The Ascent Up and On step unit was specified to create a safe means of access between different roof levels external to the roof of a city centre residential block. The building is has a single ply membrane roof covering and it was the clients desire not to penetrate the roof; hence the step over / stair unit is supported on rubber spreader feet which provide a non-penetrative support solution. The stair unit is designed in accordance with BS EN ISO 14122-1:2001 + A1:2010 and Building Reg Part K:2013 and manufactured following 1090 factory production control procedures.

Soundis was contracted to supply Acoustic Chip Board 28mm Overlay.As part of a major reinvestment programme into the northern seaside town of Blackpool, the owners of the promenade theme park, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, commissioned a luxury 120-room hotel featuring a 90-seat restaurant and state-of-the-art conferencing and event facilities catering for up to 200 delegates.The product chosen for this project was a 28mm Acoustic Chipboard Overlay Product commonly used over concrete subfloors for its cost-effective solution to impact noise with minimal impact on the floor to ceiling heights of the building.

Fern House Extra Care, built on the site of the former Bingley Hospital in West Yorkshire was designed to complement the existing streetscape and provide a wonderful living environment. The 49 extra care apartments, plus 30 residential bedrooms to support people living with dementia feature Senior’s timber and aluminium composite Hybrid range, to give the scheme a domestic and homely feel. The development also benefits from Senior’s thermally efficient SF52 aluminium curtain wall and SPW 600 windows to help reduce heating costs and maintain a pleasant ambient temperature for residents.

A brand new hospital in Middlesex will deliver efficient and much improved care to it’s patients. The hospital includes new wards, an extension on one of its existing wings as well as the relocation of its existing energy centre. With so much investment in the new hospital including state-of-the-art equipment, the roof design needed to be robust, provide security and require minimal maintenance throughout its lifetime.

In this Case Study, SureSet permeable resin bound paving had the pleasure of working with Horatio’s Garden, this is a national charity known for its beautiful accessible gardens! Created for various NHS Spinal Injury Centres that are each built to help support those affected by spinal damage.

Working with the project architects, our technical team helped to develop the door specification for this state of the art 86,000sqm medical research facility. Dortek designed and installed more than 500 bespoke hygienic door and automation solutions throughout the facility. This included non fire rated and fire rated single action and sliding doors and hermetically sealing sliding doors. Our doors were essential for providing protection across hazardous fire areas. Our void free doors are hygienic, easy to clean, non absorbent and do not harbour bacteria. This makes them ideally suited to research laboratories which are sensitive to contamination.

As part of a recent major re-development of London’s 40 year old National Army Museum there were a number of fire safety requirements to be considered. Large areas of glass characterise this modern building, enhancing the high ceilings and spacious exhibition rooms requiring correspondingly large internal fire doors. Moralt’s Laminesse FireSmoke 54mm door cores offered the architect the ability to achieve the requirement of high and wide double doors fire rated to 60 minutes. Officially re-opened in March 2017 by Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Phillip, it has been transformed into five bright thematic galleries.

Darling Associates and McLaren Group approached Planet Partitioning to undertake the internal atrium glazing and fire-rated glass doors for their fit-out of Ampersand, London. Planet was specified to design, manufacture and install all the glass partitioning for an internal atrium, balustrades and fire-rated and non–fire rated lift lobby doors. For the atrium, Planet Partitioning used full-height frameless 15.5mm low-iron toughened laminated glass. This highly curved atrium needed glass rising from the door plate to create a fluid feel, complementing the central spiral staircase. Planet then installed steel framework to support the atrium glazing.

After 15 years service, the previously installed high-build coating system in this 900 m² Hyundai repair workshop was in need of some attention. Not only was the floor area damaged, dirty and drab, the risk of slips and trips across the facility was becoming problematic.After suitable mechanical preparation, repairs and infills, the substrate was coated with vebro EP OT Primer, a two-component epoxy priming product that is tolerant of residual oil contamination in concrete and cementitious floors, improving the adhesion of subsequent polymer floor systems.Chosen in RAL 7038 Agate Grey, Vebro Polymers’ high build coating system, vebrores EP HBC was able to deliver the perfect level of resistance to chemical attack from petrol, engine oils and other substances typically present in car workshop environments.The inclusion of anti-slip aggregates, encapsulated between the two coats of vebro EP Universal that make up the FeRFA Type 3 epoxy high-build floor system delivered additional slip resistance in critical foot-fall areas where rainwater may be present such as in front of the facility’s roller shutter doors, doorways and fire exits.

The distinctive, semi-elliptical shape of the new 90m high glass and steel office building at 70 St Mary Axe in London required proven passive fire protection and acoustic solutions that could fit with the unique curved frame. Leading manufacturer of fire, acoustic and thermal insulation products, Siderise, met the challenge.

The decision by the British Museum to move a substantial part of its collection of historical artefacts from storage in London to a new state-of-the-art facility in Reading has led to a major fire-stopping contract for a specialist sub-contractor; featuring the use of the FIREFLY™ TITAN Lite™ 120:60 from the TBA FIREFLY™ range.The development at Cutbush Lane East, in the Shinfield district, has seen main contractor Graham Construction awarded a £30million contract for the erection and fit out of the new facility and while the original specification for the well proven and widely used FIREFLY product came from project architects, John McAslam + Partners, the installation and on site expertise was provided by St. Albans based Loftus Construction Solutions Ltd. in installing the 60 rolls of TITAN Lite™ in line with the manufacturer’s standard details and project specific guidance.The Project Manager for Graham Construction, Andrew Gardner, commented: “The British Museum is closing down its storage facility in central London and moving it here to the new research and storage building in Reading, which we expect to complete early next summer (2022). It is installed as a three-layer, staggered system to achieve 120 minutes integrity and 60 minutes insulation. The system has been fully tested to BS 476 Parts 20 & 22 and is third party certified by IFCC.

The Bridle Works building is situated on Cathedral Street in Glasgow and is a 19 storey 414 bed high rise student accommodation building.The building is packed full of amazing features & facilities under Novel Student operations. AliDeck were fortunate to collaborate with Barretts of Aspley at the prestigious Fulham Reach development in London. Central to this project were key AliDeck products across the balconies: the AliDeck Lite Board, Low Joist, and Balcony Drainage System. These components underscore our commitment to supporting fire safety and effective drainage across multi-storey, multi-occupancy buildings with balconies, terraces, or walkways.This new-build development, located on the banks of the river Thames in a key conservation area, required safe, compliant, and aesthetically pleasing solutions to meet the standards of Berkeley Group, who specialise in brownfield regeneration and building quality homes.

The hospital needed to ensure good accessibility and create demarcation areas for staff and visitors. We provided various systems including automatic revolving doors and sliding doors, an automatic revolving door with a diameter of 5.4 meters, and various swing door operators for the automation of both wooden single-action doors and fire-resistant doors. We installed swing door operators and sliding door operators which ensure convenient, comfortable and safe access between the departments. In addition to the benefits of comfort and energy-savings, the solution provides safe escape routes and easy access for both able-bodied and disabled people.

Decorative wall linings from the Pendock Linea building linings range are being used at 2 Ruskin Square in Croydon, to conceal mechanical details surrounding a ground floor feature wall & fire curtain, while also providing a consistent finish to lift lobbies on each level of the 10 storey building.Designed by architects, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the building provides 340,000 square feet of office space and incorporates retail units at ground level. The bespoke wall linings are manufactured from 3mm thick aluminium with a RAL 8022 finish and were also installed by Pendock using a concealed panel hanging system.

Neaco’s roof walkway system has been installed at world's largest single standing seam roofing project at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The $100 million development includes the airport’s new terminal building, railway station, air traffic control centre and the main fire and rescue facility, requiring a combination of straight, tapered and curved roofs with high acoustic and thermal performance specifications. The development involved the construction of 350,000 square metres of Kalzip standing seam roofing - the largest single Kalzip project ever undertaken – which includes Neaco’s aluminium open grille walkways and associated handrails.

Sherwin-Williams FasTop polyurethane floor screed range is used mainly in the food industry but because its so tough as a long term solution it used throughout industry where heavy duty use demands the most durable flooring solution.Not only do floors in rail maintenance areas and train stations need to withstand heavy footfall traffic, they also need to be non-slip in all weathers, and conform to strict fire regulation and legislation. Our anti-slip, seamless systems are chemical and impact resistant, as well as being cleanable. For this large area in Moscow FasTop TG69 met all the requirements.

Vetrotech supplied their very own Pyroswiss fire-resistant glass, which resists fire for up to 30 minutes, thus building a physical barrier against flames, hot smoke and toxic gases. The glasses were supplied in various colors, which bring a warm and creative touch to the facility while marking the different departments within the hospital.

As part of a three-year programme by Birmingham City Council to install fire sprinklers in 10,000 flats across 213 tower blocks, Pendock MXF sprinkler boxing is being used to conceal surface mounted pipework.Manufactured from pre-formed plywood and incorporating a white finish, MXF fire sprinkler boxing was specified, rather than on-site fabrication to provide a consistent and uniform finish while minimising the visual impact of the new fire safety measures in each tenant’s home.Also, it doesn’t require painting and typically takes less time to fit than site made alternatives, which helps reduce labour costs and minimises tenant disruption.

The Una is a timber leaf riser door system with a concealed metal frame. Provided as a full metal door set, made to size and delivered to site as a flat-packed kit prepared for all ironmongery. The wood door leaf comes with hinge cut-outs and can be primed for on-site finishing or pre-finished in our factory. Choose from non-fire rated or fire rated to E30 or E60.

Built by Wates Group for developer MARK and designed by London-based architect SPPARC, Borough Yards’ features a number of transformed and re-purposed railway arches, viaducts and warehouses along with five new buildings, that weave their way from Borough Market to Clink Street. This new shopping and dining district also includes a cinema, art gallery and two new office buildings.IG Masonry Support worked with brickwork contractor Lesterose, designing and supplying a number of complex prefabricated brickwork elements including Welded Masonry Support (WMS), Brick Slip Masonry Support and its renowned B.O.S.S.+ (Brick on Soffit System).ChallengeIn this landmark conservation area, the brickwork for the new buildings needed to compliment the existing brickwork on the repurposed viaducts and warehouses but also present their own unique character.To meet these challenging design requirements, IG Masonry Support manufactured and supplied a range of prefabricated components that met both the wider considerations around planning in this conservation area and at the same time all fire and building regulations.As part of the complex design for building 4, the architect and design team required a bespoke ‘floating’ brick feature presenting a jagged design. The utilisation of IG Masonry Support’s brick slips helped achieve the distinctive angled soffit design, offering a flawless and historic aesthetic in a modern, easy-to-install solution.The distinctive spearheads featuring on building 2 were a separate hurdle but thanks to IG Masonry Support’s close collaboration with the contractors and the architect, it enabled an accurate and sufficient design. Installed over 4 level points of the building, these innovative spearheads, never seen before, were manufactured with glass reinforced concrete, and hand-laid brickwork in-between.Customisable to the architect’s design wishes, the Brick Slip Systems and Masonry Support are prefabricated units manufactured offsite and delivered complete with bricks mechanically-fixed and bonded to them.Due to the type of being brick being used on buildings 2, 3 and 4 being a weaker composition, this necessitated pre-pointing the brick slips in dry, controlled conditions in order to create a high quality, finished surface.SolutionThe bespoke elements for building 4 pushed the boundaries of IG Masonry Support and its products but through technical collaboration the jagged design features were achieved with angled soffits, ensuring a solution that met the architect’s specific requirements.IG Masonry Support exceeded expectations with its Welded Masonry Support system and versatile B.O.S.S.+ (Brick on Soffit System), creating a seamless match with the surrounding brickwork.Able to accommodate loads of up to and exceeding 14kN/m, IG’s Welded Masonry Support (WMS) is a rigid masonry support system comprising a stainless-steel angle support shelf with fixed brackets. It is fabricated to engineers’ specifications on a project basis and offers two planes of adjustability onsite. Offering ease-of-installation, the system can be supplied in a variety of configurations depending on the project’s requirements. At Borough Yards, the WMS was designed, manufactured and supplied by the IG Masonry Support team and installed across building 2 and 4 in order to support the application of the B.O.S.S. system.The B.O.S.S.+ is a lightweight prefabricated system that is faster to install than traditional hanging brick systems. Installed to a pre-fitted Masonry Support System, B.O.S.S.+ allows increased adjustability along three axes. Produced offsite, B.O.S.S. offers 90% time saving onsite and negates the need for mechanical lifting. B.O.S.S.+ also removes the need for brick-cutting onsite, resulting in a quality system that is checked before it arrives onsite. This BBA-certified unit is an ‘A’ Fire Rated, BBA certified and mechanically-fixed unit, suitable for use on residential buildings over 18m above ground level and complies with the Building Regulations 2010* Approved Document B: Fire Safety.Not only is the system versatile, it offers ease-of-installation and enables time-savings onsite. The bespoke solution offers a 70% weight-saving against an equivalent concrete product, negating the need for mechanical handling and onsite labour. These were significant benefits on this mixed-used development in particular.An integral part of the street scene and conservation area, these stunning new buildings sit side-by-side with the historic viaducts and warehouses. To comply with passive fire protection requirements, Nullifire worked with trusted contactor Protek Interiors to install both SC602 Intumescent Base Coat (On-Site) and SC802 Water Based Intumescent Base Coat (On-Site) to this 2500m2 project. The combination of these projects worked well given the challenging circumstances and allowed for Protek Interiors to fully adhere to the fire strategy of the building.

HAG was entrusted with supplying a suite of fire protection solutions, including fire curtains and shutters, to HSBC UK’s flagship office, One Centenary Square, located in Birmingham.This cutting-edge conversion of a ten-storey building symbolised a substantial £200 million investment in the West Midlands. Working within this expansive 1.5 million square foot site posed significant challenges, especially given the heights involved. However, HAG met these challenges head-on, prioritising safety throughout the project. By integrating HAG's advanced fire safety measures, HSBC UK's new headquarters not only stands as one of Birmingham's greenest buildings but also aligns seamlessly with the company's esteemed brand standards.

The Changing Places toilet campaign urges the government to mandate the inclusion of Changing Places facilities in large public buildings during construction, redevelopment, or refurbishment. Care Spaces were approached to collaborate with Birmingham Children’s Hospital to implement a Changing Places facility. Initially, the chosen space was too small, prompting relocation. The Care Spaces team were able to design a layout, which they approved, and the project addressed challenges such as hands-free tap integration, drainage adjustments, and ceiling height modifications. Overcoming fire and water system issues, the completed Changing Place boasts user-friendly features, including sky ceiling LED panels and a mural wall.

Using products like FB750 (Intubatt) and FS702 (Intumastic) – the striking new development allowed for GRJ Contracting to use the complete passive fire protection offering from Nullifire. A representative at GRJ Contracting commented, “All products and services provide by Nullifire during this project were brilliant and allowed us to provide the highest standard of fire protection required by the main contractor.”

The quality of refurbishment in one of the most luxurious parts of London was paramount to conform to the archetypal standards of the surrounding area.Proudly commandeering the best position in Grosvenor Square, the apartments remarkable views from every aspect, including West-facing views of Grosvenor Square Gardens, it really was an honor to be involved with this refurbishment. Soundis were contracted to supply a bespoke acoustic flooring system to many levels and areas within the project.Priced at tens of millions of pounds, these luxury apartments required an acoustic solution of the highest specification. The Robust Detail compliant Soundis Cradle and Batten system combined with a high density, dimensionally stable and A1 fire rated flooring system proved to be highly effective in the reduction of both impact and airborne noise, but also fitted in perfectly at these prestige apartments from a design brief point of view.In a densely populated location both commercially and residentially, limited space was available for both storage and work. Our interface with the Underfloor Heating Company proved to be problem free with both trades building a professional working relationship as the programme developed.Installation was carried out by our installation partner UK Acoustic Systems.

Using materials, shades and textures that work in harmony with rural surroundings is always an important consideration for designers and planners. In Hertfordshire an ancient barn has recently been converted to provide additional accommodation for the nearby house.The new roof of the C16th barn was constructed with Cadisch Welltec perforated profiled aluminium panels over a waterproof membrane. Visible roof lights on such an ancient barn were not permitted but some light is able to penetrate through unobtrusive roof lights which are entirely covered by the perforated Welltec. The outline of the windows can just be made out in the photograph.The corrugated effect of the Welltec already lent a rustic charm to the roof and the owners needed a coating for the aluminium that would both protect the roof and also give the appearance of an old building.Taking inspiration from natural elements, EvolutionTM powder coatings allow architects and designers to achieve the look they need, together with using the most appropriate materials for the job and satisfying planning requirements on a local level.  The panels and ridge cappings totalling over 200 square metres, were pre-treated in a chrome-free system and powder coated in EvolutionTM ‘Peat fire’ at Powdertech’s Corby plant, before being delivered to site for installation. Peat fire is an earthy shade, instantly giving an aged look to the roof. Scarborough Spa, a Grade II listed building and venue for conferences, exhibitions and events required a new waterproofing membrane as the existing felt roof had reached the end of its serviceable life. Following a site survey, Proteus Waterproofing specified Proteus Pro- Felt® Ultima Plus, along with a Cut to Fall insulation scheme, providing a long lasting, bespoke, waterproofing solution.High Performance WaterproofingA built-up roof system was installed with Cut to Fall insulation and Proteus Pro-Felt® Ultima Plus felt. As the roof was had many changes in levels, Cut to Fall insulation was essential. It was designed so water could be directed to suitable outlets, significantly reducing water retention on the roof. A new education facility for Birmingham City University – STEAMhouse 2 - marries the restored frontage of a former Victorian industrial building with a brand new addition designed to promote interdisciplinary courses that bring together artists, scientists and engineers with input from industry.  The locally-listed red brick and terracotta façade of the 1899 Belmont cycle works was preserved after a disastrous fire gutted the building in 2007. That now fronts a new brick building the rear elevation of which boasts Corporate W20 windows in black plus two fire-rated Crittall windows and two fire-rated Crittall doors installed in a fire escape. Beyond this is a new four and five-storey building comprising workshops and teaching spaces. The new and reconstructed buildings are linked by an open central space, beneath a transparent roof, to encourage interaction between students and trainees attending the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) – based university courses on offer.  The Crittall profiles are sensitive to the industrial heritage of the original building while complementing the 21st century ethos underpinning the STEAMhouse’s ambitions.
