Allgood Ltd

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), which first openedon 6 July 1998, connects around 220 destinationsworldwide with over 71.5 million passengers in 2019.Designed by Foster and Partners, the 550,000m2 terminalwas one of the most ambitious construction projects ofmodern times.Home to over 220 shops and 60 restaurants and with78,000 staff as well as millions of passengers, the airportrequired an ironmongery solution that could last severaldecades and meet the high-performance demands of oneof the world’s busiest international aviation hubs.Working in partnership with Hong Kong-based KeyTechnologies International Ltd (Key Tech), Allgood doorhardware was installed throughout PTB 1 after a detailedinternational tender to select the most suitable productquality, performance, and technical support of all providers. One of the largest ever ironmongery specifications at thetime, valued at over £1 million, this was the beginning of a23-year working relationship with Airport Authority HongKong (AAHK) where Key Tech continues to offer expertadvice, onsite technical support and parts supply for AAHKTechnical Services & Support Team.Today, despite the daily demands of a leading internationalairport, many of the original pieces of ironmongery remainin good working order. This is a testament to the qualityof the specification, the products and the open andtransparent exchanges of users’ requirements betweenAAHK, Key Tech and Allgood that has ensured continuedsafe operations at the airport for over two decades.Allgood’s Modric range was specified throughout theterminal in solid grade 316 stainless steel in all passengerareas and in back-of-house and staff areas. Modric uses premium quality materials and a precisionengineering process designed to createproducts which last. This commitment to qualityminimises waste by significantly extendinglifecycles and virtually eliminating the needfor repairs. While there is the normal wear from over twodecades of heavy usage, there are still noperformance concerns. No dropping of leverhandles, and the springing on lock cases allremain in full working order. An important upgrade was undertaken fiveyears ago as the airport wanted to enhance theholding force on the electromagnetic locks onall boarding gates to improve security. Key Techspent over four months identifying and trialling asuitable replacement that required the minimummodification to the original framed glass doorassembly and deliver improved holding forceand additional security monitoring features. The team also conducted a workshop withairport technicians and maintenance subcontractorsto ensure they were familiar withthe inspection and maintenance of the newelectromagnetic locks.HKIA was so impressed by the new solutionthat it has become the standard requirementand applied throughout PTB 1 and other newterminal buildings Allgood and Key Tech have maintained a positiveworking relationship with AAHK since theoriginal contract for the supply and installationof door furniture for PTB 1, in 1998. The model of mailbox used was the classic COM 2 product which was recessed into the wall. Wall recessed mailboxes are extremely popular in this type of development as they maximise the available space in the area of installation and ensure that all health and safety requirements are achieved in the project walkways. Each mailbox has been number engraved in a contrasting silver infilled colour, allowing both mail delivery personnel and quickly identify which mailbox it is that they need to use. The mailbox engraving correlates to the apartment number of the residents. The COM 2 mailboxes used have been finished in a non-standard IGP Dura colour which was specified by the design team at Barratt London to meet the style requirements of the project. Running around the mailboxes is a surround trim, which provides a clean finish between the mailboxes and the installation wall. All mailboxes use an upgraded locks featuring a matt black finish. Dublin Doors - Challenging Fire Test - Rutland ITS.11204

Dublin Doors - Challenging Fire Test - Rutland ITS.11204

Rutland

About the project:Dublin Doors are a distributor of door leafs to door manufacturers throughout Ireland. Since Brexit, the market in Ireland requires the EN 1634-1 fire testing standard, as opposed to the previously accepted the British Standard BS 476. A customer of Dublin Doors wanted an overhead concealed door closer combined with 44mm thick doors, and it had to pass the EN fire testing standard. The specification of the doors was: (A) 44mm PB hardwood lipped all round door (B) 38mm PB core faced with 3mm mdf, routed with 2mm decorative groove in the faceDublin Doors were very aware that EN testing is widely considered to be more onerous than BS testing. The inclusion of a drop seal was also a point of concern - many companies have found that using drop seals to control smoke can appear to make the fire test harder to pass, with some experiencing prolonged flaming at the threshold. Rutland was able to help by providing its concealed closer ITS.11204, which can be used in 44mm fire doors – one of only a handful of concealed closers on the market that can do this. Rutland was also able to tap into its network of experts and consultants to discuss possible options, to help Dublin Doors to arrive at a combination that met the specification, and was most likely to succeed in the test. Dublin Doors were also required to write a Pre-Test Verification (PTV) before the test – a requirement at many test labs now. Rutland used its expertise in compliance to help complete this specification. The outcome:The results were excellent, with both doors lasting 49 and 51 minutes respectively in the fire test, for what was a 30-minute FD30 doorset, the more onerous European standard EN 1634-1 to achieve – E30. In our experience of fire testing, this is an excellent result for a 44mm solid timber door, and the Rutland team were just as pleased as Dublin Doors that the door, along with its concealed closer, passed with flying colours.

Traditional Windows and Doors for a Historic Pub Renovation and Executive Housing DevelopmentThe Melbourne Arms, a cherished historic pub near Derby, underwent a remarkable transformation into a prestigious executive housing development. To preserve the charm and character of the old English pub, bespoke traditional windows and doors were essential.Restoring the Melbourne ArmsThe Melbourne Arms, a listed building with a rich 228-year history, had fallen into disrepair until Stanton Developments acquired it in 2018. They embarked on a comprehensive restoration of the pub and the creation of five additional houses on the site. Unsuitable extensions were removed, allowing the pub to be transformed into two linked detached four-bedroom family homes. The restoration honoured the original features, including the iconic stacked chimneys and distinctive inglenook fireplace."From the double-height skirting to the reinstated upstairs fireplace, we feel privileged and proud to have renovated this historically significant building," expressed Andy Turner, Stanton Developments.Creating an Enclave of HousesIn addition to the pub restoration, Stanton Developments built five new properties on the site, forming an enclave that harmoniously complemented the landmark pub. Each house was individually designed while respecting the aesthetics of the original structure and blending seamlessly within the local conservation area. The houses were named after former proprietors and notable figures associated with the property's history.Award-winning architect Matthew Montague designed the properties, adding his touch of excellence to Stanton Developments' vision.Gowercroft's ContributionGowercroft, known for their expertise in traditional windows and doors, was selected to provide the windows and doors for the Armsgate Development. The focus was on combining historic styling with modern performance, using the finest materials. Accoya® Windows from the Hardwick Range, featuring flush casement windows, and a selection of Accoya® doors from the Melbourne Range were chosen. To maintain individuality, each house had subtly different front door designs and colours, tailored to the specific property. Elaborate ironmongery and Accoya surrounds distinguished the larger properties, setting them apart.Attention to DetailPreserving the authenticity of the original window design was crucial for the plot that once housed the pub. Gowercroft crafted traditional Georgian bar windows, while also introducing unique triangular-shaped windows that added a touch of originality to the development. The combination of Stanton Developments' commitment to historic restoration and Gowercroft's expertise in traditional windows and doors resulted in a remarkable housing development that seamlessly merged the past with the present.

Lockers, Cubicles and Bespoke Products at Lee Valley Ice Centre

Helmsman

Lee Valley Ice Centre originally opened in 1984, and before closing in 2021 welcomed over 279,000 visitors each year. With the old centre reaching the end of its operational life, it was time to design and build a brand new Ice Centre at Lee Valley Regional Park. The new centre, due to open in April 2023 will be home to 2 new ice rinks, doubling the capacity of the old centre, and inviting in new visitors as well as welcoming back those who visited before. As part of the redevelopment of Lee Valley Ice Centre, 95% of the concrete from the old centre was used in the foundations of the new centre. With this and many other environmentally friendly choices made in the construction, Lee Valley Ice Centre will become the UK’s most sustainable Ice Centre. The fully accessible centre will maximise the opportunity for sports for everyone, and with two Olympic-sized Ice Rinks, a brand-new café, gym, exercise studios and various other facilities, Lee Valley will be able to welcome up to 500,000 visitors. The range of facilities will encourage a variety of new visitors, from committed skaters, though to people stopping for a drink in the café before enjoying the green space in Lee Valley Regional Park.At Helmsman, we were pleased to be contacted by the main contractors for Lee Valley, The Buckingham Group, to supply the lockers, cubicles, vanity units and bespoke high-level cladding. We manufactured and installed 268 Bespoke Heavy Duty Laminate Lockers, with a variety of compartment configurations, and a range of different locking options. Our Heavy Duty Laminate lockers are a great option for high traffic areas, as they are more likely to withstand scratches and dents, so were a perfect choice for Lee Valley Ice Centre. The lockers also feature bespoke perforations in the doors and aluminium number plates. A selection of the lockers also have seat stands with the slats in matching laminate. A variety of locks were also used across the lockers in this project, with Ojmar Hasp locks the main choice for users to use their own padlocks, as well as Ojmar coin return locks and Lowe and Fletcher cam locks. The cubicles chosen for this project were our Front Line Cubicles with Hidden Fixings. These cubicles are tailored to suit the needs of the particular project, with bespoke sizing available. The fixings are hidden to provide a smooth surface and aesthetic finish. The cubicles were manufactured with 12mm Solid Grade Laminate from BioCarbon Laminates in colour Luna Grey, a fantastic carbon-neutral option which aligns perfectly with Lee Valley’s aim to be the first sustainable Ice Centre in the UK.As we manufacture all our products in house, and to order, we specialise in bespoke items. The project at Lee Valley Ice Centre featured bespoke high-level cladding, which our highly experienced installation team fitted on-site.Other products on this project included metal framed IPS panels, using both Luna Grey and Elegant Grey laminates from BioCarbon Laminates, and Helmsman High Pressure Laminate Vanity Units. It was great to work alongside Buckingham Group again for the Lee Valley Ice Centre project.
