The saving on solid timber was a driving force in the decision process. Certified FSC and A2 FR were also important considerations when compared to sold timber. Happy New Service Building was designed by the Architectural Bureau.The Municipality new service building has been designed with a creative understanding which explores an interior that maximises the room use. Therefore, the space has an uplifting positivity to the vertical design.Project RequirementsThe building planning consent required ‘green building’ credentials. Furthermore, BREEAM-BESPOKE criteria were used in this project and BRE-GLOBAL prepared tailor-made criteria directly to the specific building type.Turkey’s first BREEAM certified building will be public; this project is expected to bring a lot of innovation including environmental sensitivity. Thus, it is foreseen that similar criteria will be applied in the future construction in the development region.Further, the main features of this project are a passive air conditioning system and natural lighting, double wall and gallery, economical water usage, recyclability of the material where possible. The enviro-friendly green roof and environment considerate plant preferences.Technowood satisfied all build requirements, the planning was especially happy with the aesthetics of such a diverse material. Invisibly fixed vertical columns solved the solution of the curved nature of the design; as well as the speed of installation which made the use of this wood finished product even more cost effective.Technowood is environmentally friendly, efficient to fit, FSC, A2 FR. Aberystwyth Arts Centre - F. Ball Raises the Level at Aberystwyth University

Technical representatives from F. Ball have provided flooring with a cost-effective alternative to completely removing and replacing a weakened screed as part of a flooring refurbishment at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University. Upon removing old floorcoverings, flooring contractors were faced with an extremely rough screed with weak patches, possibly the result of poor installation or curing techniques, environmental factors or age, that was unsuitable for the application of subfloor preparation products and the installation of floorcoverings. Some weak sections were mechanically removed, leaving about 75mm thickness to be made up. A structural engineer confirmed that the concrete bases were, otherwise, structurally sound. New P5 chipboard was affixed to the wood subfloors with screws and glued at the joins. It is often necessary to completely remove and replace a weakened screed. However, F. Ball technical representatives called upon to conduct a site assessment were able to recommend a less costly and time-consuming solution to make the surface suitable to receive floorcoverings, including quickly raising the level of floors where sections had been mechanically prepared. Firstly, any remaining weak spots in the base would need to be removed by mechanical means along with any surface contaminants to create a clean, sound micro-textured finish. Any dust and debris should also be swept away. Moisture tests indicated subfloor relative humidity (RH) levels in the concrete subfloors were as high as 78%, meaning a moisture management solution would be required. Contractors therefore applied a single coat of Stopgap F77 solvent-free epoxy waterproof surface membrane over the entire area to obtain a continuous barrier against subfloor moisture. Flooring contractors then used Stopgap 600 Base deep section levelling compound to raise the level of floors where weak patches of screed had been removed. It was also recommended that the chipboard over the raised access floors was checked to ensure that the surface was clean, secure and undamaged before applying a minimum thickness of 0.2mm of Stopgap Fill and Prime over the entire area. The whole subfloor area was then capped with a layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro high performance levelling compound to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of new floorcoverings. The final phase of the refurbishment was to install Nora rubber sheet floorcoverings using Styccobond F48 PLUS.

The Hive is a new creativity & innovation hub, built alongside the existing structures of Headington School and designed to ensure that creative thinking is established as the heart of a Headington Students education.Designed by LSH Architects, the 23,000 sq. ft building consists of sculpture studios, kiln room, photographic facilities, textile studios and 3 artist studios, with media editing suites and a Cinemax screening room also being included. Other facilities specifically suited to a range of creative outputs have been carefully and cleverly built into the project. To enable a sense of openness, high ceilings are used throughout the buildings and the gallery space is further enhanced to allow vast columns of light to permeate the area.Michelmersh’s Hampshire Red Stock Multi ATR was supplied via EH Smith and helped settle the building into the verdant, green backdrop and give the building a warm, comforting feel, as well as allowing the building to fit snugly within the landscape created by the surrounding buildings.

The appearance of the installation fully achieved the original design vision”.
Brooking steel windows chosen for Hampstead Garden Suburb home

Hampstead Garden Suburb, in north London, is internationally recognised as one of the finest examples of early twentieth century domestic architecture and town planning. It was designated as a Conservation Area in 1968, and the older part of the Suburb was designated a ‘Conservation Area of Outstanding Architectural or Historic Interest’ in 1977.Clement developed the Brooking range of steel windows as sensitive replacements for existing fenestration in the Suburb. The new windows look incredibly similar to the original windows and doors, but offer much improved specification. The owner of this wonderful, detached red brick home chose Clement to manufacture and install the new bespoke steel doors and windows. Our coatings look after the world’s most iconic and acclaimed buildings. Among them is the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Since its redevelopment in 2011, the principal public gallery in Auckland, New Zealand has won 23 awards and counting, including the prestigious World Architecture Festival's 2013 World Building of the Year. The redevelopment plan aimed at restoring and preserving heritage elements and sensitively combining them with 21st-century design. This included earthquake-proofing and heritage restoration of the 1887 and 1916 components of the main building and the addition of new, contemporary elements that increased display space by 50 per cent. One of the most distinctive features of the new building is its roof design, which forms a series of fine ‘tree-like’ canopies that define and cover the forecourt, atrium and gallery areas.Our coatings complemented this architectural challenge of blending old with new. A coatings system comprising of Interzinc 42, Intergard 251 and Interthane 990 was used to protect structural steel, while Interchar 963 was used to provide essential protection from the effects of fire.

A great example of 1930s Art Deco architecture, The Douglas Building sits on Great Titchfield Street in London’s West End. Formerly known as The Media Village, Douglas House was acquired by serviced office providers The Office Group (TOG) from landlords The Langham Estate in 2019. TOG together with Note Design Studio transformed the building with a colourful concept that blends the distinctive 1930s features and gives a sense of fluidity, openness and light throughout.As its former name suggests this area of London is a hub for local media and IT businesses operating out of the West End and the brief for the building was to create a flexible workspace where people can feel stimulated by their environment leading to greater productivity. Wellness was also a central focus and the building includes an oxygen room, a parents’ room and a roof terrace which are all integral to enabling and inspiring everyone who enters.Well ventilated and an abundance of natural light have become buzzwords in the COVID era and the more than 300 new steel windows from the Clement EB24 range which were chosen by office fit out and refurbishment contractors Parkeray perfectly facilitate both. Polyester powder coated in Pure White and furnished with Warren handles in a satin chrome finish the windows lend the building a contemporary look on the outside as well as supporting the 21st century ways of working inside.Peter Clement, Chief Executive of Clement Windows Group, commented:“As with all prestigious window replacement projects of this magnitude Clement took part in a competitive tender process. London Fire Stations choose Jacksons in state-of-the-art refurbishment

A consortium led by construction group Kier, along with BDP architects, was given the contract following a detailed procurement process. Jacksons were specified to supply access gates for eight of the stations undergoing refurbishment.

ASF were approached by artists Lucy Strachan and Fred Baier who had produced conceptual drawings of laser cut tree grilles. Alongside these drawings was a brief that the guards should fit with invisible fixings into the ASF 303 cast iron tree grille. ASF took these concepts forward and produced a set of tree guards that met the needs of both the artistic concept and the required practical applications. The guards were first laser profiled and then rolled to the desired diameter. The guard halves then had to be hand fettled and blended so the pattern carried perfectly through 360 degrees.

LAMILUX designed, supplied and installed both the supporting steelwork and atrium glazing to illuminate the central zone of the venue with natural daylight. Structural calculations were generated to ensure that the steelwork, which was assembled from five sections, could withhold the weight of the high spec glazing used. 76 fixed panes, walkable for maintenance and weighing 65kg per m², create the 20m x 9m wide unusual curved glass roof with wall abutment detail. 3 anchor points, which forms part of the rooflight system, were installed so that maintenance personnel are able to fix their safety harnesses onto the anchor points.

Bushboard supplied high risk healthcare units – healthcare boxed out units with a rigid aluminium frame and panel system – specifically designed for safe ensuites and communal wet rooms in a high security environment. Anti-ligature sanitaryware, crafted from high impact resistant, anti-shatter moulded resin, was pre-plumbed to the units ensuring the safest possible environment.

Designer Frances Cracknell of Trevillion Interiors said of the design: “We wanted the eight individual bedroom suites to be contemporary, yet sympathetic to the Arts and Crafts heritage of the original house. Each bedroom has been carefully furnished with contemporary and antique pieces and embellished with a broad art portfolio. The Portals Hills Boutique Hotel in Mallorca consists of 29 condos and 2 penthouses. Visitors are immediately struck by the flawless white facade and soft, rounded corners. With floor-to-ceiling glazing, extensive balcony and terrace areas overlooking the Mediterranean and an infinity pool, balustrades were a key design element. The balustrade not only needed to provide transparency, but also an ornamental appearance. The Q-line posted railing system ultimately comprises 316-grade stainless steel posts and handrails with delicate steel bar infill running horizontally. For some parts, curved bars were installed.
Wakefield’s New £3.76m State of the art Fire Station

The Comet Hotel is located in Hertfordshire at the junction of the Barnet by-pass with St Albans Road.
Formerly known as the Ramada Hatfield, the Comet’s multimillion pound refurbishment which began in 2017 is now complete.
The hotel had retained the building’s original crittal sash windows but this did not provide the required level of noise insulation to a number of the guestrooms, restaurant and function spaces for meetings and networking events.
St Albans based Selectaglaze installed 104 secondary glazed units, with a cavity between the primary windows and the secondary units to improve noise insulation.
Newly renovated Cambridge Church blessed with warmth from secondary glazing installation

The newly redeveloped Downing Place United Reformed Church in Cambridge required Selectaglaze secondary glazing for thermal insulation and improved energy efficiency. The Church was built in 1891 and stands within the Historic Core Conservation Area.56 units were installed; comprising of four Series 45 side hung casements in the Chapel and 52 Series 46 slimline fixed lights installed in the Nave. A timber mullioned cartwheel frame was crafted to securely hold the secondary glazing in a large circular window in the Nave. Seven bespoke Series 46 fixed light segments were made for it and glazed with 6mm toughened glass.

New steel windows and doors for sensitive replacement project

Typical of most of the houses in the Hampstead Garden Suburb, the style of this beautiful home is influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement.The original steel windows and doors were draughty and no longer fit for purpose and so they needed replacing. The Clement range of Brooking windows, which feature a specialist ‘putty fronted’ system, was chosen together with doors from the Clement W20 range, to match the originals perfectly. The new, bespoke steel doors and windows were painted ‘Jet Black’ on the outside to replicate the previous fenestration and ‘Traffic White’ on the inside to complement the interior. The homeowner said:“I am absolutely delighted with Clement and would recommend them very highly. Their workmen were very professional and swift and they left the house tidy each day. They were a pleasure to have in the house whilst they were doing the work.”

Ladywell Convent is the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) congregation, an international religious congregation of Catholic women who proclaim the joy and freedom of the Gospel in the spirit of Francis and Claire of Assisi.Situated in the beautiful Surrey hills, the Convent offers hospitality for returning Missionaries and visitors and is also the site of La Verna, a home for elderly sisters and those who support them.Previously named Tuesley Court and bought by the FMDM in 1956, Ladywell is Arts and Crafts in style, Grade II listed and an oasis of calm and tranquility just outside Godalming.An extensive refurbishment was recently carried out to the residential and conference buildings on the site ensuring their suitability for an aging group of sisters. Two new support buildings were also constructed.Side hung casements from the Clement SMW range with genuine 12mm flat leads were installed in the new Greccio building, polyester powder painted RAL 9005 (Jet Black) semi gloss with the handles, hinges and peg stays powder coated to match the frames. Windows from the Clement EB20 steel window range with 12mm oval leads were installed in the Staff Building, also painted RAL 9005.Michael O’Brien from O&D Constuction said:“Steel windows manufactured by Clement were the right choice because of their close match to the existing heritage windows at Ladywell Convent.
