CONTOUR HEATING PRODUCTS LIMITED

The refurbishment of children's wards at Leighton Hospital by the Estates Management Team at Mid Cheshire Hospitals aimed to alleviate the distress often associated with hospital visits for young patients. Recognizing the anxiety induced by unfamiliar surroundings, the team prioritized transforming clinical spaces into welcoming environments conducive to children's wellbeing and recovery.Employing an innovative approach, large format prints of wildlife in forest and jungle settings adorned the walls behind beds, accompanied by soft natural colours on walls, panels, and fixtures. The use of RAL Green 6019 on the DeepClean LST radiator guards contributed to the soothing ambiance, seamlessly blending with the floor covering and complementing the blue panelling behind the wall-mounted washbasins. This thoughtful design choice aimed to create a calming and tranquil atmosphere for children during their recuperation.Furthermore, the choice of RAL White 9003 for the guards in the ward corridors maintained a clean and hygienic environment. The DeepClean guards, featuring a patented drop-down front panel for easy access and a BioCote anti-microbial coating, played a crucial role in upholding hygiene standards in critical care areas. To further enhance the natural theme, Contour supplied a column casing finished in RAL Brown 1019, harmonizing with the jungle and forest-inspired décor. This comprehensive refurbishment initiative demonstrates a commitment to not only aesthetics but also the holistic wellbeing of young patients undergoing treatment at Leighton Hospital.

Altro

The Milton Keynes Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department was undergoing a refurbishment. The overall aim was to create a child-friendly environment that would appeal to children of all ages.AD Architects designed the new unit and chose Altro Orchestra to create two colourful, reception play areas. The variety of different shades and textures gave scope for an enchanted woodland forest theme to be created using Altro Orchestra throughout. Altro Suprema safety flooring was also fitted in the new unit’s observation areas, treatment bays and examination rooms. The new unit was built by Parias Commercial Interiors, and the Altro flooring fitted by Total Flooring. Altro Orchestra flooring helped to transform the Paediatric Emergency Department to a wonderfully bright, colourful area that children love to play in. Altro Orchestra offers comfort underfoot making life easier on the feet for staff and visitors, and with a palette of 40 colours and designs — varying from calming neutrals reflecting tones of nature to vibrant shades — it creates the right atmosphere every time. Increasing reports of fumes from the greased-up brick extraction ducts have been a concern.A survey of the riser and plantroom was carried out to determine the most suitable solution. VentilFle-25 RKV for kitchen extracts was the preferred option due to the reduced access to the 30-meter brick riser.Statement of workThe shaft had been in use without a kitchen extract liner for the extraction of kitchen gases. This was a concern due to grease build-up, which can result in unpleasant odours within the building.VentilFlex-25 kitchen extract lining system was the chosen alternative lining method, with its jointless design, excellent heat resistance and fire rating, and crucially, an installation method that only required access at the top and the bottom of the riser.

Whitby Community Hospital (Healthcare - Latitude)

Hochiki Europe (UK) Ltd

A range of services are delivered from this newly refurbished area of the hospital, including a new urgent treatment centre, podiatry services, physiotherapy, audiology and much more. The Tower Block is also home to the Memorial Ward, where those who need to stay on the ward (and their families) will have access to accessible and comfortable spaces and facilities.Tees Fire Systems Limited is one of Hochiki Europe’s System Partners, a nationwide network of trained, professional and accredited fire alarm companies, recognised in the UK for their high levels of expertise, workmanship, customer service and quality. Having worked with Hochiki Europe for over a decade, the team at Tees Fire, led by Managing Director David Hynes, said: “We have used Hochiki Europe products for well over a decade now and having worked on several hospital installation projects over the years, each time we recommend Hochiki because they are always reliable and cost effective.”For the project at Whitby Community Hospital, Hochiki Europe's Latitude system was chosen because it has a powerful cause-and-effect capacity, ideal because hospitals often require a system which allows for phased evacuations. Because of the number of vulnerable people within a hospital, avoiding widespread panic is essential, and with a Hochiki Latitude system in place should a fire break out, the area which is immediately impacted can be evacuated, whilst simultaneously triggering warning signals to neighbouring areas. This would automatically alert nurses and doctors to a possible emergency, giving them time to prepare for an evacuation avoiding panic. “Latitude worked seamlessly with other systems too, such as the lifts and the plant room, via the building management system. This means a controlled and safe evacuation can be achieved, keeping patient safety the number one priority if an emergency should arise.”“We installed LCD touchscreen repeaters at nurses' stations using the Hochiki Latitude Vision repeaters, and trained staff how to use and understand the repeaters, using the intuitively designed interface. They are also very compact in their design compared to others on the market, at not much bigger than a tablet they don’t take up lots of room in a busy nurse's station.”The added benefit of using Hochiki Europe devices in a hospital environment is that they can be flexible depending on the use of the rooms or wards they are placed in. Using a universal, electronics-free mounting base, sensors, sounders and beacons can easily ‘clip in and clip out’ allowing for flexible fire safety design and easier device maintenance. With the installation project completed in October 2021, the team faced the challenge of working alongside other contractors during the global pandemic, meaning careful management of teams. “In one respect it was tricky because of the pandemic, but it worked in our favour because we were able to have an entire floor to ourselves to install and test the system, working our way through the building methodically.”Commenting on the successful installation Hynes said “I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Hochiki Europe, especially for healthcare estate projects. The team are knowledgeable and always ready to help should we need it, especially the technical support team. Our account manager has lots of experience in the industry and we trust him and the team to provide us with a cost effective and compliant solution.”Mick Hall, System Sales Manager at Hochiki Europe said “Tees Fire are one of our biggest independent system’s partners and have worked with Hochiki Europe for a long time, so there is a trusted relationship there. The install went so well that we have helped Tees Fire to deliver a CPD to the staff at the hospital on False Alarm Management, something that is critical to understand for the responsible person(s), especially in a healthcare environment.”Tees Fire have an ongoing relationship with the NHS property services and are currently employed by them on site to carry out ongoing maintenance of the Hochiki Europe life safety devices.

Ball, F and Co Ltd

F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s newest high-performance water-mix smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 1500 AquaPro, has been used alongside the company’s Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive vinyl adhesive to provide a time-saving solution for installing floorcoverings in Derbyshire’s largest hospital.Derbyshire Flooring Contractors installed an eye-catching bespoke vinyl flooring design in the waiting area and connecting corridors of the children’s outpatient ward at Royal Derby Hospital, a total area of 800m2.The floors in the ward required refurbishing as the old floorcoverings had become worn. Work needed to be carried out in the evening, in stages, so that it would not interfere with the day-to-day running of the ward. Requiring a time-saving solution, contractors opted to use Stopgap 1500 AquaPro water-mix smoothing underlayment, avoiding the need to remove old adhesive residues.Stopgap 1500 AquaPro uses the latest technology to offer a water-mix smoothing underlayment that can be applied over old adhesive residues, including bitumen, carpet tile tackifiers and ceramic tile adhesives. In such applications, there is no need to prime beforehand, saving further time and expense. Fast-setting and fast-drying, it is walk-on hard in as little as 60 minutes after application and ready to receive floorcoverings from just four hours.Work began with the labour-intensive task of uplifting old floorcoverings. Stopgap 1500 AquaPro was then applied at a thickness of 3mm over the subfloors to create a perfectly smooth base for new floorcoverings.A bespoke two-tone design, resembling a river running through the children’s ward with ‘islands’ of colour either side, was created by cutting shapes from two different colours of Polyflor Classic Mystique PUR vinyl sheet flooring, with the pieces adhered using Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive.Styccobond F46 provides instant grab, preventing floorcoverings from sliding when placed, helping with the creation of designs and patterns. The adhesive is also formulated to minimise the incidence of trowel serrations showing through thin vinyl flooring potentially affecting the finished appearance of installations.Commenting on the project, Mark Grant, Managing Director at Derbyshire Flooring Contractors, said: “We like using F. Ball products – they’re really good quality and reliable. Also, their tech reps are always available, if needed, to provide advice on products to use and procedures to follow throughout a project, from start to finish, including keeping us up-to-date with the latest technology that can help us achieve optimum results efficiently. That’s how I found out about Stopgap 1500 AquaPro, which saved us a lot of time outside of normal working hours and enabled us to complete the work while the ward wasn’t in use, minimising disruption to services.”

Chase Farm Hospital

Danosa UK Ltd

Some of our most important public sector assets are held within the healthcare system so choosing the correct specification is critical. Often these buildings host patients or the latest medical equipment, and this centrally funded NHS project at Chase Farm Hospital was no different. This particular project hosted an array of plant and equipment for the NHS and our lightweight DANOPOL HS 1.5mm mechanically fastened membrane was chosen as the waterproofing system to be installed onto the structural metal deck. The scheme also featured a tapered insulation scheme in partnership with Kingspan Insulation designed to 1:60 falls and 0.30 w/m2 K u-value. When installed to structural metal decks, all the mechanically fastened components are mechanically fastened to the crowns only, so careful consideration must be made to ensure that any mechanical fasteners coincide appropriately. A project-specific wind uplift calculation was completed by our technical team which provided detailed instructions and fastening patterns for the mechanical attachment of both the waterproofing membrane and tapered insulation scheme. In addition to ensuring that the system will resist any applicable windload, our calculations can reduce overall frequency of fasteners, ensuring that the project is not over-engineered and ensure that the installation progresses as quickly as possible.Waterproofing Systems:DANOPOL HS 1.5mm - Light GreyConstruction Type:New BuildWarm RoofSector: Public Sector Approx. Royal Liverpool University Hospital, MerseysideContractor: Saxon ContractingProduct Installed: 2no Kensington Junior Wall Mounted Entrance CanopiesCanopy Sizes: 2no.2.8m x 1.5mFrame Colour: Black-Grey, RAL 7021Installation Date: September 2022The BriefThe Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Merseyside were having a new state of the art facility built to replace their existing site which could no longer accommodate the demands the hospital was required to achieve. The new hospital would feature 641 single en-suite bedrooms including 40 critical care beds, 41 emergency department spaces and 66 acute medical unit spaces, making it a very welcome upgrade by staff and locals.Saxon Contracting were working on the project alongside the main contractors and asked us to send an estimate for two Kensington Junior Wall Mounted Entrance Canopies. They specifically required safety glass to cover the commercial canopies, which was perfectly achievable because the Kensington range is available with a choice of solid polycarbonate or toughened glass panels. The SolutionWe sent an estimate as requested for the two canopies, both 2.8m x 1.5m with Black-Grey (RAL 7021) frames as requested.Because both entrance canopies were to be fixed onto external lift shafts which did not have the usual steel internal supports that we would usually fix to, and we were therefore required to resin fix the canopies into a concrete wall, it was important that these canopies were supplied with site specific structural calculations. We are able to provide full site-specific structural calculations for each project we undertake if required, so this wasn’t a problem. The InstallationThe installation was carried out over two phases with the first phase including the installation of the first fix brackets into the concrete wall. There was an issue when installing the first fix brackets because the lift shafts did not have a bridge installed. However, we liaised with the contractors, and they were able to add birdcage scaffolding onto the lifts which solved the issue, resulting in us installing the brackets as required. We then left site as planned so that the other contractors onsite could install the panelling onto the lift shafts.Once the panelling was completed, we returned to site when scheduled to complete phase two which included the installation of the canopies onto the brackets. The hospital was officially opened in October 2022 with patients and staff making good use of the shelter above the lifts to keep them dry when entering and leaving. The canopies also help to make the lifts safter by reducing the slip hazard of driving rain.
