Gaggenau: The perfect appliance partner for the major re-development of The Old War Office building

Gaggenau

Gaggenau, the luxury brand for professional-grade home appliances, was the perfect appliance partner for the major re-development of The Old War Office (The OWO) building. Located in London’s Whitehall, directly opposite Horse Guards, this 760,000 sq ft Grade II listed masterpiece has been transformed into a Raffles hotel, private residences, destination restaurants, a spa and boutique shops. Gaggenau is renowned for its considered approach to kitchen design and nowhere is this more important than in a historic listed building, where custom-fit solutions are a must. Indeed, each of the 85 apartments – which range from studios to five bedroom – had a unique size, shape or aspect, so had to be individually designed. As such, the interior designers 1508 London engaged bespoke kitchen company Smallbone, which – in turn – specified long-term partner Gaggenau.  The kitchens are beautifully understated with doors in a grey-stained timber with delicate brass framing and accents, plus creamy Taj Mahal quartzite worktops. As such, the suite of Gaggenau appliances were the ideal choice, as they work in harmony with the luxurious colour schemes. Built in 1906, the Old War Office is a building that has witnessed world-changing events. Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and Lord Kitchener all worked here, not to mention T E Lawrence and Ian Fleming. Now, a new chapter is being written as the 125-room Raffles hotel and 85 fully-serviced Raffles branded residences combine old-world grandeur with modern luxury.

Anderson, GEC Ltd

Stainless steel work tops and sinks from GEC Andersons Made-to-Measure (M2M) range have been installed in the kitchen of a newly renovated Grade II listed Georgian terrace to provide a striking and contemporary contrast to the historical setting of the property. The five storey dwelling is situated in the beautiful and unspoilt Myddleton Square in the Angel district of London. Built between 1824 and 1827, the square is named after Sir Hugh Myddelton, who was the engineer responsible for bringing a fresh water supply into the city. The sympathetic renovation work was carried out to a very high specification, incorporating as many of the original features as possible.Renovation specialists Fullers (Builders) Ltd were asked to undertake the work. Many aspects of the refurbishment project were bespoke including the new kitchen, situated in the basement, designed by Butler Hegarty Architects and created by Fullers in-house joinersGEC Andersons M2M bespoke range is not only highly flexible but also is of very high quality. It was therefore ideal for this part of the project. The brushed satin stainless steel sinktop 4374x615mm was specified, with specially sized sink and drainer area, including (500x400x200mm and 180x400x200mm) sink bowls. To complement the worktops, stainless steel splashbacks were incorporated into the design including socket cut-outs. For ease of installation, the sinktop was mounted on a waterproof substrate, sound deadened and plastic protected.Central to the kitchen is the stainless steel bridge island worktop (1482x623mm) that includes a bin-chute with a flush-fit lid, for easy rubbish disposal. The sides of the island are integral and therefore manufactured and supplied by GEC Anderson in one piece with the worktop. They include cut-outs for sockets. There is a stainless steel panel at the back of the island, against which the range cooker stands. Stainless steel plinth kick plates are included throughout the kitchen.Gary Butler of Butler Hegarty Architects said, We recommended stainless steel to our clients and it suited their aims for the kitchen. Blackheath Halls

Anderson, GEC Ltd

The conclusion of a far-reaching and detailed refurbishment contract within the country’s oldest purpose-built cultural entertainment venue has included the installation of custom designed stainless steel units and worktop, supplied and installed by G.E.C Anderson for the food preparation area.  The project at the historic Blackheath Halls in Lee Road, South-East London, has been carried out by the equally long established Sykes and Son on behalf of the operating company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The scope of the work included the redevelopment of the Great Hall, bar and box office/foyer areas. With such construction work as electrical rewiring, plumbing and plastering completed, G.E.C Anderson’s project management team carried out a precise survey of the food preparation area, located to one at the North end of the main bar, in order for the design and fabrication process to commence. While many clients choose to make use of G.E.C Anderson’s standard ranges of sinks and other sanitaryware, the conservation considerations to the work within Blackheath Halls required a bespoke solution. The sector specialist manufacturer’s workshops duly produced a set of three base cabinets in stainless steel, and a single-piece L-shaped stainless steel work-surface with integral sink and splashbacks. Such custom made installations offer a pristine appearance that is ideal for such public facing applications, while helping establishments maintain an efficient cleaning regime essential in achieving the high standards of hygiene essential in commercial premises.   Hannah Benton, Operations Manager for Blackheath Halls whose responsibilities include the servery area, commented: “The refurbishment of the different areas of the venue – including the general building work, updating of plumbing and electrical services and installation of the new servery facilities, was completed to schedule for the reopening in November. All of the equipment matches the scope of the works effectively as well as hygiene requirements.”Since its formation in 1962, G.E.C Anderson has built its reputation for the supply of top end stainless steel sinks and sanitaryware on a combination of innovative design, top quality materials and expert craftsmanship. In addition to the company’s Decimetric system of cabinets, sinks, drainers and other equipment - widely specified for sectors including health and catering – it is able to create custom engineered solutions to exactly fit any space or specification.

The office “G+P Muller architectes” designed a total of 94 rooms, including classrooms, laboratories, workshops and studios. The Lycée also has its own swimming pool, sports halls and a canteen kitchen with an attached cafeteria. The straight-lined architecture, which uses daylight in a variety of ways and cleverly leads into the building, is captivated by a fresh color concept that takes on an aesthetic and structuring function throughout the building. In order to harmoniously adapt the swimming pool, sanitary areas and canteen kitchen to the color concept, the architects chose two tile series from Villeroy&Boch: PRO ARCHITECTURA and UNIT ONE. In addition to the necessary technical properties for public kitchens and wet areas, the PRO ARCHITECTURA series in particular offers a professional color and format system. For the sanitary area, the architects chose orange, which also appears in the school’s logo, as well as red and white, using several of the system’s modular formats. The swimming pool area is designed around the pool with specially anti-slip tiles from the PRO ARCHITECTURA series. In the surrounding areas, the swimming pool is divided into the colors light and dark gray, which harmonize very well with the concrete elements and the wooden ceiling.

Working with both the customer and contractor we supplied our 'Built to Last' shelving, personal cabinets and cloakroom furniture. All items were crafted to bespoke requirements in our Greater Manchester factory, to accommodate and utilise all available space.Project ScopeSince 1947, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst has been training Officer Cadets to become Commissioned Officers in the British Army.Located in a 600-acre estate by the border of Berkshire and Surrey, it has an international reputation for 'delivering world-class leadership', and to ensure this premium standard of education was upheld, the need arose for the academy to refurbish its military band practice room and storage area. The BOYCO WayBackgroundProviding both project management and in-house design support, BOYCO worked alongside Willmott Dixon Construction and HLM Architects to refine the needs of the military band storage room. There was a demand for high-quality products that could withstand the rigours of military use, from heavy uniforms to instruments. Team BOYCO was able to meet this requirement thanks to our 'Built to Last' standard, which applies to all our fixed furniture solutions.Quality Bespoke ProductsCatering to the students of the Royal Military Academy, we supplied our floor-fixed benching to the male and female changing rooms, and our double-sided island bench to the male changing rooms. Both sets of cloakroom furniture featured MFC slats, providing comfort and functionality. In our recent steps towards sustainability, the MFC slats on the benching has been sourced from sustainable forests. As per the BOYCO standard, all metal work on the items fitted at the Royal Military Academy are coated in our ‘Hot Dip’ Nylon coating. As well as providing market-leading durability due to it being 4 times thicker than powder coated alternatives, it offers antimicrobial protection. Pioneered by BOYCO, it has been formulated to stop 99% of known bacteria from surviving on its surface, contributing to the health and safety practices of the academy. This finish offers a perfect solution to ensure the utmost cleanliness for the high touchpoint areas being used by military personnel and staff daily. To complement the benching, and the Royal Military Academy's need for a high level of storage, bespoke personal cabinets were also installed. Boasting a unique feel and perfectly tailored to the Academy's needs, the cabinets were specially designed and manufactured with internal fixed shelves and a changing rail for hanging military uniforms. Anthracite grey was opted for due to its uniformity and sleek look, providing a professional finish to the changing rooms.Due to the size of the units being 1.5 m wide x 2.1 m tall, BOYCO prioritised safe practices and customer needs when delivering the fixed furniture. The final weight of the fully constructed furniture was just over 140kg, so all items were assembled on-site.For the instrument storeroom, 4-tier floor and wall-fixed shelving with a steel frame was installed. This provides high levels of support and strength which is essential due to the weight and value of the musical instruments being stored. Project SuccessFollowing the completion of the project, Team BOYCO visited Sandhurst Military Academy. Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd gave exceptional feedback, reflecting how happy they were with not only the band practice facility's transformation, but with the end-to-end experience working with BOYCO.We are proud to be a part of this fantastic project for the Military School and have provided our 'Built to Last' products that are guaranteed to withstand the test of time. Looking for support on your upcoming project?Get in touch with one of our friendly team members here.

Flowers Gallery was first established in 1970 on Lisle Street in London’s West End, more recently moving into a 12,000 sq foot industrial space in Shoreditch, East London. Now, Flowers have two gallery spaces in London and one in the United States. Flowers participates regularly in art fairs internationally. The programme in both the UK and US comprises all media by established and emerging artists. The gallery is an active publisher of prints and multiples with an established department in contemporary international photography. When refurbished in 2014, Dan Flowers contacted GEC Anderson to produce a stainless steel worktop that would be incorporated into the gallery kitchen. The gallery kitchen is used on a daily basis by fifteen staff members and also by outside caterers that are hired to cater for exhibitions. The area is well used on a regular basis and needed to be long lasting and hygienic but also to look smart and professional. Architect, Felicity Atekpe, of White Table Interior Designs in relation to the kitchen “I was trying to get a different kind of space from the normal gallery and wanted it all to be hues of blues and moody (restful) with the stainless steel as the sparkle. Dan suggested GEC Anderson. At the time I showed them photographs which were stills from the Japanese film Floating Weeds by Yasujiro Ozu but they chickened out of painting the walls darker and the floor... You never know though, they might yet.”
