Patients will benefit from a carefully-designed unit that puts their needs first, providing a sturdy, hygienic, and attractive environment conducive to optimal recovery. Tim Fletcher, Estates Capital Project Officer at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, said: “We have used DBFS for a number of years, either by direct award contracts or through third party contractors. The products they have supplied for our Stroke Unit refurbishment project are strong and robust, so are suited to a healthcare environment. Each of the high-specification homes offers two bedrooms, underfloor heating, bi-fold doors to a private garden, and off-road parking, all within a few short steps to the town’s high street.Planning restrictions associated with the conservation area required the use of traditional materials, including timber, sliding sash windows, slate roofs, chimney stacks and brickwork that would match Handley Street’s older buildings, which are built in a vibrant orange brick featuring textural deviation and which was excavated locally. For the new properties, Forterra’s Butterley Breckland Multi Reserve was selected as a good match to the older brick. Varying bonds, that show stretchers as well as headers, have been introduced in the main facing brickwork, complementing the older properties nearby.

Powrmatic Ltd

OverviewKEA Dublin is a 2787m² shopping centre in Ballymun Ireland which required a full smoke ventilation system from Powrmatic.Project BackgroundIKEA Dublin is 30,000 square-foot shopping centre in Ballymun Ireland which required a full smoke ventilation system from Powrmatic.Project SolutionPowrmatic supplied 73 Roof Opensky smoke ventilators to the new IKEA store in Dublin. Specified and installed by Air Design Systems Ltd, the installation is providing full smoke ventilation to five separate areas within the store. The second area is the show room and café which were naturally ventilated by louvred ventilators and split into zones using a fixed smoke curtain. A similar approach was taken with the self-serve warehouse and checkout area, which was also naturally ventilated using louvred ventilators and fixed smoke curtains. Polycarbonate blades are used on the louvred ventilators to allow natural light to enter the spaces. Additionally, the escape staircases were ventilated using louvred ventilators at the head of the stairs and a local control panel with an emergency break glass.Project Result“We were involved from the very early in the design stages of the project, using our knowledge and experience of installations within other IKEA stores and warehouses to engineer a suitable, cost-effective solution,” recalled  Air Design Systems Ltd Director Alan Clare.“Within these works we have had to include for three separate main control panels, all electrical wiring run in fire-protected cable, local control panels with emergency break glasses and a mimic control panel linking all smoke ventilation zones. We also provided rain sensors, roof access hatches, and head of lift shaft cowls,” he added.Due to the success of the project, there was a requirement within a year of opening to extend the warehouse area. Air Design Systems Ltd was awarded the sub-contract to extend the system into the new space and link back to the existing control system. In total, a further 14 Powrmatic ventilators were installed in the warehouse roof & walls and at the head of the two additional emergency staircases.Powrmatic’s Roof Opensky ventilators are attractive, low-profile units that have been specifically designed for both smoke and heat exhaust and natural ventilation applications. The Opensky can be roof or wall mounted for exhaust or inlet and can be supplied with a hinged base for use as an access hatch. They are tested for use as smoke ventilators to BS EN 12101-2.

Woodland Discovery Centre

Polyroof Products Ltd

The JG Graves Woodland Discovery Centre is being constructed in the Ecclesall Woods Sawmill as part of the Sheffield Woodlands Environment Enhancement Project. The centre runs craft courses all through the year from cider making to wood work skills. Public events in the autumn and spring celebrate Sheffield’s rich woodland heritage and demonstrates the unique facilities of the centre, as well as providing activities such as story telling, discovering nature and traditional uses of wood in the home and garden. The SolutionThe project entailed designing a center that harmoniously blended with the enchanting surrounding woodlands. The main building featured a grand ‘ski slope’ style roof, initially planned to be waterproofed using metal sheets. However, the client quickly realised that this approach would be prohibitively expensive. To meet the client’s requirements for a cost-effective alternative that maintained the intended appearance, they turned to Charlesworth Contractors—a Polyroof approved contractor with a proven track record of excellence. Recognizing the need for a swift and efficient waterproofing solution, we recommended the BBA Approved Polyroof 185 System with Lead Roll Effect trims. The first step involved fixing high-quality plywood boards onto the roof’s support beams to create the ski-slope shape. This foundation was then enhanced with GRP trims meticulously applied to replicate the appearance of traditional lead rolls. Finally, our renowned Polyroof 185 System was expertly installed, swiftly forming a seamless and highly durable waterproofing membrane. The implemented solution not only met the project’s time constraints but also exceeded expectations in terms of performance and aesthetics. With a 20-year insurance-backed guarantee, our Polyroof 185 system provided the client with peace of mind, assuring long-lasting protection for the roof. Furthermore, not only did our solution prove to be an attractive alternative to metal sheets, but it also offered significant cost savings. The successful collaboration between Polyroof, Charlesworth Contractors, and the client resulted in a waterproofing solution that seamlessly blended into the natural surroundings of the woodlands. Our advanced liquid roofing system, coupled with expert craftsmanship, delivered an outcome that was both visually appealing and economically viable. With the Polyroof 185 System, we demonstrated once again our ability to provide efficient, durable, and cost-effective solutions for even the most challenging roofing projects.

TERRABASE RUSTIC PATHWAYS FOR LEADER’S GARDENS PUTNEY

Addagrip Terraco Ltd

'NO-DIG' RESIN BOUND SURFACING SOLUTION FOR PARK IN PUTNEY, LONDONTerrabase Rustic was selected for a ‘no-dig’ project creating new pathways across existing grassed, macadam and gravel areas in a popular park in Putney, London.Addagrip approved contractor True Grip Ltd was approached by the local authority to provide a quote and proposal to upgrade the existing pathways and create new paths to the Leader’s Gardens, a small public park lying alongside Putney Embankment, opened in 1903.SURFACING REQUIREMENTOne of the issues to be resolved was that the tree roots could not be disturbed so a ‘no-dig’ system had to be applied around the trees and rooted areas. For these ‘no-dig’ areas True Grip specified Addagrip’s innovative Terrabase Rustic system to be laid directly onto the existing grass and directly over the rooted areas, creating a new pathway. This meant that the trees and tree roots were not disturbed and due to the porosity of the Terrabase Rustic system, precipitation would not be reduced, irrigating the existing surface without changing the trees’ climate or environment.Over 250m2 of Terrabase Rustic Oak 6 -10mm aggregate blend was selected to provide attractive, hard wearing, natural aggregate pathways that are low maintenance, seamless and in keeping with the park setting. The porosity of the Terrabase Rustic system allows essential drainage to reach the tree roots and provide all year round access for pedestrians and wheelchair users. The project was a great success and the paths now provide a circular route around the Beverley Brook area.

Henderson Building

Axter Ltd

This building was once home to the Henderson Garage door production facility, with the client in the process of renovating the entire premises to be split into several new warehousing and office units. To be able to secure new tenants, however, there was an urgency to stop a mass amount of water ingress into the building, due to the roof's years of neglect.Systems in useHyranger®Starcoat® RChallengesThe state of the existing waterproofing was poor, meaning it needed to be stripped back to the metal deck below. Given the years of water ingress it was clear some areas of the substrate were deteriorating and would need replacing. There was also an issue with the adjacent metal cladding to the perimeter of the roof space, one of which was coated in an asbestos paint and the potential for asbestos rope within the old rooflights. All of this needed addressing prior to the roofing works commencing.SolutionsAxter were called to initially survey the roof area, highlighting the main areas of concern and interface issues. Following a roof condition survey report, proposals were put forward as to how best to detail waterproof these areas and achieve the brief set out by the client. To the metal cladding, Starcoat R cold applied liquid bitumen PU resin was used to create a waterproofed upstand without the need for the complete removal of the cladding. Upon discussions with the building owner, it was also discovered that the existing rooflights were no longer needed, so these were boarded over and waterproofed in line with the rest of the main field area. The Hyranger system, comprising polyester reinforced SBS polymer modified bitumen membranes, was ideal for the job due to its guarantee strength, stability, performance and cost efficiency. The completed roof gained a 20 year guarantee and extended the life of the building.

Although competitors had suggested the only option was to strip the roof, Bauder found a more cost-effective answer by using our in house Troxler Moisture Gauge to identify any areas of wet roof construction, removing the saturated areas and then overlaying the whole roof area.Bauder Building BoardProject:Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre Location:BirminghamProject Type:RefurbishmentRoof Area:4500m²Specifier:Black Cat ConsultancyApproved Contractor:BBR Roofing LtdProject challengesThe works were to be undertaken in the middle of winter on the existing single ply covering which kept freezing when the operatives were drying the surface. Fixing down of the insulation boards (to the existing waterproof covering) was a noisy operation which also exposed the retail tenant below to risk of water ingress. Work had to be undertaken on a roof where ridges and valleys had to be navigated whilst managing the waterflow. The specification allowed for the removal and replacement of the saturated areas as identified by our moisture mapping survey. This operation had to be planned to ensure that the retail stores were not put at risk in terms of water ingress, but still managed to keep the works progressing to schedule. This was particularly difficult due to the exposed site and the inclement weather encountered. The resultAs a result, Large sections of cable bespoke design had to be developed with Bauder to overcome these challenging site details without the need to decant the retail tenants below. trays and handrails had to be lifted in situ so the roof works could be completed without compromising electrical or mechanical install.By working closely with the centre, a method of work was developed which fulfilled these criteria in terms of waterproofing, health and safety and business protection of the shopping centre. System installedBauderflex bituminous waterproofing system1 BauderFLEX K4EA torch applied SBS elastomeric bitumen capping sheet, featuring spunbond polyester reinforcement to allow the finished product to cope with structural movement without fracture.2 BauderTEC Sprint DUOA self-adhesive elastomeric bitumen underlayer with DUO lap technology. Having been used in the roofing industry for over 50 years, felt has been consistently developed and improved, and still remains one of the most popular systems available.OptiTorch-Premium bituminous felt is a high-performance waterproofing system that can be installed year-round, with excellent flexibility at temperatures as low as -25oC. Jacksons Fencing

Aldi are a supermarket chain with over 700 stores throughout the UK, many of which are located in or around city centres or other areas which have a high population density. One of the issues this creates is noise pollution, which can emanate from the stores throughout the day as a result of deliveries from heavy goods vehicles in the loading bays, where heavy machinery is often used to transport pallets of goods. As a responsible member of their community, two Aldi stores in Kent came to Jacksons looking to reduce the impact of noise coming from their property.
