When charity, Small Steps, secured its new home at the heart of Richmond, it required a warm and welcoming interior environment that would support children living with physical disabilities and their families. Providing the perfect natural canvas, Forbo Flooring Systems' linoleum brand, Marmoleum, was installed throughout the purpose built facility. Spread over three floors of a former office building on Worple Way, the 517 m² site that Small Steps now calls home, was funded through a generous donation. BackgroundLocated in Stroud, the Park Parade, Park Road refurb project was part of a large refurbishment planned by Stroud District Council. The shopping area and sheltered accommodation scheme were given a complete revamp with internal and external work being completed.MD Group from Bristol were awarded the contract by Stroud District Council and were appointed as the main contractor. A new external wall insulation system was installed, along with an extensive refurbishment to the communal areas, external balconies and roofing. Our approved installer Elite Rendering Systems were contracted by MD Group to complete the exterior wall insulation.Alongside Elite, we transformed the premises aesthetically creating modern homes and commercial premises. The buildings were given a new lease of life, and together with Elite we delivered safe, stylish and energy efficient buildings that will help to reduce fuel bills for residents and help decarbonise the Council’s housing stock.Our ServiceOur Technical team were available to provide hands-on-guidance throughout the duration of the project. As part of our service commitment, our K Systems Site Technician regularly visited the project to inspect progress, offer support and ensure high levels of construction quality.As the ground floor of Park Parade is used for commercial premises, one challenging aspect of the project was the detailing and installing around complex interfaces such as air conditioning/refrigeration units. We transformed the outside of the properties with a durable, low maintenance solution that is fully compliant with fire regulations and fulfilled the Council’s criteria.The combination of finishes used not only delivered the desired contemporary aesthetic but provided an additional benefit of cost savings for the client. Residents of Park Parade, Park Road will enjoy reduced energy bills and better living conditions thanks to the U-value improvement.Technical Project DetailsFollowing design and site meetings with the K Systems Technical team, K Systems M (Mineral Wool) was specified by Bailey Partnership Architects and Stroud District Council. This system incorporates eco-friendly mineral wool insulation boards. As an A2-s1, d0 firerated solution, it is widely specified to provide thermal and aesthetic improvements to buildings, reducing energy usage and therefore energy costs.K Systems M, utilising non-combustible insulation, ensured the latest building safety regulations were met. Thanks to its exceptional properties, the thermal performance of the walls after installation has been significantly enhanced. A U-value of 0.27 W/m²K was achieved, which will help to reduce the residents fuel bills and reduce the level of condensation forming on the inside walls – two key objectives for the client.For the finish, high-performance Silkolitt+ silicone renders were supplied along with our lightweight synthetic brick slips (VBriQ). This combination improved the aesthetics of the buildings for its residents.Silkolitt+ silicone thin coat renders are available in a wide range of colours offering a contemporary finish. The excellent vapour permeability allows the building to breathe and prevents interstitial condensation. The flexibility of the finish provides resistance against cracking and increases the durability, ensuring a long-lasting finish to the properties. It is very user friendly, and its hydrophobic properties reduce maintenance requirements.Accredited by the BBA, the K Systems VBriQ brick slips provide top tier Cateogory 1 impact performance and are ideal for use on this project. This lightweight system is quick and simple to install and has high UV resistance while also allowing the original brick colour to be maintained. An extremely durable finish that will withstand the day-to-day demands placed Park Parade, Park Road.

When a significant UK security site needed a complete upgrade to its perimeter fencing, Zaun stepped in with a cost-effective and highly secure solution.The task aheadDue to the compassionate nature of the site, guarding against the physical threat and providing a visual screen was important. Therefore, the perimeter had to meet the high standards of the Centre for Protection of National Infrastructure [CPNI] and be capable of housing Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems [PIDS] – a sensor mounted on the fence.As there was no current security fencing system that includes a visual block approved by CPNI, it was thought that two fences were required. One of these fences would provide high-security protection and the other a screen from prying eyes.Installing an additional conventional louvre screen would have been expensive and taken up too much room, so Zaun’s development team came up with a solution to address both of these issues.The Patent Pending system uses horizontal louvres that cleverly link into the mesh; this keeps cost and size down as the mesh itself becomes part of the louvre system. The furthermore, them grabs the wires as it is installed to ensure a tight fit, thus preventing rattles that might interfere with the acoustic PIDS system. This clever design saves costs and space. In addition, the product can be configured to provide varying degrees of screening.What Was SuppliedCPNI approved HiSec Super 6 high-security fencing system is designed for sensitive, high-profile sites. The vertical wires are 6mm in diameter with 76.2mm x 12.7mm spacings, enhancing a standard 358 system.Louvre privacy screens are easily attached to the robust fencing eliminating the need for two sets of fencing. Manufactured from 2mm thick steel sheets, which are folded to form the louvre. The galvanised sheets cleverly grab onto the mesh as they are installed, improving privacy and making the 358 mesh more rigid.This whole private and secure fencing system can also have PIDS easily attached. These mounted detection systems give early warning to any attempts of intrusion, whether penetration or climbing. It offers discreet monitoring and early warning and can be fitted on existing fencing units.

Challenging brief The CLD team worked closely from the initial design stage to ensure they met budgets and a challenging brief: to create a fencing design that was attractive and fun whilst providing optimal safety for the school and its 200 pupils. CLD supplied the Dulok Wavetop system for discreet but robust security, the Dulok Rebound system for high performance sports fencing and locking gates with a Slidemaster main gate. A unique multi-coloured ‘pencil’ fence was also added marking out the play area with large pencil-shaped posts with wooden tops that can be re-painted by the children in any colour.

Warwick Court, the former Goldman Sach's headquarters on Paternoster Square in London, is being redeveloped by Mace Group after they won the £60m project in 2020. Newton Specialist Contractor ASF Waterproofing specified a waterproof and hard-wearing coating system for the floor of the plant rooms. As a result, ASF Waterproofing designed and installed a watertight system utilising Newton 110 WATstop and Newton 701-HB. ASF Waterproofing provided a completely watertight solution following the guidelines set out in BS 9102:2009. The works were carried out to a high standard and delivered on time, despite the tight schedule.

The sheer volume of passengers visiting Stansted Airport on a daily basis puts an enormous strain on the airport facilities, including the washrooms. System M was specified for the refurbishment due to its strength and durability. System M’s patented emergency access system is made possible by an innovative pivoting pilaster. The pilaster is ‘squeezed’ allowing normally opening inward doors to be pulled outwards in the event of an emergency at the airport. Technical representatives from F. Ball have provided flooring with a cost-effective alternative to completely removing and replacing a weakened screed as part of a flooring refurbishment at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University. Upon removing old floorcoverings, flooring contractors were faced with an extremely rough screed with weak patches, possibly the result of poor installation or curing techniques, environmental factors or age, that was unsuitable for the application of subfloor preparation products and the installation of floorcoverings. Some weak sections were mechanically removed, leaving about 75mm thickness to be made up. A structural engineer confirmed that the concrete bases were, otherwise, structurally sound. New P5 chipboard was affixed to the wood subfloors with screws and glued at the joins. It is often necessary to completely remove and replace a weakened screed. However, F. Ball technical representatives called upon to conduct a site assessment were able to recommend a less costly and time-consuming solution to make the surface suitable to receive floorcoverings, including quickly raising the level of floors where sections had been mechanically prepared. Firstly, any remaining weak spots in the base would need to be removed by mechanical means along with any surface contaminants to create a clean, sound micro-textured finish. Any dust and debris should also be swept away. Moisture tests indicated subfloor relative humidity (RH) levels in the concrete subfloors were as high as 78%, meaning a moisture management solution would be required. Contractors therefore applied a single coat of Stopgap F77 solvent-free epoxy waterproof surface membrane over the entire area to obtain a continuous barrier against subfloor moisture. Flooring contractors then used Stopgap 600 Base deep section levelling compound to raise the level of floors where weak patches of screed had been removed.  It was also recommended that the chipboard over the raised access floors was checked to ensure that the surface was clean, secure and undamaged before applying a minimum thickness of 0.2mm of Stopgap Fill and Prime over the entire area.  The whole subfloor area was then capped with a layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro high performance levelling compound to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of new floorcoverings. The final phase of the refurbishment was to install Nora rubber sheet floorcoverings using Styccobond F48 PLUS. 

he NHS Trust commissioned Breath Energy to review its estate, recommend and manage a programme of works to significantly reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions.Central to the works was the external upgrade of the main Epsom Hospital premises, the Wells Building, to improve thermal performance and address failings in the building fabric. The existing roof areas had failed and were allowing water ingress, potentially not only damaging the building fabric and energy efficiency but essential hospital equipment.Langley’s project team had to devise solutions that enabled the whole building exterior- facades and roofs – to be upgraded while the seven-storey hospital remained operational. Added to the complexity, the project began while Covid-19 restrictions were in force.Our solution: Detailed roof surveys prior to work commencing enabled us to identify potential problems and advise on effective solutions in advance.We recommended full strip-up of the roofs, as the existing had perished beyond economical repair. We advised new construction with TA-25 W Flat Roofing System on the main roof, stairwell roof and plant room areas. The TA-25 system is independently certified by the BBA (British Board of Agreement) confirming Broof (t4) classification. It also has LABC assured accreditation to provide support with regard to building control. The inclusion of insulation meant the new roof achieved the current requirement of 0.18W/m2K.While a full strip-up of the two terraces and balcony would also have been the preferred solution, the depth of work would have been impractical as the hospital’s operating theatres were below, and in use. Our solution was to remove the existing top layer and replace with PC-20W Liquid Roofing System and install breather vents to address moisture within.

The future looks bright for students at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) thanks to its newly refurbished airy and inviting library space. Using Forbo Flooring Systems' Marmoleum Modular in contrasting colours and designs, a unique yet functional flooring design has been created, which has also led the project to be recognised as the winner of the Highly Commended award in 2016/17 UK Fly Forbo competition.

Calming colours and patterns have helped to create a special environment for mothers and babies at Glan Clwyd Hospital. Forbo Flooring Systems’ Sphera Element vinyl collection was specified throughout the Mother and Baby Unit, due to its bright and fresh appearance, high-performance and durability. A new state-of-the-art Jaguar Landrover showroom was built for the Helston Group in Taunton. The facilities reflect the latest corporate identity concept and comes complete with a new workshop, multi-storey rooftop parking, and an interactive showroom configuration with display systems.The showroom features wide open spaces and a large sales area to provide the customer with a first-class experience. It also affords staff members greater visibility throughout the showroom and forecourt areas. Lusso were appointed by main contractor, Acheson Construction, to provide internal glazing throughout the showroom and workshop area. Lusso 25 frameless single glazed partitioning system and complimentary Lusso glass doors were installed to form individual offices which allow privacy when needed, whilst still maintaining visibility of the showroom. Lusso 105 double glazed frameless partitions were installed to provide a barrier between the showroom and workshop area.The use of stylish internal glazing as part of the backdrop to the stunning Jaguar Landrover range certainly makes an impact. The end result blends functionality and aesthetics, providing a stylish and contemporary showroom worthy of the prestigious Jaguar Land Rover brand.

The Project A modernised, revamped nursery based in The Old Courthouse, Ednal Lane. The Nursery prides itself on its high-quality interior and services ensuring children and parents alike enjoy first class facilities and equipment as standard.Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid officially opened My First Friends Nursery and Pre-School on November 13th, 2015, and commented “The facilities look great fun for the kids”.The Challenge Propose a system with children of nursery age in mind. Consider the height of the doors & partitions.Peardrop range is not supported by an overhead rail and the frontage is fixed at the floor and gable walls only.Flooring substate needs to be at lease 60mm thick and stable to ensure a secure fixing point at the base of the foot. The Solution Consult with the client and survey the area to ensure suitable fixing points.Harlequin Peardrop is the idea system for children of nursery age, the system is self-supporting on an aluminium leg; the legs ability to perform is reliant of the strength of the floor substrate which in this case proved suitable, enabling the client to proceed with this infant friendly system.The full system is professionally manufactured with children in mind providing easily accessible doors for children whilst ensuring efficient dimensions for adults to supervise.

For the new Calderwood primary school, part of the Calderwood Master-plan development in West Lothian, JM architects was tasked with creating an open and collaborative space for teachers and students to enjoy for years to come. Two 20 storey buildings, one a hotel and the other a luxury residential and commercial apartment block, have been constructed near Wembley Stadium. Triton Systems was appointed by the main contractor, Donban Construction, to supply a watertight concrete system for the large underground car park which will serve both buildings.

How do you replace the water distribution system in a 100-year-old prominent building? That was the challenge for contractors Capri Mechanical Services who took on replacing and updating the domestic services at the prestigious Strand Palace. Their solution was simple: replace all pipework and utilise Viega press technology to install the systems in a way which protected the hotel and met building requirements.

Stagecoach West operates and maintains 65 buses serving over 5.5 million passengers annually within the Swindon area alone.So back in 2016; Stagecoach West relocated to a brand new £3.2million development, in order to expand their services and base depot. A global construction, energy and infrastructure organisation required a durable, chemical resistant floor coating solution with an anti-slip profile that would withstand the daily wear and tear of its internal vehicle repair and maintenance facility. VINCI Construction is part of VINCI Group, a multinational enterprise with operations in the energy, infrastructure and construction industries. Founded in 1899, the company now has a presence in over 120 countries with a global team of around 220,000 people. The Widnes facility is one of ten VINCI Construction UK locations and houses, among other facilities, a vehicle maintenance workshop where the company ensures their fleet of general and specialist vehicles. The industrial unit that houses the workshop previously had a concrete paving slab floor that proved to be uneven, unsafe, and difficult to maintain.  Not only did the new flooring solution need to address these concerns, it also needed to be both slip and chemical resistant as well as feature clearly marked automotive bays and provide enough durability to withstand frequent wheeled traffic as well as the impact of dropped tools and the weight of heavy equipment. Installed in a combination of RAL 7037 Dusty Grey and RAL 6024 Traffic Green, vebrores EP HBC was installed across the 332 m2 vehicle workshop, with the Traffic Green used to mark out the facility’s six automotive bays, before being outlined using vebrodeck PU Linemarker in Yellow. Prior to the installation of vebrores EP HBC SR – a system comprising an initial layer of vebro EP Primer followed two coats of vebro EP Universal with a broadcast of 52 mesh silica sand after the first coat for an anti-slip profile – the pre-existing concrete paving slabs were first coated with an epoxy DPM and a 20.0 mm screed to level the surface. vebrores EP HBC SR is a pigmented, solvent-free, slip-resistant high build epoxy floor coating system that is best suited to floors in medium duty processing areas where a textured, hard-wearing, chemical resistant finish is required. Available in a wide range of BS 4008 or RAL matched shades, the system is ideally suited to areas where there is a need for navigational demarcation and zoning. 

Glan Clwyd hospital is one of Roché’s many public sector customers.The hospital required a total of fifteen shutters: a mix of M411 shutters and fire shutters.Roché’s fire shutters are linked to the building’s modern fire control and security management system, helping to prevent the spread of fire outbreaks, ensuring the safety of patients and staff.M411 shutters are used on reception counters to protect sensitive documents and controlled areas during closed hours.

The Project That Harnessed Evolve ZeroThis residential project used Evolve Zero blinds to replace existing blind systems for a set of bifold doors.Evolve Zero blinds are one of the most high quality solutions on the market when it comes to covering large windows or doors.They are a solution unique to Umbra, being equipped with an anti-bending technology which allows the Evolve Zero to cover spaces monumentally larger than previously possible.Problems regular blinds face when covering large areas:The blind fabric sagging inwards.The roller mechanism becoming too large.The top mechanism bends out of shape with the weight of the blind.Benefits of the new anti-bending technology:Blinds can cover up to 5 meters horizontally.Mechanisms are more compact.There is less light leak than using two blinds to cover the same area.This project shows that Evolve Zero blinds are the perfect solution when covering large areas of glazing.

Providing the solution for EWI retrofit on non-traditional build housingHaving successfully completing the previous 2 phases, K Systems were approached to provide a specification for EWI installation onto two non-traditional build housing types: 5M and Caspon. Both archetypes are of timber frame construction with single skin brick infills at ground level and a mixture of hanging tiles or cladding on upper floors. Typical of non-traditional build housing, the technical team at K Systems had to pay particular attention to bespoke detailing to derive a suitable EWI solution to meet the client’s requirements.The hanging tiles and cladding were removed from the upper floor(s) and replaced with timber sheathing boards to allow for a uniform aesthetic and a striking contemporary finish.Delivering a robust, safe and aesthetic system solution to meet the project requirementsHull City Council wanted to improve the thermal efficiency of their housing stock whilst provide a durable and more contemporary aesthetic look for the project. A combination of K Systems M Silicone and K Systems M VBriQ was used to achieve a u-value of 0.28 using varying thicknesses of A1 non-combustible mineral wool (80mm to 150mm) to adapt to the variety of substrates typical of non-traditional build housing. The combination of acrylic brick slips and polymer enhanced silicone topcoats achieved an appearance that is durable and elevated the dated look of the estate to a more modern feel. Our team worked extensively with the appointed architect preparing bespoke detailed drawings for the various archetypes, particularly transitions between the brick and timber substrates, cills, verges, rooflines, gas boxes and below DPC. Weekly demand planning meetings ensured timely delivery of materials to the appointed contractor.We ensured the correct fixings were specifiedK Systems commissioned pull-out tests to determine the optimum fixings and washers to be used to anchor the EWI system to the different substrates. A combination of hammer fixings and screw fixings were specified.

The roof on Bede Primary School and Community Centre in Gateshead was in great need of repair. Installing roofing contractors Hodgson and Allon liaised with IKO to refine the specification to meet the client’s requirements. This included a full strip and re-cover with a flame free system to carry a 20 year guarantee. IKO chose an IKO Mach One single layer bituminous system incorporating a site specific cut-to-fall system. This project was a complex roof replacement system with multi-trades required for specialist operations.

Delivering a large ISO Class 7 clean room for a specialist package production facilityThe Puracore® clean room system was selected by installer NGS Cleanroom Solutions for an expansion project at a specialist packaging production facility in Belgium.

Nuway Tuftiguard Classic has recently been installed within a modern office building in Dublin, by the expert installers from Andrew Scollan Matting Systems.Cut into a unique shaped matwell, the classic grey and aluminium aesthetic of Nuway Tuftiguard Classic was chosen to complete the first impression for visitors entering the building, whilst also providing outstanding dirt and moisture retention. As a result, this will reduce the number of accidental slips or falls and protect interior floor finishes.

Set on the former site of a pub and a fish and chip shop, the stunning new Clifftown Shore residential development has breathed new life into the Western Esplanade in Southend-on-Sea in Essex. The development boasts a stunning location close to both the seafront and the nearby Conservation Area, which encompasses some of the coastal city’s most celebrated local architecture including the 1912 built Cliff Lift funicular railway. In addition to the 51 luxury one, two and three bedroomed apartments, the development also features a ground floor restaurant and cocktail bar and a host of aluminium fenestration systems.Taking inspiration from the Art Deco style of the neighbouring buildings and the beauty of the natural landscape, the undulating ‘waves’ of the white concrete framed building have been further accentuated by the curved installation and slim sightlines of Senior’s thermally-efficient SF52 aluminium curtain wall system.The stunning views from the individual apartments have been framed using Senior’s patented PURe® tilt and turn aluminium windows, with PURe® SLIDE aluminium doors providing access to the outdoor terraces. The thermal efficiency achieved by Senior’s PURe® aluminium system has been further enhanced with the use of energy-efficient triple glazing.The main entrance to the development features Senior’s aluminium PURe® Commercial Doors to provide safe and secure access. The installation of aluminium brise soleil, also powder-coated to match the aluminium windows, is both an attractive and practical feature, and will provide solar shading and protection against solar gain.Designed by LAP Architects and built by Cura Construction, all of Senior’s aluminium fenestration solutions were fabricated and installed by supply chain partner Glass & General.

Triton Systems approved contractor, British Damp Proofing, installed products supplied by Triton Systems to waterproof two lift shafts in a development of 25 dwellings. Triton Bentonite Membrane was used to waterproof the lift slab base and kicker, which were poured using concrete made waterproof with Triton TT Admix. Triton's Adcor waterbar was then installed on to the kicker.

Ogura Ward is one of 6 wards that makes up Chapters House, the mental health facility in Goodmayes Hospital, Ilford. Bushboard supplied high risk healthcare units – healthcare boxed out units with a rigid aluminium frame and panel system – specifically designed for safe ensuites and communal wet rooms in a high security environment. Anti-ligature sanitaryware, crafted from high impact resistant, anti-shatter moulded resin, was pre-plumbed to the units ensuring the safest possible environment.

Aurora is a first-class, highly sustainable office building in the heart of the city of Bristol and one of the greenest offices outside London and among only six in the UK to achieve a special BREEAM 2014 Outstanding Environmental Award for its sustainability credentials. Aurora, which provides 95,000 square foot of Grade A office space on the Floating Harbour, also achieved LEED ‘Gold Standard’ and is currently the only building in Bristol to exceed BCO design guide criteria.The aim of the design was to provide a space that is efficient, offers maximum natural daylight and promotes health, wellbeing and productivity amongst users. To achieve this inspiring working environment Lusso provided and installed the glazed partitions to create a stunning glass atrium within the 7-storey building. This was a challenging design which involved close collaboration between Lusso, Bush Consultancy, and Willmott Dixon to create a system where the framework floated off the slab edge. The structural complexity of this atria required a bespoke solution, which involved close collaboration with the architects from conception.The Lusso 25M single glazed framed system was used within the interior of the building which allows the maximum amount of daylight possible uniformly spread throughout the interior making Aurora, arguably, one of the best office space Bristol currently has to offer.

In preparation for the 2012 Olympics, where over 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries competed in London, Zaun developed a walkway system that would enable technicians to work safely at height to install fencing as well as attach CCTV and security enhancements to the highest parts of the fencing.Project ChallengesThe project required a range of unique and innovative solutions because of the varied challenges that were in play. The system needed to adhere to strict health and safety regulations, especially as working at heights has many potential dangers, and worker safety is a huge priority. We needed to create a cost-effective solution that installers could use in various venues and areas.We also needed to ensure that this walkway system did not damage the 358 mesh. The walkway also needed to facilitate the repair and installation of Perimeter Intrusion Detection (PID) and pulse-monitored electric fencing systems and razor wire. As such, it was essential that installers could easily and safely access materials, equipment and tools.Biggest Sporting Event In The WorldAs the Olympics is one of the biggest events in the world, global attention was on London and the various venues needed to be as secure as possible. From camera operators and athletes to volunteers and security personnel, the huge number of people involved in the Olympics meant that the security team needed to be able to see as much as possible at all times. To do this, it was best to put the security monitoring equipment along the fence line to survey the whole area and reduce the requirement for additional civils for CCTV cameras. Security measures during big events like the Olympics need to be incredibly stringent. The installation of these surveillance and security measures is of utmost importance to the security of the entire event.Innovative Walkway SystemZaun designed and manufactured a unique walkway system that allowed installers to work at heights safely without damaging the mesh fencing. Our innovative system was designed specifically to support the installation and maintenance of 358 security mesh fencing, CCTV cameras and electric fencing at the top of the fence line. We created an innovative walkway solution that easily attached to 358 mesh so technicians could check and access the security measures whilst safely working at height.
