Case Study: King George V Sports Hub – Enhancing Community Sports in Chester

Twinfix Limited

Chester’s new £1.8 million community sports hub, the King George V Sports Hub in Blacon, opened its doors to the public last year. This state-of-the-art facility boasts a full-size floodlit artificial grass pitch and clubhouse complete with changing accommodation, kitchen, office, and training room.Project CollaborationThe development of the King George V Sports Hub was a collaborative effort between Chester FC Community Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council. The project received a significant boost with a £1 million grant from the Premier League, The FA, and Government’s Football Foundation. The Duke of Westminster’s Westminster Foundation also committed a grant of £520,000 over five years, alongside additional funding from the council, Avenue Services, and Ursula Keyes Trust.Twinfix’s InvolvementAs part of the initiative, Twinfix was approached by Principal Contractor Wernick Buildings to design, manufacture, and install a canopy for the changing pavilion. The canopy, which spans 7 metres in length, features Twinfix’s Alu-Link-Panel system. This innovative roofing system provides excellent durability, weather resistance, and aesthetics, ensuring the longevity and functionality of the canopy for years to come.Vicky Evans, Director at Twinfix commented: “At Twinfix, we are proud to have been involved in the King George V Sports Hub project. Our Alu-Link-Panel roofing system not only enhances the functionality and aesthetics of the changing pavilion but also contributes to the overall success of the sports hub. It’s inspiring to see the positive impact this facility will have on the community, and we are honoured to have played a part in its creation.”Benefits of Twinfix’s Alu-Link-Panel SystemDurability: The Alu-Link-Panel system is built to withstand harsh weather conditions, ensuring that the canopy remains in top condition.Weather Resistance: With its robust construction, the canopy provides reliable protection from rain, wind, and UV rays, creating a comfortable environment for users regardless of the weather.Aesthetics: The sleek and modern design of the Alu-Link-Panel system enhances the overall appearance of the changing pavilion, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the sports hub.Community ImpactLocal councillors Carol Gahan, Shelia Little, and Trish Richards recently visited the site and expressed their delight with the completed project. They emphasised the significant benefits that the King George V Sports Hub will bring to Blacon and the wider community. “This is a fantastic project that will have huge benefits for Blacon and the wider community,” said the councillors. “It has been so pleasing to see how the partners have demonstrated determination in working together to overcome obstacles and deliver this wonderful new facility for the community.”The King George V Sports Hub stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit in creating positive change. It provides a hub for sports and recreation, fostering health, well-being, and community cohesion in Chester and beyond.

Yewdale Corporation Ltd

Standard Life Investments’ new £75m development at St Andrew Square in Edinburgh, as with many modern builds, it is fronted with lots of glass. It looks amazing and delivers plenty of natural light, but often requires robust shading solutions to protect people from the sun’s glare and heat. The fit-out company opted to use YewdaleDefiant® R20 systems with side channels throughout, and the YewdaleDefiant® R20M with double bracket. This allowed the installation of a dimout screen fabric and a blackout fabric, which can be easily switched between at the touch of a button. Read more...

New Clement glazing lights up this industrial style refurbishment

New Clement glazing lights up this industrial style refurbishment

Clement Windows Group

The buildings around Clerkenwell Green in London feature a mixture of architectural styles. The area is designated a Conservation Area and some properties are listed. During the nineteenth century it was a busy centre for specialised crafts and manufacture and the buildings at No 10-11 were originally constructed as warehouses. The Uniform Clothing & Equipment Company (Uniquip) occupied the two buildings from around 1910 to the 1990s and was a well known supplier of band uniforms.Stagg Architects obtained planning permission to refurbish and extend the original 13,000 sq ft building by an additional 7,000 sq ft. The renovated building comprises a new roof extension, flexible spaces on the ground and lower ground floors and offices at the upper levels.A four storey side extension infill was constructed and Clement Windows Group were selected to manufacture the new and replacement steel windows and doors throughout the building. It was very important that the new windows were in keeping with the original building and did not detract from the character and appearance of the surrounding Conservation Area and adjoining Listed Buildings.Windows and doors from the Clement EB20 steel window range were chosen and powder paint coated in black with the accompanying hinges and handles painted to match the frames. The huge wall of steel windows to the side of building includes a patterned glass which allows light to enter while also providing privacy for the neighbouring properties.Photographs taken by Matt Chisnall, @mattchisnall

Dorma Varitrans HSW single glazed acoustic moveable wall- Metropolitan Gaming, London

Style - Moveable Partition Specialists

At Metropolitan Gaming in Mayfair, London, Style worked with architects, Whitebox, and contractors, Modufit Interiors, to create the facility to section off part of the main gaming area for a private VIP lounge. A glass HSW (Horizontal Sliding Wall) was installed, giving staff the ability to rapidly divide the room into two, sectioning off a VIP gaming area to create a unique experience for clients. The moveable wall neatly divides the VIP area away from the main public gaming room, with a lockable full height intermediate door for ease of access. The bronze opaque textured glass allows light to flow through the entire area but offers the level of privacy required for a private room. Decorative transom bars bonded onto the glass add perfectly to the opulent room design.Metropolitan Gaming boasts a wealth of experience in both gaming and hospitality. It is committed to bringing a new perspective to the casino experience and is continually innovating to deliver a unique and authentic experience for its guests in each of its individual locations. “This manually operated, glass moveable wall offers a truly chic, yet practical solution for Metropolitan Gaming”, said Michael Porter, Style’s group sales director.“When not in use, customers enjoy a large open plan gaming area in this very exclusive Mayfair venue. But when a separate VIP lounge is required, away from the public areas, it can be moved into position in a matter of minutes.”According to Mark Cowley, who heads up the glass division at Style, demand for non-acoustic glass moveable walls is growing particularly quickly, with shop frontages, banks, restaurants, reception areas, residential homes, winter gardens, airports and sports stadia/arenas all using these to create flexible space.A new section of the Style website is dedicated to glass partitioning solutions with updated literature ensuring architects, contractors and end-user customers have access to all of the information they need to reach informed decisions.

Dorma Varitrans HSW single glazed Acoustic moveable wall - product launch Balcony Sliding Wall (BSW)

Style - Moveable Partition Specialists

Leading partitioning specialist, Style, has launched a new glass sliding wall solution for balconies and terraces (BSW). Transforming a balcony into functional space, glass panels are used to enclose the area, creating a barrier against weather and noise without impeding the view. On fine days, the upper section of the glass panels can be neatly folded and stacked to one side, allowing people to sit out and enjoy the sunshine. For terrace rooms that open straight out into a garden or external seating area, Style’s new glass sliding wall allows the boundary between the two spaces to be easily removed on sunny days, whilst successfully combining weather protection with uninterrupted views of the outside during inclement weather. With a discrete guidance track that can be fitted flush to the floor, the BSW system creates a truly a streamlined aesthetic. “This is an exciting addition to our portfolio of glass moveable, folding and partitioning walls,” said Mark Cowley, who heads up the glass solutions division at Style. "With space at a premium, it makes sense to extract the maximum functionality from what is available.”“Our sliding-folding glass wall system brings the outdoors in, effectively expanding the living space in residential homes. In commercial settings, such as restaurants for example, the BSW can be used to increase capacity by making use of a balcony or external area that would otherwise only be enjoyed in good weather.” Making for a welcoming environment, even when a terrace room or balcony is entirely enclosed by the glass panels, air still circulates internally thanks to tiny, 3mm gaps between that provide continuous ventilation. Any condensation is quickly filtered outside thanks to unobtrusive drainage vents and guttering.Fitted with a sophisticated roller system, the individual glass panels also incorporate autonomous pivot point identifiers, ensuring smooth and effortless manoeuvrability every time.Ideal for residential and hospitality settings, the BSW system also offers opportunities for sports clubs, retail outlets and commercial offices, wherever a more enjoyable experience could be offered by opening-up an internal area to incorporate an outdoor space.

Welcome to 120 Moorgate, a grade A office in the City of London. 3,000m2 of AGC ipasol Neutral 70/37 solar control double-glazing units and matching spandrel glazing was chosen for the facade of this extensive refurbishment project completed in 2020.In order to meet the demands of today's contemporary workspaces, a new facade was needed in order to improve the energy and acoustic comfort for occupants. With seven floors of full-height glazing, the ipasol Neutral 70/37 double glazing specification allows for the highest level of daylight and connection with the outside environment whilst protecting against overheating thanks to its solar gain reduction properties (g-value of 0.37). The fastest growing use of energy in buildings is for cooling, so harnessing existing technologies such as solar control glass can contribute to a sustainable building strategy.A low U-value of 1.0W/m².K was also a given, in view of the facade's thermal insulation requirements. Laminated glass was also incorporated in the specification of the double-glazing units as an acoustic enhancement to help protect against nuisance noise and also as a safety measure since the full-height glazing is accessible from interior spaces.Design work by Darling Associates and installation undertaken by specialist facade contractor Anglian Architectural.120 Moorgate is rated BREEAM Very Good.
