The refurbishment was created with a light touch but transformed the main building entrance and reception, upper-floor common areas, WCs and half of the office floors. Work was undertaken whilst the other office floors remained in occupation. The reception refurbishment reused many of the existing high-quality materials, which complements terrazzo, but also helped to transform the space into a contemporary interior whilst retaining the grandeur and sense of arrival.Terrazzo is also in harmony with the edgier interventions such as the distressed metal ceiling raft and lighting which have contributed to the building appealing to the next generation of banking tenants with start-up bank Monzo taking the vast majority of vacant space in the building. The gentle approach to refurbishment and the reuse of materials as well as the use of terrazzo contributed to meeting British Land’s exacting sustainability targets.

RCM - Roofing and Cladding Materials Ltd

The campus in Colchester, which is home to 15,000 students, is undergoing a massive phased transformation. Benx-RCM are currently supplying into phase three of the campus-build, known as The Pastures.Split across five new buildings, The Pastures will bring an additional 1,262 student bedrooms to the Colchester campus. One of these blocks will create a new hub which will include a reception, a post room, an administrative area and a student services centre, along with a laundrette and staff welfare facilities.Overseeing this £168 million project as main contactor is Bouygues Construction.Stanta were awarded the SFS infill package at the site. As part of this package, Benx RCM were selected to supply Y-Wall external sheathing board for the entire project.Y-Wall is a flexible calcium silicate based fibre cement building board, offering excellent fire properties as well as high levels of dimensional stability. The Y-Wall BBA Certification provided the Stanta project team with assurance that this building board solution has been tested to exacting standards, evaluated onsite, as well as undergoing a life expectancy assessment and a quality management system review.Y-Wall was utilised to create a sheathing for the five high rise structures. In buildings with storeys more than 18m above ground level, any products used in the external wall construction should be of limited combustibility. Being a non-combustible, A1 fire-rated building board, utilising BS EN ISO 1182 and BS EN ISO 1716 tests, Y-Wall is the optimum solution for a project of this type and size.In specifying the building board for this project it was important to ensure the optimum racking performance to enhance structural strength. Y-Wall conforms to European Norm - BS EN 594:2011 - the certification which proves the system has been rigorously tested and offers excellent racking performance, structural strength and stability.Specifying a building board that is fully tested to BS EN 1062-1 allows for adequate moisture resistance and durability. Y-Wall fully complies with this standard which ensures the building boards will have a life equal to that of the building. Selecting a building board with good external performance and durability is important, particularly through the build phase, as the product may be left exposed for several months prior to a secondary facade being installed over the top of the system. In order to generate speed and ease of construction, Y-Wall was supplied pre-cut to specified panel sizes. The fabrication work was undertaken by Benx Façades at its dedicated facility, to ensure a seamless process.

The team also wanted the unit to have a non-clinical feel.SolutionAltro Whiterock White, Altro Whiterock Chameleon, and Altro Whiterock Digiclad (Custom) were selected for the walls in the ICU. The hospital’s paediatric unit had Altro hygienic wall sheets installed previously and knew they were robust and trusted products. Ashmead Combined School in Aylesbury can now set up their lunchtime furniture in 8 minutes – that’s seating for 240 students! The six double Wall Pockets which seat approximately 240 pupils takes around eight minutes to set up; a massive time saving on their previous furniture. This time-saving in turn allows the hall to be used as a sports facility for longer each day.The fold-away system ultimately pays for itself as the need for fewer staff to set-up is saving the school money on a daily basis. Proving that the Wall Pocket system can be used for so much more than just lunchtimes, this school also use theirs for lectures and other hall events, as the tables and benches can independently be laid out and are perfect for school assemblies.Versa’s Wall Pocket system is ideal for multi-function halls or school spaces where there is a lack of room to store dining furniture. The simply-installed folding tables and benches are stored within a neat ‘pocket’ which is installed against, or into, the school hall’s wall. The pressure on schools to get the most out of their hall means that anything that increases capacity saves on the staff-time cost of setting out traditional furniture, or releases existing storage areas for other uses, is always welcome. The Wall Pocket system does exactly that.

CHARRED CLADDING ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY

CHARRED CLADDING ON RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY

NORclad Limited

A residential home in Enfield, London, was extended out the back of the property and charred Accoya wood was the chosen material for the cladding. Innovative architects, Studio Hatcham, specified charred Accoya wood to make the extension distinguishable yet sensitive, enhancing the existing grey brickwork, rather than overshadowing it. The Accoya was treated using a charring technique, taking the wood from its originally light colour to a darker, burnt effect. The cladding was charred in three varying shades, creating depth to the extension; light brush “Shizen”, Graphite “Seizo” and Anthracite “Gen no”. For the posts, a deep black effect was chosen to define and accentuate, in particular, the large glass opening of the extension into the back garden. Despite charring the wood, Accoya remains durable and stable with a 50-year warranty against rot. This alongside its great sustainability credentials, made it the perfect choice for this extension.
