Named the 3Ts as it includes trauma, tertiary and teaching care. Visionary architects and long-term client, BDP specified our INTRAflex XT systems with integrated Waterlogic drainage for the first stage - the main entrance building, The Louisa Martindale Building. Approximately eight by ten metres, the Entrance Mat extends from a covered external area, through a large revolving door, side doors and into the internal lobby. Performance was the main objective as the building welcomes over 100,000 patients a year, plus staff and visitors for seven theatres, 15 isolation suites, 28 wards and service departments.Focusing on FunctionalityAs a premier healthcare setting, functionality was paramount. The Entrance Mat efficiently removes water and dirt to prevent slips and keeps visitors safe. The zone 1, external section of the Entrance Mat uses INTRAflex XT with an open construction over the INTRAmatting Waterlogic drainage system to remove rainwater and dirt efficiently (it holds 75 litres per m2 which is then channelled into a waste water drainage system). Combined with hard-wearing and weatherproof rubber inserts, it scrubs and scrapes off large dirt particles before traffic meets the zone 2. From the large revolving door into the lobby, INTRAflex XT is used in its closed construction format, with fibre inserts, for greater comfort and further moisture absorption. A Higher StandardAnother key consideration was strength. The building's multiple-floor-height entrance is fully glazed with services installed at height. Specific access equipment and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) help maintain the building, so we checked their details to ensure the Entrance Mat could efficiently handle the load stress. The Waterlogic system is extremely strong, and we construct it with reinforced supports so that the chosen matting can easily cope with extreme loads. Manufactured to perfectly fit the matwell, the Waterlogic base curves around the 5m wide revolving door. Considering AccessibilityServing such a variety of people with specific needs, accessibility was another important part of the specification. BDP chose materials and finishes for DDA compliance. We have Light Reflecting Values (LRV) for each of our products, so BDP could easily choose which materials were best for contrasting with other flooring and building substrates.We test all our Entrance Matting products for slip ratings, and to ensure that they are wheel and heel proof. The zone 2, internal performance Entrance Matting is a closed construction with fibre inserts to scrape and remove finer debris. Canadian hospital chooses Altro for new MRI suiteIssueThe Centre Hospitalier Hôtel-Dieu D’Amos short-term hospital in Quebec, is part of the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of Abitibi-Temiscamingue. The hospital is a designated regional trauma centre and its main regional vocations are orthopaedics and vascular, plastic and maxilo-facial surgery.Since 2001, the region had an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) service via a mobile unit that moved from centre to centre, that reached the end of its useful life a few years ago. In 2021, the hospital became the home to the region’s first fixed MRI scanner.ApproachMaterials in the room must not interfere with the powerful electromagnets, while also being aesthetically pleasing, as the procedures performed could be quite stressful for many patients.As the region’s only fixed MRI, capable of performing 6,000 exams per year, this project required protective wall cladding with superior and long-lasting durability. Materials had to be non-porous, hygienic and easy-to-clean. Due to frequent wheelchair and stretcher traffic, a high impact-resistant surface was also a very important criterion.SolutionMLS Architects selected Altro Whiterock wall designs. The hospital was familiar with Altro Whiterock, having used it in other areas of the hospital. They especially liked that Altro Whiterock wall designs combine the durability, hygiene and resilience of Altro Whiterock wall cladding, with natural looking patterns. These helped enormously with the warm and comforting ambiance that they desired. The Altro walls system easily replaces the typical laminated particle board typically used in applications such as this, all while offering a more durable surface finish and a longer lasting product guarantee. Altro Whiterock Satins in Mint was used in the bathroom and changing area.

Park Heights is a prime project at the forefront of Network Homes’ transformation of the Stockwell Park Estate. Comprising of 159 high-quality apartments with large private balconies, a sky garden and communal terraces across its 20 storeys, Park Heights needed a non-combustible solution for its external spaces to ensure the security of the building and its residents, aligning with recent changes in fire legislation.Project BreakdownThe development is beautifully constructed, infiltrating new life into the surrounding area with light colour schemes, clean lines and contemporary aesthetics. With beautiful views of the Belvoir Valley, the client wanted a contemporary architectural piece that would integrate comfortably with its surrounding landscape whilst maintaining a natural yet modern 21st century aesthetic.Sustainability was at the forefront of the client’s brief, who wanted a recycled material for the external cladding that would accommodate the robust, maintenance-free and high quality requirements of the build. With the sensitive and vast wildlife of its surrounding landscape in mind, the property needed to be natural, both in terms of its aesthetic and its components, embodying an effective fusion of sustainability and simplicity.The SolutionBuilt to embrace the panoramic views, this two-floored structure is fuelled by the natural light of its landscape with its beautiful vast windows and balconies. Our stone Pioneer cladding was chosen to accompany this natural appeal, enhancing the contemporary simplicity that the client desired. It must be hygienic, dry hands quickly, make minimal noise and limit the creation of slip hazzards.SOLUTION- V7-300Over 300 jets of strategically placed air remove water from both sides of hands simultaniously without needing continuous hand movement. The Veltia V7-300 hand dryer uses patented technology to stop water from your hands ending up on the floor surface. This range uses Microban technology - an antibacterial protection impregnated at the manufacturing stage (that doesn’t wear out) which inhibits the growth and transference of microbes and harmful bacteria. There is also a ZeroSmell feature that neutralises bad odours. In November 2020, we were contacted to schedule a meeting regarding the renovation of the former registry office at 8 Wind Street, Neath.For the radiator specifications, we decided on our Compacts and LST Ultra radiators in our standard white (RAL 9016) for the extension room facilities, whilst our traditional Windsor Column radiators and associated feet were all customised to a rough textured anthracite colour (RAL 7016) for the main offices, corridors, and conference rooms. These choices were in line with the building’s style. We also provided the necessary white and anthracite Angled TRV & Lockshields, as well as the LST ACVK3 Direct TRV Valve Packs to complement the radiators. The local authority accepted our proposal, and with that in December 2020, we supplied our initial quotation for the project.In March 2021, after the construction work inside the building was completed. A site survey was then conducted to ensure that the chosen radiators would fit properly in their designated positions. Following the site survey, a direct purchase order was placed.The installation commenced in May 2021. To assist, we ordered a sample of a White Windsor Column and Associated Feet to serve as a template for the pipework levels.By late May 2021, the specially ordered Windsor Columns and Associated Feet arrived at our Southam Distribution Centre. This allowed Allied Mechanical Engineering to proceed with their installation plan.Between June and July 2021, three batches of radiators were delivered to 8 Wind Street, Neath, and the installations on each floor were completed.

Further, due to the unusually high footfall at Camden Market, washroom maintenance is proving challenging due to sudden peak surges. The client was looking for a technology solution to reduce their energy and operational costs, and new ways to engage its users to drive additional revenue based on shared values with its community.Our SolutionSAVORTEX deployed 20 of its revolutionary adDryerTM hand dryers on a pilot in 2 of the busiest washrooms at Camden Market. The adDryer uses an advanced digital brush-less motor technology, which consumes power of just 550W, offers 10x more operational life than traditional dryers and comes with an in-built Video screen, connected to a content management system and shows a full motion advert or internal message in response to users drying their hands.The dryer wirelessly reports the energy usage per dry and washroom footfall to the SAVORTEX web portal, allowing estates managers to remotely manage their washroom facilities, and drive responsive cleaning for enhanced hygiene and sustainability. Over the trial period the estates manager was able to monitor hand dryer usage and washroom footfall of 45,100 people per month with an average drying time of 8.8 seconds, triggering 1,100 washroom inspections per week, resulting in significant operational savings throughout the estate. World renowned architects, Foster + Partners, have a new galley kitchen in their Hester Road studio which features bespoke sinks, surfaces and splashbacks supplied by GEC Anderson.The GEC Anderson fabrications were produced through a series of meetings with the team so as to maximise the very compact space available for the kitchen. The items were delivered direct to site in Battersea for installation by specialist fitters CHC.GEC Anderson create custom engineered solutions to fit any space or specification. In the case of the Foster + Partners studio, stainless steel worktops include integrated sinks as well as cut outs for taps and drip tray. 20mm plain front edges were specified together with the [water tight] integral back upstand. Stainless steel splashbacks were also included.GEC Anderson’s stainless steel kitchen creations offer aesthetics, practicality and the ability to provide an easy to clean, hygienic, highly durable and long lasting environment.

Stopgap subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive have been used to create a laboratory-standard flooring finish at a new facility for international laboratories operator Tentamus Group, at Pride Park in Derbyshire.Flooring contractors used Stopgap Fill and Prime and Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound to prepare 1500m² of metal raised access panels over two floors before installing vinyl sheet safety flooring throughout. Once the primer had cured, Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound was applied to create a perfectly smooth base for the installation of floorcoverings. Contractors then used Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive to install Polyflor Polysafe Standard PUR heavy-duty vinyl safety flooring. Finally, Quantum PVC capping and coving was installed at the junctions between the floorcoverings and walls to produce a neat finish and allow for easy cleaning.

As part of the multi-million-pound restoration of Grade I listed Manchester Town Hall, window restoration specialist Shepley Engineers is restoring, refurbishing, repairing and replacing hundreds of historic leaded and metal casement windows throughout the site using Hodgson Sealants Metal Casement Putty and Leaded Lite Cement. Each piece of glass from the iron-framed leaded lite windows from the state rooms has been removed, cleaned, repaired – or replaced by new fabrications if necessary – and reinstated using Hodgson’s Leaded Lite Cement in Shepley’s on-site restoration studio. The metal casement windows on the lower floors have been removed to Sheffield for restoration using Hodgson’s Metal Casement Putty, a high quality, hand-applied glazing compound that is formulated or bedding and external fronting of single glass into primed steel, timber frames, sealed hardwood and concrete. It is designed to be overpainted as in this project.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home was established in 1860 by Mary Tealby as the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs. Since it opened, the charity has cared for more than 3.1 million dogs and cats. To increase capacity at their old Windsor site BDCH are adding a new wing.The animal charity required specialist doors for a new intake building which includes 27 kennels and 4 maternity kennels.Dortek supplied hygienic hinged doors with Stainless Steel frames throughout the new building. Some doors also had automations and access control locks for ease of access and increased security. Fire doors with 30 minutes certification were also supplied for the protection of animals and staff throughout the facility.The GRP construction of Dortek doors makes them easy to clean, waterproof and extremely robust. They are ideally suited to animal care facilities requiring a low maintenance design.

Ivydale Primary School is an expansion of the campus. Combating increasing demand for primary schools within the UK, it introduced a two-storey cross-laminated timber framed building on a second site nearby; this includes an amphitheatre. This extension has doubled the school’s capacity to accommodate key stage two children in a four-form entry primary school. Taking inspiration from the children’s illustration ‘The Fox in the Forest’ by Julia Woolf, this development won a regional RIBA London Award in 2018. Southwark Borough Council ensured the remodelled building was energy efficient, applying the London Plan’s energy hierarchy: ‘Be Lean, Be Clean, Be Green’.Cellecta’s HEXATHERM XCHiP was specified by Hawkins\Brown due to its high-performance thermal insulation with a P5 moisture-resistant tongue and groove chipboard to produce a high compressive strength, interlocking floorboard.Galliford Try was supplied 1,000m² of Cellecta products to develop this school in Southwark.

The Mode Huiskes residential complex in the Dutch town of Twello has been completely redesigned, creating an innovative location with a clean and simple look. The outdoor flooring used for the project is the LASTRA 20mm version of Atlas Concorde's Trust collection.The renovation project was designed by architects at Bessel and includes a 675 square meter structure divided into different spaces. Ward Firth 9 at The Northern General Hospital underwent a complete refurbishment as part of an essential maintenance project recently which included redecoration and new flooring as well as the installation of Yeoman Shield Wall Protection Panels and Guardian Handrail.After the work was completed the ward lookedsmart and refreshed which left the originalNurses Station lack lustre, as pictured to the left.Yeoman Shield were able to offer a solution to theworn work-unit with the application, to the sidesof the desk, of 2.0mm thick FalmouthEx protectionpanels in light grey to match the surrounding décor.The tops of the work stations were covered withYeoman Shield Satin Pastel Smooth panels in thecolour Clay.Not only did the covering of the nurse’s stationwith Yeoman Shield products reflect the newsmart décor of the wards but also gave them anextra lease of life with a durable impact resistantand easy to clean hygienic finish.

Recently, our good friends over at R & A Pressure Washing shared with us a customers garden furniture that was in dire need of restoration.They had a garden swing and a BBQ Prep station / organiser that was looking a little worse for wear. Being much loved and used had taken its toll. Luckily, Roger knew exactly what to do to restore them to their former glory.Firstly, Prepdeck was used to strip the previous coatingAs both the swing and the prep station had been previously coated, Roger had to strip off the old finish. This is a very important step and if you fail to do this it will alter your overall finish. Owatrol products need to penetrate into the wood to give the desired finish. This simply cannot be done if there is a previous coating on the wood.Roger worked in areas that could be completed in around 15 mins and applied the Prepdeck undiluted onto the furniture.After about 15 minutes, you can test a small area with a nylon scrubbing brush to see if the finish is lifting. If it is, scrub the area with a stiff nylon brush. Or, alternatively, a pressure washer at 1000 – 1500 psi (70-103 bars). The psi needed will vary depending on the type of wood you are using it on.Once sufficiently scrubbed, rinse with copious amounts of fresh water.Secondly, Net-Trol was used to clean and neutralise the woodRoger then used Net-Trol to lighten and restore the natural colour of the wood – without bleaching it.One of our favourite products, Net-Trol effortlessly removes ground in and surface dirt in as little as 15 minutes, leaving the furniture looking bright and vibrant.Before applying Net-Trol, Roger wet the furniture with clean water.Once both the pieces of furniture were sufficiently wet, he then applied Net-Trol with a synthetic brush and scrubbed the wood with a stiff synthetic brush. Roger worked to ensure that he had scrubbed the Net-Trol thoroughly making sure to get into all the small nooks and crannies.After leaving the Net-Trol to stand for approximately 15-20 minutes (if it started to dry, Roger applied a mist of water to keep it wet), he used a presser washer (max. 60 bar) to clean the furniture. If you don’t have a pressure washer, you can scrub the surface whilst simultaneously rinsing it with water.Lastly, the furniture was finished with Aquadecks in the shade honeyAquadecks is a water-based penetrating wood finish that can be used on both new and weathered wood.It’s easy to apply and maintain, with no labour-intensive sanding or stripping required.Roger applied a liberal amount of Aquadecks with a brush, working in the direction of the grain.As soon as the ‘wet look’ of the first application had disappeared, Roger then applied the second coat and allowed it to penetrate. This took around 15-20 minutes. It’s important not to let Aquadecks become touch dry between applications and to work in sections that will take no longer than 30 minutes to complete.Next, in order to avoid Aquadecks drying as shiny spots on the surface, he wiped up any excess that had not penetrated into the decking.As Aquadecks is water-based, Roger could then wash the brush and cloth in soap and water.Take a look at those beautiful finished results! The design of the contemporary £4M building restores the historic Whitburn Burgh Hall original façade as it is one of the towns most renowned buildings and incorporates a new-build two-storey extension.Located in the centre of Whitburn, this building is a community hub that embraces the West Lothian Council’s model of bringing together services that benefit local communities whilst delivering financial efficiencies through the decrease of council buildings. The bituminous Bauder Total Roof System (BTRS) was chosen for this project as it features membranes that can withstand impact and tearing, as well as thermal insulation that met the required U-value of 0.15 W/m²K. This waterproofing system is verified by the BBA and offers a service life in excess of 35 years.The BauderSOLAR system was also specified, as it incorporates photovoltaic arrays for natural energy generation. The photovoltaic mounting system is attached to the roof without penetration of waterproofing or the deck, safeguarding the integrity of the waterproofing to fulfil its full-service life.Project challengesThe Architect’s design incorporated unusually high parapet upstands, which posed a challenge for installers. Area technical manager for Bauder, Christopher Langton, attended design meetings with the Architects and Main Contractor to discuss the best solution for installation. A mutual agreement was made for the underlayer to be mechanically fixed to prevent any slippage of the capping sheet membrane. Due to the height of the upstand, non-combustible insulation BauderROCK was incorporated into the design at these details.The installation of BauderSOLAR F uses prefabricated bituminous BauderK5K membrane sleeves to slip over the mounting plates and welded into position, anchoring the plates to the surface of the Bauder waterproofing system. Approved BauderSOLAR installers, Intelligent Electrical Solutions, installed the BauderSOLAR system, collaborating with ProCladd, approved contractor for the waterproofing installation, and other trades during the roof installation.There is a junction where the flat roof meets the original slate roof of the adjacent building, this detail fell under the torch free zone that hot air welding techniques are used to install the membranes within these areas.The resultInstallation of the Bauder waterproofing system may only be carried out by trained and certified operatives approved by Bauder. A project pre-start meeting was held by Bauder site technician, Duncan Hastings, and area technical manager, Christopher Langton inviting the Site Manager from Procladd and their Bauder badged operatives. During this meeting, they discussed the installation of the project, and identified the areas that required torch-free and torch-safe detailing. They also discussed how the project was going to be delivered in co-ordination with other trades working on the site at the same time, for example cladding and lead that was installed atop the waterproofing upstand details.Weekly site-inspections were carried out by Bauder site technician, Duncan Hastings during the project. Visiting the site frequently meant that Duncan could provide consistent support to the installers and answer any questions they may have had directly. It also meant that the quality of the roof installation was being monitored regularly to ensure it would be to a high standard, achieving the comprehensive guarantee.The approach taken to deliver this project on time and to budget was through meticulous planning and working to tight time frames. The organisation of the delivery of Bauder products to site had to be in line with the schedule to ensure that the site was ready to receive a delivery. With the project located in the busy centre of Whitburn next to a cross junction with traffic lights. This meant that timed delivery of products to site was required in addition to prebooked off-loading by pump truck and tail lift or by telehandler.Health, safety and environment was managed during the planning, design and installation of this project by advising that all installers follow the advice shown in the “Responsible Specification Checklist” produced by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors.In accordance with the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, roof edge protection in the form of scaffolding was installed during installation. The project’s perimeters were surrounded by Heras fencing to isolate the construction site from the public. All scaffolds that were on the elevation next to the public had toe boarding and safety mesh where required.As standard, there was a one-hour Firewatch after the Bauder membranes have been installed using a gas torch. This was carried out by Procladd operatives each day when they were working on the project to ensure the welfare of the workforce, and the safety of other trades and that of the building. The 19kg gas cylinders were used on this project as they are easily transportable on the roof area. A dynamic, highly flexible building at the University of Cambridge has been fitted with Junckers solid wood flooring as part of a light-filled interior scheme. The West Hub, designed by Jestico+Whiles, is a hybrid building designed to cater for students, commercial tenants, and members of the public. A focus on fostering connection and collaboration through thoughtfully designed interlinking spaces is evident in the interior, which is bright, open, and welcoming. The new building combines structured spaces with generous circulation areas for breakout and informal social and study use. The large, light-filled rooms make use of Junckers Nordic Oak Harmony flooring finished in ultra matt lacquer as an ideal backdrop. Using materials in paler shades helps maximise levels of natural light reflected into the space, supporting user wellbeing as well as minimising reliance on artificial lighting. A large plate-steel orange staircase, clad in Junckers Nordic Oak, zigzags its way through the main atrium, providing a visual and circulatory focal point as well as connecting the building vertically. Each of the floors in the building were designed with a different ambiance in mind, from a vibrant and lively ground floor housing a café and dining area, to a more relaxed, calmer first floor and a quiet upper floor intended for study. The building has achieved BREEAM Excellent and adopts many aspects of the WELL standard, including plenty of natural light and elements of biophilic design. On the lower ground floor hospitality areas, plants and trees have been integrated into the interior, which coupled with Junckers solid hardwood flooring provides an environment with a connection to nature, an element proved to support wellbeing as well as performance. An ideal choice for a busy, user-focused building, A pre-finished, solid hardwood floor from Junckers has a perfectly smooth surface and cannot harbour dust or mites. As an all-natural material, wood contributes to an even and balanced indoor climate as it helps maintain temperature in a room and reduces static from electrical equipment. All Junckers’ floors hold the Danish Indoor Climate label and have undergone extensive degassing and odour testing to ensure there are no chemical substances in the flooring. Junckers also complies with EU legislation REACH. The floor was installed by PICA Floorings Ltd. 

The Hilda Besse building at St Antony’s College, Oxford, one of the country’s best examples of Post-War architecture, has been refurbished by award-winning architectural and heritage consultancy practice Purcell. As part of a sensitive renovation to enhance the original architecture and ensure the building’s sustainable future, Junckers solid wood flooring was fitted throughout the common rooms, kitchens and the dining hall. Informed by historic drawings and photographs, Purcell specified a dark wooden floor, reverting to the original finish found in the building. Junckers Black Oak plank flooring was fitted in a bespoke geometric pattern designed by the architect, complementing the elaborate ceiling features. Junckers’ Approved Flooring Contractor V. A. Hutchison Flooring sampled the bespoke pattern on site and created all the joints and cuts with their own bespoke methods, specially adapted for such intricate work. The result is an elegant floor fit for purpose, offering both a grand impression and a durable floor surface. Junckers Black Oak is made by mimicking the natural process known as ‘bog oak’ where timber left submerged in bog conditions takes on a rich, dark colour. The colour is drawn deep into the wood, unlike a surface stain. This unique method enables sanding and refinishing of the floor without loss of colour. Specifying a solid hardwood floor for the Grade II listed building ensures longevity of both design and use. A Junckers floor has a long lifespan and will last for generations. Part of the refurbishment and conservation work included improving the building’s sustainable performance as well as the wellbeing of staff and students. A solid hardwood floor from Junckers is one of the most sustainable flooring surfaces available. Junckers has completed EPDs for its wooden floors to ensure all elements of the supply chain, from raw material sourcing to production and distribution, adhere to strict sustainability standards. Wood is naturally low in embodied carbon and can easily be recycled at the end of its long life. Wooden floors contribute to a healthy indoor environment by maintaining an even temperature and counter-acting static from electrical appliances. All Junckers wood floors carry the Danish Indoor Climate Label, ensuring there are no chemical substances in the flooring which adversely affect the air quality in a room. The main contractor for the project was CBRE. 

FlexEJ has completed the design and fabrication of a batch of metal expansion joints for a UK pharmaceuticals manufacturer.Specifying an expansion joint in a pharmaceutical production line can be problematic. For this project, the piping design required expansion joints but a fundamental requirement was ease of cleaning and a complete avoidance of product retention.A possible solution could have been a pharmaceutical rubber expansion joint which is crevice free but its inherent design limits its flexibility and – as with any rubber expansion joint – it has a relatively low operating temperature limit.This formed the basis of the specification brought to FlexEJ’s engineering team. The design case was to meet 270 Deg. C and 10 Bar G with a high degree of flexibility so a metal bellow would be best suited to this application. But in a conventional bellow or expansion joint the convolutions are prone to retain product or contaminants. A liner can sometimes be used but again product can get behind the liner so the problem is not entirely eliminated.So how to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness inside the bellow once installed and in operation? The solution lay in designing a specific ‘open’ convolution profile which prevents contaminants getting lodged within the joint. The team’s clever design of profile, combining with the unit being used in vertical alignment leads to the bellow being self-draining – and at all movement positions. To achieve the high levels of purity and cleanliness required for this application’s flowing media, the bellow had to be fabricated in 316 stainless steel with a very high surface finish.The expansion joint also includes threaded mounting bars – these enable the bellows to be contracted slightly to enable easy removal from the pharmaceutical line when required. The smooth, polished rods seen in the image here are limit bars to prevent accidental over-extension. Each joint is also fitted with pharmaceutical grade aseptic flanges – smooth on the inside and sealed with an ‘o’ ring. 5500m2 of Optima TFC+ has been used in the completion of the brand new Science, Engineering and Environment building on Salford University’s Peel Park campus.As you can see from the photos, a striking colour palette has been used in the modified window interface details. Interpon’s D2525 Ostuni Y2211I, 3030 High Gloss & 7022 High Gloss in 3.0mm Aluminium 3103 Grade PPC were selected.The unique overhang window details were created using the 20mm overlapping joint that is standard in Optima TFC+. A bespoke sharp edge detail was added to window interface locations for dramatic effect, creating a stunning visual contrast between the bright red window pods against the white vertical cladding as per the architect’s original design intent.Sotech assembled a full-size sample rig in the factory for the client, architect, main contractor and installer to view a full scale mock-up of the final proposed solution. This ensured that any design details or install sequences were scrutinised and fully understood before the project began onsite. Sotech then created a full 3D model of the project alongside their long-term partners Metclad Contracts. This allowed both parties to identify and avoid potential issues at the design stage before panels were fabricated and delivered to site.The SEE Building is Salford University’s brand new £65 million hub for discovery and innovation. Having purchased the lands from the Golf Club, Cosgrave Developments wanted to ensure the natural contours of the existing grounds were maintained when building the public amenity park – Honeypark – which is the centrepiece of their development.As a focal meeting point the area contained mature parklands with a man-made lake and childrens play area as the main attraction. With this area being lower in the development a safe, durable and visually pleasing design was needed, Mick Cosgrave chose AG’s Ground TerraPave® natural aggregate flags to meet the specification, with its durable finish and low slip resistance it met all the safety criteria for this major walkway.When laid it’s visually impressive surface draws you to the central focal point of the scheme. The acoustic underlay achieves the Approved Document E UK Building Regulations (The Resistance to the Passage of Sound) performance standards for Floor Type 1.Resilient 250 was bonded to the concrete base with the Sonixx SX900 adhesive in the living areas of 255 apartments. An 8mm PU foam underlay (Super 8) was loose laid over Resilient 250 and a Cavalier carpet stretch fitted on top.In the bathroom areas the Forbo Surestep Laguna vinyl was installed directly onto the Resilient 250 using F46 (Pressure Sensitive Acrylic Adhesive) from F. Ball and Co Ltd.Resilient 250 is a 2.5mm thick, high performing acoustic underlay manufactured using sponge rubber. It achieves an acoustic performance of 19 dB (ΔLw), significantly reducing the transmission of impact sound. It consists of 300 rooms as well as business and meeting facilities. The building is directly connected to Heathrow’s Terminal 4 via an air bridge and also offers convenient access to the London Underground, Heathrow Express train service and nearby major motorway routes. We were instructed to supply and install more than 600 metres of balustrades, as well as over 300 metres of wall fixed handrails during the hotel’s construction phase. The balustrades used for the project were 1.5kn structural glass balustrades to bridges and 0.74kN loading stainless steel with glass balustrade to stairs. We provided approximately 300 metres of structural glass balustrades to the hotel’s link bridges. At the design stage of the project, we were advised that the bridges could deflect by 25mm, so our balustrade design had to accommodate this. The solution was simple but very effective – we left a 5mm gap in between each five-metre length of track, which was not noticeable when walking along the bridges but allowed for adequate movement in the structure with no damage to the balustrades or the finishes, and no compromise to the overall look. In addition, we adapted our handrail system to provide protection to the walls where guests wheel trollies and luggage into the hotel. By fixing handrails along the flooring close to the walls, it provided a functional yet attractive solution to avoid any marks or scratches that luggage might create.The overall result was a mix of balustrades to the hotel’s stairs and link bridges, plus handrail finishes to the high-traffic areas of the premises that all fit in with the building’s modern and clean design.

The whole shelter is hot dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 but also meets UK structural design laws with EN 1090 accreditation.
