Emseal BEJS used to seal Parapet & wing wall joints on the new Dodmoor Bridge A45, Daventry Link Road in Northamptonshire

NCC – Emseal Movement Joints

Client: Highways Agency, England, with Northampton CC Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty Main Products Used: Emseal BEJSEmseal BEJS used to seal Parapet & Wing wall joints on the new A45 Dodsmoor Bridge in Northamptonshire:This new bridge forms part of the A45 Daventry Link Road at Dodmoor in Northampton, where the wing-wall joints and the parapet joints with the precast elements provided a challenge for the engineers. These joints had to be able to accommodate the anticipated high levels of movement, but the site measured widths of the joints varied from around 25-30mm up to around 100mm. The potential movement, including movement in different planes, their variable form and dimensions, were too much for any ‘normal’ preformed joints, or extruded, gun-applied, so-called ‘mastic’ joint sealants to be used. This is clearly evidenced in the inset picture, where the specified extruded sealant was already seen to be failing under this loading. Additionally, the wing-wall joints were to be back-filled with a watertight seal. Following previous experience with difficult and complex movement jointing requirements, the Balfour Beatty engineers discussed the situation with NCC and the Emseal BEJS System was identified as an ideal solution. Emseal BEJS is available in different widths that can also be precompressed further for ease of installation, it is fast and easy to install, plus importantly requires no invasive mechanical fixings.

In the course of the restructuring and refurbishment of a multi-storey library tower (MST) for the School of Law and the linkage of the tower to the adjacent Peter Froggatt Centre (PFC) to form a new student hub at Queen’s University in Belfast, the architects TODD decided to use Wienerberger’s Lincoln Red brick to tie the scheme into its surroundings. Pontypridd riverside scheme showcases Rockfon to the power of three

Rockfon

Forming an important part of a £200m redevelopment, the flagship three building Llys Cadwyn (Chain Court) mixed-use riverside development encompasses office and retail units alongside a state-of-the-art library, café, leisure fitness and community facilities in the heart of Pontypridd. Owner client, Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council, awarded the design of this eye-catching project to Darnton B3 Architects, who have worked with Willmott Dixon since 2018, to bring the innovative, ambitious £38m scheme to fruition. Around 9500m2 of Rockfon acoustic ceiling and wall systems are installed throughout the three building scheme to add a wow factor and help create healthy interiors where people can work, visit, study, socialise and relax. Architecture that looks and feels good The facades of two of the buildings are glazed, with those facing the riverside designed with sun-deflecting vertical fins in a mix of warm primary colours from yellow through to orange and red – adding a positive, contemporary accent. The third building sits in contrast to the others with its organic, aardvark curved outer shell clad completely in shimmering zinc tiles, reminiscent of the futuristic Bullring in Birmingham and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. The twin buildings required high levels of sound absorption due to the predominantly open-plan office interiors on their upper floors. Independent research shows that stress levels are reduced by 27% and focus is increased by 48% by improved acoustics in these environments. The high light reflectance offered by our ceiling systems optimises natural light, aiding wellbeing and helping provide the best working conditions whilst minimising energy usage and costs. Ensuring the desired Shhh In the Library, sound control was an obvious specification requirement. Happily, Rockfon ranges - including Rockfon® Universal™ Baffles - offer acoustic performance which deliver the desired Shh. Elsewhere in the café, gym and community spaces, our products are tough enough to deal with the impact of heavy use. Darnton B3 Project Architect, Martin Hurley, “I met with our client to discuss the acoustics in a large atria which sits between the children’s, and general reference libraries. We agreed to create a feature art wall using a selection of colours influenced by the council’s own corporate identity. The completed design works really well, delivering the visual impact and sound control we desired. Rockfon Eclipse® wall panels were used to create the stylish art wall, featuring dark greys, purples, turquoise, teal, lime and orange which were NCS-matched. Eclipse can be specified in a variety of shaped formats with a clean minimalistic A-edge and unlimited custom colour matching. Quick and easy to install, the fixing kit allows panels to be set at varying distances from the wall to enhance creative possibilities. Delivering the dream Tonypandy-based M&P Group, were responsible for the installation. The firm’s Andrew Pearce commented, “Co-ordinating the process of installation across three buildings within a tight, riverside, city-centre site presented particular challenges. It was vital the supply line remained on schedule, with deliveries on-time and in good order – something the Rockfon team helped ensure. In fact, the project came together well and everyone is very pleased with the completed job.” Nevill Long Area Sales Manager, Mike Parkin, “This was a technically and aesthetically interesting project to be involved with. It was a pleasure to work with Rockfon to ensure the correct materials were delivered on time and in full.” Great performance and fabulous looks Rockfon Specification Manager Rowan Green, “It was really beneficial to be part of the design specification process for this landmark build from an early stage. A guiding requirement was to achieve the least visible grid, using a selection of Rockfon ranges to create aesthetically pleasing results with high levels of sound absorption. In addition to the Eclipse feature wall, versatile, technologically advanced Rockfon Blanka® was installed throughout the three buildings, with specialised Blanka Bas utilised in meeting rooms to promote speech intelligibility. Rockfon® Koral™ was used exclusively within washrooms and lobbies.” The Rockfon Blanka range offers a wide choice of alternatives for installation and usage. All embody Class A sound absorption (aw 1.00), 87% light reflection and >99% light diffusion and room to room sound Insulation >26dB. Blanka’s easy clean, anti-static surface prolongs product life and is non-directional, which speeds up installation, saving time and money. Within the futuristic building, an arrangement of elegant, circular, Rockfon Eclipse islands, in white, are hung from ceiling wires, creating the illusion they are floating in mid-air. In common with other Rockfon ranges, Rockfon Koral offers excellent sound absorption and the highest fire safety characteristics. It is easy to clean with a vacuum or a damp cloth and is available in semi-concealed and visible grid options.

The University of York has 9 colleges and in each college we have residential students. Mark Barber added: “One of the big plus points of it, is that we are able to feed Exos on a nightly basis with records from our people data base which contains all our current staff and students- so we always have up-to-date list of university members in the Exos data base. One of the by-products of that, is that we can also feed through into Exos expiry dates of when staff or students are about to leave so without any other interventions, by setting certain parameter within the interface, people’s access right can be revoke automatically and universally in the dormakaba system”. Further developments under one unified dormakaba Exos system, included control of doors at the Physics and Electronics building that has been added onto the existing campus. A further online Exos doors, C- Levers and pExtra cylinders were installed at various new department buildings throughout Heslington East, including Theatre, Film and TV (TFTV), Law and Management (L&M), Computer Science Building (CSB) and the Communal Area(HUB). Creativity and innovation are embedded in the DNA of the company and its team from the very beginning. Thanks to this, they manage to find a solution to a problem that negatively affects our productivity and well-being, namely poor air quality. This is how ESCREO Clean Air was born - the latest addition to ESCREO's carbon neutral portfolio of functional paints. ESCREO Clean Air is an interior air purifying paint, which reduces air pollution by more than 90.1%. One of the magic components is an enhanced mineral which attracts and neutralises harmful pollutants, incl. VOCs, odours, air chemicals and CO2. The non-toxic environmentally friendly water-based formula is a great collaboration between modern technology and a clever "problem-solving" approach, through which ESCREO can help commercial building owners use hitherto passive areas such as walls to further purify the air indoors, making the premises more attractive to current and future users.

Harris Academy Greenwich, Greenwich

urbanspec

Harris Academy Greenwich is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form with academy status since September 2012, located in the Eltham area of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Principal George McMillan describes Harris Academy Greenwich as a ‘happy and highly successful inner-city London 11-18 school with a thriving 6th Form.’ The academy is a member of the Harris Federation, a group of 44 primary and secondary academies in and around London educating 30,000 young people. Each academy is led and run by its Principal; responsible for creating a culture that ensures the pupils get an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment. The smaller than average-sized secondary school, with an admission number of 180 for year 7, was rated as ‘Outstanding’ in all categories in their first Ofsted report as an academy in 2014. The Eltham Foundation School was previously rated as ‘satisfactory’ before converting to an academy. Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development were identified as a very strong feature in the school’s curriculum. Leadership and management skills of pupils were also assessed as outstanding, driven by the enthusiastic and inspirational partnership between the principal and executive principal and supported by skilled and committed school leaders who help drive improvement relentlessly. Over 90% of all sixth form students went on to University the year prior to the report.Streetspace Urban Structures stunning but functional TRITON canopy was identified as a cost-effective cover solution; providing a large open area with shade and shelter, allowing students to enjoy the breakout social and dining space all-year round. Our great looking architectural design sympathetically complemented the academy’s adjoining modern school building. This included matching the umbra grey steelwork finish with the curtain walling detail on their existing building. The integral over-door section of our design provided additional canopy protection; sheltering exits and entrances without unnecessarily compromising light elsewhere. The potential hazard of ice forming in colder months was factored and prevented with our rainwater management system plumbed straight into below ground drains. Our package covered all groundworks, including special provision to reinstate a recently paved area in front of a new building. For a final co-ordinated flourish, street furniture was supplied; adding a contemporary feel to this smart project. This impactful project showcases our technical ability and the quick installation, completed during a break in the school term, demonstrates how a transformative change, reaping considerable benefits, can be realised with minimal disruption to students and staff.‘Our academy was fortunate to be included in the latest DfE Priority Schools Building programme, however, due to the stringent budget restrictions imposed the internal common areas were greatly reduced, including the dining area. With a school roll of 1250 students managing dining on a staggered basis proved to be extremely difficult, therefore we investigated the possibility of utilising the external hardcourt area adjacent to the dining room. Our concerns were ensuring that students were able to access the area without being open to the elements and also overheating in the summer months. The Streetspace design team meet with the academy and designed the canopy to meet all of our requirements, including adding extensions to provide full cover over exit doorways and all rainwater to be connected into our existing drainage system. The installation was project managed throughout and since installation, we have not had any defects or reason to call them back on site. The product is very robust, attractive and with the colour matching, they achieved to our external cladding appears to have been part of the original build and not an extension. This was one of the easier projects to manage due the service and professionalism of the company from start to finish.’

The Pumphouse, Barry

The Pumphouse, Barry

DS Properties Employ Complementary Paving Solution at Historic PumphouseDS Properties undertook the task of redeveloping The Pumphouse in Barry which previously formed part of Barry’s historic dock complex and provided one of the few hydraulic power buildings in Wales. The building had gone unused for several years but had always remained a local landmark and so the decision was made to regenerate the site for housing and commercial accommodation. Retaining the nostalgic style of the historical Pumphouse was hugely important to DS Properties and therefore the developer was seeking hard landscaping products that would complement the traditional surroundings. Tobermore provided the perfect solution in the form of vintage-themed block paving product, Tegula, and striking plank paving product, Manhattan.Alex Knight, Development Surveyor at DS Properties, explained the project objectives: “The Pumphouse is a Grade II listed building constructed in the 1880’s and the aim of the refurbishment and new build scheme was to create the first local purpose-built live/work facility at the centre of Barry’s commercial regeneration, offering 14 live/work apartments, office units, a gym and a restaurant and cafe.”Acanthus Holden Architects was appointed to design the redevelopment works and the new build elements. DS Properties advised the architect that the landscape design needed to incorporate paving products to complement the period-themed Pumphouse building. Alex commented:“As tarmac was incorporated on part of the site, we wanted to break up the space and create a more visually attractive external area. The landscape needed to harmonise with the historic buildings and be sympathetic to the traditional backdrop on site.”ALEX KNIGHT, DEVELOPMENT SURVEYOR AT DS PROPERTIESThe choice of paving supplier was a relatively easy choice for DS Properties as Alex explained: “Tobermore products came highly recommended by one of our trusted suppliers, Robert Price, and after examining product samples kindly provided by the Tobermore South Wales Sales team, the aesthetics and quality was a key factor in confirming our decision to use Tobermore products.”Tobermore’s Tegula and Manhattan block paving was specified as the best method to meet the design vision for the project. Tegula is manufactured with an aged, antique appearance and so it was the perfect choice for the Pumphouse in creating a rustic look and complementing the historic structure beautifully.Manhattan is a plank paving system and although contemporary in style and contrasting to the traditional ambience of Tegula, the addition of this product reflected the modern new buildings on site. Manhattan is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a similar look to natural granite. As part of the landscape design, the linear paving product was delicately intertwined with Tegula to create a stylish square border pattern running throughout. The integration of Tobermore’s Tegula and Manhattan created a fabulous infusion of traditional and modern styles. The project was completed in early 2016, breathing new life into the town of Barry. Although only one building, the Pumphouse in an integral part of the regeneration of the town and is hoped to act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area.Alex commented on the result of the redevelopment scheme: “Thankfully there were no issues encountered during the design and construction process. We are absolutely delighted with the result and in reference to the hard landscaping works, we would most certainly recommend the products and service provided by Tobermore – it was excellent.”

The roof garden provides co-workers with a valuable communal area to foster company culture or escape from their desk. The terrace offers a flexible space to relax, socialise or entertain while taking in the views of Belfast city and beyond. The central design aspiration was to bring a New York or London feel to Belfast city. It was essential that the roof terrace hard landscaping aligned with the design ethos. SolutionContemporary Mayfair Flags installed on pedestals were the perfect choice  Tobermore’s Mayfair Flags with their granite aggregate contemporary finish were the perfect choice for Eagle Star House. A contrasting finish was created on the terrace in the colours Silver and Graphite. A simple yet effective stacked laying pattern was deployed which adds to the clean look of the contemporary roof terrace. The commercial space has more of a boutique hotel feel than a city centre office. The Mayfair paving flags were installed onto adjustable pedestals, creating a level surface throughout the terrace. Tobermore Deliver Striking Finish for New Business Quarter in Leatherhead.Tobermore provided HLM Architects with a variety of paving products that were used to create the striking landscape at The Square, an exciting business quarter in Leatherhead, Surrey. The Square comprises four impressive office buildings that total 68,851 sq. ft. in size and the project is the first development in the South East to achieve an EPC A rating.Joe Harries, Associate at HLM Architects, explained that his aim in designing The Square was “to create a contemporary office environment within a high quality and attractive landscape setting.”Joe commented that different hard landscaping solutions were considered for the project but paving was chosen as the superior solution:“We were looking for a range of quality products that were robust, aesthetically pleasing and cost effective, and we found that Tobermore were ahead of their peers in this area of the market.”Joe Harries, Associate at HLM ArchitectsIt was these factors that convinced HLM Architects to specify Tobermore Manhattan, Sienna Duo and Shannon Duo block paving products in creating a high quality finish for the site.Manhattan is a plank paving product that is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a sparkling finish, similar to natural granite.Manhattan mixed length units were selected in the colours of Silver, Mid Grey and Graphite for the main area on site. This signature blend is part of Tobermore’s Constellations and has been named ‘Pavo’. Discover more about Tobermore’s Constellations. Similar to Manhattan, Sienna Duo is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer. Sienna was installed in the rich colour of Sandstone on the parking bays, creating a striking, modern look alongside Manhattan.Shannon Duo in the warm, blended tones of Heather was installed on the walkways surrounding the four office buildings on site. In contrast to the other Tobermore products specified, this product is manufactured with a smooth surface layer that is ideal for pedestrian use and wheeled traffic.Joe explained the design concept developed with Tobermore products: “The colour, texture and unit sizes were varied to create unique character and function to the main circulatory and recreational spaces, providing a strong sense of arrival leading up to the central square that forms the heart of the development.“Conceptually, we tried to create a contemporary, inspiring and inviting centralised hard landscaped amenity enclosed by both proposed and existing soft landscape infrastructure. This formal epicentre is the main focus of the scheme, with a large and striking public art feature, high quality paving, seating and subtle lighting. From this the landscape character gradates out to the informal and ecologically enhanced edges of the site, with extensive amenity planting used to break up the car parking areas in between.”Reflecting on the result of project, Joe commented; “The hard landscaping products used worked well and we were extremely pleased with the service provided by Tobermore. For good quality concrete and granite aggregate paving, Tobermore must be considered as one of the market leaders in terms of quality of product, service and competitiveness.”
