The Canada Water Masterplan is a significant urban regeneration project in Canada Water, Southeast London. Led by British Land and AustralianSuper, the Masterplan is set to transform a 53-acre site into a radiant mixed-use neighbourhood, over the coming 10-15 years. The development will see the creation of around 3,000 new net zero homes, circa one million sq. ft of retail, leisure, entertainment, education, and community spaces, and up to 2.5 million sq. ft of workspace. The 120-year-old Grade II-listed building features 19th Century architecture and was once the base for the Surrey Commercial Docks which operated in the Rotherhithe Peninsular for decades. The restoration project was approached sympathetically, with an overarching goal to return it to its former glory, whilst respecting its historical significance. Onyx Apartments is an 11-storey building located on the Regent’s Canal banks, offering 117 bespoke homes. The development was designed as a modern, elegant and professional living environment. Comfort and safety were top priorities in bringing this project to life and Reynaers products were used to realise those aims. CS 86 ‘High Insulated’ aluminium window system offers an energy-efficient option, and CP 155 ‘Lift and Slide’ aluminium door system creates maximum glazed areas while also maintaining comfort. Onyx Apartments is a great example of combining elements of luxury and practicality, bringing a fresh perspective to the area.

The non-profit organization Living Architecture has realised four special holiday homes across England, each one is an extraordinary example of contemporary architecture, designed by leading architects. The most spectacular of the projects is the ‘Balancing Barn’ in Suffolk (Uk), designed by the Dutch bureau MVRDV. In the 30-metre long house, which juts out 15 metres over the edge of a rise, Reynaers CP 155-LS (Lift & Slide) was used for the large sliding windows. The large protruding section meant that it was possible to place another large window in the floor as a complement to the architectonic spectacle.

Moving walkway installation at 5 Rise Shopping Centre in Bingley, which provides the majority of retail for the town. All external finishes on the moving walkway had to be water-resistant resulting in a spectrum of watertight materials from galvanised and satin stainless steel to vulcanised synthetic rubber, aluminium and glass. Stannah also tailored the pallet with an anti-slip coating to maximise passenger safety.

What has been the true impact of 12 months of remote working on UK office staff? A recent YouGov poll by bathroom designer and manufacturer Geberit shows a workforce missing their colleagues and longing for a return to face-to-face meetings. With more than half of us missing the work-life balance that the office offers, its findings also reveal very little resistance from staff when faced with the prospect of a return to the office. Here, Sophie Weston, channel marketing manager at Geberit, reveals more about its insight and the impact of hygiene in the office moving forward – especially the washroom.

For most of their long history, Bathams had to move the huge casks manually, rolling them across the floor and lowering 54 gallons of beer one cask at a time with ropes and chains. This method took a lot of time and posed serious health and safety risks for staff. Recognising the need for an improved system, Bathams approached Penny Hydraulics searching for a way of moving casks in their brewery and some of their pub locations. They wanted a solution that was unique to their operations, but was also easy to use, ultimately protecting staff and reducing delivery time.

League regulations demand the installation of a rigid mesh fence with a spectator handrail around the perimeter of the pitch to a height of 1.1 metres. Zaun completed the complex supply and installation as changing ground levels required adaptation to ensure maintaining the 1.1m height around the whole pitch. Zaun contracts manager Steve Hancock visited the Haven Sportsfield Ground to take all of the site details for manufacture and supervised the installation, which was completed a week ahead of schedule.

An innovative door design was required for a new manufacturing process about to be introduced in the new Nissan battery plant manufacturing facility. Project/doors:100 Bespoke Conveyor screensThe challengeNissan required a unique door for a new production facility. The doors needed to give 60-minute fire resistance and be capable of completing up to 400,000 open/close cycles a year. Further, the doors needed to meet strict air leakage criteria and be able to withstand sudden air-pressure increases. The doors also had to interface with third-party equipment such as conveyor belt controls and fire alarms. Each required an LCD display control panel that provided a quick and easy diagnosis of what each door was doing at any point in time. The solution Using an already proven design solution which Hart developed for the baggage handling system in Heathrow’s Terminal 5, Hart adapted the product to suit this new requirement. As this was not a product already on offer, invention and rigorous testing were required.The successA decade has passed since the doors were installed and commissioned. The facility continues the manufacture of the battery cells and the doors remain a critical part of the success of the plant and have proved exceptional reliability and total cost of ownership

Earlier this year Troax UK Ltd. were approached by Swisslog and their client TJ Morris, who trade throughout the UK as Home Bargains to assist them in the implementation of a large scale automated Warehousing System in a new distribution centre at Amesbury. The materials handling equipment installation, Swisslog’s largest in the UK this year, included pallet and light goods systems (incorporating racking, cranes and conveyors), EMS monorail system, and Swisslog’s innovative CaddyPick semi-automatic case order-picking system, the first of its type in the UK.

The customer wanted to build a deck on the first storey of a period building in Chicago The windows opening out on to the roof were positioned considerably higher than the rooftop itself, which meant that the structure deployed to support the deck would also need to raise it up almost a metre to meet the threshold. We recommended a number of our heavy-duty Megapads ranging from 711mm to 876mm to account for the gradual fall in the roof. The customer chose not to envelope the pedestals because he liked the industrial look created, in keeping with downtown Chicago.

Specialist lighting design company PSL, were looking for something a little different for their trendy new Bermondsey showroom. Designers, James Plumb obliged with a beautifully crafted and truly unique design that involved much concrete and some special stainless steel kitchen units from GEC Anderson.Drawer cabinets, base cabinets and appliance doors were supplied and installed by GEC Anderson, following the development of the detailed designs.

German online retailer improves its distribution centre performanceLödige Industries equips distribution centre with 12 goods lifts in 3 yearsOver a period of three years, Lödige Industries has delivered 12 SHERPA goods lifts to a newly built distribution centre in use of a German online retailer. The customer required a solution which would guarantee high throughput and availability together with compact construction. After installing nine SHERPA goods lifts in 2013, the customer decided to install two more SHERPA in 2015 and one in 2016. How does the customer benefit from relying on SHERPA goods lifts?Save spaceThe customer needed a compact lifting solution. Altogether four different elevator sizes were installed for this customer. The sizes fit the different pallets and picking trolleys, which the customer is using. Additional space was gained by reducing the floor space of some SHERPA freight elevators. Pallets and picking trolleys are moved efficiently and without disturbances between levels.Structural conditions do not complicate the installation of the SHERPA as the motor is located in the head room. Moreover, the control cabinet can be positioned remotly from the lift. Access for maintenance is provided via a maintenance gap above the upper door to the shaft head room. The area around the lifts can thus be used for other purposes.Flexible integration12 SHERPA goods lifts in total had to be optimally positioned. The foundations of the hall supports and the hall ceiling girders had to be taken into account. The Lödige SHERPA comes with a free-standing shaft structure and hence it does not require any rack modifications. By using 80 mm high ramps, it was possible to dispense with shaft pits for the SHERPA freight elevators. As a result, the freight elevators could be optimally positioned without any structural changes, thus achieving a high degree of flexibility for integration into the racking systems.High throughputMore importantly, the customer required a solution that offers a high throughput. Usually, goods lifts have a transportation speed of 0,2m/s. The 12 SHERPA goods lifts at this project offer a maximum transportation speed of 0,4m/s. The main kitchen at the Old Deanery, official residence to the Bishop of London, was part of a major refurbishment of this historic home, lying in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral.Situated on the first floor, the main kitchen is a very compact room and this presented special challenges to its design. The available space was truly maximised under the design of Caroe Architects and it was then the task of GEC Anderson to measure, supply and install the specialist fabrications as well as the many appliances.Sykes & Son Ltd were awarded the main contact for the the total refurbishment project.

The Stove and Fire Vent is the ideal interior vent to compliment a log burner or stove. The Smeg UK headquarters in Abingdon is home to an impressive showroom, which displays more than 500 of the brand’s appliances for both trade and consumer visitors.When Smeg set about refurbishing the showroom, it wasn’t just in need of hardwearing and durable flooring to replace the existing curled loose lay tiles. The space also needed a beautiful design to complement the brand’s many product collections on display; enter Amtico with a contemporary alternative. The redesign saw the main areas of the showroom fitted with Spacia LVT in Sun Bleached Oak and Gallery Concrete.

Deptford Fire Station is a Grade II listed building in Lewisham having been originally constructed in 1903. Bolton Gate supplied the folding appliance bay doors in the 1960’s and although still functional after fifty years, they were in need of replacement due to frequent usage. Since the building is listed, every effort was required to replace the doors on a like for like basis and Bolton Gate were engaged to supply new folding shutters to the same design which were installed and handed over recently. This is the latest in a list of several fire station contracts undertaken in London.

They required a solution to stop dust going out of the building instead of being aspirated by the installed system when emptying grain trucks into the wheat grain intake pit.The solutionHart installed three Speedor Storm doors from 4m wide x 5m high to 7m high. The Speedor Storm is the next generation of large external door which has improved wind resistance on both sides of the door and is suitable for larger openings, greater than 6m. This door does not require separate wind bars as the curtain contains wind bracing every 1m and is held securely into the guide channels with rollers at either side. The success Hart Doors sent an experienced engineer to Mombasa to supervise and assist in the installation and commissioning of the doors along with the training of staff to install future orders. 18 more Speedor Storms were ordered for a specialised dry bulk discharge and handling terminal for grain imports, located in Shimanzi, Mombasa.

Improved handling efficiency, better utilisation of space and enhanced safety have been achieved by Bott Limited following the installation of a Mezz Lift from Penny Hydraulics to lift loads from ground floor to a mezzanine in the stores at its dedicated commercial vehicle conversion workshop facility.

Greenford station has become the 67th step-free Tube station and recently has been proudly showing off its innovative new lift. The new incline lift is a first of its kind as it doesn’t travel straight up and down - it travels alongside the newly refurbished staircase and new escalator!

Clean, smart, professional and safe sanitary appliances are really what is expected in this environment.When it came to upgrading the facilities at Birmingham’s Heartlands Hospital, the decision was taken by the Estates Department to use WCs and urinals from stainless steel specialists, GEC Anderson Limited. However, when service life, maintenance issues and facilities out of service are taken into account, this cost can very soon be outweighed.

People who want to escape the big city find a pleasant home in this modern and preferred residential area outside of Frankfurt. Rents have been rising throughout the Frankfurt area for many years. Also in Königstein rents are well above the average in Germany. Lödige Fördertechnik GmbH supplied a PEGASOS car lift for an apartment house in Koenigstein, Germany. The lift is used as an access to the garage in the basement.Creating attractive living space despite rising rentsMany residents and commuters in this region are dependent on own cars because of public transport connections. Anyone who has visited Königstein is familiar with the parking conditions: hilly, narrow streets lead to a low number of parking spaces. The owner of this project was faced with the question of how living space could be designed attractively despite the rising prices and lack of parking spaces?The Karl Dudler Architects had a vision for the centrally located private building in the heart of Königstein: a modern and comfortable apartment building with straight and clear structures, consisting of 2- and 4-room flats.Installed in November 2014, Lödige Industries was able to successfully implement the architects' vision with the PEGASOS ® car lift. As the shaft head in this project was installed outside the building and thanks to the narrow shaft geometry of the lift, it looks like a single garage from the outside when equipped with roller doors, which underlines the modern design of the building. The PEGASOS car lift also stands out for its ease of installation, as this model does not require a pit and can thus reduce underground engineering costs. Also, a machine room is not required. Residents can easily reach the desired floor with the help of a remote control.  The building, which was completed in November 2014, is a KfW Efficiency House (55). Thanks to reduced drive power and higher efficiency, the PEGASOS is significantly more energy-efficient than hydraulic car lifts and can therefore also be used in KfW-efficient houses, as here in Königstein.We are pleased to have achieved an all-round positive result for the customer. The car lift is maintained by Lödige Industries as part of a service contract.Application of the elegant, space-saving solutionDue to the surroundings and the layout of the building, the owner was looking for a space-saving parking solution. The property did not have a straight side boundary. The PEGASOS® car lift offers the ideal solution for, this situation, because due to its low shaft head height, this model can be used as a boundary construction.The parking space regulations in Königstein set a precise number or parking spaces for residential buildings, which could not be achieved here using the conventional way, an access ramp. Thus, the owner was threatened with a high redemption sum.The owner could reduce civil engineering costs due to the simple installation and the fact that this model does not require a pit.Compared to hydraulic car lifts, the PEGASOS is significantly more energy-efficient thanks to reduced drive power and higher efficiency.Due to the outside installed shaft head and the narrow shaft geometry of the lift, it looks like a single garage from the outside when equipped with elegant roller doors.

Groupe Atlantic’s mission is to help society rise to the challenge of reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy whilst still satisfying the demand for thermal comfort. So when RFD Interior Architecture was asked to design and build the interiors for its new Expert Training Academy in East Yorkshire, where the heating and hot water industry could learn about the next generation of renewable energy sourced appliances, it was key that the academy’s interior should itself have minimal impact.With this in mind, the project focused on mirroring Groupe Atlantic’s commercial approach by using sustainable materials and recycled products wherever possible to provide a practical, low maintenance interior with authentic natural aesthetics.

GEC Anderson were recently chosen to work with Robin Lee Architecture in a highly creative multi-level residential apartment development in London’s Bayswater. The design process was lead by Architect, Robin Lee but was closely followed by his client and included significant collaboration with GEC Anderson who supplied and installed the stainless steel kitchen, including the associated appliances.To some, the kitchen may look to comprise standard or modular units but, in fact, every piece was individually and meticulously designed so as to maximise its functionality and use of space but also to provide it with its own unique and interesting visual features. A series of niches and shelf spaces were included to really maximise the use of space and to imbue the kitchen with creativity.

The Haggerston West & Kingsland development is a residential housing scheme undertaken and operated by the renowned L&Q group. Several blocks of buildings were featured within the project. A community kitchen was included within Block B. Project architects, PRP specified the kitchen to be in stainless steel and GEC Anderson were awarded the task of supplying and installing the required units as well as the various electrical and gas appliances. The fully stainless steel kitchen was laid out in a symmetrical configuration and includes two sink areas, base cabinets, wall cabinets and drawer units. All units were lockable.Other areas of the project were also supplied by GEC Anderson, including the nursery and baby change facilities.
