The recently renovated 'schloss Colditz' in Saxony, Germany is a great example of how to reconcile the often conflicting demands of historic preservation and fire-protection. The renovation has not just fulfilled fire-protection requirements but the planners have used extremely discreet solutions that fit with historic preservation requirements. Many of the passageways have been fitted with Teckentrup T30 all-glass doors, which combine functionality with aesthetics and maximum transparency.

Construction of Wolverhampton’s eye-catching modern office development i9 has been completed and marks a major milestone in the creation of a thriving commercial quarter at the heart of the city’s award-winning Interchange. The i9 project follows the success of the i10 complex on the opposite side of Railway Drive in the city centre. Both have been delivered by the council and leading property developer, Ion.Designed by Glenn Howells Architects and constructed by GRAHAM Group, the eye-catching i9 building pays homage to the industrial characteristics of the city’s red-brick Victorian architecture. Approved fabricator APiC UK Limited installed Metal Technology Ltd’s System 17 Capped 50mm and System 17 SP structurally glazed Curtain Walling. Opening vents are System 4-35Hi+ Casement, with System 5-20D Hi+ THERMAL Doors and 10-35 commercial framing system.i9 is already home to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government – the first ministerial office with a regular presence outside London.The new office achieves a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating and incorporates the latest green technology and thinking to deliver low energy use, low resource use, flexibility and low impact on the surrounding environment. It is the first office in the Black Country to be awarded WiredScore Gold certification in recognition of its digital connectivity and infrastructure.

In 2020, Hewlett Packard Enterprises relocated to The 210 Building, an inspiring office development in the heart of Winnersh Triangle. Working with architects, Perkins and Will, and BW Construction, Style was specified to create an extensive range of flexible space within the meeting rooms as well as a chic, collaborative working environment.Using a combination of 52dB Dorma Hüppe semi-automatic Variflex glass moveable walls, 55dB solid semi-automatic Variflex moveable walls and Style’s ingenious ‘working wall’ pivot panels, a supremely flexible and stylish training and meeting suite has been created. Hewlett Packard employees enjoy a contemporary environment with the freedom to rapidly change room configuration as often as required. The 210 Building offers 62,000 sq ft of newly refurbished office space, of which 31,000 sq ft has been let to Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Aiming to enhance the work/life balance of employees and staff located in the Winnersh Triangle, the Park offers a plethora of amenities including fitness facilities, cafes, open spaces for walking and cycling, an on-site nursery and even its own dedicated railway station. “This is a stunning installation,” said Julian Sargent, Style’s group managing director. “Everything about it is first class, making this a project we’re incredibly proud of.“The Variflex moveable walls offer top-end acoustic integrity, which means meetings and training sessions can take place undisturbed. This focus on adaptable space, combined with Style’s expertise in delivering partitioning walls with impeccable acoustic performance, gives the hotel multiple options for opening out or dividing the available areas and maximising room hire revenue.Bringing an exciting new buzz to the south-west corner of Leicester Square, The Londoner boasts one of the world’s deepest habitable basements with six subterranean levels housing two cinemas, an expansive ballroom, as well as a swimming pool and spa facility. A raised patio must have it’s edges protected, but not everybody likes the look of wood or metal railing options. Glass provides a sleek and modern aspect to the garden. The SPIG-LITEadvanced raises the glass above the ground, allowing water to flow beneath, making it the ideal balustrade solution for poolside or wet areas. The product is lightweight and compact, enabling easy and quick installation. As with all Pure Vista products, the glass angle can be adjusted to ensure the glass is perfectly aligned. The best windbreak solution, when you have a view, is glass balustrade. As can be seen from the photos, the glass provides protection from the wind and allows a clear line of sight onto the lawn. The next big thing on the horizon is the creation of a standard that will allow architects and engineers to design and use glass as a ductile failure mechanism; the idea being that you can design a structure to be reliable even if the glass breaks - that’s one of the things that has made this project
work. Using SentryGlas® we were able to exploit large glass panels with simple and slender mounts, because the glass just works, even when it’s broken. Without that assurance, the glass would have needed more support, which would ultimately impacted the viewing experience

A mix of Helmsman System 2000 lockers and Glass Lockers situated together totally compliment each other with walnut formica and luscious lime coloured glass doors. These were supplied along with matching vanity shelving and GRP bench seating. The colouring of the Glass shower cubicles and glass toilet cubicles was carefully chosen in a clear interlayer and clear panel glass to bring the overall look of the changing rooms together. This project oozes luxury and quality on all fronts.

This innovative solution has met the most demanding requirements for a fire-rated glass floor and skylight to date; 2-hour fire rating, blast, and seismic resistance, plus live loading for foot traffic. It involves horizontal fire-rated glass, structural glass, and spacers with air-gaps to avoid replacing glass due to dirt and condensation issues that would develop with foot traffic and the outdoor environment.

We installed our Marathon Glass Wet Lockers, Cabrillant 600 Toughened Glass Cubicles and Marathon 600 Laminate Cubicles at Cannon Street. The Lockers are finished in Opti-White 10mm Toughened Glass with Mirror end panels and Hasp and Clasp locks. A bespoke interior, with captive coat hangers and aluminium shoe shelves was created.
The markets most popular glass Cubicle system, Prospec Cabrillant, is a favourite of Gymbox, and the Black Glass gives an astounding finish reflecting the colour scheme of each changing room. In stark contrast, the WCs were finished in a Matt Solid Grade Laminate.

The challengeA leading UK water company refurbished its headquarters in Warrington, which included a full office fit-out and building a staff gymnasium. The solutionThe project utilised glass in the new gym as the light transmission was a priority. Arkoni, a fabricator based in West Yorkshire worked with Pyroguard to deliver a clean cut glass screen without the unsightly black edges often found on other fire glass screens. The glass chosen for the gym was the EI30 INT fire glass in a butt joint format, offering clean almost invisible joints similar to standard non-fire-rated screens.

The Emerald rises 40 stories above one of Seattle's most desirable neighbourhoods. The LEED Silver certified building manages to redefine luxury living. According to the idea of Hewitt architecture studio from Seattle, high-quality, natural materials as well as the sophisticated daylight concept blur the boundaries between the interior rooms and the picturesque nature. This is particularly evident on the second and third floors where the Pilkington Profilit™ channel glass system spans the outside of the fitness centre and community meeting spaces. Large, glazed areas can diffuse extensive amounts of natural light deep into interior spaces without loss of privacy.Apart from channel glass, Pilkington Pyrostop® Line fire protection glass also ensures natural light deep into the interior. Both products were installed in systems from Technical Glass Products.A transparent façade with Pilkington fire-resistant glass was planned to separate the fitness studio from the corridor in terms of fire protection. The spacious inner façade made of glass provides plenty of light in the training area and enables the desired feel-good atmosphere in the fitness studio. At the same time, it directs a lot of light into the interior of the building.The fire-resistant glass Pilkington Pyrostop® Line was used in a Fireframe Clearview® system from TGP with Heat Barrier frames and doors from the Fireframe Heat Barrier series. This generously fire-resistant and at the same time impact-resistant solution could be implemented without a vertical frame between the individual panes, with almost colourless transitions between the adjacent glass panes and without coloured inner glass spacers.

Canal were approached to manufacture a bespoke, straight staircase for a residential property in Kent. The architect wanted to allow as much light in as possible to permeate throughout the property which meant incorporating extensive amounts of glass into the design. The specification required a contemporary steel staircase structure with glass balustrades and treads. The structure and handrails were manufactured in stainless steel and a satin polish finish was applied to provide a brushed appearance. Pig nose fixings were applied to the glass and stringer, which married up the initial welded fixings to hold the glass panels in place.

County Sligo has been blessed with a brand-new luxury hotel, the internationally renowned Radisson SAS Hotel, where the comfort of guests and staff is of paramount importance. Every precaution has also been taken to ensure the safety of residents including the installation of high quality, clear view fire-resistant glass products, Pilkington Pyrostop® and Pilkington Pyrodur®, which have been fitted extensively throughout the entire hotel.Pilkington Pyrodur® is a laminated glass with a special interlayer, developed for the optimum combination of minimum thickness, integrity fire resistance and impact performance. In a fire, the glass forms an opaque barrier to exclude flames and hot gases as well as blocking the sight of the fire, hence reducing panic. In addition to its integrity performance Pilkington Pyrodur® reduces the transfer of radiant heat significantly.Jackie Corcorran of main contractor, J J Rhatigan & Co. Galway was closely involved in the specification of the specialised glass alongside White Bros. Joinery Sligo & Jim Walsh of Greaney Glass Galway. 160 m2 of 10 mm Pilkington Pyrodur® with a 30-minute integrity rating was installed within the corridors of the building. In other areas where there is a slightly greater risk of fire, such as the kitchen area, internal doors and function room screens, were fitted with 21 mm Pilkington Pyrostop®, which provides 60 minutes fire integrity and insulation.Specialist glass & glazing contractors, Greaney Glass, were responsible for installing the fire-resistant glass and Ivan Greaney, Managing Director, comments: “For such a prestigious project it was imperative we used a fire-resistant glass we could trust. There could be hundreds of people within the hotel at any one time so we needed to use materials that would provide maximum protection under the most extreme circumstances. As Pilkington Pyrostop® and Pilkington Pyrodur® are backed by a full suite of impact and fire performance tests, we had no doubts that this was the ideal glass for this project.”Pilkington Pyrostop® and Pilkington Pyrodur® provide excellent levels of protection and have been tested and assessed to BS and EN standards. Not only do they offer excellent fire-resistance they also fully comply with impact safety tests and permit safe breakage in the manner of a laminated glass. In addition, they provide acoustic improvement over standard fire-resistant glass, an important consideration in the hotel that offers a peaceful and relaxing retreat for guests.

Flat Glass rooflights immerse Belfast Lough residence in natural lightFlat Glass rooflights were supplied as part of a new build private residence located on the shores of Belfast Lough. Details of the specification were important due to the exposed location and Flat Glass was selected due to its high thermal efficiency delivered by a thermally broken frame and double glazing.4 fixed Flat Glass rooflights were manufactured to meet a variety of size requirements which overlook corridors, a stairwell and a dressing room and the aesthetic appeal of the elegant aluminium frame was enhanced by Marine powder coating to harmonize with the surrounding environment.

Darling Associates and McLaren Group approached Planet Partitioning to undertake the internal atrium glazing and fire-rated glass doors for their fit-out of Ampersand, London. Planet was specified to design, manufacture and install all the glass partitioning for an internal atrium, balustrades and fire-rated and non–fire rated lift lobby doors.
For the atrium, Planet Partitioning used full-height frameless 15.5mm low-iron toughened laminated glass. This highly curved atrium needed glass rising from the door plate to create a fluid feel, complementing the central spiral staircase. Planet then installed steel framework to support the atrium glazing.

Planet used p100 demountable double-glazed screens for all the classroom frontages and set black laminated timber classroom doors, and for the offices, 30-minuet fire-rated glass doors into our white aluminium slimline door frames.
P20 single-glazed demountable partitioning features in the library and sixth form, which includes a gap between each panel of glass, an aesthetic feature to complement the internal atrium glazing.
Eclipse sliding doors were used throughout.

Glass Balustrade in Cornwall: The Stargazy Inn is a luxury restaurant with rooms in Port Isaac, Cornwall.Like many Cornish restaurants, the Stargazy Inn enjoys spectacular sea views and benefits from a terrace where guests and diners can make the most of the stunning location. The down side to having a sea view terrace in Cornwall, is that the wind can make al fresco dining uncomfortable. Cornwall is renowned for its prevailing westerly winds, even in the summer! The Stargazy Inn wanted to create a windbreak for their terrace so the space could be opened up for diners, but they didn’t want the fantastic view to be compromised. They came to Pure Vista for their frameless glass balustrade installation in Cornwall.The best windbreak solution when you have a view is glass balustrade. 78 St James Street, a very special office refurbishment in the heart of London’s Mayfair, has involved a slew of skilled and experienced contractors to make the Grade II* Victorian building a commercial space fit for 21st century working while retaining the building’s magnificent fabric. Halifax Glass has used Hodgson Sealants’ U9 silicone for sealing the building’s impressive timber window units. The windows, which are the full height of the storeys on the front façade, required a specialist glazing company to meet the demands of the project. Halifax Glass has many years’ experience in creating architectural glazing solutions and was called in to produce and install the windows at St James Street using Hodgson Silfix U9 Silicone Sealant for the job. Halifax Glass also used quantities of Hodgson’s Flexistrip, the market-leading load-bearing security glazing strip for installing double glazed units, laminated glass and single glass into windows and doors.

Lindner SE | Partitions and Lindner SE | Interior Fit-Out and Furnishings were largely responsible for the detailed interior design with lots of glass, silver fir, brass, exposed concrete and a colour concept with 32 colours. Lindner developed a new glass partition wall in which the glass walls could be installed frameless thanks to grooves in the floor and ceiling. In order to fulfil all fire protection requirements in the various rooms, the doors and glass wall systems were designed in F0, F30 and F90 as required. Another special architectural detail: the wooden door leaves were integrated seamlessly into the glass walls without an additional frame. Silver fir or brass was chosen as the surface finish.These materials can also be found in the wall panelling and built-in furniture, which were manufactured by Lindner Objektdesign in its own factory. Other special solutions included an elliptical counter made of brass, curved lawns made of artificial turf, designer furniture in the group/ work areas as well as ultra-modern teaching kitchens and special teaching desks in the classrooms. Transforming a balcony into functional space, glass panels are used to enclose the area, creating a barrier against weather and noise without impeding the view. On fine days, the upper section of the glass panels can be neatly folded and stacked to one side, allowing people to sit out and enjoy the sunshine.For terrace rooms that open straight out into a garden or external seating area, Style’s new glass sliding wall allows the boundary between the two spaces to be easily removed on sunny days, whilst successfully combining weather protection with uninterrupted views of the outside during inclement weather.With a discrete guidance track that can be fitted flush to the floor, the BSW system creates a truly a streamlined aesthetic. “This is an exciting addition to our portfolio of glass moveable, folding and partitioning walls,” said Mark Cowley, who heads up the glass solutions division at Style. StoVentec Glass rainscreen cladding has been installed to the entrance of 76 Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, a new mixed-use development in Dublin. The RAL 2008 orange coloured glass panels, manufactured bespoke to project requirements, were installed by Duggan Systems using Sto’s sophisticated sub-construction. This invisible yet indispensable supporting structure forms the structural link between the façade and the substrate and enables the individual StoVentec Glass panels to be installed and secured easily to provide a distinctive entrance to this building. BBA accredited, StoVentec Glass panels are suitable for internal and external use, for new build or refurbishment projects and can be installed within high-traffic areas as the system has passed all industry standard soft-body and hard-body impact tests to CWCT standards. This new development was designed by Dublin based RKD Architects, and the completed facility has achieved LEED v4 GOLD, with more than 20 products with third-party verified Environmental Products Declarations (EPDs) installed, which included our StoVentec Glass panels.
