Sutton station, owned and operated by Network Rail needed refurbishment. The station was showing signs of its age, with the old timber work in need of replacing, the roof leaking and the glass roof sections in need of some TLC. Due to their age, the glass roof sections had become fragile and had subsequently broken, Also because of the difficulty in safely cleaning them, they were proving more of a light blocker, than a source of natural light.It was decided that the glass roof sections would need replacing and in order to do this, Twinfix were consulted by Network Rail and asked to offer a solution. Twinfix were mindful of the aesthetics of the station but were also very aware that they could offer something which would provide a long-term solution for the station. Utilising their Multi-Link-Panel System, Twinfix put forward a solution which would do justice to the refurbishment work, the station was receiving whilst bringing the roof up to date and delivering an outcome which would last the test of time. By replacing the old steel and glass sections with their sustainable aluminium and polycarbonate Multi-Link-Panel System, Twinfix’s proposed solution would maintain the look and feel of the old roof, but deliver something which is virtually unbreakable, doesn’t need repairing or regular replacement and would allow routine cleaning to be carried out, keeping the station flooded with light. By replacing the old glass with a slightly obscured 6mm polycarbonate, the light inside the station would be diffused rather than harsh, and significantly brighter than the current situation.The new system would not only last the rigours of time, but is made of sustainable materials. Polycarbonate has minimal impact on the environment and is fully recyclable at the end of its long life. Polycarbonate panels, used in place of glass can be manufactured to give the same look as more traditional glass with features such as Georgian wired but with a significant weight saving. This weight saving means that transportation, manual handling of lifting is easier and requires less energy, plus the structural elements can be reduced as the weight they are required to support is reduced. The result is a total saving on energy and materials needed for installation. Once installed polycarbonate is considerably stronger than glass and is unlikely to break. Depending upon the requirements and location of the installation, Twinfix manufacture a ‘non-fragile’ version which, in testing could withstand far greater impact than an equivalent glass panel. This is especially good for areas where people might accidentally step or fall onto the panels such as rail station roofs. This inherent toughness also reduces the need to replace the glazing panel as often as glass and with UV coatings the panel doesn’t yellow with age or become brittle.Aluminium is known as the ‘Green metal’ due to its ability to be recycled again and again, without degradation of its inherent properties. Recycling aluminium also saves 95% of the energy required in the production of aluminium from raw materials. Compared to traditional steel, aluminium is approximately 2.5 times lighter, strength for strength, so again there is a weight saving comparable to that associated with polycarbonate over glass. Unlike steel, aluminium will not rust, and the application of powder coating will prevent corrosion. Powder coating is a pigment encapsulated in a powdered resin and then cured in an oven to harden the paint surface.Working with the roofing contractor, G.S. Moore, and as part of the larger station refurbishment, delivered by BAM Nuttall, Twinfix were able to replace the existing damaged glass roof in the entrance, the footbridge and the platform adding up to an area over 340 metres square, bathing the covered areas in natural light.Vicky Evans, Director at Twinfix, said; “It was a pleasure working with the team at Network Rail, G.S.Moore and BAM Nuttall. Designed and Manufactured by Simplicity Timber Solutions this curved folding sliding door system was crafted for an opening of 9 linear meters. This was designed to enable a 10 door leaf system to be effortlessly opened, plus it folds and slides in the same direction. To seamlessly bring the room together, Accoya was also used for the 16 sided hex decagon lantern light ceiling feature. Dimensional stability is key for large joinery installations such as this.

Bygga Construction extended this magnificent London family home to include a master suite and guest wing. As part of the project the basement was dug out to create a massive family room, complete with wine cellar. Three Clement double steel door sets were included in the design for the rear elevation. Not only do these create a stunning feature but they allow plenty of natural light into the increased family living space.

Manor Park is a new build development of 53 homes, located on the northern edge of Ashford in Kent. RCM supplied 216 planks of 190mm wide Supertech Weatherboard in a stained Light Oak finish. Plastestrip end and starter profiles (Plasticlad) were also supplied colour matched. Berry Systems supply and installed safety barriers and balustrading to protect loading bays, warehouse racking, pedestrian walkways and the plant.The new Co-Operative Composite Distribution Centre in Birtley covers 25,600 sq metres (276,000 sq ft) and supplies a vast range of products from 3,500 lines to 262 Co-Operative stores in the North of England.Activity in the centre is extremely busy with hundreds of vehicle movements daily facilitated by 500+ members of staff. We won the contract to supply and install all the safety barriers, balustrades, loading bay barriers and racking protectors inside the warehouse, as well as the vehicle perimeter barriers and ramp barriers externally.All the products, with the exception of the galvanised spring steel barriers, were painted in high visibility yellow. The spring steel barriers are designed to absorb  impacts from HGVs and forklift trucks while retaining their own integrity and ongoing effectiveness. The Co-Op were determined to ensure their new development was as environmentally friendly as possible. Waste oil helps provide heating and the lighting system is solar controlled to eliminate wastage. It ensures a variable level of interior lighting to automatically complement exterior levels.

Orbis OS200 Vertical Bar Infill Side FixOrbis OS211 Glass Infill Top FixProviding more than 120,000 sq ft, of innovation space for high growth enterprises, this project is situated within Imperial College London’s White City campus. Built by a market leader with specialist expertise in modular buildings, this project demanded a high level of innovation, and a balustrade supplier that delivered on cost, quality, and timescales. The main reception area is dominated by a large feature stair providing access to all floors, and the Orbis balustrades with glass infill achieve a stunning first impression and allow maximum light through the space from the vast glazed roof lights above. Throughout the three core stairs, which are used for general circulation and escape routes, the vertical bar infill panels within the Orbis balustrade was used. This robust modular panel solution is pre-manufactured to speed up installation on site, which was extremely important to the main contractor. Individual stair cores were not closed for extended periods of time, which means greater productivity, less management time, and reduced risk for the main contractor.

The feeling of light and space created by the school’s two atriums is carried through by HiBuild coated Mono system balustrades with stainless steel handrails. These enable the creation of safe viewing galleries/walkways, overlooking the open plan library mezzanine and the central ‘Agora’ theatre space.The same system was used to create the handrails for the school’s six staircases, maximising natural light and enhancing transparency as students and staff move around the building. Delta Balustrades worked collaboratively with the design team to ensure that the balustrades and handrails not only meet the aesthetic requirements for the scheme but that the fixing detail for the atriums fully comply with loading requirements.

The £45 million world-class School of Management is the flagship building of the University of Bath. The seven-storey building brings together the entire school under one roof and is a place to inspire new levels of collaboration and showcase the excellent learning, research, and industry partnerships available.The three principles of the design are flexibility, transparency, and collaboration. At the centre of the building is an impressive atrium with a feature steel staircase.   Within the atrium is the pavilion, a double height space flooded with natural light has been designed as a hub of activity where great minds meet. The buildings two arms emerge from a central node, each wing housing an array of academic and research space. The design brief called for openness and transparency which was achieved by the use of Lusso glazed partitioning throughout. The Lusso 25 glazed system and Silenzio doors were used to enhance and divide up space which at the same time allows natural light to filter through the building and encourage connectivity. Where the design required glass partitions in excess of 3.5 metres height the Lusso 105 glazed system was selected to meet the structural requirement which has created a visually impactful atrium.

ATi Supplied anti-slip stair nosings for another AFA ‘Access for All’ footbridge at Liphook station in Hampshire. This is part of a Network Rail replacement project worth £5.3million, the bridge is set to provide better journeys for passengers and improve station access. The structure features a lift on each platform to provide the step-free access for disabled users. The footbridge with runs over two platforms, upgrading CCTV and lighting simultaneously.

Designed by Wilson Architecture, The Dean Hotel is 120 bedroom boutique hotel overlooking Horgan's Quay. 1,000m of red and blue double skin FAIRs (factory assembled insulating rooflights) provide an even and diffused daylight spread in Middlewich environmental hub in Cheshire. The hub operates as a multi-use site and the angled composite panels were fitted to a recycling centre as well as a vehicle workshop. The FAIRs were manufactured to to meet the specific light transmission requirements stipulated by the customer and specified to meet insulation fire and safety requirements.

The architect Alvaro Planchuelo reproduced the real atmosphere of the seafloor. For this exceptional realization, he chose Barrisol® printed stretched ceiling to reproduce an undersea sight. From this assessment the Dolphin ALAVO modular system was chosen to be an integral part of the upgrade as it contained all the required elements of mirrors, lighting, taps, hand dryers, paper towel and soap dispensers in an attractive integrated modular system. Working with designer Katherine Rawlings and contractor Sarah Constructions, Dolphin Solutions AU was able to deliver the ALAVO system as pictured to be a vital part of the upgrade works at Adelaide Airport South Australia.

A mixed use development for Leeds Metropolitan University and property group Downing, some of the building’s diversity comes from the expression of the fenestration which encorporates integrated low-energy design. The apparently random patterns were composed to ensure that the vertically modulated cuts provided an orientation-specific balance of daylight penetration and solar gain reduction. The result is a building with irregular sides which maximises natural light without creating overheating.

Eluviis OÜ an interior designer asked TK-Team if they could help with a noisy area in a new sprts centre in Finland. We specified a bright and airy combinaation of Hush Light Round acoustic panels  they were both hung from the ceiling and mounted to the wall. It helped to eliminate reverb and reduce unwanted noise. In addition, thes coloured panels were in different shades and suspended levels adding a little playfulness to the room.

As part of the Railway Upgrade Plan, Platform 1 at Stamford Station in Lincolnshire was recently refurbished. Careful consideration resulted in the use of Twinfix Multi-Link-Panels Non-Fragile to replace the old curved corrugated roofing of the canopy and the end result is more in keeping with the original age and design of this elegant Grade II listed building. Passengers and staff are now all benefiting from the high levels of natural light that floods the platform.

The Reflections project features multiple freestanding banks of mailboxes combined with LED lighting areas behind frosted glass. Trumpington Community College was designed and built with strong sustainability in mind and features 245 VELUX Modular Skylights. Sustainability drove every aspect of the college masterplan, including a transport target for 90% of students to arrive by foot, bicycle or public transport. The college wanted to create a level of transparency that would allow students and staff the benefit of light as well as a glimpse of the weather outside, while preventing glare and high contrast ratios.

The Lantern is the result of a wholesale redevelopment and reimagining of a large eight story building in Euston, Central London. Developer owners Lazari Investments have worked with Marks Barfield Architects to create a stunning scheme which successfully meets the current desire for built inner city environments to offer contemporary and elegant work space alongside areas designed for leisure, relaxation and retail therapy.Rockfon were very pleased to be specified for the project which offers 23,000m2 of mixed-use space including offices, café’s, shops and apartments. The building, called “Galileo” is composed by a single “E” body positioned around two courtyards . The project is distributed on several buildings connected by a corridor , completely bathed in light, but under sustainable and ecological purposes. Our Premium Plus roller shades contribute to cover its high ceilings and provide perfect sunlight management in the classrooms while maintaining the views. The combination with the Polyscreen ® 351 White allows great solar reflection, and acoustic absorption. They contributed to achieving the LEED Platinum Certification, being the first university to get it in the entire world.

London based Granit Architects, chose Clement Windows to manufacture and install this fabulous two storey steel screen for this residential project in Clapham. Clement’s EB24 steel window system was specified for its slim, strong sections, allowing maximum light gain. The screen which included a multi point locking single door on the ground floor is polyester powder coated in RAL 9005 matt black and finished with a dark bronze effect handle.

"The works compromise the conversion of a former Dominican Church, a protected structure into a Town Library. Our goal was to retain the unique character, spatial and light qualities of the church while also providing a functional & comfortable library space. All windows are also furnished with beautiful, light sheers to reduce solar heat gain and maximise resident’s privacy and exclusivity.

We supplied and installed vertical fins, brise soleil light shelves and louvred rooftop plant screens on Arco’s new five-storey office building – as well as fins and an expanded mesh façade to the 350-space car park.“The overall look of the new development is modern and bold, and has already received many positive comments about its ‘iconic’ appearance,” said Arco’s Estates & Facilities Project Leader, Steve Owen.

The impact a school provides starts from its outside appearance. This allows the pupils, parents and teachers to maintain a positive attitude about where they study and work creating a positive vibe. This often follows suit internally with design as well as the performance of a school feeling proud to be part of. The choice of material required was initially zinc but we also needed to ensure the product was as light as possible, we therefore proposed Falzinc which is a Zinc coated Aluminium.

The VELFAC composite system has been installed in two award-winning student halls built for the University of St Andrews. Designed by HLM Architects, Powell and Whitehorn Halls provide comfortable and stylish accommodation for over 380 undergraduates and postgraduates, with VELFAC windows providing excellent thermal insulation and maximum natural light. VELFAC units are also integral to innovative architectural façade features, including dramatic glazed screens and angled window pods.

The award winning Copper Building, designed by Ferguson Mann Architects, adds 136 new apartments to Bristol’s Lakeshore scheme, an ambitious regeneration project by Urban Splash. The distinctive, copper-clad four-storey building is a thoughtful solution to higher-density living, underpinned by sustainable building performance. Generous glazing is a key feature of the project, with VELFAC triple glazed slim-framed composite windows bringing extra light into apartments and communal spaces.

Great emphasis has been placed on the functionality of the building and on making the area outside a pleasant park. Ørestaden is a fairly new area of Copenhagen and had quickly become known for fascinating architecture. Vetrotech supplied over 1,600m2 of Contraflam Lite Structure EW30 solutions. Vetrotech's glass helped realize the stunning and light-flooded atriums of the building, which are surrounded by an impressive installation of fire-resistant glass all the way up to the 6th floor.
