Over 1,200m² of Protan SE 1.2mm PVC single-ply membrane was installed in the Protan Vacuum roof system at Butlins Splashworld, Skegness. The roof system required no mechanical restraint or adhesives (except for around the roof perimeter and penetrations), as it relies upon the wind to keep the membrane in place with the help of Protan vacuum vents installed at locations designed by Protan's Technical Services Department. William Bird of Protan partner roofing contractor, Roofdec Ltd, commented, "Protan's vacuum roof system is quicker to install than conventional fully-adhered or mechanically-fixed systems."

Green Roof Extensive, Leeds Skelton Lake Services, UK

ABG

Despite the challenges posed by completing construction and opening during the first lockdown, the new Skelton Lake Motorway Services project opened in March 2020 as planned, providing essential services to hauliers and key workers travelling during the start of the pandemic. The project incorporates an extensive green roof build-up to minimise the visual and physical impacts of the development on the surrounding country park and to enhance the biodiversity of the project. The wildflower green roof design provides multiple environmental benefits; including provision of a new habitat for local insect and bird life, helping to lower the site’s carbon emissions by absorbing heat emitted from the building into the cooler roof surface - reducing the air conditioning demand in the summer months. The green roof build-up also provides a level of insulation against heat loss in winter.

The Elms

The Elms

Forterra Building Products

The ChallengeThe village of Ewerby sits within the heart of the Lincolnshire Fens, amidst a heavy farming community highlighted and punctuated by the local architecture.Historically, Lincolnshire villages produced their own, indigenous facing bricks from brick pits, and most farm buildings and tied cottages within this community are constructed from Ewerby Yellow facing brick. Together with local Ancaster limestone and handcrafted clay pantiles, this forms the pallet of materials that are considered indicative of the local vernacular architecture. As such, careful consideration needed to be given to the choice of materials used in building The Elms. The SolutionCombining existing detailing and colourings gave architects D.B. Lawrence Associates a strong initial concept for their first stage design process. Sourcing bricks and materials that blend with their surroundings can be challenging, but they were successful in achieving this for The Elms.A yellow stock brick sourced from Forterra was an important part of the concept. The brick was used alongside the use of local Lincolnshire limestone quarried seven miles away at Ancaster. Handmade clay pantiles were sourced to match existing roof tiles. The brickwork was constructed in English Bond to achieve the desired aesthetic and reflect the existing surrounding outbuildings.Complementary Stone quoins, cills and heads together with dog-tooth oversailing courses to the eaves and verges were also used. The brick chosen was Ardleigh Yellow Stock Brick from Ecostock. Ecostock is the most sustainable stock brick available in the UK. It is a high quality facing brick with recycled content. The range carries BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing certification. The BenefitsThe overall intention of the dwelling is to replicate a barn, and careful thought and detailing to the large openings have helped to create the desired effect. When approaching the village of Ewerby from Thorpe, the barn gives the impression of having been there for years, not months. The build has successfully fulfilled the requirements of the planners, and the client has contributed an inspiring development worthy of the village.

Manchester Victoria - Residential Balconies

Manchester Victoria - Residential Balconies

RYNO

Developed as a great space to live in one of Manchester's best-connected locations, close to the city's shops, restaurants & bars, and next to Manchester Victoria train station, the project comprised two 20 and 25-storey residential towers, which delivered 520 new homes. The architect Sheppard Robson, main contractor VINCI Construction, and installer Deckbuilders, all came together to deliver a great project, that is part of a gateway into the city, featuring fantastic-looking balconies, which we were very happy to secure against the forces of nature: namely wind-uplift.There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to mitigating the effects of negative pressure on balconies and terraces in high-rise buildings, and in this particular case, we had to fix the paving down to the main structure of the building mechanically, to de-risk against the impact of up to -2.68kPa of suction on the roof.To account for cost and time constraints, the system we used to secure the balconies against wind-uplift was the TerraSmart™ Pedestal system with the addition of a visual wind-uplift mechanical fixing. The tiles were mechanically restrained to the pedestals which, in turn, were mechanically fixed to the concrete deck of the balconies. And the outcome? Balconies secured, the project de-risked against wind-uplift, and the beautiful Quadro Argento Tiles (600x1200x20mm) safely in place for all residents to experience and enjoy. Listen to what our specification manager had to say.If you are specifying a project and want to know how you can mitigate the effects wind-uplift or the impact that occurs as a result of urban canyons, we can help.

Staggering 70’S Style Home Reinvigorates The Past Using Glazing Vision’s Very Own Flushglaze, Pitchglaze And Wall Abutted Rooflights

Staggering 70’S Style Home Reinvigorates The Past Using Glazing Vision’s Very Own Flushglaze, Pitchglaze And Wall Abutted Rooflights

Glazing Vision Ltd

Utilising several innovative Glazing Vision rooflight products combined with some insightful architectural design detail from Chiles Evans & Care Architects, along with bespoke high specification finishing from Terry Huggett Developments, this retro-modern home is simply stunning, and even featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs. The 1970’s were a revolutionary period of acceptance and moving forward as a society, with many important social movements being founded in this decorated time. Along with this, the 70’s also had a huge influence on the interior and exterior of buildings all over the world. 70’s vogue has also had a heavy effect on modern interior and exterior design. Ranging from complex designs of wallpapers, to simple yet effective patterns on rugs, retro designs are becoming more and more popular in present times.Solidifying this proposal is Ravine House, a retro-contemporary build where Glazing Vision, Chiles Evans & Care Architects (CE & C Architects) and Terry Huggett Developments have collaborated together demonstrating the enduring quality of 70’s design. The original house, built in 1967, adopted a mid-century American exterior; with large windows looking out at the surrounding gardens that were framed by wide eaves and a low-profile roof. Taking inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, and other famous Architects from the mid-20th century, the house showcases a real ‘wow factor’. As conversations with the homeowner quickly progressed it became apparent how special this home truly was.The project was separated into three parts. Two stock sized Flushglaze Fixed Rooflights were the first port of call for the homeowner and the architect. It was imperative that any changes made to the original exterior of the house did not impact the simplicity of the roof lines, therefore the Fixed Flushglaze Rooflights were selected. The double pitched roof meant that it was not possible to set the rooflight into the roof pane without compromising the water-proof integrity of the roofing. However, the Flushglaze’s simple frame means that although they sit proud of the roof, they remain visually unobtrusive. The standard Flushglaze Fixed Rooflight is a very popular item in our wide range of products, with a minimum span and width of 400mm and ranging to 4200mm subject to area m2 limitations. In this case, the Flushglaze Fixed Rooflights were both 1200mmx 900mm. With a frame colour of RAL 7015 (Slate Grey), they bring a simple yet highly effective essence to the property. Deciding to purchase a stock size Rooflight, rather than a bespoke size can be a much more cost-effective option. The second part involved a singular stock sized Pitchglaze Roof Window. Adopting our pioneering ‘frameless’ design ethos, once installed, this product provides the building occupants sky only views through the aperture, something not usually found with a traditional roof window without requiring an upstand. As a roof window it is UKCA and CE marked and designed to be installed in pitched tiled roof applications flush with the tiling line and to be used at roof pitches between 15° and 60° and comprising of Qualicoat approved polyester powder coated aluminium framework. The Pitchglaze can also be supplied in either landscape or portrait orientations. In this case, the Roof window sat at a 22° angle with “vision area” dimensions 1000mm x 3000mm.The third part of the project consisted of a solitary Triple Glazed Flushglaze Rooflight, with three Wall Abutments. The homeowner opted to go “made to order” for this luxurious item, with a span of 1205mm x 2825mm. The Wall Abutment detail is part of the Flushglaze framework and is secured using suitable fixings, that depend on the structure being used. The Flushglaze range of Rooflights have been independently performance tested and approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) and are also classified by The Official Police security initiative, Secured by Design and tested to LPS2081/1 with certification by the Loss Prevention Certification Board. This helps to enhance resistance to opportunist intruders attempting ‘stealth’ attacks to gain entry, which are often carried out in residential areas.‘For me, this project is simply a once in a lifetime opportunity and I enjoyed every minute of it’ Terry Huggett, Terry Huggett Developments. The project brings with it a unique element of family. With the homeowner inheriting the house from his parents – Terry Huggett cites that his love for mid-century American architecture stemmed from family holidays to places like California, and other cities and states in western America. This connection with the project for both Architect and Contractor, along with their personal chemistry is obvious, as is the care and precision of the build exhibited everywhere within the residence! The home also boasts many different structural qualities that distinguish it from other houses up and down the country. From a heated driveway to a Borehole that provides ‘Evian quality’ water from tap, the home showcases many unique and desired aspects.Overall, the project took approximately three years to be completed. Now, Ravine House is gaining publicity up and down the country and has been nominated for various RIBA awards. It is visually clear that the home is something truly special that simply defines quality and displays an incredibly high level of Architectural and Contractual ability.

Roofs with a view: slate used on the view development

Cupa Pizarras

CUPA 9 slates have been specified as part of a modern luxury housing development in Yorkshire. The company’s natural Spanish slates were chosen on account of their aesthetic value, long-term durability and competitive pricing.  Set amongst the foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds and with panoramic views of the Humber Estuary, ‘The View’ in Swanland is a luxury 14 house development, which has been led by main developer, Church Gate Homes. The high-end collection of properties has been delivered using premium building solutions, including CUPA PIZARRAS H9, with each property featuring around 10,000 individual slates. Excelling in terms of aesthetics and long-lasting performance, natural roofing slates are capable of enduring extreme temperatures, are fire-resistant and unaffected by UV light. Incredibly durable, solutions manufactured from slate can offer a lifecycle of over 100 years. Additionally, the natural make up of the material ensures that it is also the most sustainable roofing option on the market. Specifically, CUPA 9 is a grey slate with a very smooth surface and is taken from one of CUPA PIZARRAS’ own quarries in Riofrío de Aliste in Northern Spain. With its traditional beauty, the natural slate is ideal for use across heritage projects. However, the stylish aesthetic of the material also lends itself equally well to modern developments, such as ‘The View’ where it can be used to create sleek roof designs. Speaking on the project, Calum Cowham, Marketing Manager at Burton Roofing Merchants Ltd commented: “The project team needed a roofing solution that both looked and performed perfectly. With the CUPA 9 slates that’s exactly what they got. What’s more, the company’s natural slate product range is available at a highly competitive price point, which owes a lot to CUPA PIZARRAS’ efficient and effective production methods.” Martin Sutton, Operations Manager at Church Gate Homes commented: “When working on high-value properties, it is important to offer customers products, which combine durability and aesthetic value. This is exactly what CUPA PIZARRAS slates allowed us to do at ‘The View’. The company’s natural products perfectly suited the prestigious nature of the site.” As well as offering quality slate solutions, the CUPA PIZARRAS specialists were also on hand to assist the installation team at Church Gate Homes with specific advice on how to fit the slates in line with all relevant standards and requirements. Similarly, the installation team benefitted from the onsite support of leading roofing merchant, Burton Roofing Merchants Ltd. Burton Roofing’s team helped to ensure products were safely delivered to site when required and provided further technical assistance where necessary. “The roofing installation at ‘The View’ was very straightforward and the finished results look great,” commented Martin. “The CUPA PIZARRAS slates have provided a clean and tidy appearance, which fits well across all of the properties. What’s more, we were able to carry out the installation with very little waste, which further bolstered the product’s cost-effective and environmental credentials.” To this end, natural slate solutions also have the added benefit of requiring no chemical or heat treatments that need gas during their production. To ensure even greater environmental performance, CUPA PIZARRAS also endeavours to recycle all of its processing water via a closed circuit, and works to restore exhausted quarries by hydroseeding native plants and ensuring the natural recovery of the local flora and fauna. CUPA PIZARRAS has also been recognised and certified by the Carbon Trust as a carbon neutral company. This recognition highlights the company’s comprehensive effort in sustainability and makes it the first slate production company to achieve carbon neutrality within its operations. All properties at ‘The View’ were sold prior to the commencement of the development. Work at the site continues to progress with the project team working to complete the bespoke designs of its individual customers.
