Bell Phillips Architects choose Vandersanden bricks for colour, texture and contrast at Orwell House

Vandersanden Brick

For its architecturally striking Orwell House scheme in Bethnal Green, London, Bell Phillips Architects (BPA) has specified hand-formed, multi-coloured Antro bricks from Vandersanden, the brick maker renowned for its innovation, craftsmanship and sustainable manufacturing practices. Antro provides just the right balance of colour, texture and contrast for this affordable housing project, designed by BPA for London Borough of Tower Hamlets and forming part of the Berthold Lubetkin-designed Dorset Estate, originally constructed in the 1950’s and 1960’s.Comprising 20 flats in total, Orwell House is a new, wedge-shape, in-fill development, just off Colombia Road, to the North-West of the Borough. BPA’s imaginative design for this six-storey building features balconies and a roof terrace that look out across Ravenscroft Park with the steel-framed volume of Orwell House contained by Vandersanden’s multi-coloured greyish brick envelope. On the two shorter sides, this brick envelope is fronted by balconies clad in pink, glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) panels. This bold chequerboard patterning echoes the tones and patterns used by Lubetkin to animate facades on buildings across the existing estate.Completed in July 2020, Orwell House is a Finalist in the Housing Awards 2021. To find out more about the bricks used in this project or to see the wide range of high-quality bricks available from Vandersanden, click on the 'View more' link

Castle Composites

Our client wanted a low maintenance but high quality finish for the balconies on a build of high end flats and penthouses.Castlewood composite decking was chosen as it provides good slip resistance and a very luxurious finish. Our composite decking is very low maintenance due to the unique polymer cap that is applied to the decking boards during production. This particular deck board is supplied with a 25 year limited warranty for domestic applications and a 10 year limited warranty for commercial applications. Terms and conditions apply. Our aluminium substructure system was chosen as it is quick and easy to install and will never rot like traditional timber joists. The balconies also had very low thresholds in some areas that could not have been overcome with traditional timber joists. The aluminium substructure was assembled in frames with joists running at 400mm apart to provide adequate support for the composite boards. Additional joists were also installed to support the ends of each decking board where two ends meet. Each aluminium frame was then laid on our DD adjustable pedestals to make them completely level. Decking boards were then secured to the aluminium with our unique fasteners that work with our boards and aluminium profiles. If you have a project that may require this system please get in touch with your dimensions and we will happily provide a quotation for everything required.

Kings Crescent Estate

Kings Crescent Estate

Schöck Ltd

Kings Crescent Estate, in Stoke Newington, North London is undergoing an ambitious five-year redevelopment project as part of the London Borough of Hackney's wider Estate Regeneration programme. Three new buildings between five and twelve storeys high are under construction, with a number of the existing estate buildings, dating from the 1960s and 1970s, being retained and refurbished to provide continuity and transition. The plan is to recreate a neighbourhood of high quality housing and pleasant tree-lined streets that sits comfortably with the surrounding Victorian townscape of terraced and semi-detached housing close to Clissold Park. There are solar panels, green and brown roofing, plus a combined heat and power plant. These are expected to achieve savings of 25 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions that would otherwise have been generated by the development. The residential element of the scheme will result in up to 765 new homes, intended to offer at least a one-for-one replacement for the present amount of housing on the site. Half the homes will be affordable, with the remainder aimed at the private market. It is claimed to be the only scheme in London to combine new build construction of council homes with the refurbishment of existing council stock. As you would expect there are a significant number of balconies throughout the development and this means the risk of thermal bridging at the many cantilever balcony connections. To counter any such risk, the design incorporates two types of structural break units from the extensive Schöck Isokorb® range.

Agar Grove

Schöck Ltd

Claimed to be the largest Passivhaus development to date in the UK and certainly Camden Council’s largest community investment project, Agar Grove Estate, in North West London, is undergoing a six-phase major regeneration due for completion in 2025. The mixed-tenure scheme will provide 493 new homes to help meet Camden's housing needs. There will be a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom homes, with full width balconies on the upper floors. By meeting Passivhaus standard the development will also achieve the highest levels of sustainability and energy efficiency. However, a critical element in any design process involving efficient thermal insulation is the avoidance of thermal bridging. With the Agar Grove development the risk of thermal bridging is primarily at the connectivity points involving balconies and parapets. One of the most technically advanced countermeasures is the Isokorb® range of structural thermal breaks from Schöck. A major reason for the superior performance of this product type is the thickness of the insulation body, increased from the standard 80mm thick to 120mm. High quality stainless steel bars with improved tensile strength are also an integral part of the unit. With parapets, the conventional method is to wrap the perimeter of the wall with an insulation barrier. However, the Schöck Isokorb® used here offers a solution that is more cost-effective and more thermally efficient than wrapped parapets. Its 120mm insulation thickness results in low psi-values and therefore significantly reduces heat loss.

Morris Blitz CourtBauder LiquiTEC cold applied liquid waterproofing systemSynopsisMorris Blitz Court is a residential housing estate in Hackney that has undergone an extensive amount of refurbishment works as part of the Decent Homes Programme. Included within the approved scheme was the renovation of all of the building’s balconies and walkways, as well as the transformation of the 1,000m2 concrete podium deck located above the car park into an aesthetically pleasing social space.Bauder Building BoardProject:Morris Blitz CourtLocation:HackneyRoof Area:1,400m²Specifier:Mansell Construction ServicesApproved Contractor:Armour GroupThe specificationVarious waterproofing options were explored by the client, however, it was decided that the Bauder cold applied liquid systems would be the optimal solution given all the requirements.Project challengesOne of the major challenges for this project was the low door thresholds connecting to the podium deck, which couldn’t be raised, meaning that the build-up for the majority of the cold applied waterproofing and landscaping elements would need to be less than 100mm in height. Because of these restrictions the only drainage and protection board suitable within the system was Bauder’s Versicell 20, which is just 20mm in height but can withstand extremely high loading. The surface of the deck consists of three distinct finishes; permeable paving on the ground floor patios and walkways, artificial turf featuring fibreglass planters to serve as a communal garden and rubber mulch to create a play area for children.Balconies and communal walkways were waterproofed with Bauder’s cold applied reinforced waterproofing layer; which is extremely fast curing and can withstand foot traffic within an hour of being installed. Residents remained in situ throughout the installation so working hours were scheduled to accommodate for school hours. Despite the challenges encountered all works were completed on time and to budget. Products appliedBauder LiquiTEC SystemA cold applied liquid waterproofing system that offers the maximum versatility in roofing. A contractor client was working on a retro-fit balcony and flat roof project in Brighton. The waterproofing membrane had tapered insulation placed on top and the contractor discovered ballasting the insulation was needed, only once on the roof. The door thresholds were too tight for a traditional decking system with joists. Wallbarn advised for paving slabs on 9mm rubber pads; then 30mm thick ipe timber tiles mounted onto Adjustable Pedestals. The buildup was under 100mm and the overall finish of the tropical hardwood was glorious. The architect was relieved that we could produce a solution, the client was delighted.

Natural beauty, easy to maintain and sustainable quality– UPM ProFi Piazza, Californian Oak

UPM Biocomposites

Natural beauty, easy to maintain and sustainable quality were the key factors for one family’s decking choice – UPM ProFi Piazza, Californian OakSaija and Petri Nylund and their two grown up children were already experienced home builders. As their family situation and needs have changed, they decided to build a new home. Once again they planned a turn-key solution: this time a stylish and modern white house built for them by the contractor Hevi-kivitalot as part of 2020’s Tuusula Housing Fair.Their brief for the design of both exterior and interior living areas of the house was very clear: they wanted to have high quality, ageless materials, with a hint of everyday luxury. Colours should be natural and neutral. The internal and external living areas should be seamlessly joined together. There are three different balconies or outdoor deckings, each with a different function. One balcony opens out from the master bedroom. The second balcony, a rooftop terrace with an outdoor jacuzzi, lies next to the sauna and bathroom. The third and main decking area opens out directly from the kitchen and living room and features a partly glazed area with a dining table. Natural light floods into this perfect merging of the indoor and outdoor living areas. The interior of the house was created by the interior designer Laura Seppänen, who also found the decking material, UPM ProFi Piazza in Californian Oak colour. “We immediately liked the natural look of this material, with its modern woodgrain design and texture. The neutral “Californian Oak” colour also matched well with the pure white colour of the house and the other colour choices we have made elsewhere in our new home.” explained Petri Nylund, father of the family. “I especially appreciate that it is very easy to clean and maintain – only periodically washing is needed”, said his wife Saija Nylund. “It also feels comfortable and safe with bare feet. An additional advantage is that it’s made with a high recycled content – we prefer to choose materials which are also environmentally friendly”, she continues. “In general, we are very pleased with our new home and also all of the outdoor areas”, the couple says together. This summer, the whole Nylund family are enjoying their first summer in their new home, especially the long sunny days and warm evenings in their extended outdoor living room, made with UPM ProFi Piazza decking.
