Distribution centre 2.0 becomes sustainable with living walls and roof gardens at Schiphol Trade Park

Distribution centre 2.0 becomes sustainable with living walls and roof gardens at Schiphol Trade Park

Mobilane

For the new distribution centre at Schiphol Trade Park along the A4, living walls have been realised with MobiPanel, the living wall system from Mobilane. With a total surface spanning 750 m2, the facades of the new distribution centre is greened with the latest generation vertical green from Mobilane.Sustainable and innovative distribution centreA lot of attention has been paid to the appearance of the new distribution centre. With the design of Dedato Architecten, sustainability has not only been taken into account on the inside, but also sustainability at the outside of the building has been taken into consideration by including nature-inclusitivity. Dick Venneman, architect and owner of Dedato Architecten tells: “It is a building with its own characteristic appearance, a landmark from the highway. The building is in its materials friendly and accessible. The different surfaces in the facade gives it a human approach. The living walls and the vertically placed solar panels tells something about the sustainability of the building and plays a role in the preservation of biodiversity in the area”. In addition, the MobiPanel living walls makes the environment more sustainable and improves air quality. The installation of the living walls was carried out by Mobicare in collaboration with Zoontjens Boomprojecten. In addition to the living walls, Zoontjens also installed two large roof gardens with various trees, shrubs and 2,600 MobiRoof ECO sedum cassettes totalling 650 square metres.Distribution centre 2.0 Schiphol Trade ParkThe building spans 30.000 m2 of which 3000 m2 is available for offices. Under the distribution centre, there is a car park spanning 7500 m2 with space for 270 cars. The construction of the new distribution centre began in 2020 and is delivered by Dijkham Bouw BV. “From the environment, wellbeing and to prevent a paved environment, for the design it has been chosen to implement living walls, green roofs and ground level. We are very satisfied about this procedure. The execution is very good, the communication was good”, according to Marcel Smeets – Coordinator at Dijkham Bouw BV. The distribution centre was developed by Minerva Development. Minerva Development is an independent developer with years of experience in the development and realisation of business premises. “Since Schiphol Trade Park has set the goal of becoming one the most sustainable logistics centre, as developers we were very happy to take on the challenge. Next to all other facilities such as solar panels, we have opted for a lot of greenery in the design. Not only on the facades, but also in the surroundings of the building and on the roof. We are very happy with the end result and proud of the fact that because of the living walls, this is by far the most beautiful DC in the area. We are very curious about what the result will be over a few months when everything is in bloom”, Bob Lukassen – Minerva Development.Latest generation vertical greenFor greening the distribution, it was chosen for the new living wall system MobiPanel from Mobilane. MobiPanel is an innovative, sustainable and lightweight system for living walls. It is a modular and circular system consisting of omega profiles and pregrown plant cassettes (40 x 40 cm), provided with an automatic irrigation and drainage system. The plants in the cassettes receive water through capillary action. MobiPanel can be installed on flat or curved walls and is suitable for different types of walls, including certain types of sandwich panels. For the facades of the new distribution centre, sandwich panels from Cladding Point have been used. “With Mobilane, as a global expert with many years of experience, we can continue to lead the way in innovation and sustainability. Cladding Point and Mobilane are ready for the future together”, Frank Janssen – Managing Director at Cladding Point. Sliding Louvre Doors - Supplied For a Beautiful Garden Space in Goring-On-Thames

SUNSHIELD Unique Louvres

We recently completed a noteworthy project, supplying custom-designed sliding louvre doors for a delighted customer in Goring-On-Thames. Nestled alongside the picturesque River Thames in South Oxfordshire, Goring is known for its charming village and serene surroundings. The star of this project is a stunning detached house that now boasts the distinctive touch of Sunshield's sliding louvre doors. These panels, meticulously crafted to perfection, cover an expansive area, each measuring just over 5 square meters. While two of these panels gracefully glide along rails spanning 4.8 meters, the third panel commands an impressive 10-meter rail. One of the key highlights of this installation is the meticulous attention to detail. To ensure a flawless and seamless appearance, the rails were seamlessly integrated into the floor and ceiling during the house's construction phase. This thoughtful approach not only enhances the aesthetics but also guarantees a smooth operation that aligns seamlessly with the house's architectural integrity. The sliding frames of these louvre doors are made with Western Red Cedar louvres, positioned at a precise 25-degree angle. This angle not only offers a visually appealing touch but also allows for captivating views through the panels. While the wooden louvers remain fixed, the sliding panels effortlessly glide from left to right and back again, all operated manually for ease and convenience. In terms of aesthetics, these sliding louvre doors are coated in RAL 7016 anthracite grey, lending a modern and sophisticated touch to the house's façade. However, these panels are not just about looks; they serve a trifecta of functions. First and foremost, they provide effective protection against both wind and sun, ensuring that the residents can enjoy their outdoor spaces in comfort, regardless of the weather. Secondly, they contribute significantly to the house's overall aesthetic appeal, blending seamlessly with the owner's vision and elevating the property's curb appeal. This project stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering not just louvre doors, but transformative solutions that enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and comfort of outdoor spaces. With Sunshield's sliding louvre doors, this Goring-On-Thames residence now enjoys a unique and dynamic architectural element that not only adds value but also elevates the overall living experience.

The Temperate House, Kew Gardens, London - Cast Iron Ventilation Floor Grilles

The Temperate House, Kew Gardens, London - Cast Iron Ventilation Floor Grilles

Britannia Metalwork Services Ltd

Originally opened in 1863 and voted 'Best UK National Treasure' at National Geographic Traveller Magazine Reader Awards, the Grade 1 listed, iconic British landmark, The Temperate House at Kew, reopened in 2018 after a major five-year, £41 million restoration. Comprising five pavilions and showcasing over 10,000 new plants from all over the globe, this glass cathedral is the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse, protecting the often rare and tender plants throughout the UK’s cold winters. Commissioned in 2017 by renowned architects Donald Insall Associates - heritage and historic building specialists - and working with ISG, the global construction and engineering company, Britannia designed and manufactured 146 bespoke cast iron floor grilles - a total of 73 linear meters - to house part of the vast new sunken trench heating system. The original inadequate and inefficient heating, ventilation, and irrigation systems were no longer in adequate condition or sufficient for the purpose, and a new biomass underfloor heating system was added to produce ambient temperatures for the plants without impacting the integrity of the building. The finished bare metal design CGA03, meticulously created by our highly experienced pattern makers, echoes the original traditional Victorian grilles found elsewhere within the glasshouse complex and has since become Britannia’s signature grille. We are exceptionally proud to have been chosen and trusted to complete this award-winning project and are equally proud of our teams to produce it – from design, to manufacture, to installation.Frequently referred to as Cathedral, Ecclesiastical, or Victorian decorative floor grilles and as seen here, often placed over channels holding heating pipes, they provide a practical and decorative heating vent. Originally designed for churches they are increasingly popular in private houses, greenhouses, and commercial building developments. Our grilles can be ordered in cast iron or cast aluminium and finished in a wide variety of options. We also work in association with Gunning Heating, making decorative cast iron grilles that fit seamlessly into their underfloor trench heater units.  See our website for a full list of our grille designs and finishes or contact us to discuss your bespoke requirements.

Emshield-DFR used in the Riverside Park and Gardens development in Poplar, East London, to provide fire resistant, multi-directional, high movement, structural joint sealing of floor slabs from below for 120minutes, EI Fire ratings

NCC – Emseal Movement Joints

Fire resistant, multi-directional, high movement, structural joint sealing of floor slabs from below for 120minutes, EI Fire ratings using Emshield-DFR from NCC Movement joints Limited.St William is a division of Berkely Homes, predominantly working on some of the most technically complex regeneration projects on brownfield sites, at the heart of communities across London, and typically with a landscape-led approach. Riverside Park and Gardens is being developed on the former Leven Road Gasworks in Poplar, East London, forming part of the 20 acres Aberfeldy Village scheme. This is an ambitious regeneration project in the borough of Tower Hamlets, with around 3000 new homes, plus shops, offices, cafes, bars, and a cinema, as well as extensive landscaped gardens, play areas, and riverside walks. On this important development by the River Thames, the structural floor slab joints ranged from only 15mm to 25mm wide, but they were subject to high multi-directional movement requirements, plus they required a minimum 120-minute EI Fire Rating to protect the future residents. To add to the complexity, there were shear connectors within the floor slabs that also needed protection to ensure their structural integrity in the event of a fire.An “E120” denotes that the system will not allow flames and hot gases from physically passing through the element for 120 minutes, which also explicitly denotes that the system will achieve 120 minutes ‘Integrity’ (E) and ‘Insulation (I), known as EI120, which therefore also achieves 120 minutes ‘Stability’ (R) in fire.Emshield-DFR-2 provided the ideal solution, and one which could also be rapidly installed from below in a single operation. This specialist work was completed by specialist fireproofing contractors, Gould Sealants Limited, working for Main Contractor, Morris Roe. Emshield-DFR/WFR is an EN-1366-4 tested, fire-rated movement joint, designed to be used in movement joints in exterior and interior walls where a combination of watertightness, fire-rating, sound attenuation, and thermal-efficiency are required. Key performance parameters include:-       Up to 100% joint movement (+/- 50% capability);-       100% watertight joints; -       No mechanical fixings to the structure;-       Accommodate changes in direction between the horizontal and vertical plane;-       Accommodates 3-Dimensional movements (including in shear & vertical, as well as joint expansion and contraction;)-       no additional sound concrete cut-outs required;-       Up to 4-hour fire integrity rating to EN1366-4; -       Up to 4-hour thermal Insulation rating to EN1366-4;-       High acoustic insulation & barrier performance; -       CE Approved and MarkedFor more information:Contact: David Mackay Tel: 01257 266696NCC Movement Joints Limited

Drapers Garden, London - JAKOB Rope and Rod Green Wall Incorporating Bat Boxes to contribute to wildlife habitats.

MMA Architectural Systems Ltd

In order to achieve the BREEAM rating of “Excellent”, the fourteen storey building, constructed in 2009 in London’s Bank Conservation Area, incorporated several sustainable features, including our rope and rod Green Wall System. To create the ideal habitat for wildlife, the green wall design included bat boxes; providing a safe place for bats in the city.Green walls can be used in cities to help improve the local air quality by trapping dust and pollutants; in addition to absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Green walls can also be used as an effective graffiti deterrent in areas where this is an issue, as green walls make the application of graffiti to structures near impossible, and this is just one of many benefits of green walls. Additionally, the green wall is helping to provide cleaner air in the urban environment – and looks great!

That is why they decided to become members of RHS Garden Wisley, which boasts a fully accessible Changing Places toilet next to the Welcome building.RHS Garden Wisley is one of the UK’s best-loved gardens, attracting over a million visitors each year. WoodBlocX Ltd

The Slessor Gardens, in the main parkland of Dundee’s new central waterfront area, is 10,738sqm in size and designed to be a multi-functional space with the capacity to host large events. The team at Optimised Environments focused on developing an area which people could interact with and explore. The design of the space began with the team looking into the influences that Dundee has had on the world. The impact on Medical Science, the fruit farming and jam industry and the trade routes which took Dundee around the world. The overall design had a focus on history, allowing visitors to uncover the story of Dundee as they wander through the gardens.Nick Tolley, one of the lead designers on the project, highlighted that marrying the hard landscaping with the planting is always the key to success. The team work with contemporary materials alongside more traditional methods, allowing them to explore natural systems and forms as well as geometric patterns, which all feeds into the overall look of the space.4 small plots are located to the east and 4 are located to the west sides of the central grassed area. These plots are to contain a series of themed gardens with the others destined to become pavilions and a children’s play area. Four gardens are themed to reflect Dundee’s historic global connections: The Baltic States, Caribbean, Asia and the Americas and a further four reflect key local connections and industries: The Natural Sciences, Health, Food production and Literature. The formation of these Gardens was completed in June and July 2016.The WoodBlocX Landscaping team working with Nick and Optimised Environment came up with a series of planters that would allow them to showcase the edible and medical gardens. The large planters built for the edible garden have 3 separate sections allowing for a variety of soil conditions to be created, and give the planting the best possible base. Our team were able to take the planters from design to delivery in only a matter of weeks helping to keep the project on track and on time.
