Silverstone Experience, Northamptonshire

Silverstone Experience, Northamptonshire

Technal

The Silverstone Interactive Museum is a 600m² motorsport exhibition located at the world famous Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The £22 million building, built with a contribution from the National Lottery Heritage Fund consists of a fully refurbished WWII aircraft hangar and a new two-storey extension which serves as the entrance to the exhibition. The TECHNAL curtain walling was a key part of the design and enabled large spans of glass to the front and rear of the building. This provides contrast to the iridescent finish and rainscreen cladding. This curtain wall system enabled large panel sizes of up to 2.8m high and 2m wide without additional steelwork that would have detracted from the intended design and added to the cost. The exposed location meant that airtightness and thermal efficiency were also design considerations. Our curtain walling features a thermally broken construction and high levels of wind and weather resistance. Due to the nature of the building and location close to the circuit, the goal with the acoustic requirements was to achieve a balance of reducing the sound from the track without completely eliminating it. This was achieved with TECHNAL systems using standard double glazing without the need for acoustic glass.

Senior Architectural Systems Ltd

The creation of this new store for supermarket chain Lidl is a part of the larger residential led mixed-use Waterline development which has seen the creation of a striking 27 storey residential tower block providing 251 new homes in Wembley, London.Formerly known as Minavil House, the demolition of the derelict commercial building has provided ample scope for the regeneration of the wider area and the new mixed use scheme provides a variety of facilities including retail and office space. The ground floor level supermarket has been designed to complement the main buildings whilst providing a practical solution for a high traffic retail space.Our SF52 aluminium curtain wall has been used to great effect on the main façade of the store, with feature fins and sloped glazing elements. To provide safe and secure access, and help reduce maintenance requirements, our robust SPW501 aluminium commercial doors were also installed by our supply chain partner Soundcraft. Designed by Alan Camp Architects, the Waterline development has been built by HG Construction. As well as adding to Senior’s order book in London and the South East, the creation of the new Lidl supermarket also draws on our expertise of delivering curtain wall and commercial door solutions for the retail sector. The thermal efficiency of our slim line SF52 aluminium curtain wall system makes it ideally suited to reducing the environmental impact of retail buildings, by meeting the requirements of Part L, and also maximising the use of natural light. In fact, our SF52 aluminium curtain wall system made its debut on the flagship Sainsbury’s superstore in Sheffield.

Menai Science Park, Wales

Technal

Located in Anglesey and operated by Bangor University, Menai Science Park is the flagship building for Wales' first dedicated science park. The facility is built to BREEAM Excellent standards and comprises of 5,000 sqm of offices, laboratories and workshop space for up to 700 people - from start-up businesses to large corporate companies. The building's structure features a striking white continuous flowing ribbon that forms wall, floor and roof surfaces and wraps around the glazed facade to the front elevation. The two-storey entrance connects to the main three-storey, traditional brick cavity U-shape building,m which houses the laboratories and offices and features a facade that encloses an open courtyard. Aluminium curtain walling from Technal was installed and spans 74m x 11m. This had to follow the curvature and flow of the ribbon at the point of fabrication. The key area for this facade is the first floor horizontal and sloping ribbon - the curtain walling continues behind the Corian rainscreen. One particularly challenging detail is the 6m glazed linking walkway that connects the innovation area to the brick-built main building. Designed with a double-pitched roof, the curtain walling follows the long contours across the two pitches of the roof at an angle. This involved calculations and modelling to accommodate the difficult compound angles to ensure the desired architectural intent was achieved. Throughout the building, aluminium casement windows have been installed, some as inserts within the facade including automatic opening vents, and to the courtyard elevations. Completing this contemporary outdoor space, the windows are complemented with timber rainscreen panels.
