A community space in the heart of central London has been completely transformed and by 6a architects. The new building, incorporating an old basement gymnasium, is home to Holborn Community Association, has a 100-year history which has been sensitively referenced in artwork created by artist Caragh Thuring on the façade of the building. What was solely an old basement gymnasium has been rebuilt as a light-filled, naturally ventilated, low energy space, extending upwards with two new public-facing floors. 6a architects specified Junckers solid Oak Harmony Driftwood Grey two-strip flooring, a pale shade of grey. Suitable for multi-purpose use, the sprung floor fitted in the gym as well as in the club rooms, will enable the community centre to maximise earnings through hires, being able to offer a safe space for everything from various sports to arts and social events. Said Stephanie Macdonald of 6a architects: “The floor looks fantastic and really unusual, a beautiful warmth of timber and colour for the gym and the clubrooms which is going to allow them to be used equally well for hires and events - a really beautiful set of spaces for community use”. Throughout the building, an emphasis on pale, light-reflecting colours and materials minimises reliance on artificial lighting. The light-coloured Junckers Driftwood Grey Oak provides the centre with a durable floor which helps maximise natural light levels. It can be sanded and refinished up to ten times without loss of performance and will serve the centre well for 60 years plus. Junckers floors carry the Danish Indoor Climate Label, which is recognised by BREEAM. Having undergone extensive degassing and odour testing to ensure there are no harmful chemicals, a Junckers floor will help maintain a healthy indoor climate. Stirling Prize nominated 6a architects worked closely with Thuring whose artwork features throughout the architecture. For the etched glass façade which runs the width and height of the building Thuring drew on stories from the community and local area which are inscribed onto the glass alongside irregular mortar lines of the original brickwork. For the gymnasium, Thuring created a bespoke woven fabric, echoing the brickwork motif of the façade, which lines the acoustics panels on the upper walls. The flooring contractor was Junckers Approved Contractor Hutchison Flooring. 

The new Faculty of Arts building at University of Warwick designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios brings the departments of the Arts and Humanities faculties under a single roof for the first time. The light-filled, timber-lined space is formed around and imposing internal staircase clad in Junckers’ solid ash flooring.The stair rises from a base of amphitheatre seating andrises through the building connecting teaching, social learning, public exhibition, and departmental spaces throughout which all branch off the central staircase. Entirely clad in Junckers’ solid ash, the central stair forms the main route through the building’s open, inviting, and flexible spaces. “The stair provides a space for daily informal meeting as well as a place for events and occasions such as documentary filming, graduation photographs and whole faculty celebrations. The use of natural timber, combined with natural light brings a warmth and a sense of timelessness to the space.”David Harris, Associate, Feilden Clegg Bradley StudiosJunckers’ solid ash has excellent strength properties and makes a hard-wearing, long-lasting floor. Often used in contemporary interiors, ash flooring adds natural warmth and character which can provide a good balance to clean lines and hard surfaces. The unique grain structure of ash makes it a characterful floor, similar in pattern to oak but with its own distinct colour tones. With its capacity to reflect an abundance of natural light, it is an ideal flooring choice for the project.The flooring contractor was Capital Floors Ltd. 

When Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace planned a London venue for its roller-skating experience, it needed a durable, sprung hardwood floor that could withstand the heavy traffic of a busy roller-skating rink. The choice fell on Junckers SylvaSport beech flooring, a trusted floor system suitable for a multitude of activities. Working closely with the designers 93ft, the experienced team at Junckers’ approved flooring contractor Hutchison Flooring devised the optimal layout and choice of flooring system for the best roller-skating performance possible. A meticulous installation plan which encompassed working alongside all trades on site was formulated and consequently followed to the letter in order to bring the project in on time and budget. The building for the new venue is a Grade II listed former power station, which meant there were restrictions on fixing to the original fabric of the building. The brief was that no alterations to the substrate were allowed, nor could the floor be fixed down, the entire flooring system had to be floating. The existing surface to build the floor from was a concrete substrate that was not completely level. To overcome the problem, Hutchison Flooring used a low-level New Era cradle and batten system from Junckers, which provided a laser-perfect level floor surface. Hutchison Flooring lay a polythene membrane with a 150mm overlap and taped joints to ensure sufficient vapour barrier followed by the cradle which involved carefully packing to the exact tolerances for every sprung cradle to ensure a perfectly level and flat floor for the skating ring. 22mm battens where laid in the cradles, brick bond staggered to create a perfect and reliable bond to the floor when nailed onto the battens. Junckers SylvaSport beech flooring was laid using a compression nailer on every batten on every row and 0.4mm spacers were included on every row to allow the correct expansion within the floor. Inspiration for the interior came from the original Flipper’s venue run by Ian Ross in the late Seventies and early Eighties. The client brief was for an immersive roller-skating experience with world-class sound and lighting. Central to the state-of- the-art indoor rink was a jet-black floor, an element the client insisted on. The black surface amplifies the atmosphere by maximising the reflection of the overhead lights, LED screens and mirrored panels on the sides. Junckers black-stained beech SylvaSport flooring has the desired jet-black, matt finish to provide the perfect backdrop to Flipper’s logo which is placed in the centre of the rink. Specialist court marking company MJ Courtmarkers custom made CNC laser cut vinyl templates of the logo which was painted with Junckers’ HP Sportsline line marking paint before being overcoated with HP Sports lacquer. 

For this busy educational building with high footfall, the Unexpected Purpose modular carpet offers rich saturated colour and excellent wear performance. Its Comfort Lite cushion backing also provides additional sound absorbency, particularly important for the quiet study areas in this building. The LVT floor coverings provides the recreational areas with a hard wearing, practical solution and the perfect urban aesthetic.

We supplied Bear Wood in Bristol with over 17,000 ln/m of Gripsure Classic for their immersive boardwalk. This elevates visitors above the forest floor, putting them right in the heart of the forest. It gives panoramic views of the woodland and the unique species that live there. Bear Wood, set in 7.5 acres of ancient woodland, tells the story of British woodlands, taking visitors on a fascinating journey starting 10,000 years ago to the present day. The exhibition has re-introduced native species, which once roamed our woodlands. These include European brown bears, European grey wolves, Eurasian lynxes, and wolverines. Gripsure took a brief from the zoo and developed a specification to achieve: Longevity in a wet and damp woodland environment by providing boards treated to Sector Scheme 4 treatment classification (30 years) Certified FSC timber, ensuring materials are from sustainable sources and blend in with the natural woodland A low slip risk for the anticipated high volumes of visitors. This was achieved by using three non-slip inserts which have been tried and tested at other attractions Pushchair- and wheelchair-friendly surfaces achieved through a smooth profile to avoid discomfort. This is also easy to maintain. Non-slip decking boards cross-cut to the width of the boardwalk to minimise waste and speed up installation. Gripsure's Classic deck boards were supplied across a number of scheduled deliveries to Elmtree Garden Contractors. This meant they could keep to their construction programme and limit the amount of storage space required on site. "The great thing about using Gripsure boards, and Gripsure as a company, was that you can communicate with them and they delivered on time every time" - Director, Elm Tree Garden Contractors. As well as the large and impressive boardwalk, Gripsure Graphics were also supplied where custom-made infographic boards created bespoke time-hop sections. The imitation of roots around 'Steve the Tree' help tells the story of the UK's woodlands and the species and habitats within them. New for the 2022/23 academic year, Archwood House at Eagle Wharf for University of the Arts London offers contemporary student accommodation in a range of EGGER finishes.U717 ST9 Dakar Grey forms a neutral palette in the kitchens. Used in 18mm Eurodekor MFC, the handleless door format in mixed sizes could easily be achieved without excess labour or material waste. Matching edging completes the look.The units are complemented by EGGER worktops in F638 ST16 Chromix Silver in a 38mm postformed format, highlighting the contemporary design scheme with a stone like look and feel. Matching splashbacks are also used.In the bedrooms, a rustic look is added with H3332 ST10 Grey Nebraska Oak. Used in 18mm Eurodekor MFC, the material is an efficient and cost effective choice for case goods including shelving and storage.The project was designed by Nelson and Long. Fabrication was by Flawless Kitchens using EGGER 18mm Eurodekor MFC, ABS edging, 38mm postformed worktops and splashbacks from UK stock.

London-based architectural practice, WilkinsonEyre, has created an undergraduate village for the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. The landscaped village of timber modular-housing pods, with communal amenities and a central social and learning hub, is based within the Dyson, Malmesbury campus in Wiltshire. As well as establishing a new style of student accommodation, the project breaks ground in design, master planning and precision engineering of truly modular prefabricated building technologies for rapid construction.

Scene 44 is a state of the art dance and performance studio in Marseille, devised and run by N+N Corsino, who are artists, choreographers and researchers. Nicole and Norbert Corsino are innovators in their filed, fusing choreography with the latest digital technology to create dance performances which are transposed to the virtual realm as interactive choreographic movements.Studio 44 is their specially designed stage dedicated to exploring the relationship between artistic creation, research and digital innovation. Our specialist floor and subfloor system were specified because of their quality and performance as well as the flexible construction height. 300m² Black Oak and 150m² Nordic Beech installed over UnoBat 62+.

750m2 Junckers solid hardwood flooring has been installed throughout the redeveloped The Higgins Bedford. The £5.8M project, funded in part by Bedford Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery fund, joined together three previously separate buildings into a new, fully renovated facility, which apart from the existing art gallery and museum includes space for temporary exhibitions, space for learning and activities, a café and a shop. Junckers wide board Oak Harmony floor serves as a unifying element to the interior and acts as an elegant backdrop to the collections and exhibits. Solid oak is easy to maintain and very hard-wearing, even in a high traffic area open to the public. Installed by Junckers’ Approved Contractor PICA Flooring, the floor at The Higgins is guaranteed for 25 years. 

Aluminium cladding that looks like real timber, quite simply put, but it is actually real timber. The well-developed landscaping area, which also serves as a central garden area, also includes a shopping centre with 150 stores and a cinema. It has a gallery space aligned with transparent oriental pools. These transparent pools, which form the centre of Next Level, illuminate the shopping centre with the sunlight breaking through the water, giving its guests a relaxing ambience. The 7500 sq. m of landscaping is a recipe for complete social togetherness. The public and private wellbeing have been transformed into an urban area. This also allows a diverse culture, entertainment, work and socialisation.This newly built-up area has also become a new living space for people adopting a modern lifestyle, where business and social life come together. Furthermore, Next Level is designed as a cutting edge mixed-use project of this area, it reflects the development of the region and this contemporary way of life has been well accepted by its new occupants.The mixed materials manufactured by Technowood is a testimony to the company. In Manhattan Loft gardens, they have a dry install system and are going to use the recommended system from Sika, then fit the floor fully bonded with our SW890 adhesive. Installation and site visits are part of our service. With large residential tower developments, there will normally be slabs for each floor. These will take at least two years to dry out completely. This means that unless the slabs have a DPM applied there will always be a chance of moisture affecting whatever is laid on the floor be it a cradle system or dry install underfloor heating system.

A beautiful timber frame house, made of Western Red Cedar based in Kings Langley. Kings Langley, Hertfordshire is the birthplace of Ovaltine, the soothing malt drink. The village is divided by the River Gade and endowed with a couple of beautiful lakes.It is here, at one of these lakes, that a charming timber garden house is fitted with beautiful wooden louvres. By Sunshield, in collaboration with Contrasol. We were delighted to assist the owners with custom made external louvres to provide the a much needed perfect solution to reduce glare. Our client is sensitive to light and needed an effective shading product to specifically reduce sunlight entering the internal space.Our client was looking for something to be able to control light as well as a solution to fully block out light at night. The windows are South facing; therefore the louvres were also perfect for shading purposes and heat reduction.The Sunshield team applied the popular 98W which is made from Western Red Cedar to compliment the overall building.

Accoya was selected as the ideal material to clad this Burleigh Brewery project in Australia. Burleigh Brewing began on 1 July 2006 and immediately set about pioneering the craft beer movement on the Gold Coast. Distributed by Britton Timbers, Accoya was chosen because the project called for a low maintenance, sustainable external cladding with a high-end appearance. Accoya was also ideal due to its natural blonde aesthetic, which was carefully selected to ensure the Brewery logo was as prominent and distinctive as possible. Roughly 4 m3 of Accoya was used with an Integrain coating.

Exterior Accoya cladding has been selected by the University of Minnesota for The Tashijan Bee Pollination Centre. Designed by Architects MSR, 8,000 square feet of Accoya Burn and Brushed Black, coated in Delta Millworks ebony SF, features on the siding of the building and was chosen due to its durability and sustainable properties. Plus, in keeping with the ecological mission of the build, Accoya was the perfect fit due to its green credentials – thereby; the building meets the National B3 Sustainability standards as well as State of Minnesota Sustainable Building 2030 requirements.

Accoya cladding was selected by contractor Jephsons for the new KFC restaurant in Stourbridge. Along with a new Costa and McDonalds, the £5million development is the latest venture by Guernsey-based Jumbuk Ltd. After performing well with respect to stability and retained aesthetics on a KFC concept design store over the past 18 months, Accoya was chosen for the project. Finished in a Sansin coating this Accoya cladding also offers a stunning aesthetic appearance. For this project Accoya was distributed by James Latham and installed by Protec Roofing.

Accoya was chosen for this external application as it met all of the stability and durability requirements for the projects cladding. Accoya was also selected because it is ideal for coating. The colour was achieved using two coatings; Woca external tinted Primer and Woca external oil Anthracite. The cladding was achieved by using three different cover-width boards (119 mm cover, 69 mm cover and 49mm cover) which were all 19 mm thick, these were then attached using a secret fix application with stainless steel screws.

Accoya was chosen as the project required a striking facade which complimented the existing traditional stone Temple Bank House. Accoya was also selected due to the fact it is low maintenance & provides warmth & natural textures. 15 mm planks were chosen for the cladding to ensure minimum wastage in the manufacturing making it as cost effective as possible. The client was very impressed with how well the cladding cloaks, shields and invites, addressing the road facing elevations and drawing the occupants around the building to its entrance which sits in relief.

The Garden State Hotel is an iconic building in Melbourne. Accoya was chosen for a feature wall in the balcony dining room – a VIP space that looks out over the rest of the venue. Charred Accoya was used for the feature wall to add to the secluded and private feeling of the venue. The Accoya cladding was lined with a polyurethane finish. Other sections of the feature wall were finished with Woca internal maintenance oil. Accoya was also chosen due to its incredible finish and its ability to adapt to the unique and fresh looks offered by modern architecture.

Designed and Manufactured by Simplicity Timber Solutions this curved folding sliding door system was crafted for an opening of 9 linear meters. This was designed to enable a 10 door leaf system to be effortlessly opened, plus it folds and slides in the same direction. To seamlessly bring the room together, Accoya was also used for the 16 sided hex decagon lantern light ceiling feature. Dimensional stability is key for large joinery installations such as this.

WMOR Architects completely redesigned the ground floor to include a flexible living area to open into the garden. Accoya was chosen as the ideal material for the extension because of it aesthetic appearance as well as its ability to provide better insulation than other materials. & the owners wanted to use the most sustainable material they could. The Accoya extension which houses the show piece kitchen will be left to weather naturally and match the pale grey flooring. This was specifically designed so that in the summer, when the sliding door completely opens, the interior & exterior space will merge seamlessly.

This home built by Wok Stehr and his team in Howick was designed by Daniel Marshall Architects. The home incorporates stunning Accoya windows and doors that are large and some are raking and meet at obtuse angles. Accoya with benefits of outstanding durability and stability is able to withstand such design, making it possible to meet the requirements of the build.

Van Leeuwen kozijnen had an easy decision to make when choosing the ideal material for their new office building, due to such positive past experience with Accoya. As well as the Accoya frames & doors that were produced in their own joinery workshop, 30 mm thick panels were also made to fill the space between the frames throughout this project. Accoya boards were selected for all the cladding. The cladding was then fixed with an invisible clip system. Thanks to Accoya’s superior dimensional stability, the cladding in the building will stay straight & aligned.

Accoya was specified by Hofland Architectenbureau for the cladding, windows and doors for this primary school located in Barneveld, Netherlands. Supplied by Boogaerdt Hout, an Accoya distributor the 38 x 45 mm Accoya cladding was selected because of its class 1 durability, stability and sustainability properties. Windows and doors were manufactured by VIOS van den Hondel, Driebruggen and the contractor was Van Driesten Bouw.

With the aim to encourage more participation in sport, Hackney Council has opened a new community facility, Britannia Leisure Centre. As part of a wider, mixed-use development in an inner-city environment, the different activity spaces were stacked vertically in a spatially efficient design. As part of the state-of-the-art facilities a six-court sports hall has been installed with Junckers solid hardwood area elastic sports flooring. The Beech SylvaKet floor with a Nordic finish was installed over Junckers’ UnoBat 45 undercarriage system to provide a high level of performance as well as a safe and responsive surface ideal for a multitude of sports. The pre-finished floor is easy to maintain, durable and resilient – perfect for a busy sports centre. Further facilities available to the local community include four squash courts, fitted with Junckers’ specialist SylvaSqaush Beech flooring. Britannia Leisure Centre by FaulknerBrowns, constructed by Morgan Sindall has won several awards including AJ100 Community Impact of the Year (2022) and the Delivering Social Value Award at the Building Awards (2021). 

City of London Academy Shoreditch Park by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios forms a part of The Britannia Project, regenerating a thriving London community with new facilities and amenities including new housing, a new school and community leisure facilities. Built to cater for the anticipated expanding population, the new development forms a harmonious addition to the existing neighbourhood with new, high-quality public spaces. The new secondary school for 900 local students plus a 200 student sixth form school had complex underground constraints to take into consideration in the design process, a challenge which informed every part of the building, including the choice of flooring and its installation in the school sports hall. Proposed Crossrail tunnels beneath the building meant the sports floor had to be able to cope with a much larger amount of structural movement than what would be considered normal for a building of this kind. Junckers’ technical department worked closely with the architect exploring a number of options to finally help them arrive at a solution which could accommodate an unusually large amount of structural movement and at the same time retain the sprung quality of the floor for sports and other activities. Junckers Approved Contractor V.A. Hutchison fitted Junckers 22mm solid Ash Champion over New Era battens with 125mm insulation between battens. Line markings for four badminton courts as well as basketball, netball and handball courts ensure the sports hall will serve the school and the wider community as a hub for multiple events and activities. The floor is area elastic and fully complies with EN 14904 class A4, a high-performance sprung floor which will serve the school and community for decades to come. A 22mm Junckers sports floor can be sanded and refinished up to ten times without losing performance, and with regular sandings in 12-year intervals, a lifespan of 60+ years as set out by the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge can easily be achieved. Funding for schools issued by the Department for Education is now dependent on fulfilling strict sustainability criteria. Junckers has independently verified certification to show its flooring fulfils these criteria, In addition to the sports hall, Junckers flooring was specified for the school’s main hall, which is used for drama and other activities. The original specification was for a vinyl floor, but as a more sustainable solution, Junckers’ 22mm Nordic Oak in the Classic grade was selected. V. A. Hutchison Flooring installed the oak floor on New Era battens with 125mm insulation, including an area of 91 m2 of extra battens for support in the main hall. Jo Gimenenz, Architect at FCBStudios added: “We have worked with Junckers for many of our projects, CoLASP being one of the most recent and they always provide an excellent technical service. Particularly so on this project where we had to overcome a complex structural movement joint detail in our ground floor Main Hall, due to proposed Crossrail tunnels beneath the building. A Junckers flooring system was also installed in our Sports Hall. For this space we opted again for a solid timber flooring in lieu of a vinyl topped raised floor as it was a more sustainable solution.” 

The 5 year, £500 million restoration of the London King’s Cross Station roof completed circa. 2012 contains a 150 metre free spanning roof flooding the concourse below with natural daylight - an architectural achievement created using BB/BB grade Riga Ply birch plywood in 9mm, 12mm and 18mm.

Accoya was chosen to help transform a late Victorian property based in London. Originally built as a warehouse, the property required major renovation to become a family home. The building was in such bad condition the windows & doors were rotten & required replacement. Accoya was selected for the windows & doors due to its durability & stability. Plus, the replacement joinery had to comply with the conservation area requirements. 10 new Accoya sash & casements windows & 5 new Accoya doors were installed. Since the installation the overall look of the street has dramatically improved.

Distributed by Britton Timbers, Accoya was selected for the louvres/external screening on the North Apartments, Blackwood street in Melbourne. Accoya was chosen due to its durability, stability and FSC certification. The 40 x 40 mm were coated using Woca external tinted Primer and an additional coating of Woca external Walnut oil. The louvers were then fixed from behind onto powder coated black material frames.

Instigated in 2015, the Royal Arena in Copenhagen is now complete. Specified by Danish Architecture firm 3XN, roughly 250 cubic metres of Accoya was used to create the entire façade. Accoya was selected for the fins due to its elegant aesthetic appearance which gives the building an eye-catching & bespoke style. The arena is able to seat 12,500 people with additional capacity for 15,000 standing. Accoya was also chosen due to its durability & worldwide environmental standards. 3XN are known for adhering to the principles of sustainable development, so Accoya was the ideal material for the project.

Named the Stavanger Boardwalk, the project comprises two bridges & paths, one is 45 metres & the other is 30 metres. The project was commissioned by the Stavanger region in 2011. Their task was to find a solution that would preserve as much of the natural surroundings & terrain as possible, while also creating an innovative & remarkable structure. For this project, the foundations were fixed into the seafloor, which is 45 metres long & was cladded with a geometrically patterned cover of Accoya, with recessed diagonal stripes to make it extra slip-resistant in colder periods when ice is likely.

Accoya was chosen for the heritage building No.9. Uncoated Accoya products were installed by the BS&R Group. Accoya was chosen for the sash windows & exterior millwork due to its ability to last 50 years above ground & the fact that it can be left to weather, requiring minimal maintenance. Accoya was also selected as its long-lasting even in the most extreme weather environments. BS&R were delighted to be involved with saving such a historical piece of heritage & were also happy to use Accoya as it’s a green building material.
