Scottish Policy on Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals

Scottish Policy on Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals

Safety Technology International Ltd

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) have announced their new policy on Unwanted Fire Alarm Signals (UFAS) that came into effect at the start of this month. The policy affects all calls to the fire control operators who will confirm a fire before the incident requires the fire service to be dispatched.Scotland have a continuously high rate of false alarms attended by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, with over 57,000 unnecessary journeys a year. This is why the new policy adopts a ‘call challenge’ policy to reduce the number of false fire alarms attended by the service.False fire alarms cause disruption in various ways, from impacting the time and resources of fire and rescue services, implicating people’s safety and harmfully impacting the environment. False alarms are also costly procedures, not only for the Fire Service but also businesses where the false alarm takes place. These UFAS have many detrimental effects:They impact on resources available to attend real fires. They impact on time available for other valuable work, such as training and community safety activities. Where fire crews comprise on-call (retained) fire fighters, the crews may be unnecessarily taken away from their place of work. They impact on road safety, as a result of fire appliances travelling under emergency conditions. They impact on the environment from the number of appliance journeys. The new guidance on safe investigation of unwanted fire alarm signals aims to challenge calls to confirm fire or signs of fire in order to ensure resources and time are being used effectively. However, the SFRS will continue to attend calls received from automatic fire alarm systems and if the signal has been initiated by a manual call point (MCP), heat or smoke detector or sprinkler system, in premises in which people sleep. There will also be fire service attendance in non-sleeping risks if there is physical signs or technological indication of a real fire, such as the fire alarm signal triggered by a manual call point.Although the policy will significantly reduce the number of false alarms attended by fire crews, there is still more to be done to decrease the vast number of unnecessary call outs.Protective covers from STI help to reduce both malicious and accidental activations of manual call points, available in various sizes, mounting options and custom text available to suit all applications. The tough polycarbonate covers have been specifically designed to help deter false alarms and prevent vandalism of various devices. The range of Call Point Protectors are highly effective without restricting legitimate operation of the devices, meaning they are easily accessed in emergency situations. For more information on the new policy, visit the FIA website here: https://www.fia.uk.com/news/guidance-on-safe-investigation-of-fire-alarm-signals-in-scotland.html?utm_source=Fire%20Industry%20Association&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=14001136_June%202023%20MMU

Glasgow architects Bradford Robertson considered a number of options before concluding with main contractors, Morgan Sindall, that our SlowStop bollards would prove a cost effective solution. During a collision, the kinetic energy of the impact is progressively absorbed as the post tilts, compressing an elastomeric sleeve within the base. The post is able to tilt from its vertical position to an angle of 20 before it locks within the base. After the impact the post will return back to its vertical position, ready to perform once again. Home / Blog / Noise Reduction within Flue and Chimney Systems

Schiedel Chimney Systems

The first thoughts about safety at work are always about physical injury prevention as well as inhaling fumes, hazardous substances, etc. However, Occupational Noise, which is the amount of acoustic energy received by an employee of a company, can cause permanent damage if it is continuous. In the UK, The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, came into effect for all industries from April 2008, which is quite late when you consider that the harm hearing loss can cause. Harm such as Tinnitus, which is the perception of noise in the ear or head, caused by a problem with the inner ear.The sustaining of high noise levels can also mask warning signals, prevent concentration and vital communication. Most authorities around the world have agreed that noise becomes dangerous when it’s higher than 85 decibels during a typical 8-hour work shift. However, noises under 85 decibels can also cause issues with the general public who are in and around the working environment. An example below shows the different examples of noise levels in decibels – the definition of noise is sound that is unpleasant or causes disturbance.ReductionIf a noise can’t be reduced by engineering the equipment, then acoustic quieting is required. This is the process of dampening vibrations from machinery and systems such as flue systems. With the increasing demand for noise attenuation, the demand for noise reduction from flues and chimneys in marine and industrial situations mean that many companies have developed their own silencer programmes. These tend to be combined with flue systems to have a product range which is reducing sound at the design stage

Applied to structural steel, Hempacore One expands when exposed to high heat to insulate the steel beneath. In a fire, this can extend the steel’s load-bearing capacity for up to three hours.

As a UK manufacturer, we are well-known as being the only place to visit if you’re looking for high-quality mail and parcel delivery boxes. Our high-quality products used throughout London and the UK are tried and tested by the world’s most prestigious developments.THE PRODUCTThe Safety Letterbox Company worked with the design team at the Rathbone Square project, who provided the branding and style guidelines which the mailboxes had to conform to.The mailboxes were created using multiple facets, which included a bespoke locking plate. They also had non-standard matt black locks and wood veneer. The NEW Tile mailbox used for this development is very different than our standard range. The various components of the mailboxes are entirely customisable and are tailored to meet specific project design requirements. The mailboxes are located in the reception lobby area and through the walkways that the residents use every day. Each mailbox has been recessed into the wall to maximise the space available, ensuring all health and safety requirements are achieved. This version of the tile mailbox is unique from the vast majority of our mailbox range as it does not feature an opening flap. The mail delivery personnel can deliver items quicker, as there is no flap to lift. It also provides a smooth aesthetic appearance. Each mailbox has engraved numbering in a contrasting matt black and ‘Gotham’ font, specified by the client to conform to other signages within the project. Every mailbox has two uniquely coded keys offering maximum security.

Guldmann Limited

No more compromises between contemporary architecture and accessibility:How aesthetic demands and functional necessities come together can be witnessed in the Niederrad district in Frankfurt. The construction measures for accessibility discreetly integrated into the entrance area, deliberately allowing the building and its exterior to take the forefront visually. Using local materials, the Stepless Platform lift SLP C was custom-made for the stone staircase, making it nearly invisible when retracted. It provides visitors and employees with limited mobility an easy access across the height difference into the building.
