THE PROJECTThe ‘Bronze Project’ is a multi-occupancy residential development that has been designed with a distinctive high-end project finish. The development features multiple banks of wall recessed post boxes in the reception lobby area which is located near to the entrance of the building. It is positioned in this area so that both mail delivery personnel can deposit items in a short space of time from a centralised location, and recipients are able to quickly access their deliveries as they pass by the mailboxes. The mailboxes are recessed into the wall which maximise the available space and ensure that Health & Safety requirements are conformed to.The mailbox model used in the ‘Bronze Project’ is the COM 2 Steel Door – 127 product. This type of horizontal mailbox is ideal for developments that require a large number of mailboxes to securely store deliveries for recipients in a restricted amount of space. The horizontal dimensions of the product (small height, large width with a relatively large depth) allow for multiple mailboxes to be stacked on top of each other, maximising the quantity of products in one area. Each mailbox has been engraved with a number which corresponds to their apartment address.

They approached Brookhouse for a solution. Our SolutionAfter visiting the school, our designers determined that the best solution was to create a open unisex washroom. By turning the washrooms into one washroom and creating an opening to the corridor meant that supervision and visibility into the area reduced the behaviour issues. Asticus Building

Asticus Building

Lazenby

The Asticus Building is a cutting-edge circular office space in the heart of South West London. The light-filled reception area features 250m2 of our Light Natural polished concrete, meticulously installed to complement a statement feature wall. We worked with Iconic Build and Aukett Swanke to create an innovative curved shuttering system. This allowed us to pour the concrete at a consistent distance from the wall, navigating an intricate curved design that featured metal fins and uplighters — all set within the floor. The concrete also flows into three lift reveals while four electrical floor box lids are infilled — cast at just 20mm thick — for a seamless finish. With sustainability in mind, we installed a 100mm void former to reduce the overall depth of the floor by 50%. This allowed us to halve the amount of concrete and cement required leading to significant carbon reductions. Installation was completed in just one week and handed back to the contractor. We returned at the end of the project for our signature seal and polish, ensuring that the floor achieved +36PTV in the wet — a gold standard anti-slip rating.

Preston Primary School - Grange Junior free standing canopy

Able Canopies Ltd

The ChallengePreston Primary School required cover for their outdoor play area so that their pupils could play outside in all weather conditions at their school in Devon. The school liked the appearance and practicality of the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy, yet due to the fact that they did not want to fix a canopy to their existing building, they requested information on the free standing canopies available. They also had a fixed budget and therefore required a canopy that would fit into their budget without compromising on quality and size. The SolutionAble Canopies suggested the Grange Junior Free Standing Canopy as the ideal shelter solution for them due to its similar appearance to the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy, and the fact it also shared many of the Coniston's benefits including its ability to be constructed to an unlimited length. As a free standing structure the Grange Junior does not need to be fixed to a building or other structure which matched Preston Primary school's needs. It benefits from a robust steel frame which is covered with polycarbonate roof panels that offer high UV protection from the sun, making this product ideal for an educational environment.

Structural Waterproofing - Private Residence

Delta Membrane Systems Ltd

The Scope of the project was to provide a structural waterproofing solution to a private dwelling with new build extension. The property, situated on a sloping site gave the opportunity for the waterproof design to utilise the properties environment to allow for natural discharge of any potential water ingress. The property was detached and retaining to the front and side elevations where the retaining ground slopes down and away from the property to a garden that continues to slope down to a small stream. The retaining walls on either elevation rise at their highest point to approximately 1500mm above the internal floor level. The internal walls of the property were original brick to the front and new cavity built concrete block. The floor to what was the original house is of solid concrete construction joining on to a newer block and beam floor construction. When designing the most appropriate waterproofing system to any given situation, various design factors require addressing such as (but not limited to), final use of the building, the grade of waterproofing requirement under the British Standard, structural considerations based on the form of construction and in some cases, satisfying the requirements of building warranty providers.

Ecocrib BMJV, M62 J10 12 widening scheme

Hahn Plastics Ltd

The ChallengeIn 2018 a joint venture of Bam Nuttall and Morgan Sindall was awarded the £200 million smart motorway scheme by Highways England. These works were to improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and the M60. This involved improving the link road between these two busy Highways which is the M62 J10-12.Many Embankments needed to be retained to fit the new ERAs and to allow room for many of the gantries that are needed on a smart motorway scheme. One of the main challenges with all Highway Schemes is coordinating works around your fellow contractors, this can be tough at times with works spread over such a small distance. With careful planning, this was overcome and the work flowed continuously for the duration of our time on the schemeA durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance wall solution with a Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme and British Board of Agreement (BBA) certificate was required. The SolutionA sizeable number of mass gravity EcoCrib retaining walls are now built along the M62 J10-12. A total of 44 structures equating to 1546m of walling is now spread across the 3 junctions. With construction speeds exceeding 50m2 a day and a design life in excess of 120 years, EcoCrib is durable, and the most highly sustainable retaining solution. Designed, supplied and installed by PC Construction, certified by the BBA and HAPAS in 2012.EcoCrib profiles are manufactured entirely from recycled UK plastic (bottle tops, car bumpers etc) with any wastage or surplus material re-processed to form new EcoCrib profiles.EcoCrib can be recycled when it reaches the end of its useful life. When considering solutions for developments of all kinds, the lifetime cost means EcoCrib is the more efficient choice.2984 SQM of EcoCrib was used on the scheme, equivalent to 222 tonnes of plastic waste diverted from landfill.

Able Canopies Ltd

Royal Liverpool University Hospital, MerseysideContractor: Saxon ContractingProduct Installed: 2no Kensington Junior Wall Mounted Entrance CanopiesCanopy Sizes: 2no.2.8m x 1.5mFrame Colour: Black-Grey, RAL 7021Installation Date: September 2022The BriefThe Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Merseyside were having a new state of the art facility built to replace their existing site which could no longer accommodate the demands the hospital was required to achieve. The new hospital would feature 641 single en-suite bedrooms including 40 critical care beds, 41 emergency department spaces and 66 acute medical unit spaces, making it a very welcome upgrade by staff and locals.Saxon Contracting were working on the project alongside the main contractors and asked us to send an estimate for two Kensington Junior Wall Mounted Entrance Canopies. They specifically required safety glass to cover the commercial canopies, which was perfectly achievable because the Kensington range is available with a choice of solid polycarbonate or toughened glass panels. The SolutionWe sent an estimate as requested for the two canopies, both 2.8m x 1.5m with Black-Grey (RAL 7021) frames as requested.Because both entrance canopies were to be fixed onto external lift shafts which did not have the usual steel internal supports that we would usually fix to, and we were therefore required to resin fix the canopies into a concrete wall, it was important that these canopies were supplied with site specific structural calculations. We are able to provide full site-specific structural calculations for each project we undertake if required, so this wasn’t a problem. The InstallationThe installation was carried out over two phases with the first phase including the installation of the first fix brackets into the concrete wall. There was an issue when installing the first fix brackets because the lift shafts did not have a bridge installed. However, we liaised with the contractors, and they were able to add birdcage scaffolding onto the lifts which solved the issue, resulting in us installing the brackets as required. We then left site as planned so that the other contractors onsite could install the panelling onto the lift shafts.Once the panelling was completed, we returned to site when scheduled to complete phase two which included the installation of the canopies onto the brackets. The hospital was officially opened in October 2022 with patients and staff making good use of the shelter above the lifts to keep them dry when entering and leaving. The canopies also help to make the lifts safter by reducing the slip hazard of driving rain.

The Gables, Musker Street

Knauf Insulation Ltd

When Formby Point Construction needed to specify the insulation for The Gables, an exclusive housing development in Crosby, the project had multiple objectives. Firstly, the company wanted to go beyond the thermal and acoustic requirements outlined in the building regulations. Secondly, with such a large number of applications across multiple construction types, Formby Point Construction wanted to use one manufacturer and supplier to specify the correct product for each application. This would ensure ease of installation and ensure the project was delivered on budget. With this in mind, Formby Point Construction, consulted Formby-based builders’ merchant, Huws Gray, who referred it to Knauf Insulation. For the separating floor applications, Knauf Insulation recommended Knauf Insulation OmniFit® Roll 40, a versatile, non-combustible Euroclass A1 reaction to fire classification Glass Mineral Wool insulation that provides both excellent thermal and acoustic performance. Knauf Insulation also recommended Knauf Insulation DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 for the masonry cavity external walls, Knauf Insulation Masonry Party Wall Slab for separating walls to comply with Document E and Knauf Insulation Loft Roll 40 for the insulation of the loft.As well as considering the comfort of the homeowner, Formby Point Construction considers the welfare of its employees as part of its decision making. In addition to excellent thermal and acoustic performance, Knauf Insulation scored highly on this aspect thanks to the ECOSE® Technology, its patented sustainable bio-based binder. Products manufactured with ECOSE® Technology contain no added phenol or formaldehyde, and they are 70% less energy-intensive than products manufactured with traditional formaldehyde-based binder. They have no odour, are softer to touch, making them much more pleasant to handle and install. They have also achieved the best possible Eurofins Gold Certificate for Indoor Air Comfort, contributing to a high level of indoor air quality for installers and homeowners alike.Once the specification had been agreed, Knauf Insulation then worked with Huws Gray to price the project and take advantage of volume discounts. This meant that Formby Point Construction had some additional budget for insulation. The company therefore decided to install Knauf Insulation Acoustic Roll within the stud walls between all rooms, going above the minimum standard required between bathrooms and bedrooms outlined in Document E.Thanks to Formby Point Construction’s commitment to going above and beyond the regulations, and Knauf Insulation’s high performance Glass Mineral Wool insulation, homeowners at The Gables will enjoy quieter, warmer homes. The Postmark

The Safety Letterbox Company

THE LOCATIONThis incredible luxury development is situated on the site of the Royal Mail Group Depot, Sorting Office, Postal Museum, and the Royal Mail private underground railway network. A very significant project for us to be involved in not only for the relevance of Royal Mail but also because SLB manufactured and installed the Mount Pleasant sorting office mailboxes on this site over 20 years ago.THE PROJECTThe Postmark sits on a 6-acre land which provides 681 new homes and 20,000 sq. commercial space that includes a cinema room, relaxing lobbies, a state-of-the-art gym, and a roof terrace that looks over Farrington.THE PRODUCTThe Safety Letterbox Company supplied two different mailbox types for The Post Mark. After considering the specifications and the design of our projects, the Interior Designers chose the Tile mailbox and the FR2 mailbox. The Tile mailbox is a unique model in many ways, boxes sit snugly next to each other due to the innovative SLB developed hinge mechanism, allowing doors to open in their own space, hence the Tile appearance, other usual features are removed to simplify its appearance with a slot rather than a letter flap. The mailboxes also showcase our Vitreous Enamel finish. Vitreous Enamel is a thin layer of glass fused at a high temperature onto the metal surface. This is the perfect finish for our Tile mailboxes as it gives the product a bespoke finish. This Tile mailbox is an in-front/out-front horizontal product making it safe and secure for the residents in the building. The Tile Mailbox is very versatile in colour options too, on this project, the Interior Designers required the mailboxes to be the same colour as the wall which was Polaris Blue (RAL 1649).The other mailboxes The Safety Letterbox Company supplied for this project were FR2, a 2-hour fire-rated mailbox that is suitable for horizontally storing A4-sized mail for both front entry and front retrieval. The Fire Rated 2 mailbox has been developed to restrict the spread of fire for up to two hours only and if recessed into a fire-rated wall, will maintain the integrity of the fire-rated wall for up to two hours. FR2 is the perfect mailbox solution when placed in the main emergency exit. The FR2 is customisable, and The Postmark wanted a similar product to The Tile mailbox but with extra safety precautions. The FR2 mailboxes were all recessed and banked 3 high by 7 wide with the same Polaris blue colour making the mailboxes blend into the wall. The Post Mark also wanted to make the mailboxes practical for their residents, so they added a standard engraving with black infill.

Having a total glazed area of 3,100m2, the aluminium curtain wall carries over 40 different types of IG units, along with high density foam inserts utilised alongside decoupling joints in the mullion section - achieving 50 Dnfw flanking sound reduction, as well as 37 dB sound reduction for noise outside the building. In addition to achieving high levels of thermal insulation, being fabricated from aluminium, the curtain walling frame elements can be recycled, helping to achieve the BREEAM rating of Excellent.
