John Perry Primary School – Wall Mounted Canopy Case Study

John Perry Primary School – Wall Mounted Canopy Case Study

Able Canopies Ltd

John Perry Primary School, Dagenham, EssexCouncil: London Borough of Barking & Dagenham CouncilProduct: The Coniston Wall Mounted CanopySize: 5m x 4mOutdoor Projects Package: Steel Mesh Fencing & Retaining Concrete WallFrame Colour: Hipca WhiteInstallation Date: August 2020 Brief London Borough of Barking & Dagenham were looking to revamp the outdoor play area at John Perry Primary School and transform it into a secure, all-weather outside area that can be used all year round. We had previously worked with them on a number of projects at Eastbrook Primary School where we had installed Two Wall Mounted Canopies in 2019, Three Freestanding Canopies in 2022 and a Timber Canopy in 2022. Also, at the time of enquiry, we had just been awarded the contract for the large timber canopy at Manor Longbridge Infant School, which both fall within LBBD’s constituency.Proposal The council sent over their specifications which included a canopy, soft play safety surfacing, associated drainage & kerbings and a retaining wall. They were also looking to have all works completed within the schools’ summer break, so that all building works would be completed before the staff and pupils returned. As part of our outdoor projects service, we can provide the whole canopy package including groundworks such as soft play, tarmac, artificial grass and aluminium decking along with fencing such as timber or steel. This helps to make the project for the client much more seamless. Solution We were therefore able to send the LBBD council a quote to include all the works they required making the project much simpler for them and they would be dealing with just one company, rather than multiple contractors. The canopy we provided a quote for was a 5m x 4m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy on rear and front goal posts. This would fit the space perfectly and provide all the cover required to keep pupils dry, cool and shaded when required. The canopy area was not suitable for the standard Coniston wall mounted option, due to the makeup of the building being single storey and largely windows and doors. We were able to provide a rear steel goal post/bracket system, which allowed us to fix to each side of the area. This solved the obstacle perfectly without any issues, and all parties were happy with the solution. The Coniston is such a versatile canopy that can overcome almost any obstruction, allowing schools and businesses across the UK to benefit from weather protection all year round. You can read more about the Coniston and its versatility here: The Coniston Versatile CanopyInstallationWe were awarded the project at the beginning of one of our busiest times of year, the school summer holidays. However, as we stock the components in our HQ warehouse, this enabled us to achieve a super-quick order-to-installation timescale, and we were able to find a slot available to ensure the canopy works were completed before the school returned in September. All parties involved were pleased with the end result, and the pupils and staff were able to enjoy their new outdoor play area upon their return to school in September.

It features AluK’s SL52 flexible capped curtain walling system throughout, with an entrance door fabricated using the suited GT55TB door system. The diagonal design and irregular angles meant that AluK had to create a solution with multiple transom and mullion sections which was cost effective, while still being true to the aesthetic and meeting the static considerations and performance requirements laid out.

ESCREO

Online supermarket eBag choses ESCREO magnetic whiteboard paint to ensure a creative, dynamic and innovative office environment where they can discuss new ideas and processes every day. eBag has changed the way people shop in their day-to-day lives by offering them a wonderful alternative to the traditional supermarket. It all starts with its Founder's dream to spend his free time with his family in a more pleasant way, rather than going around the shops and queuing. They put the customer at the centre of everything they do just as we do at ESCREO. On the other hand, ESCREO has changed the way people write on the wall and the way eBag's team implements new processes and ideas. Their ESCREO writable wall gives them the perfect space to expand them in detail. They like that it does not limit them in scale, and this is important for the process of visualising all the innovations that they discuss every day. It is convenient that it is magnetic and in addition to writing, they can also attach various materials to what is written there. It fits perfectly to the interior of their office and our magnetic whiteboard paint encourages creativity in all of them. We make the difference together with our clients! You can read our interview with Hristo Yankov, COO of eBag, to learn in more detail how eBag brings creativity and innovation to their office wall as they do with their business.

Solving a stud wall flanking issue in a residential property, East Sussex

Solving a stud wall flanking issue in a residential property, East Sussex

Hush Acoustics

A residential developer approached Hush Acoustics after an acoustic test conducted on their project in St Leonards on Sea failed to achieve the acoustic compliance level needed under Approved Document E of the Building Regulations. The problem stemmed from a separating wall between two bedrooms which was constructed using a timber stud wall and had an overall thickness of 170mm. Its acoustic design was adequate on paper, but there was one issue that had not been correctly treated. One of the rooms measured 37m3 and the other 29m3 in size, with one notable consistent feature being a screed laid over a concrete floor. An airborne sound insulation sample test was carried out with no floor covering in place and this revealed a result of DnTw+Ctr 31dB.Levels of ‘flanking’ sound were significant - this meant sound was passing under the separating wall via the floor screed. The solution proposed by Hush Acoustics was to install Hush Mat 15 over the screed floor in both rooms. The effectiveness of this solution was evident in the follow-up test result of DnTw+Ctr 44dB. Whilst this result would be regarded as an average performance in most other types of buildings, the improvement here from a poor DnTw+Ctr of 31dB to 44db showed that Hush Mat 15 had delivered significant improvement and provided a solution to flanking transmission sound sources. The ensured the residential development satisfied the requirements of Approved Document E.

Hillingdon Hospital - Coniston wall mounted/Rear steel goal post canopy

Able Canopies Ltd

The BriefHillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge, London were undergoing a refurbishment and required additional facilities to help keep their patients, staff and visitors dry and sheltered when arriving and leaving the hospital. The project, which was managed by Kier Construction and Blue Iris Partnerships, included a number of canopies along the entrance to their emergency department where patients and ambulances arrive 24/7.A speedy installation was an important factor, because the hospital had an ever-increasing need for outside cover due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Their staff, patients and visitors had to wait outside more frequently due to the current restrictions in place. The SolutionWhen putting our product forward to the Architect, Kier Construction explained that while our product wasn’t specified, the main features were in fact equal to the specified product and are designed for use in commercial settings, making it the perfect solution. This product is the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy which is an extremely versatile, commercial grade structure that met all the features required by both the Architect and the hospital including: A mono-pitch structure, integral guttering and drainage to the ground floor with no visible gutters, constructed from 100% non-corrosive material (aluminium) and a non-fragile polycarbonate roof system.Even though the Coniston is a wall mounted structure, some of the canopies detailed in this project needed to be free standing as the existing ramp that the canopy would cover is a distance from the wall. This was not an issue as the Coniston can be installed with rear posts transforming it into a free standing canopy.
