The Warwick School Makeover Project

The Warwick School Makeover Project

Helmsman

The Warwick School is undergoing a major transformation. It has a brand new school building, and as of September 2021, it will have a brand new logo, uniform and name, Carrington School. Kerry, the headteacher, talks about the old buildings in Surrey Live, “they were dilapidated. They were dark, small, in some places the heating didn’t work properly. They had just run out of steam, and over the years of thousands of students going through them, they needed some care and attention.” The new teaching block is made up of 22 classrooms, a dining space, a social area for students to relax in and a sports hall. This makeover and expansion have helped the school to increase its GCSE range. The new name derives from Richard Carrington, an astronomer who built Redhill Observatory in 1852. It was there that he carried out pioneering investigations on solar flares and devised a system for numbering complete rotations of the sun, still in use today. Some of the secondary school students live in Redhill streets which carry his name.Helmsman is extremely happy to have manufactured, supplied and installed laminate school lockers. These are in the new building over two floors. The four-compartment lockers have provided storage for 157 students. These laminate school lockers have sloping tops and end panels to keep the lockers secure from vandalism and to keep them clean. During the install, these lockers were bolted together side by side and to the walls for safety purposes. We used Abet Laminati for the doors. The school chose beautiful colours of aubergine, tones of grey and others colours to make these lockers stand out and to match the modern feel around the building.Installation of standard school lockers of 1775 height by 300 widths and 450 depths with the standard swivel locks decorate the new building. Swivel locks have two functions: Locking with a padlock, and it can also be used as a handle to open/close the locker. Each compartment has an oval laminated number plate. These lockers will provide long-lasting durability for the transformed secondary school.Helmsman is the leading manufacturer of a complete range of lockers and cubicles in the UK and a specialist in providing solutions across different sectors from leisure, healthcare and education through to commercial, retail, construction and industrial. With a dedicated and experienced in-house design team supported by its on-site factory, the company produces high-quality lockers manufactured for each project.

Creating caption stands for Beaulieu Museum using RecoStakes

Creating caption stands for Beaulieu Museum using RecoStakes

GCL Products Ltd

Providing relevant information in a short, concise and easy-to-read way is vital for museums and events when displaying items such as sculptures, historic artefacts or displays. This is why ensuring you create the perfect caption in front of your display is of the utmost importance to provide all of the relevant information without visitors losing interest or missing the caption completely.About The ProjectThis case study highlights the application of RecoStakes at Beaulieu Museum for their Sculpture at Beaulieu 2023 event. This event showcases the remarkable work of over 57 renowned sculptors and runs from June 17th to September 24th. Beaulieu Museum aimed to provide their visitors with perfectly positioned sculpture captions and sought an attractive, durable and long-lasting solution."We hold a sculpture exhibition every other year at Beaulieu, here in the New Forest. Whilst Beaulieu is best known for the world-famous National Motor Museum, it is also the home of Palace House, the Montagu family's ancestral home. The exhibition features 300 sculptures in Palace House and throughout its grounds and gardens.""We wanted to enhance the exhibition this year with captions for each of the sculptures, displaying the sculpture name, artist and a QR code taking the visiting through to a dedicated webpage with more information. The outdoor captions needed to be at a height and angle that made it easy for the visitor to read. We considered using wood, but from experience these haven't lasted well from year to year. Metal posts were too expensive.""One of the team then came across GCL Products and your RecoStake and thought with some adaptation that they could work. We bought a couple of samples of the grey 60cm stake and mocked up a caption by chop sawing a 45-degree angle on the top of the post and mounting with two screws a backboard onto the post. We then printed each caption on a black die-bond board and stuck it to the caption post." - Rachael at Beaulieu Enterprises LtdWhat Are RecoStakes?RecoStakes, part of our lawn edging fixings collection, are made entirely from recycled plastic waste generated by consumers. These premium fixings are meticulously designed and crafted to be used alongside RecoEdge edging rolls. They offer robust, durable, weatherproof, and easy-to-install solutions for creating attractive separations between different landscaped areas. The unique attributes of RecoStakes, derived from their use of recycled plastic waste, made them an ideal choice for Beaulieu Museum and their sculpture caption stands. The 600mm RecoStakes provided the museum with sturdy and reliable stands at the desired height. Moreover, they can be reused for future events, thereby reducing costs. Conclusion"With these tests being a success, we installed circa 200 of these posts in the final days of installation, and they are looking great and lasting well. We are confident given the materials they are made from that they will last for several exhibitions to come." - Rachael at Beaulieu Enterprises LtdWe are thrilled to witness the successful and innovative implementation of RecoStakes at Beaulieu Museum. Our thanks go to Rachael and the team for selecting our recycled plastic stakes to create captivating captions and for sharing photos of their remarkable event. We are confident it will be a resounding success. If you have any enquiries regarding our product range, please don't hesitate to contact us. Sounding Out 1950’s design

Sounding Out 1950’s design

Troldtekt A/S

An intriguing new Milan styled Italian café has opened on Essex Road, Islington designed by well-known Italian studio Vudafieri-Saverino Partners. The 240 sqm ‘Latteria’ is inspired by Milanese culture and style with a warm and informal atmosphere in white and red. This is complemented by Troldtekt wood wool panels on the ceiling painted white to blend in and used to soften the acoustics and reduce background noise. Troldtekt panels are frequently used in this kind of open plan environment to combat noise generated by the kitchen machinery, staff and customers which is exacerbated by bouncing off the hard surfaces. This is particularly true in this project where the design harks back to the 1950’s and features an open-plan kitchen coupled with hard surface lacquers and laminates, polished and satin-finished steel, tiled walls and marble floors. Troldtekt’s acoustic panels absorb both direct and reverberated sound. They help to strike the balance between a lively and welcoming environment and an experience where the venue is uncomfortably loud. This is important because customers’ comfort and a willingness to spend time and money is decreased in a noisy environment. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. This high performance is recognised by their Cradle to Cradle certification at Silver level. Available in various sizes and in four grades from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour. Samples, case studies and technical information are easily sourced from tel 01978 664255 or visit www.troldtekt.co.uk.

Wakefield District Council are a modern thinking local authority with a clear set of defined ideals to suit their tenants’ priorities. They aim to accomplish a strict performance standard above the government’s ‘decent homes’ scheme. The Government standard was set in 2000 and states that ‘all social housing should meet a set standard of decency’.As part of this scheme, Wakefield District Council determined that Mustang® Aluminium Seamless Guttering was the best choice to replace the existing plastic guttering on over 500 properties in their re-roofing and new build programme. The council chose Mustang® because it is a high-quality aluminium gutter which is durable and robust but requires minimal maintenance, as the ideal solution. The system is far superior to plastic, which tends to fail after a few years, causing callouts for the council’s maintenance team.Mustang® Aluminium Seamless Guttering is made from recycled aluminium but can also be recycled once it has reached the end of its useful life span, which is more than 30 years. There is no waste, as it is roll formed on-site to the exact dimensions of the building, in lengths of up to 30 metres, with no joints, reducing future maintenance costs and callouts. The Mustang® Seamless Gutter system is the only British Board of Agrément (BBA) approved system.

Canadian hospital chooses Altro for new MRI suiteIssueThe Centre Hospitalier Hôtel-Dieu D’Amos short-term hospital in Quebec, is part of the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of Abitibi-Temiscamingue. The hospital is a designated regional trauma centre and its main regional vocations are orthopaedics and vascular, plastic and maxilo-facial surgery.Since 2001, the region had an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) service via a mobile unit that moved from centre to centre, that reached the end of its useful life a few years ago. In 2021, the hospital became the home to the region’s first fixed MRI scanner.ApproachMaterials in the room must not interfere with the powerful electromagnets, while also being aesthetically pleasing, as the procedures performed could be quite stressful for many patients. As the region’s only fixed MRI, capable of performing 6,000 exams per year, this project required protective wall cladding with superior and long-lasting durability. Materials had to be non-porous, hygienic and easy-to-clean. Due to frequent wheelchair and stretcher traffic, a high impact-resistant surface was also a very important criterion.SolutionMLS Architects selected Altro Whiterock wall designs. The hospital was familiar with Altro Whiterock, having used it in other areas of the hospital. They especially liked that Altro Whiterock wall designs combine the durability, hygiene and resilience of Altro Whiterock wall cladding, with natural looking patterns. These helped enormously with the warm and comforting ambiance that they desired. The Altro walls system easily replaces the typical laminated particle board typically used in applications such as this, all while offering a more durable surface finish and a longer lasting product guarantee. Altro Whiterock Satins in Mint was used in the bathroom and changing area.

Reducing noise break-in issue on new school roof, Chester

Reducing noise break-in issue on new school roof, Chester

Hush Acoustics

Hush Acoustics provided an effective solution to ‘noise break-in’ at a newly built primary school in Chester to ensure the internal acoustic environment was supportive of learning goals. The Huntington Primary school was designed by Cheshire West and Chester Council to cater for 420 primary age pupils and a 26-provision nursery. The former primary schools it replaced had a capacity of 120 children, but to cope with the demand of 1,200 new houses being built nearby on the former Saighton Army camp, the decision was made to build a new school to meet the requirements. An acoustic concern highlighted was ‘noise break in’ which is caused by issues such as the sound of rain falling onto the roof, which in turn would detract from the learning environment. In order to resolve this potential issue and to guarantee the children a healthy setting free from noise disturbance, we specified our Hush 10kg Barrier Mat to be installed in the roof of the building.Hush Barrier Mat is a vinyl sound barrier mat loaded with naturally occurring minerals. The product is free of lead, unrefined aromatic oils and bitumen. Designed to improve the sound insulation of existing panels of metal, wood, plastic etc., at all frequencies. The mat is normally fixed in intimate contact with the original panel. Hush barriers are particularly effective in overcoming coincidence dip resonance found in stiff lightweight composites such as plywood sheets and hollow core panels.Working alongside Kier, were Delta Group, who we supplied with 1100 sheets of our Hush 10 kg Barrier Mat. They then applied this to the roof of the school in 3x layers, to give a mass of 30 kg/m2 and improving acoustic performance across all frequencies.
