ASF Balmoral Parapet Wall Post and Panel, Sale Town Hall

ASF Balmoral Parapet Wall Post and Panel, Sale Town Hall

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

ASF were already doing extensive works at Sale Town Hall using the ASF Balmoral Panel Post with sight gap, employed as pedestrian guardrail. To the rear of the Town Hall is the Bridgewater Canal which is followed by the Bridgewater Way. An existing wall was being heightened alongside the footpath to make it higher than the mixed use development area directly to the rear of the building. Wishing to ensure a suitable barrier but not completely obscure the view, the client chose the ASF Balmoral Parapet Post and Panel System for the wall top. This allows people to stand on the higher ground and still enjoy the vistas along the canal whilst ensuring the wall itself reaches an overall height to meet the required standards.

Commercial Heritage - Joseph Black Building

Smart Architectural Aluminium

The first phase of the refurbishment of the University of Glasgow’s Joseph Black Building is well underway, with Smart Architectural Aluminium’s Alitherm Heritage window and door system being installed throughout. The £34 million refurbishment of this iconic, A-listed building has been designed to give it a completely new lease of life, preserving the design heritage of the building while introducing modern, high-performance, high-quality materials.Due for completion in September 2020, this first phase of work covers the replacement of all the windows and doors in the external envelope of the 17,000m² building. The work was commissioned to upgrade the fabric of the building, improve its efficiency and performance and make it a better research, learning and teaching environment for staff and students.More than 1,100 Smart Alitherm Heritage windows are being installed, with the windows featuring a new transom shadow detail, developed specifically for this project within just eight weeks. This extraordinary turnaround included the production and approval of two sample transoms and the manufacture of three new extrusion dies. The detailed design also included the provision for new EPDM gaskets to be used, to ensure that none of the gasket was visible from the unusual drip detail above the window hinges.A stunning feature of the building is the 10.8m-tall window units, installed above the main reception and stairwells, the design of which has been faithfully recreated using the proven Alitherm Heritage system. Developed to precisely match the slim profiles of original steel windows that are a feature of heritage projects and listed buildings such as this, Alitherm Heritage nevertheless delivers the exceptional thermal performance associated with modern aluminium systems. The Joseph Black building is home to the University’s School of Chemistry and houses a combination of lecture rooms, laboratories and offices. As a consequence, the refurbishment programme has been subject to detailed planning to reduce impact on building users. In terms of matching the original window profiles, it was critical that the design maintained the essence of the building’s ‘art-modern’ design and replicated the lines of 1930’s steel windows. The team designed the new cill and gasket details to ensure that an almost exact match to the original design was achieved.Alitherm Heritage has helped maintain the aesthetic integrity of the original building, but at the same time enabled the staff, students and estates management team to benefit from the comfort, performance and cost efficiencies that modern aluminium materials deliver.

New Clement W20 steel windows for Grade II* listed Town Hall

New Clement W20 steel windows for Grade II* listed Town Hall

Clement Windows Group

The town of Whitchurch in Hampshire is a special place: most of the town is a Conservation Area, the amount of wildlife in and near the River Test means its course and banks are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the town is the Gateway to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the third largest of Britain's 46 AONBs. The current Town Hall was built by a local landowner, Lord Middleton, in or around 1791, using some of the timbers from the Old Town House that had stood in the centre of The Square, and was demolished in the 1780s. During the 1800s the building had many tenants including the Mechanics Institute and a furniture warehouse.Records show that in the 1900s the building was also put to a variety of uses. The local Magistrate held sessions, two rooms were used to shelter Military Units passing through Whitchurch, and in 1919 the building was used by the National Federation of Discharged Soldiers and Sailors. Parish Councils were set up in 1896, but met at the Poor Law Institute (the Gables). More recently, the National Fire Service was accommodated in the lower middle section of the building. In 1946, Midland Bank, (now HSBC) was in the lower right hand corner. The Town Band practiced here, and the British Legion used the upper floor. Recently, an extensive program of refurbishment works has taken place to improve the Grade II* Listed Building. This included new steel doors and windows by Clement for the front elevation. The Clement W20 range was chosen for both, with krypton gas filled units. Ash pull handles perfectly complement the steel doors and Boleyn handles were chosen for the steel windows. Sarah Weir, Clerk at Whitchurch Town Council said ““The Town Council are really pleased with the new windows and door which are modern, practical and in keeping with the historic building”.

New build properties allow for creativity and flexibility, offering the house builder the chance to design their ideal home.Historical accuracy was very important to this client, who wanted her new build in Hutton Mount to look like a classic Georgian house.Westbury worked closely with the architect and homeowner to make sure every detail was considered, mimicking the generously proportioned windows and panes typical of the Georgian era.The owner chose to have spring-balanced, sliding sash windows, which were set behind the render to achieve the recessed 20mm frame margin characterised by traditional weighted sash windows. She also specified Classique glazing within a Legacy frame. This specially designed Westbury product features a slimmer glass unit within a slimmer frame and sash. It gives the impression of a single glazed period window while offering the many benefits of modern double glazing. The 6-panel entrance door and sidelights sit perfectly beneath the roof canopy which is complemented with Westbury pilasters, brackets and mouldings. The property also has a garage that we fitted with traditional open-out, part glazed, part panelled doors finished in Moss Grey. This project is a perfect example of mixing classic features with a new build. INSTANTA GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND TO MEET LONDON NHS TRUST’S REQUIREMENTS - SUREFLOW TOUCH WALL MOUNTED

Zip Water

Demonstrating flexibility and meeting requirements where other manufacturers weren’t able to has seen Instanta products specified at a hospital within the London NHS Trust.Inevitably, patient access to hot water needs careful consideration to ensure any risk of scalding is minimal. A decision was made to ensure water boilers within patient areas have a maximum dispensing temperature of 76°C - lower than the majority of standard water boilers. Not having used Instanta before, but needing a change from the existing supplier that couldn’t offer an adjustable temperature, the technical supervisor researched alternatives and was impressed with Instanta’s wide product range. “On reviewing our existing water boilers, we decided that we needed a product that could actually be modified so its maximum temperature is set at 76°C, an important safety measure for users,” commented the technical supervisor. “We were impressed with Instanta’s range. One of their wall-mounted products was just what we were after, however, its temperature was only adjustable to 80°C.The hospital’s enquiry led to further discussions with Instanta’s operations director and a feasibility study determined that it was indeed possible to modify an existing product; a 6 litre SureFlow Touch Wall Mounted Boiler (WMS6PB) to achieve the facility’s maximum temperature requirement of 76°C.“Instanta’s willingness to help and meet our requirements has been brilliant,” continued the technical supervisor. “As per our request, they made sure the maximum dispensing temperature was set at 76°C. Over the past year we have monitored this closely and we’re pleased to report that it has remained at this temperature, which affords us invaluable peace of mind.” In total, 20 wall-mounted boilers were purchased and placed in areas where patients have access to water heaters.

The vision for Rochdale Riverside was to provide a revitalised and vibrant town centre incorporating a contemporary architectural form and material palette. In this way it was hoped that it would create a destination experience and re-establish Rochdale as a major shopping centre. The impact of the Stereo-kinetic® wall cladding was fundamental within the design of the project. As described by architects, TP Bennet, “The centrepiece of the scheme, a striking, copper-clad cinema, is set against a background of a dramatic kinetic wall featuring a relief depicting the River Roch, which runs in a culvert underneath the centre”.And also noted within the report by Rochdale Online, “To bring visual interest and activity a unique moving tile wall is proposed which will move with the wind to create rippling effects. It will create a truly distinctive piece of public art and feature at a key entrance point to the town for tram and bus passengers”.Lang+Fulton fitted the 77,500 stainless steel tiles off-site using a template corresponding to the architects design and supplied their panels fully finished with protective, recyclable wrapping for ease of installation.

This system allowed us to provide great acoustic & antivibration performance whilst ensuring the installation was quick to allow us to achieve the programme dates due to the system comprising of elastomeric isolator blocks overlaid with Dry Screed Panels. The clients wished to replicate this, which required selected opening windows to be powder coated in black so as to contrast against the white outer frames. A magnificent 24-pane bay window is a prime feature of the house and shows off this unique design. The clients chose windows from Clement’s EB24 range with rectangular leaded lights.
