Laminate lockers at Melbourne Science Park

Laminate lockers at Melbourne Science Park

Helmsman

Melbourne Science Park is part of Bruntwood SciTech which covers 17 acres with nine buildings. Their aim is to contribute yearly towards the economy. Also, to help the regional science and tech sector to succeed in the future. Our team at Helmsman has manufactured and installed 57 three-compartment and 8 two-compartment laminate lockers. The laminate lockers were requested by the clients to be Wet Spec, which helps the material not to rust, peel, or crack under humidity. The measurements of the lockers were 1775mm high, 300mm wide, and 450mm deep. The bottom locker doors were wished to be dropped. The lockers' body was powder coated Jet Black, with the laminate door coated Neutral Medium Gray, provided by Fundermax. Our laminate lockers provide a modern, heavy-duty finish and are great to be used on a regular basis. The lockers were finished with oval laminate number plates above the nimbus digital combination in black made by Lowe & Fletcher. This can keep the employees and residents assured that their personal belongings are secure and untouched. As always, our installation team worked hard to provide the best finish to the project. It was great to work with SDC Builders Ltd and we would like to wish Melbourne Science Park great success in the future. If you have a similar project or want to know more about laminate lockers, give us a call a 01284 530 427.

Fulham Gasworks (King's Road Park)

RYNO

A high-profile development project in the heart of Fulham aimed at creating a new residential neighbourhood in and around a beautiful park (King's Road Park), by transforming a redundant gas works site into a brand new sustainable urban quarter. In one of London's most sought-after locations, King's Road Park is literally a stone's throw from King's Road and the River Thames. The project creates over 1,800 homes, restoring two Grade II listed buildings and provides 100,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, featuring bars, restaurants, and offices.RYNO were contacted late in the project by AYM, acting as sub-contractor for this Berkeley Group development, to remedy the combustible decking in the original specification, which was obviously not compliant with fire-safety regulations. The requirement was that all the decking be replaced with a non-combustible wood-grain finish. We worked directly with Berkeley Group to explore non-combustible finish options and put forward onr of our newer porcelain finishes that would match the overall aesthetic appeal of the project. We delivered various samples of finishes and when we deep-dived into the project, as part of our methodology, we determined that it was at risk of wind-uplift. Berkeley Group carried out a wind-uplift assessment, which we facilitated, and confirmed the risk, which we then helped mitigate by proposing kerfed porcelain tiles with our Hidden Wind Uplift fixing. We worked very closely with Berkeley Group throughout the project to address and resolve any challenges, while AYM did a fantastic job installing all the balconies and terraces with our kerfed porcelain and hidden wind-uplift fixing. This has been one of our largest projects to-date, a great success and a prime example of our hidden restraint in action. See if you can spot it.

Tobermore

The ChallengeModern paving was required to complement state-of-the-art offices Scott Brownrigg’s design aim was to attract the world’s most high-tech companies to the Science Park. The architecture, design and landscaping of Buildings 1 and 2 was key to setting the tone for the tech hotspot. Buildings 1 and 2 form a new gateway to the dedicated technology estate while collectively making up 210,000ft2 of commercial office space.  The two-building design spans four storeys tall and showcases a striking colonnade. The cladded feature columns provide an impressive new entrance to the park, while echoing the curve of the spine road. Buildings 1 and 2 offer a dedicated pedestrian and cycle area. The public realm space between the two buildings required extensive paving which complemented the state-of-the-art buildings. The client’s primary objective was to remove existing, dated buildings and replace them with state-of-the-art facilities for the scientific community. The master plan has sustainability and efficiency at the core of its design. The SolutionTobermore’s high quality granite aggregate paving accentuates the contemporary office scheme Tobermore supplied paving of exceptional quality to complement the state-of-the-art office hub. The public realm space between the two buildings features Tobermore’s granite aggregate paving in contemporary grey tones. The dedicated pedestrian and cycle area are paved with Braemar, Fusion and Hydropave Fusion which all feature a striking granite aggregate surface which adds to the ultra-modern scheme. Braemar offers a premium concrete paving product with aesthetic appeal of natural granite. It boasts a striking, contemporary look while being a more cost-effective and sustainable alternative to natural stone.  Fusion made a modern striking entrance to the Science Park. The area required a combination of permeable and impermeable paving. It would take a keen eye to spot where the standard block paving ends and permeable paving starts. Hydropave Fusion and Fusion was applied in permeable and non-permeable format which added continuity to the streetscape.  The new buildings achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. The facilities provide a much-needed innovation hub for scientists and graduates, and successfully generated income for Trinity College.

Twinfix Limited

The official opening of Stourton Park and Ride on 16 September 2021, marks the 150th anniversary of public transport in West Yorkshire. In 1871 a horse tram commenced between the city centre and Headingley. The horse soon gave way to electric trams, trolleybuses and petrol buses, the latter quickly being superseded by those with diesel engines. The £38.5 million public transport project situated in the Stourton area of Leeds, at junction 7 of the M621, was delivered as part of a wider scheme to help Leeds City Council’s aim of transforming the Leeds City Region into a net zero carbon economy by 2038.BAM Nuttall, appointed to develop the site, started detailed designs in January 2019. They approached Twinfix with a requirement for a free-standing mono-pitch canopy and Twinfix worked closely with them to design, manufacture and install a striking canopy spanning 73 square metres. The canopy comprises of the innovative Multi-Link-Panel NF (Non-Fragile) roof glazing system which combines a maintenance-free aluminium frame fitted with virtually unbreakable solid polycarbonate glazing. This innovative system meets the non-fragile requirements outlined in ACR[M]001:2019 and sits over Western Red Cedar roof cladding, aluminium framework and posts, powder-coated in RAL 9005 jet black. The finished canopy enhances the aesthetics of the site, while offering protection from the elements for its visitors.

Fixfast Ltd

Developed on what was previously the Strathclyde Police Headquarters, Holland Park is a residential complex with 4 towers ranging from 6 to 22 storeys in height, around a courtyard formation.ChallengeSpecialist building envelope company MetalTech Roofing & Cladding were contracted to secure the façade on this new development, with the task of fixing nearly 9,500m2 of façade to the external face of the buildings.SolutionMetalTech approached Fixfast and requested a technical façade calculation for the Fixfast façade support system, which we provided alongside technical advice. The Fixfast façade support system is a system for any application - including SPIDI® Max brackets: one bracket design means the system can be used in vertical or horizontal installation configurations and is engineered for both fixed and sliding points. Essentially, one bracket design means all challenges solved - simplifying material selection and on-site installation management. The unique ribbed bracket design offers superior strength, allowing systems to be engineered for heavier loads, or potentially fewer brackets per square metre for lightweight panels. With MetalTech needing to fix the façade simply but fast, Fixfast were able to work with them to get deliveries to site when they needed them, with the assurance of a versatile façade support system that works in a range of applications - wall cladding, soffits, or ceilings. "In addition to supplying an innovative support bracket for this contract, Fixfast also continued to provide their usual first-class service. Engineering and design services were available from the outset and technical support was gratefully accepted during the build to help overcome some difficult details. We were fortunate in being able to use the same SPIDI Max bracket for both façade and soffit support in both aluminium and stainless steel. This greatly helped to simplify our process from design through to install. And with the site being in a restricted, city centre location, timely and flexible deliveries were required - which Fixfast duly achieved."MetalTech Roofing & Cladding Ltd

Winchester Council has opened a new multi-functional sport and leisure centre to cater to activity needs of the local population. The new sport and leisure park by LA Architects provides state-of-the-art facilities for the community, including a 50m eight-lane swimming pool, a 20x10m teaching pool, a large fitness suite, two exercise studios, a spin studio, an eight-court multi-use sports hall, four squash courts, a café, and a climbing area. The large sports hall and squash courts have been fitted with Junckers solid wood sports flooring systems, offering a safe, high-performing, and long-lasting floor which fully complies with EN 14904 class A4. Junckers’ approved flooring contractor Courtcraft Ltd installed Junckers 22x129mm solid Maple flooring in the sports hall over the New Era UnoBAT undercarriage system; as well as SylvaSquash Beech Champion in the four squash courts. Junckers flooring is a product with a long-standing history of caring for the environment, an important consideration for the architect in the specification process. Said Mike Lawless of LA Architects: ‘When designing to change the face of sports and leisure facilities in the UK and create a place of quality everything matters. Every detail, material, and every specification matters. It is enormously important to consider quality in every part of the building; to seek out manufacturers who can work with us to deliv- er the quality and creativity that the UK sports and leisure industry must strive for.” Junckers’ floors hold independently verified sustainability accreditations to verify its environmental credentials, including EPDs, FSC®, PEFCTM, the Danish Indoor Climate Label, and an A+ BREEAM rating. Junckers’ sports floors are made in solid hardwood, one of the most durable surfaces available and virtually unbeatable in terms of life cycle costs. The floor has a very long lifespan and can be sanded and re-finished eight to ten times during its life. With 12-year intervals between sandings, a typical lifespan of 60 years will comfortably be exceeded. And, at the end of its long life, a Junckers floor can often be re-used or re-purposed or it will degrade naturally without adding to landfill sites. All Junckers sports floors meet the design guidance provided by Sport England and SportScotland.

Heated Lockers at the Innovation Hub, Production Park

Helmsman

Heated Lockers were the focus of Helmsman’s most recent project. We travelled up to South Kirby in Pontefract, Yorkshire to work alongside Triton Construction at the brand-new Innovation Hub at Production Park. Production Park is a unique support environment for the live events industry, uniting technology, creative spaces and education. Their newest venture is the brand-new Innovation Hub, with a large research studio with connected offices and teaching spaces. The new innovation hub features specialist equipment designed to support the live events industry as well as a business support programme focusing on assisting SMEs.In an area off the main entrance lobby, Helmsman installed a set of Wet Specification Heated Lockers. With a mix of 1, 2 and 4 compartments, these lockers are designed with a single or twin tube heater at the bottom of the locker, hidden within the locker stand, and perforations throughout to allow warm and/or damp air to circulate and escape the locker. Triton Construction requested a modern, heavy duty laminate finish for these heated lockers. The body of the lockers was manufactured from aluminium and powder coated in colour Ice, whilst we used Biocarbon’s Solid Grade Laminate in colour Elegant Grey for the locker doors, end panels and cladding. This laminate is a great choice as it is carbon neutral as well as being moisture resistant and easy to clean, perfect for a semi-public area such as this project. Our heated lockers can either come with a standard 3 pin power plug or can be available with a spur to wire into a fused switch. Triton construction requested a plug which was positioned on the end panel of the bank of lockers. We paired stainless steel numbers recessed into the doors with Lowe and Fletcher camlocks for a seamless finish to the lockers.  This option of lock is simple and cost effective, whilst also safe and secure. It was great to work with Triton Construction on this project and we look forward to hearing about the success of the Innovation Hub at Production Park in the future. If you have a similar project, or want to know more about our Heated Lockers, contact us today on 01284 530427.

The North Northamptonshire County Council approached Care Spaces to create a Changing Place facility at East Carlton Country Park due to a high number of disabled visitors. With limited space in the existing Visitor Centre, we installed a Care Capsule™, a modular Changing Place toilet designed offsite for easy transport and assembly. Facing access challenges, the Care Capsule™ had to be delivered in kit form and assembled on-site. Electrical and plumbing services were extended to the location. To minimize environmental impact, ground screws replaced concrete for stability without harming the natural surroundings. The customisability of the Care Capsule™ allowed the client to match the unit with the Visitor Centre's aesthetics, featuring a brick exterior and a steel security door. The unit met Changing Places standards, including Fibo® waterproof internal cladding. Care Spaces provided awareness training to park staff, and the client is pleased with the results, emphasizing the importance of accessible facilities for all visitors. Cllr Matthew Binley expressed delight, stating the facility at East Carlton Countryside Park ensures worry-free visits for everyone.

New improved bike wheeling ramp in Walthamstow

New improved bike wheeling ramp in Walthamstow

Cyclehoop

In 2016, we installed our new improved Bike Wheeling Ramp on the bridge across the River Lea at the bottom of Spring Hill at Springfield Park. This bridge sits exactly on the Hackney-Walthamstow border. It is a key thoroughfare for commuters on a daily basis, however, not everyone has such an easy job negotiating stairs particularly if you own a heavier bicycle with panniers or luggage. The challenge of this project was in the design of the bridge which was multi-level as well as curved. This problem was solved by the real ingenuity of the ramp which lay in its modular design. This comprised floor fixing brackets that adjust to the different angles of the slope. The flexible angle adjustment of the ramp allows installation into any pre-existing environment which is a big bonus when retrofitting cities with historical architecture. The Bike Wheeling Ramp has been specifically designed to improve bicycle access when travelling along multi-level routes, and allows to people who cycle to gently wheel their bike up or down without having to carry it or forcefully bump it along the stairs. This ramp also includes flip-up functionality allowing for easy cleaning underneath and preventing trapped rubbish or leaf litter building up. The length of the ramp can be ordered in made-to-measure sizes to ensure a truly bespoke solution.“As former project manager for the Wetlands to Wetlands route I am delighted to work with award-winning Cyclehoop on this initiative. This innovative wheel ramp will enable cyclists to access the beautiful surroundings of the Lea Valley Regional Park without lifting heavy bicycles up steep steps and help improve connections for visitors to London’s exciting new Wetlands Centres at Woodberry Downs and Walthamstow. The greenway marks the start of a 3km route that will connect the recently opened Woodberry Wetlands centre with the soon-to-be-open Walthamstow Wetlands centre. The wheel ramp will complement two recently completed public realm schemes at Newton Close and Clapton Common. The initial phase of the scheme was part-funded by Hackney Council and the Mayor of London’s Big Green Fund.” – Kevin Burke, former Senior Transport Planner for both Waltham Forest and Hackney
