Huber Car Parks Innovate with Petrarch PlanX

Architectural Panel Solutions

Project Cambridge, ARM Peterhouse Multi-Storey Car Park, United KingdomHuber, the name behind the UK’s most innovative car park designs, turned to Petrarch, our innovative reconstituted stone rainsceeen facade, to realise its new vision for Peterhouse multi-storey car park. The background‘HUBER was commissioned to erect this new multi-storey car park at 110 Fulbourne Road, in Peterhouse Technologies Park, Cambridge - part of the ARM Headquarters estate. With a total of 501 parking bays the facility eases the parking situation at the commercial estate.‘The façades of the structure are clad in Petrarch reconstituted stone rainscreen panels. These are reconstituted stone panels to render a visually stunning façade solution which simulates the colour and texture of natural stone.’ Huber Car ParksSales Director, Tom Walker, who had this to say about the project.‘I was really pleased to see our Petrarch reconstituted stone facade installed to a fantastically high standard, across both the original phase, some 5 years ago and the more recent extension, creating a seamless link between the two parts of the project. The spectacular design of the façade coupled with this high-quality installation has delivered a beautiful example of Petrarch applied in two very different yet equally stunning styles, expressing the characteristics of natural stone.’In terms of both the product and service Huber has commended the APS package and very succinctly yet precisely asserted! ‘Fantastic product and fantastic customer service.’Given that the second phase features new material, the client was super-impressed with how the old and new blend so well. Given the natural ageing qualities of Petrarch (emulating weathered stone), it makes it ideal in such instances.

FENCING TO CALM PATIENTS IN MHU

FENCING TO CALM PATIENTS IN MHU

Zaun Limited

For secure mental health units, the safeguarding of both their patients and the general public is paramount. Therefore, it is imperative that patients cannot leave the hospital grounds to ensure that they cannot threaten anyone or themselves. Therefore, secure, sturdy and reliable fencing is a necessity. However, to promote relaxation and recovery for anxious and agitated patients, it is necessary to maximise the capability of this fencing to ensure that it is restful rather than solely restrictive. So, how is it possible to ensure that high-security fencing can also be calming to patients?Secure Mental Health UnitsSecure mental health units in the UK require a high level of security because they often house people who have been previously incarcerated or those who have been admitted to the hospital after committing a crime. In addition, they deliver care to patients who may pose a risk to the general public and try to help their patients recover by offering accommodation, treatment and support.Patients in secure hospitals are not allowed to leave and cannot escape if they pose a danger to themselves or others. Therefore, the security is always extremely stringent inside and outside each unit. What are the Requirments of Secure Units?Security and safety of patients is a priority for NHS mental health units. A mental health unit is not a prison; it is a hospital where patients are cared for and nursed back to recovery with treatment and support. Patients mustn’t feel like they have been locked up, and the environment needs to be calming so that patients can enjoy the restful environment conducive to their recovery. However, it is also essential that patients not come and go because the unit delivers high-level security on a secure mental health unit. Therefore, any perimeter fencing must be extremely secure to keep the patients from leaving the hospital, and patients must also not be able to break down or scale the fencing. Therefore a duality must be created where a prison-like environment exists without the hospital being perceived as a prison by the patients on the unit. The SolutionZaun HiSec Prison fencing is used as a solution to all the requirements of secure mental health units. Every panel of the HiSec 358 close mesh fencing is specifically designed to ensure the safety and security of patients within the unit.In addition to the 358 mesh, the fencing features 1.5mm solid steel sheets, pre-galvanised, powder coated and printed with an image. This provides privacy to the patients inside while maintaining a high-security level. These sheets are then fixed to the fencing with a clamp bar on the post and clamped with an additional clamp bar mid bar to maximise their durability and sturdiness. To achieve tailored and bespoke results, sheets are pre-cut to size before arriving on-site, ready for installation. One of the most important facets of the fencing is the printed image on the front of the sheets. These images, often created by local artists, are created to calm the patients on the mental health unit, making them feel less anxious and improving their positivity. Therefore, they tend to depict calming imagery, such as lush flowers or relaxing scenery. This printed fencing has the dual outcome of keeping patients safe and secure inside the secure mental health unit and giving them restful images to views, such as vibrant yellow sunflowers and the glint of sunlight through woodland. In addition, viewing nature scenes has the benefit of positively improving mental health.

Retrofit NIBE air source heat pump project for Manchester City Council

Retrofit NIBE air source heat pump project for Manchester City Council

NIBE Energy Systems Ltd

Background to the projectSouthway Housing Trust is a South Manchester based housing association managing 6,000 local homes.Southway has pledged to be zero-carbon by 2038 and has identified switching its homes from gas to electric heating as crucial to achieving this target. In 2022, a survey of Southway’s residents found that 88% were keen to reduce their impact on climate change, and Southway’s commitment to reducing carbon is in line with Manchester City Council’s net-zero ambitions. The Arrowfield Low Carbon Living Project represents an early and ambitious retrofit of a south Manchester neighbourhood that will reduce the estate’s carbon footprint by as much as 50%.Southway is replacing 396 of Arrowfield’s inefficient gas boilers in-line with long term government plans to electrify heat and will also improve the fabric of homes to make them more energy efficient. The scale of the project, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has made it one of the UK’s biggest home retrofit schemes.NIBE products used:NIBE F2040 Air Source Heat PumpKey stats:112 NIBE F2040 Air Source Heat Pumps installedContributes to project to remove 370 tonnes per annum of CO2 in ArrowfieldInstalled by Rothwell Plumbing GroupPart of a project to retrofit 199 homes with air source heat pumpsThe solution to the projectArrowfield Low Carbon Living is a flagship scheme in Manchester, retrofitting 199 homes and 197 apartments with air source heat pumps. NIBE was chosen as one of two heat pump providers to bring low carbon, sustainable heating to residents living in the Arrowfield estate. NIBE’s high quality, reliable heat pump systems provide optimum savings and automatically adapt to each home’s output requirements.Rothwell Plumbing Group (RPS) was chosen as the installation partner for the project, with a proven track record for delivering high quality heat pump systems, in both the public and private sectors. RPS are also MCS & Trustmark accredited, with the experience and technical ability to install NIBE systems to the highest of standards.Southway’s aim is for the project to act as a learning process and blueprint for how it can scale up the retrofitting of its entire housing stock over the next 15 years.Ahead of this ambitious project, a community engagement programme enabled greater awareness of heat pumps as a low carbon heating solution, whilst providing the opportunity to listen and respond to resident feedback. The Arrowfield Hub, located in in a repurposed empty house on the estate, became a venue for regular engagement between the residents and the project team, creating an open forum for questions and comments on the proposed scheme. The Hub was also heated by an air source heat pump, allowing residents to witness a live heat pump in operation and experience the warmth of the building.Residents were also able to express their concerns surrounding the project, and these could be addressed accordingly. This regular and open engagement was key to keeping residents informed and more familiar with their soon-to-be new heating systems. The Hub also allowed for the project team to dispel common myths and misconceptions about air source heat pumps and reassure residents that their homes would remain warm throughout the yearThe Results112 NIBE’s F2040 Air Source Heat Pumps have been providing heat and hot water to residents across the estate, adapting to the requirements of each and every home in the estate, whilst providing powerful output even down to outdoor temperatures as low as -20°C.The systems will provide homes across the estate with optimised energy and cost savings, whilst supplying a supply line temperature of up to 58°C regardless of outdoor temperatures.TestimonialMatt Roberts, Strategic Director of Property and Development at Southway Housing, said:"Community engagement for the Arrowfield Low Carbon Living Project was central to the project's aims. Foregrounding the needs of Arrowfield's residents as central to the project’s implementation, helped us to better convey the benefits of low carbon heating and address concerns and suggestions brought forward by homes set to benefit from the retrofit scheme.Air source heat pumps are essential to Southway Housing Trust decarbonising our housing stock and achieving our net-zero goals. Working in partnership with NIBE is part of that process and has contributed to achieving carbon savings of 370 tonnes CO2 per annum on Arrowfield.”About the installerRothwell Plumbing Services Group Ltd, formed in 1997, are a family run business specialising in delivering renewable solutions across the North of England. The company helped to ensure residents in Arrowfield Estate could access maximum energy savings and reduced energy bills.

Innovative Swimming Pool Ventilation Solution for Prestigious Residential Property in Belgravia, London

Recotherm Ltd

OverviewRecotherm were instructed by Pool Court Ltd, a renowned UK pool construction company, to design a bespoke air handling unit for a unique project at a prestigious residential property located in Belgravia, London. ChallengesThere were various design challenges to overcome on this project: The unit needed to be installed in the basement with limited access The swimming pool area featured a rising floor, allowing for flexible use of the space The client desired a ventilation solution capable of handling a substantial cooling load to maintain a comfortable environment during eventsThe property was subject to strict local planning regulations prohibiting the use of exterior condensing units normally needed for cooling SolutionRecotherm developed a one-of-a-kind swimming pool ventilation unit.  Integrating the condensing element of the refrigeration process into the unit we overcame the local authority's restriction whilst also providing efficient and effective ventilation that could adapt to changing floor configurations. The basement access was overcome by utilising our flat pack process and building the unit within the plant room. The unit included three fans to ensure the system could operate on full fresh air even when the condenser was running at full speed. This design guaranteed efficient cooling while maintaining optimal air quality during crowded events.  Engineered to prioritise the use of fresh air cooling whenever possible, the unit utilises the extra power required by the refrigeration circuit only when necessary. This approach maximises energy efficiency and reduces overall power consumption. This bespoke solution demonstrates a commitment to delivering customised, intelligent solutions that ensure exceptional performance, energy efficiency, and enhanced comfort for Pool Court’s valued client.  Recotherm delivered:Engineering expertiseBespoke designEasy installation with flat pack componentsCertified installersEnergy efficiency

Individual shelter units, cycle hoops and extensions are all available from stock at IAE Shelters. The modular design meant the same style of shelter could be used across all the different sized units on the development to provide a consistent look across the site.Low Impact StylingBREEAM guidelines also state that the cycle storage has to be in a prominent, easy to access location to encourage cycle use, and not hidden around the back of the unit to hide it from site. The low impact styling of the Cicrconomy Cycle Shelter provides an unobtrusive look and means the shelter can be easily dropped into a site layout without concerns about it affecting the overall look of the project. To finish the design, the galvanised frames were powder coated anthracite grey to give a contemporary look.Specifying IAE SheltersThe Circonomy Cycle Shelter is IAE's most popular shelter, with hundreds installed around the country.
