St Andrew’s C of E Primary School, Surrey

urbanspec

As with many primary schools, St Andrew’s C of E Primary School suffered from a serious lack of dining space with a small hall that also had to accommodate indoor PE lessons and assemblies. A further issue was that no internal connections existed between the two main blocks of the school, meaning students had to walk through the front carpark of the school – a major safeguarding issue.Streetspace have completed two projects to resolve these issues for the school, installing a 10.0m x 5.0m Triton Maxx symmetric polycarbonate roof canopy in a courtyard adjacent to the hall to provide additional dining space, and a 20.5m x 1.5m Triton Mono walkway with glazed curtain walling to provide security across the front elevation of the school. The projects have been a great success for the school, with the head teacher commenting: “The covered walkway means the whole front of the school is enclosed, ensuring children having lessons in the hall aren’t disturbed and visitors can only access the school through reception. The dining room was overcrowded, and the noise levels were higher than we wanted and it made it difficult to manage. Now we’ve practically doubled our dining space and that’s really helped the children choose where they want to go and eat. It’s helped with the noise levels and made the dining experience much more pleasant.”

The lockers were commissioned by the school and designed by Geschwender to make the most of the space available in the curved concourse of the school.Lockers were also installed with Metra electronic locking, the school chose an RFID system which used the students existing ID cards to open their allocated locker when presented to the central access panel. Using existing cards meant that the school had minimal ongoing running costs as cards can be set-up and replaced by school staff without needing to order replacement keys or locks for students.Electronic locking also makes locker allocation and re-allocation easy and straightforward, master computers are managed by the school allowing remote access to lockers for changing user access settings and opening individual lockers without the key card if required.

Metal lockers at Weald of Kent Grammar School

Helmsman

While the summer holidays are going on, many schools are thinking about restoring, replacing, or expanding the current lockers. The holidays are a great time to get these jobs done, as it's much quicker for installers to operate and they don’t get in the way of your students. Our Team at Helmsman manufactured and installed new lockers replacing the old ones at Weald of Kent Grammar.  Weald of Kent Grammar is a secondary school that has a strong focus on academic achievement and selects pupils based on their ability. The school requested metal lockers, with 3 compartments and 1 compartment with metal sloping tops. Metal lockers are a beneficial option for schools, as they can come in a range of compartments, colours, and sizes. The school requested sloping tops that prevent people from using the top of the lockers as a storage area, which can create a safety hazard if items fall or if students climb on top of the lockers. Our team manufactured 98 one-compartment lockers with the size of lockers 665mm high, 300mm wide, and 450mm deep. Also, three compartment that is 1775mm high, 300 wide, and 450 deep. The colour of the lockers was requested to be ‘Ultramarine Blue’ with body colour to be ‘Ice’. With sloping tops to be 'elegant grey' and extended by 80mm. With the lockers, they have requested Cam locks which would make students feel guaranteed that their belongings are safe and secure. It was great to work again with Weald of Kent Grammar on this project. They had a slow dry time of around 30 seconds and a rated power of 2300 kW, which isn’t very energy efficient for a hand dryer. Innovare Offsite Limited

Project:Thames Park Client: Department for Education (DfE) Contractor:Bower & Kirkland (B&K) Architect:Stride Treglown Value: £24m Location:Grays, Essex GIFA: 6950m2 Completion:September 2022SOLUTION Innovaré supporting Bowmer & Kirkland delivered the £24m Thames Park School through the DfE Offsite Framework. The proposed designs and plans for the school were carefully considered, with collaboration between project partners, staff at the school and the Design Review Panel at Thurrock Council. The Innovaré team managed the structural design, manufacture, and installation. Thames Park was constructed utilising a hybrid offsite approach incorporating Innovaré’s i-FAST panelised solution, integrating windows and external brick slips to the ground floor and cladding above. Roof cassettes were by Pasquils and pre-cast concrete floors by Creagh Concrete, with M&E specialist DBS supporting the fit-out solution for the plant room offsite. OUTCOME Taking the majority of the build offsite and using scaffold-less installation improved onsite health and safety. The project was 100% safe with zero hours lost to RIDDORS and accidents. Utilising offsite manufacture also allowed for a higher quality finish, with a robust testing and quality checking system to reduce ongoing maintenance. Basing the design on CIBSE, BS – U-Values as low as 0.21w/m2k were achieved, reducing energy requirements for the lifetime of the school. Insulated wall panels and precast concrete floors also allow enhanced temperature management, reducing heating and cooling costs and associated carbon output. Innovaré’s input assisted in the delivery of ‘Configure Offsite 3.0’ – a mature standardised yet flexible school solution, designed to exceed the stringent requirements of the DfE’s output specification and also reduce construction duration by 30%. The collaborative approach taken during the project culminated in enhanced Pre-Manufactured Value, reduced onsite construction time and minimised environmental impact. This further improved construction quality and health and safety.Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer of Osbourne Co-operative Academy Trust, said: “We have worked very closely with the main contractors Bowmer & Kirkland and the DfE on the design of our new school and we feel the educational principles and digital vision that drive this project have been keenly thought through, so that this development delivers more than just a state-of-the-art school, but also a community facility that serves the local area and enhances the landscape in which it sits.” Headteacher of Thames Park, Kam Bains, said: “We are delighted and excited by the opportunity to deliver outstanding learning facilities and a permanent home for the wonderful students at Thames Park Secondary School. Thurrock students deserve the very best education in a happy and high achieving school.” Thames Park Secondary School

Torquay Boys Grammar School

Ecoprod Technique

Torquay Boys’ Grammar School was established in 1904 and has been on its current site since 1983. At that time it had 750 boys but the number has now risen to 1,120 so extensive building programmes have taken place over the last 30 years to keep its facilities up to date.In 2018 the decision was made to switch to waterless urinals throughout the school as part of a refurbishment of all the washrooms, funded through condition improving funding administered via Hookway – a firm of chartered surveyors. It was Hookway who suggested that the school consider switching to waterless urinals, based on its experience of installing them in other schools.Peter Richardson, TBGS’s site manager, went to look at the waterless urinals installed at Colyton Grammar School and decided to make the switch. In July 2018 22 waterless urinals were installed, with a further 11 added in September 2020."The main benefit of the waterless urinals for us has been the money that we have saved on our water bill. In the South West we pay one of the highest rates for water in the country and so saving water and cutting usage was a big motivation for us. Now that the waterless urinals are installed I estimate that we are saving between £4,000 and £6,000 per year just off our water bills – it makes a big difference.""Another big benefit we’ve noticed is that there’s no longer any smell in the urinals. It used to be absolutely awful. We had tiled floors so splashes of urine would go on the floors, and of course the boys can’t aim, but now the combination of vinyl floor and waterless urinals has completely removed the issue with odour. The waterless urinals have made a vast improvement to the washrooms in the school.""When we did the initial installation we had some toilets that were quite new and didn’t need refurbishing so we kept them as they were, but recently we bought more waterless urinals and fitted them into those areas as well because we found that they had been such a success. We fitted them ourselves in house and the process of swapping over to the waterless urinals was very straightforward.""I would highly recommend waterless urinals. We can see that our water bill has really gone down and down and down, and on a day to day level the issue with smell has been completely taken care of – we don’t get anything at all now."

Two Rivers Primary School

Forbo Flooring Systems

FORBO’S FLOORING ELEVATES THE SUSTAINABILITY ETHOS IN NEW ECO-FRIENDLY PRIMARY SCHOOL  Two Rivers primary school in Keynsham, Somerset, is only the second school in the country to achieve Passivhaus Plus accreditation. To achieve this impressive milestone, architects Hatcher Prichard had to make conscious choices when it came to choosing materials for this project. With outstanding sustainability credentials and a wide portfolio of solutions suitable for the education sector, Hatcher Prichard specified a variety of Forbo Flooring Systems’ contemporary floor coverings, including its Tessera carpet tiles, Sphera and Eternal vinyl floor coverings, as well as both its Surestep and Safestep safety flooring. A new build primary school for 420 pupils, Two Rivers Primary School was designed to add the much-needed provision for primary education to children in the Keynsham area, whilst also following sustainable building practices. With the requirement to achieve Passivhaus Plus accreditation, which meant the building had to produce as much energy as the occupants use, Hatcher Prichard had to carefully consider the materials used in the construction of this building.  Simon Hatcher, Director at Hatcher Prichard explains further: “Two Rivers achieved Passivhaus Plus accreditation in February 2023 and is only the second school in the country to do so. It is also the first to be built using standard building materials, including a steel frame with concrete floor slabs. When it came to specifying materials for the building, we looked for manufacturers that had strong sustainability credentials. With Forbo’s environmental goals so aligned with our own, and that of the building as a whole, it meant they were the perfect fit! In fact, Forbo’s sustainability credentials and flooring solutions were key to finishing this wonderful building.” However, as well as the sustainability objectives that Simon had to keep in mind, he also had to meet the design requirements. Simon commented on this, saying: “We were supplied with a document by the Department for Education on the Employer’s Requirements, which includes a section on floor coverings and the factors to consider when specifying materials for schools. The main area of consideration though was the functionality of the flooring; it had to withstand the heavy foot traffic we would expect to see in a school, whilst also being easy to clean and maintain.  “Additionally, the floor coverings needed to be installed seamlessly alongside each other to keep the joints between them flush, as well as provide some slip resistance. The chosen floor coverings also had to be suitable for the usage of each room, with the colourways used also needing to be appropriate for the age of the children using the space. The Forbo account managers really helped with this, thanks to their understanding of how specific products from Forbo’s portfolio met the individual requirements of each room in the school.” With the suitability of colours in mind, Simon looked to incorporate elements of the local environment into the design, as well as take inspiration from the school name too. He explained: “The design of the school draws from its location at the heart of Hygge Park, Keynsham. The surrounding area has a calm, Scandinavian palette of colours and materials, with the local houses made from light buff brickwork with white render above. We opted to use matching buff brick and white render externally, with complimentary blues, greys and whites for the walls and other surfaces inside. All the floor finishes were supplied using the contemporary and durable range of Forbo products required for each individual space. For example, Forbo’s Eternal vinyl was specified in the Washed Beech wood décor for the hall, hall store, studio and servery areas, which provided a natural contrast to the white paint on the walls, without being too distracting. “We also specified Forbo’s Sphera homogenous vinyl in a clear blue colourway, to represent the ‘two rivers’ of the school’s name, which runs along the ground floor corridor and extends back up along the first floor. We also used Forbo’s Eternal vinyl in the Smoke colourway for all the ground floor classrooms, which created a calm and neutral feeling.” What’s more, a selection of Forbo’s Tessera carpet tiles were chosen in a muted blue colourway for the first-floor classrooms, which helped to make them feel bright and spacious. Speaking on this decision, Simon said: “With the first-floor classrooms designed for the older students, we felt it would be more appropriate to use a textile flooring, as opposed to the vinyl flooring used in the Key Stage 1 classrooms. As such, Forbo’s Tessera Teviot carpet tiles were installed in the Mid Blue and Blue Moon colourways, both of which fit the colour theme running throughout the school. Additionally, the Tessera carpet tiles are really easy to clean, another requirement set out in the brief, so it ticked all the boxes.”  In addition to the above, Forbo’s Surestep and Safestep safety flooring were used across the project to ensure the safety of students throughout the building. Specified in the Smoke and Silver Grey colourways to match the colour scheme, the safety floors were installed in the wet rooms on both floors, as well as in the DT classroom on the first floor.  Simon concluded: “We’re really happy with the finished project, as are the school and students’ parents. The school held an open evening in mid-January where the Head and Deputy Head showed visitors around the building; both were delighted with every aspect, especially the hardwearing finishes throughout.” With the initial design stage beginning in August 2020, the school was completed in December 2022 and opened for students shortly afterwards in the new year. What’s more, the four-classroom extension had to be completed while the existing school and nursery operated as normal.Boyco were approached to simply provide fixed furniture and equipment but, instead, proposed a fully managed, supply and installation service that would ease the pressure on main contractor Bancon Construction. Our end-to-end package included the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke system of cloakroom fittings, teacher walls, kitchen units and height-adjustable worktops.Challenging lead times were made more difficult by the coronavirus pandemic and new construction site rules. However, we put together a plan of works for accelerated manufacture and installed the systems in just two weeks at the end of 2020. The extension was handed over to the client in January 2021.“It was satisfying that even in the midst of a global pandemic, the Council and its partners could work together to ensure the completion of the project,” said Cllr Gillian Owen, chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee.Throughout, we liaised directly with the architect and the end client, combining our skills and experience to provide a fully-managed service designed to take the pressure off the main contractor. “Hassle-free” was how they described it. The project contributed to a portfolio of successful supply-and-fit projects in Scotland. “I will be recommending that Bancon Construction use Boyco on future projects,” said site manager Colin Smith. The service from Boyco couldn’t be faulted - from the drawings and delivery schedule to the quality of fittings, and an installation team who worked diligently without fuss to get the work completed on time.Colin Smith, Site Manager, Bancon Construction
