A high specification sound absorption solution...GRAHAM Construction were appointed to lead the refurbishment of Senate House, part of the University of London which is to house the School of Oriental & African Studies. SOAS is the world’s leading institution for languages, cultures and societies of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.The plan is to improve the student experience significantly by offering state-of-the-art facilities, with a high specification sound absorption solution for reverberation control in the Teaching Rooms, Seminar Rooms, Meeting Halls, Study Units and Lecture Theatres.Increased sound absorption helps to improve speech transmission quality, sometimes as much as 35%, control echo as well as background noise and reduce reverberation times in teaching areas.The SOAS project will accommodate a 25% planned increase of the cosmopolitan student numbers, with staff and students together on one centrally located campus, so reverberation control is paramount in this instance.We have undertaken the supply & installation of 2,650 sq metres of the Absorb-R GypLine αw Acoustic Plaster along site our installation partner UK Acoustics. The Absorb-R GypLine αw system includes 25mm and 39mm Acoustical Absorption Boards which can be fitted direct to soffit, to a shallow narrow void track-line carrier ceiling or a deep void MF Ceiling Grid. The boards are then sanded and treated with a 3mm acoustic spray plaster with a choice of finishes. The Absorb-R GypLine αw System finishes can then be colour coated to any RAL top coat colour and provides a virtually seamless monolithic ceiling with high and exceptional sound absorption levels that meet or exceed typical reverberation criteria.

Last year, fast food chain Burger King added forty-eight new restaurants to their rapidly growing portfolio. Twinfix were approached by Ideal Building Systems to design, manufacture & install canopies and Brise Soleils at three of the sites in Kent, Clacton-on-Sea and Swindon.With over 30 years’ experience the Twinfix Technical Team had no problems designing structures to suit the requirements and budget of the client.Twinfix’s expert team designed, manufactured, and installed a brise soleil which covered all four sides of the restaurant at the first site in Swindon and fabricated lean to mono-pitch canopies with squared posts and 3mm thick solid aluminium sheet for roof, complete with brise soleil for rear, sides and front at the restaurants in Kent and Clacton-on-Sea.The structures served two purposes, while providing shelter, they also enhanced the aesthetics of the restaurants and complemented the building’s exterior.Each canopy spans 35 square metres and the roof comprises of pressed aluminium roof at a reduced pitch to fit inside the 150 depths of our frame, concealed gutters and downpipes and prepared for soffits by another contractor. The roofs were powder coated in RAL 3020 Traffic Red and squared aluminium posts powder coated to RAL 9006 White Aluminium.The Brise Soleils are constructed from our 150 x75 rectangular hollow section and had to accommodate some wiring for lights that were installed later by another contractor. These are a striking addition to the building fascia.The design of the proposed future sites look set to follow the same format and we look forward to working with Ideal Building Systems on the upcoming projects.

Architectural fabrication specialist Metalline worked closely with Associated Architects, Glassolutions and United Anodisers to produce a range of bespoke rainscreen panels in anodised silver and a striking two tone striped anodised bronze to enhance the brick and glazed façade of the new centre. The two tone bronze effect is a first for the UK and one that Metalline rigourously tested and trialed in conjunction with partnering anodisers. Over 3000m2 of aluminium rainscreen panels were supplied in varying lengths up to 4000mm length x 2000mm wide. The panels were then individually referenced and then installed together to achieve the desired effect. In addition Metalline also supplied fascias and soffits together with their range of perforated rainscreen panels, finished in a black polyester powder coating that added a further dimension to the finish of the building’s façade. With over 30 years experience and an enviable reputation nationwide, Metalline have successfully developed into one of the leading fabricators of specialist architectural metalwork in the UK. Their latest state of the art manufacturing equipment and extended production capability allows a highly skilled workforce to deliver precision engineered metalwork on time and to exact specification. Newton contractor Rymill Property Developments were approached by the owner of an old vineyard in Hampshire, in order to redevelop the site. As well as building an immaculate four-bedroom, four-bathroom Georgianhouse for the client, Rymill also took on the task of creating 3 brand new, modern properties, all with basements built into the existing sloping site. The large, partially retained basement areas would all house a stairwell, plantroom, storage room, cinema room, zen room, two ensuite double bedrooms and a garden room, and so required a completely dry internal environment.

The Hale Country Club has a rural setting but only four miles from the hustle and bustle of Manchester airport. When the Hut Group purchased the club they looked to enhance the appearance throughout the facility. Phase two was the health suite and vitality pool. Sauna360 designed four new thermal rooms in the area and replaced the existing grp tiled vitality pool with a beautiful stainless steel design. The internal space was opened up with large glass frontage to all but the steam room. Two feature showers with cool mists and tropical rain were added together with an ice station.

Cembrit, leading cladding and building board specialist has launched Unipan, a versatile tile backing board which is ideally suited for internal ‘wet’ applications. Unipan is lightweight, tough, and stable, and offers a solid base for tiling through its excellent adhesion properties. The boards are manufactured from a material that is a mix of cement and aggregate, which also contains polystyrene beading to reduce the weight of the board allowing for easy on-site manoeuvrability and quick installation. Unipan features flat, reinforced tapered edges that are specifically designed for a good join, which is critical in wet applications such as bathrooms.

Abu Dhabi Airport Company signed a contract for the construction of infrastructure integral to the Abu Dhabi International Airport expansion. The project was set to be delivered across multiple work fronts including airside and landside airport operational areas. Surespan was asked to supply a number of 2-hour fire-rated, FACTA Class AA, SAC floor hatches with a free-standing guard rail to three sides and a hinged gate. In addition to this, a number of Grade 304 Stainless Steel roof hatches with a unique ‘sandblasted’ finish and built-on non-penetrative SureGuard hand railing were also supplied.

The Tarkett Floorcraft Design team was commissioned to create the customized dance floor, using artwork supplied by Allen International. At four meters in diameter, the intricate and highly-detailed design uses contrasting shades of the Luxury Vinyl Tile iD Inspiration 70 flooring in light oak and dark walnut. Instead of being printed, each piece of the design was individually cut using a precision sonic blade that oscillates at 20,000 cycles per second. The pieces were then assembled onto a solid vinyl core like a jigsaw puzzle, before having a thick layer of transparent PVC added onto the top.

St. Bartholomew’s Hospital was originally founded in 1123 and the latest design was handled by architects HOK International Ltd, as part of a major redevelopment, which involved the hospital staying open during construction.Key features of the design are four Pendock Radius column casings that span the floor to ceiling height of almost 18 metres, which are located on one side of the main atrium. In addition, a further 65 casings of between 2.7 and 4.1 metres in height were installed on different floors within corridors, waiting rooms and admin areas. All casings were bespoke manufactured.

Monsoon Accessorize is a privately owned British company with two internationally renowned clothing brands: Monsoon and Accessorize. HMM Architects asked Planet to provide a specification for all the internal glazing and partitioning for the client’s striking new head quarters, known as the Yellow Building. On the lower ground floor, Planet Partitioning’s demountable p100DG double glazing provides frontage to all executive offices and meeting rooms. At the centre of the building, Planet AG installed full-height atrium glazing to the working areas looking directly into the atrium. On the top floor, Planet AG installed six-metre high glass partitioning.

Modular skylights improving office and warehouse conditions using natural lightThe VELUX Modular Skylight system was installed as part of a new combined office and warehousing space for third generation fabric design company, ROMO Fabrics. The use of natural light proved essential to the project and so 348 modules of the VELUX Modular Skylight system were specified and installed across the building. This included a VELUX Ridgelight solution to accentuate the entrances of the atrium and offer a glimpse of the internal space, as well as a VELUX Northlight solution within the office and design studios to provide soft, reflective lighting and a natural feel to the workspace.

Oakhill Avenue is a three-story residential dwelling located in Hampstead. This 65m² complete refurbishment includes a basement extension, internal structural alterations, facade refurbishment, and complete prime-level fit-out, including M&E, audio-visual, joinery installations and landscaping.Cellecta YELOfon HD5 was specified on this project for its excellent acoustic properties specifically designed to reduce impact noise through the concrete floors with a floating screed. It is a lightweight, easy-to-install, non-crosslinked polyethene foam.Neston Construction LTD was awarded the contract to refurbish this three-story residential dwelling located in Hampstead.

The co-educational secondary school with academy status, included the construction of a two-storey technology block and plant room, adding 18 classrooms and associated facilities.Awarded to Morgan Sindall by the Department for Education under its priority schools building project, it was vital for the internal Orbis balustrades with vertical bar infills to be designed at the extra height of 1250mm to comply with the recent changes to DfE guidance.

The Farmiloe Building, with its faded Victorian industrial charm, was last year’s venue for celebrating and awarding innovative design across the hospitality industry. This fascinating Grade II Listed building made an exciting venue for the 5th anniversary of the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. Attended by over 600 leading international architects, designers and operators, the architecture and engineering of the Farmiloe Building was complemented by five uniquely designed ‘Box Project’ spaces, each conceived by dedicated teams for the Awards, and where Breezefree’s 115sqm retractable canopy created a striking counterpart to Nicholas Alexander Creative Construction’s theatrical alfresco kitchen area.

Delivering elegance, functionality and improving the building’s use of natural daylight – whilst also guaranteeing smooth and reliable access – the sophisticated dormakaba KTV Atrium Glass revolving door proved ideal for George House, Glasgow's office block. Acting as an effective environmental barrier between the internal and external environments, the dormakaba KTV revolving door limits warm air loss and cold air intake, helping to reduce the building’s energy consumption and subsequent expense. The KTV ATRIUM revolving door systems are ideal for installation in entrance areas where effective environment control and elegant aesthetics are desired.

Eurosafe Solutions undertook the challenge and provided a safety solutions to Scotland’s Largest Art Installation, the Kelpies. Working alongside the main contractor on the project, SH Structures, Eurosafe Solutions supplied and installed an internal ladder within each of the horse heads, one 19 meters high and another 21 meters high whilst also providing rope access assistance to the installers of the structures external cladding. The ladders provided by Eurosafe Solutions consist of multiple sections of Glideloc “Y” spar ladder sections, with a pivot section at the front of each which can be locked to prevent unauthorised use.

AEM Demolition undertook the heavy side building works of the 35,000 square feet M&M World in London. AEM required an access solution to provide reliable, durable and easy access to the building’s underfloor services. Howe Green’s 5000 Series Stainless Steel access covers were selected. The covers were installed in a range of different internal areas as well as with a wide variety of different types of flooring, including bright red resin, painted concrete and carpet. Designed and built to withstand the pressures of high volume pedestrian traffic, the covers have a 1 hour fire rating.

Modern, light, open, inviting – this is the new look of the office rooms at Warren Wixen Real Estate in Los Angeles. The same applies to the solution developed by architects HLW International LLP in cooperation with Pulp Studio. Glass from floor to ceiling – not only a functionally convincing approach but also a concept with a high degree of aesthetic appeal. Pulp Studio's recommendation of using the Interzum award-winning HAWA Puro 100–150 hardware for all-glass sliding doors defined the perfect solution. Concealed suspension made it possible to achieve the ideal of "glass from floor to ceiling".

When Somerset House Studios based artist and researcher Phoebe Davies needed a design-orientated flooring that would also help highlight the sport aspects of her first solo show ‘Points of Rupture’ she turned to leading, International sport and vinyl flooring specialist, Gerflor. ‘Points of Rupture’ uses video, sound and installation to explore themes of tactility, training and recovery of athletes engaged in contact sports. The concept arose from Davies’ own on-going recovery from a basketball injury in parallel with her research work into contact-based sport with a group of teenage, female wrestlers in Norway.

In 2018 South Ayrshire Council appointed main contractor Portakabin to build a proposed new state-of-the-art Early Years Centre in Ayr, Scotland. The £2.2 million Cherry Tree Early Years Centre development now provides the largest modular modern learning environment in Scotland. Ensuring that children and staff would have a safe and comfortable environment was at the forefront of the specification process and needed to include the best quality flooring possible. The final choice of products was awarded to international flooring specialist Gerflor, who supplied 300m2 of their Taralay Impression Comfort and award-winning Taralay Impression Control products.

In a recent refurbishment of their main sports hall the choice of the playing indoor surface underwent a rigorous specification process. The hugely important decision would demand that only the best products be used and the final specification would settle on some 610m2 of Taraflex® vinyl sports flooring in ‘Maple’ from international flooring specialist Gerflor. Anthony Mynett, Director, Carpet Services (Cardiff) Ltd commented, “we are the preferred flooring contractor at the college and chose Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring as it conformed perfectly to the college’s requirements.” Adding, “Taraflex Evolution is unique as it covers a Granwood floor surface.”

Kingham Hill School was originally built by the Christian philanthropist Charles Edward Baring Young in 1886. Today, with just over 340 pupils, it caters for both girls and boys aged 11-18. When it was decided to replace and re-develop the main sports hall at Kingham Hill, the aspects of quality, performance, looks and durability would be pivotal in the final flooring specification. The school turned to international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply 770m2 of its world renowned Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring in Blue and Pink to provide the high performing, multi-use solution it was seeking.

To operate at optimum capacity, the Ricoh Arena required a floor access solution to reach under floor services carrying water, drainage, electricity and data to internal and external leisure amenities. Staff at the arena also needed to carry out regular checks on under soil heating, sprinkler systems and floodlighting. Kirkstall Forge has carried great historical significance in the city of Leeds. Dating back to the 12th Century its rich heritage includes metal works, iron production and engineering, and once the canal and railway arrived, Kirkstall Forge became a key site in the industrial revolution. At an architect’s new timber frame home, high racking strength and airtightness were crucial in the internal lining specification. With the installation of 240 sheets of SMARTPLY AIRTIGHT (was VapAirTight), the house achieved an air change rate (n50) of 0.09 air changes per hour at 50Pa – six times better than recommended by the PassivHaus Institute. The stylish two-storey house incorporates a range of ecological materials and systems. But with large glazed areas and two cantilevers at the rear and side, the project required a structural panel that combined racking strength with exceptional airtightness – for which SMARTPLY AIRTIGHT proved ideal.

Neaco supplied an extensive balustrade specification to help transform a Grade II Listed former Post Office and Telephone Exchange into Grade A contemporary offices in Sheffield. SDA Architects designed the comprehensive internal revamp of the property, built in the 1920s, to create Steel City House comprising 60,000 square feet of prime commercial space across five storeys. When The Oval cricket ground recently underwent a major extension, Bostik was on hand to provide subfloor preparation products and technical advice to ensure the flooring couldbe installed to the highest possible standard in time fora high-profile event.The iconic south-London venue is home to Surrey County Cricket Club and frequently hosts international matches and tournaments. The Oval was seeking to add two new upper-tier decks that would increase its capacity by 4,000 seats, as well as a new hospitality area including lounges, a roof terrace,a retail space, a new ticket office and more.

Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset, United Kingdom, houses more than 400 cars and motorcycles. The museum opened in 1985 to showcase the personal collection of John Haynes OBE, publisher of Haynes Manuals. Charitable Trust museum management decided that the site was due for renovation. A two-plus year refurbishment resulted in a modernized museum that incorporates an S-shaped glass two-story foyer, and inside the numerous buildings, renovations continue to allow for more exhibits. Before the renovation, the museum had not incorporated fall protection anywhere onsite, but management saw the timing as appropriate for its introduction.

The Dogs Trust holds a special place in the heart of the canine loving public. The national charity’s Cardiff Rehoming Centre sets an incredible benchmark of facilities to ensure rescue dogs get the best chance of a happy and healthy future. Run by devoted staff, the centre includes 20 exercise paddocks, a training hall, 74 kennels with underfloor heating and a fully equipped grooming suite. A pawsome attention to every need The project is located on an eight-acre brownfield site and comprises a campus of strategically located pavilion buildings. The buildings to the north are open to the public, offering training, rehoming services with conference facilities. These buildings are focused around a feature 'Piazza' providing a pedestrian link between the buildings and a place for people to meet. The 'working' buildings are reserved for training and rehabilitation. The heart of the development is the main reception structure, which contains kennels, education areas, a veterinary wing and conference/meeting room facilities, along with specialist and ancillary spaces. Contemporary and exciting…but not lavish The Dog Trust’s primary yellow corporate identity is picked out strongly on feature walls and other elements, whilst most exterior elevations and interiors adhere to whites and greys and a limited number of materials. Oliver Henshall of Cardiff-based project architects, Powell Dobson, spoke about the project, “Because the Dog’s Trust is a charity we were mindful that, while creating contemporary and exciting architecture and interiors, neither should appear as if money had been lavished on them. After all, the dogs should always be the priority in terms of funding allocation. With that in mind, we liked the idea of leaving the services exposed, dressing internals with just the essentials.
