The new office building is groundbreaking in terms of its holistic approach in Denmark. Lindner provided a complete interior fit-out solution consisting of ceiling systems, floor systems and partition systems. Rounded off with balcony and partition cladding, Lindner created an ideal combination of design and function for the building´s interior.

Superb development with inset balconies and beautiful roof terraces.This prestige development by the riverside in Manchester used the MyDek Vista board on our standard box rail and cleat support system. Renaker and their subcontractor were a pleasure to work with and were keen to ensure that they delivered a first class product and installation to complement the quality of the development.

The Olympic Village consists of 11 blocks, each block comprising between six and eight individual buildings, which are eight to twelve storeys high. Of the many amenities in the Village, by far the largest usage is for apartments, of which there are around 3000 units.Despite the height and density of the scheme, it has a surprisingly open feel, aided by the glazed winter gardens and mostly generous sized balconies, which are very much in evidence throughout the entire development. There was a huge demand here for the Schöck Isokorb®, with around 10,000 thermally broken structural connections to be considered. For podium slabs and pre-cast balcony applications the Isokorb® T type K, for concrete-to-concrete connectivity was used. The T type S, T type Q-P and Schöck SLD dowels combined to meet the requirement for securing the winter garden balconies. Types SK-MM1 and SK-MM2 for steel-to-concrete, provided the solution for connecting the various concrete frames to steel balconies.Some of the steel balconies had a cantilever length of approximately two metres and in most cases SK-MM2 units offered the ideal solution. However, in certain locations – concrete edge beams for example – the reinforcement bars had to be shaped to suit and for these applications special SK-MM1 modules were utilised.The unusual T-shaped winter gardens provided one of the greater challenges. Remarkably, the winter garden concrete slabs are designed to span two building blocks – approximately seven metres – and it was essential to allow for movement of the slabs by combining the Isokorb® T type Q-P at one end and SLD dowels at the other.Exceptionally strong steel-to-concrete thermal break connections were required and usually the Isokorb® T type SK would be the natural choice. On this occasion however, the forces involved exceeded even the capabilities of the SK units and it was necessary to design a T type S configuration, in combination with a specially developed steel bracket. Back at ground and first floor levels a huge number of T type K concrete-to-concrete thermal breaks were required for the large slab sections. In some cases the extreme dimensions of the slab sections resulted in thermal movement beyond the Isokorb®'s capability and SLD dowels were used in their place.

AliDeck is extremely pleased to have such great feedback from first-time customer N.S Engineering, who recently completed work on the Macquarie Quay remediation project in Eastbourne, East Sussex, following a recommendation from a recent EWS1 survey that specified non-combustible materials should be used when renewing the balcony decking.

Knolly’s House, a residential block of flats in London, required refurbishment works to the internal communal walkways and concrete stairwells as the existing waterproofing had reached the end of its serviceable life. The waterproofing needed to be fast cure as the communal balconies were the only access to the flats. Therefore, Proteus Waterproofing specified Pro-BW® Plus system.

This incredible design, that uses EQUITONE [natura], features hidden shutters to windows and Juliet balconies for the residents of this 10 story student accommodation to enjoy. The random opening of the shutters gives the building a new appearance daily, as the dark grey of EQUITONE [natura] in Anthracite [N251] works perfectly to maximise the effect of the exposed orange metal framing that lies beneath.

Part of the regeneration of Chatham Docks, Chatham Waters comprises of two blocks of 193 PRS apartments linked by a single-storey podium level.Y2206F Steel Bronze 1 and Steel Bronze 2 Y2217F applied to solid and perforated cladding panels, whilst YW387I Ordos Sable adorns both balconies and window frames and screens.

We provided 260m² of our Hyperion non-combustible aluminium 145 Pro-Grip Decking for Acton Gardens Phase 9.2. Acton Gardens is the regeneration of the former South Acton Estate - this particular phase consisted of a 15 storey structure, totalling 203 units. This project demonstrated an amazing approach to mindful practise through fantastic external appearances and brilliant work with the local community. The assurances made in terms of the environment, safety, and personnel were outstanding.Our client sought a dependable and contemporary non-combustible aluminium decking for their residential balconies. The hidden fastener system used in conjunction with Hyperion 145 Pro-Grip provided a robust flooring solution with a crisp finish that could easily be installed on aluminium joists. St Clement’s Heights is part of a private housing and supported living project at Sydenham Hill. The development’s collection of 26 apartments and 20 townhouses exhibit impressive architectural elements.Situated at one of the highest points in London, Crest Nicholson incorporated balcony openings into the townhouse design. IG Lintels designed and manufactured a number of large apex lintels to accommodate impressive glazed openings, which provide access to the private balcony.Challenge:The large glazed apex openings provide a rich source of natural light to the second floor master bedrooms helping to create a bright and comfortable living space. The 4048mm openings accommodated glazed sliding doors leading out onto the balcony, where residents can enjoy beautiful views across the city landscape in the distance.IG’s engineers designed a bespoke steel lintel solution to achieve unique architectural features. The Sydenham Hill development required three heavy duty special lintels to accommodate the scale of the second floor openings.Solution:IG designed a bespoke lintel solution to suit the 4048mm span opening and replicated it for each of the three identical openings featured throughout the second floor of the development. The galvanised steel lintel solution accommodated the 2024mm high apex detail, considering the location of the ridge beam to avoid any clash.The end bearings of the lintel were increased to 225mm to help better distribute the loading applied. Additionally, the design incorporated a stiffening plate on the inner leaf to further ensure the structural integrity of the lintel once built-in.

The ChallengeA residential development exclusively for the over 55’s, Quantock House in Taunton, Somerset features a series of contemporary one and two-bedroom apartments set over the eight-storey building. The latest development from Platinum Skies, part of the Affordable Housing and Healthcare Group (AHH), Quantock House includes a bistro, bar, activity room and private, landscaped gardens. Designed with comfort and luxury in mind, each apartment features a modern glass balcony offering stunning views over the surrounding hills.Appointed by AHH, AMI was tasked with developing a fire-rated glass balustrade solution. Working closely with Pyroguard’s technical team, this collaboration resulted in the development of AMI’s Fire-Tek Balustrade system, featuring Pyroguard Balustrade fire safety glass. The system, fully backed by site specific structural calculations, is compliant with all the latest building regulation requirements for residential buildings over 18 metres tall (11 metres in Scotland).The SolutionDesigned specifically for balcony and balustrade applications and suitable for installation on buildings over 18-metres high (the first of its kind and patent pending), Pyroguard Balustrade is a toughened fire safety glass, manufactured to classification A2-s1. In addition to its fire reaction qualities, Pyroguard Balustrade also offers excellent light transmission and is certified to the 1B1 impact resistance rating (according to EN12600) – both key factors for the application.Quantock House is one of the first UK projects to have an NHBC accepted A2-s1 glass balustrade system installed on its apartment balconies – the result of a close working partnership between fire safety glass manufacturer Pyroguard and Architectural Metalwork Installations Limited (AMI), the architectural metalwork specialist.

Mono M310/M311 Glass InfillSt George’s junior school is an independent Roman Catholic school with a high standard of facilities. Construction of ‘The Ark’ provided a new early years teaching block, which includes modern classrooms, a dedicated IT suite, a new assembly room and outdoor learning areas. The two-storey building has a staircase at each end and Delta Balustrades’ Mono™ system was specified with powder-coated steel balusters and 11.5mm toughened and laminated glass infill panels. The Mono™ system handrails were provided in oak to offer a warmer finish in the primary school environment and each staircase features a dual handrail with one handrail mounted at a 600mm height for the children and the other in parallel at 900mm for the teachers. The Ark features an outdoor teaching area at first floor level with a balcony accessed from the internal classrooms. Once again, Delta Balustrades’ Mono™ system was specified with powder coated balusters to match the grey of the window casings. The 11.5mm toughened and laminated glass infill panels have no handrails but have been installed at a height of 1500mm to provide additional edge protection. A further small triangular balcony at the side of the building has been specified with the same system as the main first floor balcony. At ground level, the building features steps and ramps and a combination of Mono™ balusters and Orbis™ handrails with a Sigma stainless steel finish have been used to provide guarding, with 10mm toughened glass infill panels.Finally, the stone steps leading to the nursery classrooms were specified with an Orbis™ handrail.

These comfortable apartments are aimed at older people who desire living independently, but with customised assistance always within reach.

Bayside Apartments is a stunning new development on Worthing's seafront. With a resident's lounge, communal courtyard space and spa, Bayside truly makes the most of its incredible seafront home. Taking inspiration from the coast, 'Bayside Vista' - the 15 storey structure is enveloped in swooping balconies with wood-grain tile, supported by Ryno RPF Fixed-Head Paving Support Pedestals.

This group of seafront apartments on the site of the former Bournemouth International Hotel is perched right on the cliff side. The modern aesthetic of white render and glazed balconies is offset with crisp elZinc zinc cladding supplied by SIG Zinc & Copper and installed by the specialist cladding team at ICEE. The project for Taylor Wimpey Southern Counties was designed post-planning and managed on site by architects WADP.

The balconies at the Southsea development were targeted for an extensive overhaul, incorporating AliDeck’s Senior Board in Textured Silver Grey alongside the AliClad Flow soffit cladding system, complete with an Extended Gutter. Leading the project as the main contractor, McCarthy & Stone launched a significant six-phase renovation, with Amson Solutions delivering the installation across Phase 1 for our client, Cox Design.

The Glass Yard is a prestigious mixed office and retail development in Chesterfield, on the site of what was the once the largest manufacturer of domestic glassware in the UK. It has been designed sustainably and ergonomically by developer Blue Deer Ltd. for an open plan, daylight filled environment. The client approached Tarmac’s representatives looking for a safe, practical, durable and visually distinctive finish for the main external walkways and first-floor balconies that would complement the modern design and sustainable ethos of the building. After providing advice and number of samples, the client chose TOPTINT Glow a unique, glow in the dark decorative concrete that uses light sensitive chippings to help illuminate areas such as footpaths, cycleways and pedestrian areas. The glowing aggregate provided a passive and energy efficient form of demarcation to help guide clients along the balconies and walkways at night-time and in low ambient light conditions. This fitted with the building’s sustainable design ethos. The gentle glow provided by the light emitting chippings also provided an ambience that was sure to be a talking point for customers and would help put the new development on the map.

A large commercial client of EnviroBuild required a contemporary and low maintenance decking solution for their purpose built flat refurbishment project in South London. The decking would be supported over a flat roof surface, plug on balconies and garden decking areas, so required a versatile decking bearing system.The SolutionThe project used 400 m² of Hyperion Granite Pioneer decking installed on a sub-frame made of non-rot Manticore recycled plastic lumber. To support the decking over the low profile balconies and taller flat roof sections, adjustable decking supports were used. The various sizes of pedestals, allowed both very shallow decking heights and other sections to be supported securely with minimal installation time.Customer FeedbackThe client loved the look of the Granite Pioneer decking against the classic redbrick building. The Gasholders’ architecture is anything but ordinary – 149 distinctive canalside apartments and penthouses, built within a refurbished triplet of Grade II listed, cast iron gas-holder guide frames at the heart of King’s Cross, London. Alfresco Floors supplied and installed 20mm Astor porcelain pavers across the 149 private balconies, all with views across the capital and within the radial walkway area of the project.

With Via 57 West, Bjarke Ingels and his firm BIG created a magnificent architectural statement on the Hudson River’s Manhattan shore, built upon a philosophy of equal light and balconies for all apartments, and a shared community courtyard.The building, which won the International Highrise Award in 2016, harnesses both New York’s vibrancy and the tranquillity of nature, becoming an oasis within the never-sleeping city.

Looking as though it were poised to take flight, the Blackburn Wing is a multi-award-winning venue. Glass balustrades on the balconies and runways – created by Q-railing – together with floor-to-ceiling curtain walls allow for stunning unobstructed views of the surrounding woodland. In total, 140 metres of stand-off balustrade were installed, with Easy Glass MOD 0763 glass adapters and stainless steel cap rails.

BCM supplied these striking GRC ‘picture surrounds’ to the balconies of a residential development now known as Orwell House, on Baroness Road in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.The chequerboard pattern of the surrounds echoes the design of the blocks of the original estate, but their terracotta colour provides the new block with a radical, modern façade. The surrounds were expertly installed by BCM's partner installer, Henley Stone, who completed their installation in early 2020.

Mitie selected TRC to conduct surveys, removals, manufacturing, and installation of more than 600 traditional double-glazed box sash windows in this delightful housing estate, originally designed by George Godwin in 1885.Located in the heart of Chelsea and offering easy access to both Fulham Road and Kings Road, Elm Park Gardens comprises multiple blocks.TRC embarked on the demanding task of surveying the existing windows and balcony doors, obtaining precise manufacturing measurements from within the flats, all without the need for external scaffolding. They maintained a close collaboration with the primary contractor and coordinated appointments with residents over a span of six months.Working within occupied flats, TRC ensured that residents’ expectations were met with cleanliness, protection, and politeness while installing the new bespoke timber windows and balcony doors.The projectThe comprehensive window replacement project covered the following aspects:The new traditional box sash windows were meticulously matched with the original style and proportions, including shape, glazing bar size and placement, overall glazing patterns, opening methods, materials, and finishes.

Coopers installed and commissioned two FireMaster® Plus fire curtains, the first to protect the property from fire and smoke migrating from the kitchen whilst the second to protect the internal balcony from smoke and fire travelling between floors. Both fire curtains provide 2 hours fire and insulation zone protection and were installed into the ceiling to remain hidden from view until deployed by a fire alarm.

“Bosco Verticale” by Stefan Boeri.The vertical forest - that's what the 119 and 87 meter high apartment towers in Milan's new city are called and have been an example of ecological building since their completion. The reason: The two buildings are surrounded by overhanging balconies that provide a home for 730 trees and 20,000 other plants. A “stacked park landscape” above the roofs of the city, green and emitting CO2 . Built with RETANOL® screed.

These intriguing high-quality apartments in Vienna, stand out dramatically from neighbouring blocks – and not just because of their blue, orange, yellow and turquoise finish. The large protruding cantilever balconies are a major feature, made possible by incorporating Schöck Isokorb® T thermal break modules throughout. Their outstanding thermal insulation properties dramatically reducing any thermal energy loss, they also transfer load and maintain full structural integrity.

The Canaletto residential tower at 257 City Road in London is located halfway between Old Street and Angel Stations in Islington, alongside the regenerated City Road Basin. It comprises a 31-storey tower with 190 luxury one, two and three bedroom apartments built to the standards of Code 4 Sustainable Homes Level 4.The tower is concrete frame and has a curving facade of metal and glass that breaks the volume into a series of three-to-four storey clusters. In turn, each cluster contains grouped balcony terraces, which are a striking feature of the building. The balconies are of steel construction connected to the concrete frame and as always with cantilever construction elements of this nature, one of the early design considerations had to be the prevention of thermal bridging.For the high specification Canaletto project the Schöck Isokorb® T type SK offers the ideal solution. It is a concrete-to-steel connectivity module that sits between the outer and inner structural connection points and blocks the outflow of heat through the use of high quality polystyrene insulation foam. The Isokorb® T type SK provides a clean and unobtrusive connection detail, minimises on-site assembly time and enables a high level of prefabrication.

High-rise riverside apartment building refurbishmentLocated on the banks of the River Thames, Ocean Wharf is a high-rise apartment building that can be subject to salt-water spray during high tide and windy days. Timber decking had previously been fitted on the balconies and had started to deteriorate, as well as being identified as a fire risk by the Fire Risk Assessor.A high-quality decking system was required to replace the existing balcony decking. The chosen solution needed to have a premium look and feel in line with the luxury standard of the development. Luxura, being A1 fire-rated and resistant to salt which could have affected other types of decking, was the ideal choice for this project.As the installer hadn’t installed non-combustible decking before, they required some on-site support from our team who were able to provide a toolbox talk and check ongoing progress. This resulted in a fantastic end result with the installation completed to a very high standard.“The material was completely new to us, so we were a bit hesitant at first. Neaco supplied a bespoke specification combining a railed Juliet balcony design with its contemporary glass balustrade to meet the aesthetic requirements of The Pembroke, a prestigious development of luxury apartments in Sevenoaks, Kent. Designed by BHD Architects, the project formed part of an extensive redevelopment of a site at the junction with London Road and Pembroke Road, and included the construction of a new apartment complex comprising 22 properties with parking at basement level. The scheme was designed to fit into the established pattern of development of the surrounding area, in terms of scale and appearance.

Battersea Reach, an award-winning development consists of 1,350 apartments spread over 14 separate buildings surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens, shops and cafes. Buzon UK supplied and installed the DPH pedestal range for the composite decking and paving to many of the terraces and balconies across the 14 separate apartment buildings. The DPH pedestal system is perfect for use at roof level as they allow for 5% slope correction and can accommodate a range of services beneath floor level as well as giving excellent drainage.

Stepnell Ltd selected Orbis balustrades with glass infill to fulfil the vision of a luxury retirement living community at the £29m Brio Retirement Living project, Beechwood Park.Designed with a wide range of community facilities and communal areas, Delta supplied over 600m of balustrades for the balconies and stairs.The project has since been awarded the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) “Very Good” standard rating and BRE HQM (Home Quality Mark) Level 3.

Designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen and opened in 1999, the Black Diamond is an extension to the Royal Library in Copenhagen that doubles its size. Its exterior of two glossy black cubes slightly tilted over its harbour-front walkway, reflect the sky above and the sea before it.This glass-and-black-marble structure, which changed the face of the city’s harbour, features a stunning eight-story atrium, whose undulating walls and balconies echo the ebb and flow of the harbour’s waterway.
