New Clement W20 steel windows for Grade II* listed Town Hall

The town of Whitchurch in Hampshire is a special place: most of the town is a Conservation Area, the amount of wildlife in and near the River Test means its course and banks are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the town is the Gateway to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the third largest of Britain's 46 AONBs. The current Town Hall was built by a local landowner, Lord Middleton, in or around 1791, using some of the timbers from the Old Town House that had stood in the centre of The Square, and was demolished in the 1780s. During the 1800s the building had many tenants including the Mechanics Institute and a furniture warehouse.Records show that in the 1900s the building was also put to a variety of uses. The local Magistrate held sessions, two rooms were used to shelter Military Units passing through Whitchurch, and in 1919 the building was used by the National Federation of Discharged Soldiers and Sailors. Parish Councils were set up in 1896, but met at the Poor Law Institute (the Gables). More recently, the National Fire Service was accommodated in the lower middle section of the building. In 1946, Midland Bank, (now HSBC) was in the lower right hand corner. The Town Band practiced here, and the British Legion used the upper floor. Recently, an extensive program of refurbishment works has taken place to improve the Grade II* Listed Building. This included new steel doors and windows by Clement for the front elevation. The Clement W20 range was chosen for both, with krypton gas filled units. Ash pull handles perfectly complement the steel doors and Boleyn handles were chosen for the steel windows. Sarah Weir, Clerk at Whitchurch Town Council said ““The Town Council are really pleased with the new windows and door which are modern, practical and in keeping with the historic building”.

The development, to mark the college’s 150th anniversary, enabled the Eastbourne College to take a giant leap forward providing several high-quality facilities in one substantial build. Delta Balustrades worked with the architect from early concept design stages and provided technical expertise and advice. The Orbis balustrade system throughout provided a consistent glass balustrade style throughout the building and could be utilised for the external pavilion areas also. Whilst mainly throughout new build areas of the college, the look and style of the balustrades was especially important to complement the College’s iconic buildings and environment. Due to the proximity to the sea, special attention had to be given to the materials and finishes for the external balustrades, and 316 grade stainless steel with a Lustre bright polished finish was required to be suitable in a marine environment.

Multi-Purpose Hall, Altdorf, Germany

Polytan Sports Surfaces (UK) Ltd.

If a small town with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants decides to build a multi-purpose hall, special care needs be taken over money. The Swabian town of Altdorf has shown that this can be done. The municipality, located in the Esslingen district, chose an unusual way, one that was also unknown territory for the architect. The people of Altdorf opted for an industrial hall that was expanded into a multi-purpose hall. The challenge for the architect Werner Krepela was to equip this functional hall so that it complies with all current safety regulations and, in doing so, fulfils its new function as a sports and multi-purpose hall.At the centre of the 50 x 28 m hall is a football pitch measuring almost 1,000 m². An unfilled LigaGrass Synergy with mineral support grain was laid as turf. The 978 square metre pitch, the largest indoor football pitch ever built by Polytan, is surrounded by a system of boards and a piping netting system at the sides and above the pitch. The boards and nets can be easily removed to enable the hall to also be used for other public purposes.

Structural Waterproofing - Private Residence

Delta Membrane Systems Ltd

The Scope of the project was to provide a structural waterproofing solution to a private dwelling with new build extension. The property, situated on a sloping site gave the opportunity for the waterproof design to utilise the properties environment to allow for natural discharge of any potential water ingress. The property was detached and retaining to the front and side elevations where the retaining ground slopes down and away from the property to a garden that continues to slope down to a small stream. The retaining walls on either elevation rise at their highest point to approximately 1500mm above the internal floor level. The internal walls of the property were original brick to the front and new cavity built concrete block. The floor to what was the original house is of solid concrete construction joining on to a newer block and beam floor construction. When designing the most appropriate waterproofing system to any given situation, various design factors require addressing such as (but not limited to), final use of the building, the grade of waterproofing requirement under the British Standard, structural considerations based on the form of construction and in some cases, satisfying the requirements of building warranty providers.

Britannia Leisure Centre – anti-climb grating crowns facade surrounding rooftop MUGA

Lang+Fulton

Britannia Leisure Centre is a new multi-sport community complex in Hackney. A key driver for the client was that the building should have a compact footprint. This was achieved by stacking the facilities, creating a rooftop MUGA with tennis courts and 5-a-side football pitches.Lang+Fulton supplied the external steel mesh panels which crown the building and provide panoramic views of London. These were made from their Terra-34 grating which features an anti-climb aperture. The tall slender panels were designed to continue the architectural theme of the building’s columns and vertical elements and were finished in a graphite grey ppc to compliment the neutral palette of stone, concrete and glass. In addition a grating screen was supplied to secure the upper levels of the stairway providing natural daylight and through visibility to the entrance atrium and cafe area. The steel grating also conformed to the requirement for material durability and low maintenance which were key specification considerations. The Britannia Leisure Centre has received multiple awards including Overall Building of the Year (New London Architecture).

Lords Cricket Ground Compton and Edrich Stand

Proteus Facades

Proteus Facades has supplied striking aluminium cladding to Lords Cricket Ground’s new Compton and Edrich stands. The existing stands on the ground's Nursery (eastern) End had become inadequate due to the needs of modern spectators, with restricted sightlines in the lower tiers and upper tiers entirely exposed to the elements. A decision was therefore taken to replace them with two new build stands, named after the famous cricketers Dennis Compton and John Edrich.WilkinsonEyre architects were commissioned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for the £53m redevelopment of the new stands, which flanks either side of the Stirling Prize-winning Media Centre. The curved, elliptical form of WilkinsonEyre’s design makes the stands appear like ‘objects landed from outer space’, while providing a range of additional seating and hospitality areas (increasing the previous capacity from 9000 to 11,600 seats), new concourses and circulation areas which overlooking the Nursery Ground, public realm and landscaping allow the spectators to enjoy the facilities and hopefully a good game of Cricket.

Proteus Facades

Perforated cladding panels like no other from Proteus Facades have helped to transform a defunct 1980s structure in the heart of London into a visually striking, contemporary commercial office space. Once described as unwelcoming and foreboding, York House in Kings Cross, which dates back to 1981, featured a complex brick façade, with a set back entrance and very small windows giving the building a stand-offish appearance as well as a poorly lit interior.Following a £13 million refurbishment, the building, purchased by The Office Group, which provides flexible workspaces in London, Leeds and Bristol, has been transformed into a bright, co-working space, suitable for London’s thriving and growing businesses.Designed by Architects dMFK, the 70,000sq. ft, eight storey redevelopment features both modern and traditional elements. An original Torigenus cast aluminium sculpture sits on the east side of the building, created by sculptor Geoffrey Clarke, whilst bold new additions include a double height entrance with offices above, as well as a set back roof extension and terrace on the 7th floor.

POSIglaze Privacy Glass Balcony Installation

Pure Vista Ltd

Privacy glass on a balcony is becoming a more frequent request. This installation by AC Fabrications in Cornwall on a domestic property perfectly displays how a glass privacy screen can be used. The partially frosted glass increases privacy for those on the balcony, people at ground level will not be able to see them. The non-frosted section allows the residents to enjoy their view from the privacy of their balcony. Taller glass on one side extends the privacy even more, and also will act as a windbreak. Frameless glass balustrade is often used as a windbreak on balconies, the solid pane of glass protecting those on the balcony. The installer has used POSIglaze base fit Silver brushed channel. Designed to provide the greatest possible adjustment opportunities, this system enables each panel to be perfectly aligned during, or even after, installation. POSIglaze is the perfect choice for residential to light commercial installations where up to 1.5kN frameless glass balustrade is required. This innovative patented and market leading screw-clamp technology locks glass panels into position effortlessly, with four immobilising fasteners per meter of channel.

Making the impossible possible

Making the impossible possible

RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd

UNIZO office building CHALLENGE Dedalus Architects specified zinc for waterproofing the timber frame UNIZO office building in Eeklo. Not only for the roof, but also for the facade and bottom side of a unique construction detail. To be precise, waterproofing horizontally, vertically and even upside down! To entirely cover the structure however, appeared not to be possible when using zinc. If you opt to use this traditional waterproofing material a ventilated air space must be provided underneath the zinc covering. This of course entails an opening for ventilation purposes underneath the roof edge, if not, condensation will occur. In the case of a building where the facade has to connect seamlessly with the roof and the underside, leaving an opening is not a possibility. So, despite the attractive appearance of zinc, a waterproofing solution with this material was not an option. SOLUTION Thanks to their collaboration with roofer ALBITUM and previous experiences with RENOLIT roofing products, Dedalus Architects came up with a nice alternative: RENOLIT ALKORDESIGN standing seam imitation. A perfect solution for a difficult challenge. No ventilation needed, no connection problems, the same looks as a zinc roof and, above all, more cost effective!

INTRAsystems

'new beginnings' start with an impressive arrival sequence...Set between St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Old Bailey, 7 Newgate Street offers occupiers 75,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art contemporary office space following extensive refurbishment. An impressive reception, new 7th floor pavilion and communal roof terrace set the tone for the architectural detailing throughout the building. And, with a focus firmly on customer experience and environmental performance, the re-imagined building required a creative Entrance Matting product to match the overall design vision.High-spec design with beautiful curved features seen all around the lobby area needed the flexibility of INTRAflex Radial Entrance Matting to achieve the creative transition. As the only product on the market able to achieve such an aesthetic without compromising functionality, INTRAflex Radial was a fundamental inclusion for the project.Taking ShapeFrom revolving doors to curved glass covering the front entrance, achieving a matching, radial matting design was integral to the design’s success. Having originally requested a free sample to confirm INTRAflex Radial was the product the architects needed to achieve their vision, MORROW + LORRAINE specified our product having seen the quality, functionality and beauty of our product first hand. Opting for black INTRAlux Elite Fibre Inserts coupled with a black anodised finish – the dark colour scheme complements the interior of the newly refurbished building perfectly.Functionality was integral to the project and was integrated into the design. Although the revolving doors are the main entrances into the building, it was important to ensure that our creative Entrance Matting stretched beyond the width of the revolving doors to deal with the London foot traffic entering through the pass doors in order to protect against dirt and moisture. A commercial office space that Boasts 75,000 sq ft of space will obviously experience high levels of footfall, meaning the INTRAflex Radial was specified for its robust, heavy-duty performance as well as it’s flexible design capabilities.Building for the futureThe sustainable qualities of INTRAflex Radial were an essential consideration for this project. With a real focus on leaving as little an environmental impact as possible, the inclusion of the 100% recycled aluminium Entrance Matting and 100% Econyl fibre inserts helped the finished product to achieve Net Zero Carbon status. With our sustainably manufactured products also reducing environmental impacts in practice such as water usage due to less frequent cleaning, we’re proud to have been involved in such an ethically created, architecturally beautiful and truly creative space.

BCL are proud to have been a part of the team delivering the £400m redevelopment of London Bridge Station, designed by Grimshaw Architects and developed by Costain. The redeveloped station expects to see 75 million passengers pass through each year as part of the £6.5 billion Thameslink project. As part of the refurbishment the structure was replaced by pre-cast concrete bridge decks. The underside of these new decks became the ceiling which was then clad with our high performance Alpha acoustic timber panel system. The BCL “Alpha” panel system spans over 7,000 square metres of Western Red Cedar panels in three distinct patterns, providing class A and B sound absorption to reduce noise from passengers and trains. The panels are fire treated to Euro class B, fully demountable, have fully concealed fixings, and involve integrated lighting troughs. Our open configuration system allowed Grimshaw to design the unique panel composition to the highest standard. With the ability to be flexible along with outstanding acoustic performance and the standard of design and installation services, it was clear that our BCL panels should be the system of choice. There were some significant challenges with the project, not only the control of ambient sound from the passengers using the station, but also the structural reverberation produced by on average 18 trains per hour and, given its prominence, the need for upwards blast protection in the event of a terrorist threat. All challenges have been met by the BCL design, making the ceiling system the perfect solution. With the London Bridge Station redevelopment, as with every project BCL take on, our design, manufacture and installation teams provide the knowledge and skill needed to ensure the highest standard of work is achieved at every stage of the project.Client: National RailArchitect: GrimshawMain Contractor: CostainSize: 7,000m2Location: LondonCompletion: September 2016Western Red CedarAcoustic class A & B3 different slat arrangementsFully demountableBomb blast grid system (for maintain structural integrity)

The solar shading is so much more than decoration.About the Fallowfield CampusThe Fallowfield is a student accommodation with 8 multi-storey blocks including a Warden’s flat and Energy Centre, amenity hub, landscaping and external works. Each residence will have 10 bedrooms per floor with ensuite bathroom pods and a shared kitchen. 1,122 student rooms are spread over the blocks with a combined floor area of 32,020m2. The Fallowfield Campus is the main residential campus of the University of Manchester. It’s a vibrant place where thousands of students live alongside residents – creating e a real sense of community. The mix of shops, cafes, bars and a frequent bus service to and from the city centre makes it an ideal location to live.Construction detailsThe blocks are constructed using pre-fabricated lightweight steel framing system panels which provide structure to the building when used along with composite concrete floors. External materials are predominantly buff brickwork with feature elevations picked out in charcoal fibre cement slate roofing and cladding. Study bedrooms incorporate built-in storage and furnishings and a high specification pre-fabricated GRP en-suite shower pod.  Solar shading is much more than decorationThe vertical solar shading system DucoSun Ellips was chosen for this project and supplied by Contrasol. This solar shading system, in which a blade with of 200 mm was chosen, guarantees not only maximum daylight, thanks to the optimal inclination angle and number of louvre blades. At the same time, DucoSun Ellips 200 ensures that the sun’s rays do not get a chance to heat up the Fallowfield interior spaces directly. The vertically installed solar shading system offers maximum privacy while maintaining the view outside.

Hays Galleria Laminate Z Style Lockers Project

Hays Galleria Laminate Z Style Lockers Project

Helmsman

Helmsman had the luxury to manufacture, deliver and install around 180 Z lockers and several benches to commuter washrooms and changing rooms. The client requested wet area Z type lockers, which we provided in heavy-duty aluminium and stainless steel powder-coated bodies and solid grade laminate Z doors. The client choice of colour for the body was the standard ‘ice’ and, the laminate door was Grey Maple (619) from our Abet Laminati collection. Z locker sizes were bespoke to comply with the space. The sizes are 1800H x 378W x 450D + 1mm rivets and 1800H x 298W x 450D + 2mm rivets and end panels to match the lockers. The majority of the lockers are with standard cam locks, and 44 of the Z lockers are with a keyless operation of the Ojmar OCS Pro locks for security and sleek design. These locks have a digital keypad with an integrated handle. In these uncertain times, these locks are hygienic and easy to upkeep. Bespoke bench seating with shoe tray underneath, manufactured from hardwood slats, complement the lockers. The client specifically requested to have these made from hardwood which matches the laminate locker colour.
