For this reason, the Royal Albert Hall Grade One Listed and meaning all proposed renovation works must meet strict regulations put in place to ensure the preservation and respectful enhancement of the building.Sir Robert McAlpine were awarded the overall contract to deliver a programme of upgrade, renovation and refurbishment work. So, when it came to replacing the original water management systems that had been in place since it’s opening, the challenge was on to find a manufacturer and installer that would bring the Hall the best products possible that were also in keeping with these requirements.Gutterworks, an Alumasc approved installer, installed Alumasc Rainwater management systems during the refurbishment in 2018. Alumasc was chosen for its ability to analyse and precisely recreate the original gutter and pipe mouldings that were used in the originally installed systems, therefore contributing to the preservation of the historic building. Over ten years ago, Alumasc Rainwater management systems were installed in a similar project at Kings Cross St Pancras Station.

As part of a major transformation of Wembley Park, which includes Olympic Way, Wade Stainless Steel Linear Channels and Streamline, and perforated gratings were installed beneath the Olympic Steps to provide an effective and long-lasting drainage solution.Built by developer Quintain in a joint project with Brent Council, the Olympic Steps come at the end of Olympic Way—the stretch of road linking Wembley underground station to Wembley Stadium. It was named Olympic Way after it was originally constructed for the 1948 London Olympics.The final stages of this redevelopment were the iconic steps that lead up to the national stadium. The original ramp, known as the pedway, was built as part of the old Wembley Stadium and acted as a bridge over the old coach parks. The Olympic Steps development replaced the outdated, concrete pedway and extended the Olympic Way, increasing the width by 50% and improving accessibility for all visitors in and around Wembley Park. Volker Fitzpatrick was the main contractor on the project.“Working closely with Mick Hawkins, the Site Manager, the aim of the project was to fulfil the client’s drainage requirements to tight deadlines,” says Brian Holden-Earl, Area Sales Manager. “The area is frequently used by visitors, so it was important to deliver our services within a specific timescale.”

Stowford Mill, built in 1787, is one of Devon’s oldest historic industrial sites to still be expanding.Because of its iconic features and characteristic atmosphere, Stowford Mill has long been established as one of the trendiest places to work, eat and shop, bringing commerce and prosperity to the surrounding area, and forcing the town to expand to make room for tourists who just never wanted to leave.Part of this expansion will eventually include Burrington Estates’ eight-acre vibrant community of contemporary new homes. This new development, for which the main contractor is URBN, is due for completion in 2023.Started in March 2018, the existing homes already include Alumasc Rainwater Infinity Steel gutters and downpipes, specified to provide eco-friendly, discreet and resilient water management that will last. Crucially, this system was favoured to the use of plastic systems, to meet the demand for a readily available product that was both environmentally- and price-conscious.As the new development creates a unique new environment in which to live, work and relax in the midst of the historic area, the most important part of the project was to keep the best of the stunning architectural heritage already there, whilst finding innovative ways to incorporate the latest modern building design. Helping to bridge this gap between the historic and the modern, AWMS offered a solution.“Alumasc systems were chosen as it was the project’s requirements to specifically use steel for gutters and downpipes,” David Loader, Key Account Manager at Alumasc, explained.

Located on the picturesque waterfront of West Kirby, Wirral, The Sail is home to eight luxury apartments on South Parade overlooking the River Dee estuary to Wales. The building itself has a striking geometric form with a unique glass façade, reminiscent of art deco coastal properties from the 1930s.The apartments occupy four storeys over one thousand square metres and are flooded with an abundance of natural light thanks to the floor to ceiling windows, which also emphasise a strong connection to the outdoors. Alumasc Water Management Solutions were asked to assist and supply a number of bespoke products including aluminium fascia, modular soffit and coping systems from Skyline.  “Skyline was specified for its quality and ability to provide bespoke designs and solutions,” says Ivan Colvil, Senior Skyline Technical Sales Manager. “Numerous profiles were needed due to the building’s unique shape, which presented a challenge. It took a great deal of technical support and working with the architect to fulfil the brief.

Design consultants AECOM delivered efficient hot water distribution using 800m of RAYCHEM HWAT-M self-regulating cables, to provide a single-pipe system throughout the building. Its compact design, eliminated the need for recirculation pipes, thus enabling the system to be installed in restricted spaces. Pipe freeze protection was achieved using 300m of RAYCHEM WinterGard self-regulating cables. Snow and ice prevention on the car park access ramp was provided by 1200 metres of RAYCHEM EM2-XR selfregulating cable controlled by a VIA-DU-20 multi-sensor control unit.

nVent was brought in to employ a variety of heating solutions at the London Rolex Building. Rolex was looking to convert its heating to a simpler, lower cost single pipe system requiring less maintenance. nVent provided hot water services using the RAYCHEM HWAT single pipe hot water temperature maintenance system. More than 400 meters of cable were installed to provide hot water all the way to the point of use, 600 metres of pipe freezeprotection to safeguard the chilled water supply lines from freezing. In addition, the entrance foyer welcomes visitors with the warmth of RAYCHEM QuickNet floor heating systems.

Bespoke twin goods lifts enhancing space and time in Holland and Barrett’s warehouse in Staffordshire, EnglandLödige Industries installs two reliable goods lifts to increase production efficiency in the warehouseHolland and Barrett’s pick, pack and dispatch warehouse in Burton upon Trent has multiple levels. Previously goods were transferred between levels with forklift trucks and pallet gates. However, the a huge spike in orders made the forklift trucks and pallet gates inefficient and impractical. In addition, the number of forklifts operating in a congested area were a cause for concern. To meet the growing demand, Lödige Industries installed two SHERPA goods lifts with multi-level and multi-directional stops, including one for a future mezzanine level yet to be installed, thus future proofing the solution. As a result, H&B has been able to support the increase in its online processes business growth by enabling a higher throughput in its warehouseby operating in an efficient warehouse. The existing lifting processes via forklifts were no longer expandable. By installing twin SHERPA goods only lifts with free standing shafts, all three floors of the warehouse can now be accessed safely and efficiently. As the SHERPA can be installed into any building without any alterations such as pits, there was limited impact during construction.A potential third mezzanine level has already been taken into account and the highest level served has a lifting height of 9.05m. The lifts now enable fast transportation between all floors and open up the possibility of further storage space. Cabin size has been tailored to Holland & Barrett’s goods to ensure the most efficient transportation processes.Integrating with Holland and Barrett’s work routines to ensure uninterrupted processesThe warehouse is a fast-paced and hard-pressed working hive of activity. Avoiding any negative impact on throughput, delivery times and processes was therefore imperative. Lödige Industries team worked closely integrated with Holland and Barrett’s operations team and partners to adjust installation work to daily warehouse routines; the experienced team of engineers were able to adjust their installation to their production times. Therefore, the installation could productivelywas accomplished without impacting warehouse performance go ahead. Fast installation and delivery ensured continuous production and early gains for the customer. Despite the challenges of COVID-19 and its impact on supply chains, Lödige Industries completed the installation ahead of schedule.Enabling construction in an existing facility- a temporary scaffold meets special customer requirementsThe existing warehouse posed a few challenges in the installation of the new lifts. Many lifts require a temporary lifting beam during installation, to facilitate multiple lifting points. However, like many modern warehouses, the facility in Burton upon Trend did not have a lifting beam. As this was required for both lifts, Lödige Industries developed a concept for an extended load bearing beam, that was created and installed by one of Holland & Barrett’s partners in this project.SolutionIntegrating with Holland and Barrett’s daily routines ensured continuous production to address the rising demands and orders.The SHERPA goods lifts are transporting goods over four floors. This allows the customer to maximise its warehouse space and move their goods quicker and more efficiently.To facilitate multiple lifting points and transport unstable loads, Lödige Industries provided a temporary scaffold platform.

Harmer Building Drainage, part of Alumasc Water Management Systems (AWMS), has recently supplied its leading SML below ground drainage system to a major London development. The project, sited at The Minories, Aldgate, sees the introduction of the first Canopy by Hilton hotel in the UK which is scheduled to open in 2018. Working with contractors PCW Drainage Ltd and A J Morrisroe, Harmer supplied below ground drainage for the hotel’s new double storey basement box.The Minories Hilton hotel is a prestigious development, close to London’s historic Roman and medieval city walls and a short walk from the East End. Wayne Wilmot, National Sales Manager for Harmer Drainage comments: “It’s an unusual site. The contractor, A J Morrisroe, constructed a double storey basement box and podium slab to support a 16 storey residential block and a 14 storey hotel extension. It covers a footprint of around 3,500 metres across a narrow site. There were multiple levels of earlier construction to work through, including foundations and piles that date back to the 19th century. And because it’s close to the East End, The Museum of London and 1st Line Defence got involved to establish if there were any WW2 unexploded bombs buried on the site! Definitely not a run-of-the-mill project!

Skyline fascia soffits from architectural rainwater specialists Alumasc, have been used for the extensive refurbishment of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon.Driven by the need to enable all-weather play, renovation of the legendary Centre Court included a state-of-the-art retractable roof. From the outset, Alumasc worked closely with Architects Populous of London, on the massive six-year undertaking which resulted in one of Alumasc’s largest rainwater product installations to date. Alumasc’s Skyline soffit system was specified for the underside canopy of the stadium bowl, in order to meet the demanding performance requirements for the arena’s ceiling cladding. 6000 individual soffit modules were supplied, in 80 varying profiles and sizes, totalling an impressive 6500m² of aluminium and associated fittings. Dedication to client support was priority, with Alumasc attending numerous site meetings and manning extra shifts in order to accommodate workload and deadlines. Alumasc’s premium level of technical assistance involved the provision of full product mock-ups prior to manufacture and regular testing of the Skyline system throughout the construction process, to ensure compliance with the client’s requirements at all times.
