An old Edinburgh Woollen Mill store in Buxton was recently transformed into a bike shop to cater fro the needs of the avid cyclists in the local area. Peak ascent Cycles also specialises in bike servicing and repairs which in turn, results in dirt and moisture from threads of wheels being rolled into the shop on a daily basis. Recognising the necessity to stop dirt in its tracks and protect the shop's shiny interior floor coverings, Patrick Healy, the owner of Peak Ascent cycles had our Coral Duo entrance flooring system installed at the front door. In a green Bellagio colourway- which is new for 2021- the vibrant green shade matches the bike shop's brand colours perfectly and reflects its ethos of nature and the great outdoors. Indeed Coral Duo is proven to stop up to 95% of dirt and moisture from entering a building and can reduce cleaning time by up to 65%.

Located within easy distance of the University of Edinburgh, this six-storey development provides 52 studio apartments for the city’ vibrant student community.Designed by Yeoman McAllister, the stone clad building complements the existing architecture of the area, while the high-performance aluminium fenestration package from Senior Architectural Systems provides a modern and compliant solution.Senior’s thermally-efficient SPW600e aluminium windows, installed with Louvre Guards in front of the opening lights, have been used throughout, combining a robust and secure construction with slim frames to frame far-reaching views of the city and ensure effective levels of daylighting. Designed by Bond Bryan architects, the Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is a bold and ambitious restoration of four existing buildings to form a single cultural hub. The focal point is the restored frontage of a former Victorian school encased by Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain wall to form a stunning façade showcasing the exhibit, which looks even more dramatic when lit up at night. SF52 curtain walling was chosen for its slim sightlines, which allow extensive views of the building’s restored period features and its enhanced thermal performance which helps improve overall energy efficiency.

wedi Primo completes luxury in central London Hotel.The Apex Temple Court Hotel is a luxury 4 star hotel, just off Fleet Street central London. Full architectural and interior design was by Ian Springford Architects, Edinburgh.A key factor in the selection of the wedi shower units for each of the 184 bedrooms was the requirement to achieve a high performance quality waterproof bespoke solution capable of adapting to the on site conditions. Ian Springford Architects has specified wedi shower units since 2004 and Apex Temple Court is the fourth Apex hotel where they have been successfully installed. Bespoke pre-fabricated shower units - Fast installation. The key benefits of using wedi were that the Fundo shower design provided simple, fast adaption to the individual shower configurations on site, as well as the detail of enabling the units to extend under the shower door to promote drainage back into the shower area from water falling off the door when in use.Complete prefabricated shower units allow fast dry and accurate construction in ONE integrated product system rather than a combination of different individual manufacturer’s products creating the risk of potential failures between the different systems during assembly and installation. The finished result was a fast track installation of a factory prepared shower system capable of on-site adjustment, delivering a completely waterproof system backed by warranty.

The new office development for the New Gorbals Housing Association in Glasgow features a variety of aluminium fenestration solutions. Together these have helped create a light and airy workspace and an impressive centrepiece for the wider regeneration of the area.Located on Crown Street, the new commercial office building is complemented by a new civic piazza and has been designed by Page & Park Architects. Flexibility and adaptability were key focuses for the overall design, with the incorporation of daylighting and natural ventilation strategies to boost wellbeing, and large glazed facades to better connect the building with the local community.The welcoming main entrance has been created using Senior’s slimline and thermally-enhanced SF52 aluminium curtain wall system and SPW501 aluminium commercial doors. The fenestration package also includes Senior’s SPW600e aluminium windows which were used throughout. The ground floor glazing has been recessed to provide privacy to the internal work spaces whilst complementing the overall ‘open’ design of the scheme. In contrast, the first-floor glazing protrudes slightly to maximise views of the surrounding city. Senior’s products were fabricated and installed by Scottech for main contractor CCG.The office environment includes both large areas for group work and smaller, more private booths and is centred around a large timber-clad atrium. The use of internal and external glazed partitions and windows helps balance the space, providing links with both the other areas of the building and the outside. The fenestration package has also been designed to provide those using the building with multiple aspect views and daylighting, whilst avoiding overheating and glare from the summer sun. To further complement the overall façade design which features dark grey zinc cladding, and to boost the durability of the aluminium frames, the windows, doors and curtain wall systems were powder coated.

The brief of this project was to carry out a trial on a section of track (the Metropolitan Line) located close to Farringdon station to provide an elastic, permanent repair waterproofing solution which would not cause any detrimental effect to the structure nor the trains passing through it.

JD Gyms are a reputable company within the leisure industry. When they started to experience serious leakage problems across their estate (especially on mezzanine floors), they quickly realised that their existing shower construction does not live up to the standard of their service – and would need a reliable, guaranteed system solution.In order to allow for a straightforward and safe replacement of existing showers without the need to change the existing pipework, a grid platform constructed of 80mm XPS building boards was proposed . The showers then were fitted with XPS linear shower trays featuring dry-fit drain technology, 12.5mm XPS building boards on the walls and surrounding floor areas were sealed by proprietary sealing and decoupling membrane, all ready to tile after 24 hours. Up till now, 18 different sites have been completed and the shower system solution comes with one manufacturer’s guarantee on the whole installation. 

Skyliner Sports Centre, Bury St Edmonds

To update four pairs of manual swing doors at the health club in Wilmslow, which over time had become tired looking and cumbersome after years of wear and tear and replace them with automatic doors to create a welcoming, contact-free entrance for members and staff.

Renowned for its colourful, bold designs, JA!COCO! has transformed Beer52’s Edinburgh office into a glorious dynamic, flexible and bold space, highlighting the beauty of the Georgian townhouse it is situated in, whilst embodying the brand’s strong identity.As the world’s biggest beer subscription service, Beer52 wanted an office space that was colourful and playful – the crazier JA!COCO! went, the better! Taking inspiration from Roald Dahl and David Lynch, the office space now boasts grand, arched-entrance swing doors, beer taps on receptions and floor-to-ceiling custom window blinds – to name just a few. On the first floor, an eclectic zig zag flooring design has also been created, using Forbo’s Flotex Colour range in the Melon (a burned orange shade) and Crystal (a heather-like hue) colourways. In fact, the colourways influenced the colour scheme for the office space, with similar shades adorning the walls, ceilings and swing doors.JA!COCO! also chose to install Forbo’s Allura Click LVT planks in the Blond Timber colourway throughout the hallway and kitchen spaces, to complement the more ‘stripped back’ décor, which has an almost bar-like atmosphere.

Solihull’s Metropolitan Borough Council offices have been transformed with a major refurbishment. The upgrade to the Council’s Church Hill House and Orchard House buildings required alterations and extension works to provide new open-plan office space, a newly formed atrium, and new facades. Replacement of the existing old and rotten windows for new glazed units with high thermal and acoustic performance whilst maintaining the essential character of the buildings was essential. Kestrel Aluminium’s 60mm window system was chosen for the project because of its proven track record in this type of development.

The JV40Bis office building, located between Calle Josefa Valcárcel and Calle Telémaco in Madrid, features more than 8,700m² distributed across seven floors. Thanks to its architecture comprised of classic lines, this building by the architect Francisco Mangado provides a striking contrast to the glass facades of the adjacent office buildings.The main architectural goal was to create a healthy work environment, prioritizing the well-being of workers in terms of visual, thermal and acoustic comfort. This aim was achieved and the building was awarded LEED Platinum certification, issued by the U.S. Green Building Council. This certification classifies the project as a sustainable, energy-efficient construction with reduced emissions and a satisfactory indoor environment; in this case, this leads to comfortable workspaces.All this is, in part, thanks to the more than 700 Bandalux Premium Plus shades that guarantee optimal solar management given their minimum gap (space between the fabric and bracket). These technical shades integrate well with the restrained, timeless aesthetics of a large, diaphanous space that encompasses work zones, relaxation areas and leisure spaces in which the user adapts solar incidence to the requirements of any given moment.The Polyscreen® 550 fabric in White Linen can block up to 96% of sunlight and it provides the visual and thermal comfort necessary in the workspace. Its high energy performance leads to savings in terms of heating and air conditioning. Rekortan M (Re-Topping) and Polytan SMART at Willesden Sports Centre, LondonTHE POWER OF SPORTWillesden Sports Centre is a fitness, leisure and community centre in North London. In Willesden, a neighbourhood not far from the famous Wembley Stadium, there is an expansive sports complex that includes the whole of King Edward VII Park. The complex encompasses two swimming pools, a fitness studio, a sports hall with a 60-metre indoor track and four courts, as well as steam rooms and saunas. For outdoor sports, there is an athletics facility with six 400-metre lanes and an integrated sprinting track with two additional lanes, along with facilities for various jumping and throwing disciplines.All the lanes of the athletics track were renewed with Rekortan M in brick red in the course of a full renovation in 2022. The consistency of the Rekortan M tread strikes the perfect balance between excellent shock absorption and maximum acceleration – properties that are appreciated by both middle-distance and short-distance runners alike. All the running and run-up tracks were refurbished using the re-topping process. This means that used and worn synthetic surfaces are completely technically and cosmetically restored. Re-topping is not only an extremely economical and explicitly sustainable solution for the renovation of sports facilities. It also allows the existing elastic substructures to remain in place, rather than being disposed of.The athletics facility at Willesden Sports Centre was also fitted with two Polytan SMART systems for the precise measurement and documentation of training performance. On one of the running tracks and sprinting tracks, athletes can conduct agility tests, jumping tests, endurance tests and sprint tests. Multiple Polytan SMART timing gates are integrated in the lanes.The athletics facility at Willesden Sports Centre can be booked by schools and clubs. Among them are the Willesden Triathlon Club and, in particular, the Track Academy. At the latter, former international athletes, coaches, mentors and teachers are of the belief that sport and education have the power to change people’s lives for the better. Under the motto “The Power of Sport”, they support disadvantaged young people to realise their potential and develop in a positive way. This includes building their self-confidence, affirming their self-worth and helping them to find the courage to acquire new skills and to plan and shape their own future.Currently, almost 400 young athletes train at the Track Academy at Willesden Sports Centre every week. We share this belief in the social power of sport, especially for disadvantaged children and young people, and are proud to support the goals of the Track Academy with our surfaces and our Polytan SMART system.

Dana Petroleum is an oil and gas company and the project was to refurbish their UK offices in Aberdeen. The multiple floors in this office block required blinds coordinated to specific colour themes. Silent Gliss SG 4910 were specified - 233 blinds installed, some with a screen fabric, some with a blackout option. This was achieved by installing double systems with the blackout blind to the back of the window.

Laying ceramic tiles on flat roofs, terraces and podium decks has been made easier with the development of the Rail System, an integrated substructure system to increase stability of suspended tiles. The Rail System incorporates an adjustable height pedestal with a special clip head fitting, a specially profiled aluminium rail which clicks onto the headpiece without the need for mechanical fixings and a top headpiece which slides along the rail to hold and position the tile. By tying the pedestals together via the rail, there is far less risk of an individual pedestal moving or changing height, leading to far less risk of a tile rocking over time. This assures the integrity of the upper surface and gives a health and safety improvement to the area.The rail gives added structural stability as the weight is distributed laterally along the rails and not driven directly downwards onto the pedestal beneath. The top headpiece can be slid along the rail to fit to the corners of the tile above. This means the edge of the tile does not necessarily have to be directly above the pedestal, giving much greater flexibility for positioning.Consider the possibility of a drainage outlet or other awkward detail being directly beneath the edge of a surface tile. Instead of having to cut the tile back, simply move the pedestals away for the outlet and let the rail circumvent the hazard. Position the top head in the correct place to fit around the corner of the tile and the issue is addressed quickly, securely and easily. The rail system brings greater lateral stability to the tiled deck and is a faster, more efficient way to lay porcelain tiles and slabs. It is a major technical improvement to suspended tile and slab installations.

Bowcliffe Hall is a stately home now hosting large events. the Blackburn Wing is a 2000sq ft tree house conference and event venue shaped like an airplane wing and nestled in ancient woodland at the heart of the estate. The challenge for Silent Gliss was to specify and discreetly fit products to work perfectly on sloping ceilings with an open plan design objective. the solution was found using the Silent Gliss motorised roller blinds System 4960 and 4880.

Our purposeOn behalf of Amye Defence Services, Acclaim Contracts Ltd was commissioned to address the aging roof of the building, which was leaking despite receiving patch repairs over the past 20 years. The Ministry of Defence’s Project Allenby/Connaught demonstrates the Government’s commitment to maintaining defence estates.The £1.45bn scheme is a 35-year commitment to providing modern, high quality, fully serviced, purpose built living and working accommodation for 18,700 soldiers. It involves the new build and refurbishment of more than 550 buildings across Salisbury Plain and Aldershot, including upgrading Allenby’s Building 51, otherwise known as the Sports Pavilion.Our solutionAcclaim turned to Langley to provide all the material necessary to complete the work. After stripping the original roof to the existing plywood deck, the team fitted new treated timber around the perimeter and new uPVC fascia. The current edge trims, perimeter check kerbs, and extended flues were removed to ensure regulatory 150mm clearance was achieved once the new roof covering was installed. Langley’s HT180 attachment layer was loose-laid and nailed into place to provide appropriate protection to the timber deck while the “hot works” above were undertaken. Langley’s TA-20 Flat Roofing System was installed across the roof area, with insulation to achieve the regulatory requirement of 0.18W/m2K. SA-20 Flat Roofing Detailing System was used in fire risk areas, in line with Safe2Torch guidance. The range of Langley’s TA systems complies with Broof(t4) classification and has a Local Authority Building Control (LABC) assured accreditation. Under MOAT 31, Langley’s Parafor 30 GS (cap sheet to the TA system) achieves a ‘resistance to damage” rating of R4. It is independently certified by the BBA to deliver a life expectancy of at least 40 years, one of the longest available in the UK.Acclaim fitted Langley’s ParaFurb Refurbishment Outlets to upgrade the internal outlets where possible, cleaning and priming those where the design precluded the use of ParaFurb. We installed New Code 5 lead pipe sleeves to flues and hot pipes to a minimum 150mm above the waterproofing. In addition, Langley’s ParaTrim GRP Edge Trim was fitted to all the kerbs.“It carried great weight with us that Acclaim worked in partnership with Langley, who offers an independent insurance-backed guarantee. The £350 million Grange University Hospital is the centrepiece of a new model of healthcare delivery, which aims to transform health service delivery across Gwent. The new super hospital includes a 24-hour Emergency Department and assessment unit for major emergencies, resuscitation, and 370 critical care beds for those requiring onward intensive care.The hospital has been divided into two sectors over five levels, with care services at one side and treatment areas on the other. It has been designed to offer the highest quality patient environment, whilst being flexible, adaptable and expandable for changing needs. The hospital will be home to more than 40 specialist services. To attract and retain the best workforce, the building has been designed to offer a workplace which has high quality staff areas with a highly connected environment. Lusso were procured to supply and install all of the glazed partitions and glazed door sets throughout the hospital, including bespoke Lusso single and double-glazed systems designed specifically for healthcare installations. Due to the pandemic and the increased need for critical care services, the hospital was fast-tracked for completion a year early, whilst retaining the exacting standards expected of a high-profile project. 

Challenge: The structure was had severe structural degradation due to the ingress of moisture and water over its near 100-year life. Corrosion to the steelframe resulted in tensile forces cracking and moving the brick skin, also causing a cracked façade. Strategy: ICCP was used as a method to control corrosion whilst the cracking and movement were repaired. This involved LoCem® and +point® AACM anode mortar to be grouted in the bed joints, alongside embedded corrosion rate sensors for service life tracking (AchillesICP and AiMS). LoCem® is a low carbon cement alternative, that can also act as a cathodic protection anode. Outcome: The structure was restored to be used as high-value residential apartments, saving tonnes of embodied carbon and eliminated the option of demolition. The embedded system successfully controlled and monitored corrosion for the long term, adding an additional 100 years to the structure’s service life.

Designed by Chaplin Farrant The Nest is a new community sports facility funded by the charity partner of Norwich City football club, to help improve the health and well-being of local residents.The development includes an impressive refurbished clubhouse with changing rooms, physio room, event and conference spaces plus a café and IT suite. Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain wall and SPW600 aluminium windows have been used throughout the new building to give a light and airy feel. This open space and the surrounding linked buildings provide shared facilities including a gymnasium and dining hall. Constructed by main contractor and established supply chain partner, Morgan Sindall, the new modern school building benefits from several aluminium fenestration solutions from across Senior’s extensive range.The eye-catching main façade features Senior’s thermally-enhanced SF52 aluminium curtain wall system with integrated SPW501 aluminium commercial doors which provide safe and secure access. Coventry University Group’s £14m state-of-the-art campus in Scarborough was opened in September 2016. The building was designed to make sure that there was plenty of open and flexible space to give students both room to study and socialise. Facilities include a library, café, classrooms and open learning decks. The Head of Security at a prominent London University was faced with key security issues when the organisation took over the security of an old building. The large ground floor building led directly onto a public pavement and housed academic and research staff with valuable computer equipment. The Security Team needed to find a way of securing the building, especially the large windows, without replacing them entirely.Bernadette Duncan (MBE) Chief Operating Officer of AUCSO explained the options they looked into:“We considered installing bars on the windows but did not want the building to look like a jail block or draw attention to it. The staff were also concerned about the sunlight on the south facing side of the building, so we would also need to install blinds. The delivery and installation timings were agreed and everything was fitted in time for the building to be occupied. The blinds gave the staff the required feeling of privacy and security, without feeling barred in. Four rooms affected by noise and dust ingress in the Grade II Listed Harris Manchester College, part of Oxford University had thermal secondary glazing installed by Selectaglaze to lower noise breakthrough and to make the buildings more energy efficient. Selectaglaze installed secondary glazing to 28 windows. A number of products were combined for the specification, including Series 20 slimline vertical units. Series 10 horizontal sliding units were used in conjunction with Series 42 fixed lights and Series 42 curved fixed lights for large gothic arched windows. The College has created a more comfortable environment for all users of its spaces.

After nearly 30 years without refurbishment, the Paediatrics department at Ormskirk District General Hospital required a new lease of life to be injected into the building. With hospitals in operation around the clock by patients, visitors and staff, it was vital that the new flooring solution offered a combination of optimal performance benefits, whilst being quick and easy to install to minimise both disruption and downtime. The new sixth form college located at the site of the city’s former Masonic Hall has been sympathetically restored and extended to provide a number of new facilities, whilst maintaining the building’s architectural grandeur. The construction materials for the new build elements were carefully specified to both complement and enhance the existing Italianate Villa style.
