Bexley Park Sports and Social Club is home to a wide range of sporting facilities and teams, including bowling, squash, football and rugby. They also have a large function room that is available for hire. Read on to learn how Axter was able to help them with a complete roof refurbishment.Project overviewThe original roof had been on the building for over 40 years. It was coming to the end of its serviceable life and was starting to show signs of aging, such as leaks around the rooflights.Axter were brought in to carry out the roof refurbishment of the main building.Overall, this project ran very smoothly and we were incredibly happy with the result. The writing on the barrel roof was a lovely added touch by our Axtershield Installer partner, Henley’s Roofing Ltd.This case study will focus on the main roof. However, as we will touch on towards the end, the client was so pleased with the work that they decided to go on to refurbish the other three roof areas.ChallengesThis was a complex project for several reasons. Several different parts of the main building had been added over time, so there was a change of level details throughout the roof.Part of the building had a barrel roof section, which added an extra level of complexity to the job.As well as this, there were a few existing features, such as a water tank on the roof surrounded by rotten chipboard, which also had to be taken into consideration when it came to planning installation methods.SolutionsGiven the age of the roof and the defects observed, it was recommended that a full overlay be carried out.As well as the specific roofing considerations, Bexley Park Sports and Social Club were looking to keep within a tight budget. For this reason, the single layer overlay solution worked perfectly to provide a cost-effective option. Our Reinforced Bitumen Membranes (RBM) combine strength with longevity to provide a durable waterproofing system with a 20-year guarantee.The rotten chipboard was removed and replaced with timber cladding. Flame free Starcoat® PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) was used for the sections where it was necessary to eliminate fire risk. This cold-applied liquid system provided a great non-flammable solution.Systems in useExcel®Starcoat® PMMAAdditional works carried outThe client was very impressed with the quality of the work carried out on the main roof, and our ability to provide them with a cost-effective solution. The work came in under budget and they were so pleased with the job that they accelerated the project and decided to refurbish the other three club roofs – something that hadn’t been on the cards before. The initial work had provided them with the peace of mind that everything would go to plan and enhance the building, all with minimal disruption to the club. So we went on to refurbish the squash court, changing rooms and storage room roofs.Condition surveys were taken across all four of the roof areas. The additional roofing areas all needed re-decking as they were incredibly warn from ongoing water ingress.This meant we had to strip down to and remove the existing support structure, before installing a new ply deck, ready for the waterproofing works to go ahead. The changing room roof was pitched, adding an extra complexity to the job, as the shingle had to be replaced.

Accoya selected for the renovation of the GeoSouthern Energy’s corporate headquarters. Distributed by Mason’s Mill & lumber, the Accoya cladding was milled into a Vanish Rain Screen profile with a walnut stain for the exterior of the building. Various sizes of Accoya were used ranging widths between 5”-8”. In total 80 m3 of Accoya was used for the project. Accoya was chosen due to its stability & durability making it the perfect fit for designers Kirksey.

The second tallest building in the United Kingdom, and tenth largest building in the world is home to an impressive amount of BLÜCHER EuroPipe! All 62 floors are equipped with stainless steel drainage, from RWP, SVP and food vacuum systems to interceptor foul drainage and disconnecting traps for rainwater.The project spanned over two years, and it was a no brainer that our lightweight, adaptable and push fit system was chosen as the sole supplier.

A dated conservatory area is transformed by Breezefree with a retractable glass roof and polycarbonate curtain walling. Nagan Johnson Architects approached Breezefree to refurbish a dated conservatory area as part of the fit-out of the Cuban restaurant group’s second site in London’s Smithfield district. The brief required a modern retractable glass roof, to replace the old lean-to rooflight, and translucent curtain walling, to replace the dilapidated brick walls and windows...

ASF's Building Protection Corner Bollard was used in the above project. The bollard is set up so that there is one quarter missing on the upright plane so that it fits perfectly on a 90 degree outside wall. The pattern can be adapted to other angles if necessary. Once in place the bollard acts as a wheel buffer for any vehicles getting too close to the corner - thus reducing the risk of damage to either the building or vehicle.

Extensive use of parapet capping from the Pendock Linea building linings range has helped improve weather resistance and aesthetics at a modern student accommodation building in Kingston-upon-Thames.Bespoke manufactured from high quality aluminium with a grey PPC finish, the flat PC-F style parapet capping's are fitted to the entire building to improve the integrity of the flat roof and stop the ingress of water.

Named the 3Ts as it includes trauma, tertiary and teaching care. Visionary architects and long-term client, BDP specified our INTRAflex XT systems with integrated Waterlogic drainage for the first stage - the main entrance building, The Louisa Martindale Building. Approximately eight by ten metres, the Entrance Mat extends from a covered external area, through a large revolving door, side doors and into the internal lobby. Performance was the main objective as the building welcomes over 100,000 patients a year, plus staff and visitors for seven theatres, 15 isolation suites, 28 wards and service departments.Focusing on FunctionalityAs a premier healthcare setting, functionality was paramount. The Entrance Mat efficiently removes water and dirt to prevent slips and keeps visitors safe. The zone 1, external section of the Entrance Mat uses INTRAflex XT with an open construction over the INTRAmatting Waterlogic drainage system to remove rainwater and dirt efficiently (it holds 75 litres per m2 which is then channelled into a waste water drainage system). Combined with hard-wearing and weatherproof rubber inserts, it scrubs and scrapes off large dirt particles before traffic meets the zone 2. From the large revolving door into the lobby, INTRAflex XT is used in its closed construction format, with fibre inserts, for greater comfort and further moisture absorption. A Higher StandardAnother key consideration was strength. The building's multiple-floor-height entrance is fully glazed with services installed at height. Specific access equipment and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) help maintain the building, so we checked their details to ensure the Entrance Mat could efficiently handle the load stress. The Waterlogic system is extremely strong, and we construct it with reinforced supports so that the chosen matting can easily cope with extreme loads. Manufactured to perfectly fit the matwell, the Waterlogic base curves around the 5m wide revolving door. Considering AccessibilityServing such a variety of people with specific needs, accessibility was another important part of the specification. BDP chose materials and finishes for DDA compliance. We have Light Reflecting Values (LRV) for each of our products, so BDP could easily choose which materials were best for contrasting with other flooring and building substrates.We test all our Entrance Matting products for slip ratings, and to ensure that they are wheel and heel proof. The zone 2, internal performance Entrance Matting is a closed construction with fibre inserts to scrape and remove finer debris. Lee Valley Ice Centre originally opened in 1984, and before closing in 2021 welcomed over 279,000 visitors each year. With the old centre reaching the end of its operational life, it was time to design and build a brand new Ice Centre at Lee Valley Regional Park. The new centre, due to open in April 2023 will be home to 2 new ice rinks, doubling the capacity of the old centre, and inviting in new visitors as well as welcoming back those who visited before.As part of the redevelopment of Lee Valley Ice Centre, 95% of the concrete from the old centre was used in the foundations of the new centre. With this and many other environmentally friendly choices made in the construction, Lee Valley Ice Centre will become the UK’s most sustainable Ice Centre.The fully accessible centre will maximise the opportunity for sports for everyone, and with two Olympic-sized Ice Rinks, a brand-new café, gym, exercise studios and various other facilities, Lee Valley will be able to welcome up to 500,000 visitors. The range of facilities will encourage a variety of new visitors, from committed skaters, though to people stopping for a drink in the café before enjoying the green space in Lee Valley Regional Park.At Helmsman, we were pleased to be contacted by the main contractors for Lee Valley, The Buckingham Group, to supply the lockers, cubicles, vanity units and bespoke high-level cladding. We manufactured and installed 268 Bespoke Heavy Duty Laminate Lockers, with a variety of compartment configurations, and a range of different locking options.Our Heavy Duty Laminate lockers are a great option for high traffic areas, as they are more likely to withstand scratches and dents, so were a perfect choice for Lee Valley Ice Centre. The lockers also feature bespoke perforations in the doors and aluminium number plates. A selection of the lockers also have seat stands with the slats in matching laminate. A variety of locks were also used across the lockers in this project, with Ojmar Hasp locks the main choice for users to use their own padlocks, as well as Ojmar coin return locks and Lowe and Fletcher cam locks.The cubicles chosen for this project were our Front Line Cubicles with Hidden Fixings. These cubicles are tailored to suit the needs of the particular project, with bespoke sizing available. The fixings are hidden to provide a smooth surface and aesthetic finish. The cubicles were manufactured with 12mm Solid Grade Laminate from BioCarbon Laminates in colour Luna Grey, a fantastic carbon-neutral option which aligns perfectly with Lee Valley’s aim to be the first sustainable Ice Centre in the UK.As we manufacture all our products in house, and to order, we specialise in bespoke items. The project at Lee Valley Ice Centre featured bespoke high-level cladding, which our highly experienced installation team fitted on-site.Other products on this project included metal framed IPS panels, using both Luna Grey and Elegant Grey laminates from BioCarbon Laminates, and Helmsman High Pressure Laminate Vanity Units.It was great to work alongside Buckingham Group again for the Lee Valley Ice Centre project. A special educational needs school in Salford welcomed an additional sixty pupils across its two sites in Swinton and Irlam this September.Springwood Primary School, which is the only primary school of its kind in the city, increased its overall capacity to three hundred pupils from nursery to Year 6.The expansion involved enlarging a second site at Craig Hall in Irlam which the school used as a ‘temporary annex’ for around three years.Twinfix were approached by MTX Contracts the Principal Contractor on the project to design, manufacture and install a canopy at the site, between the building and existing canopy.A major challenge that Twinfix’s design team needed to over-come was a Build-Over-Agreement issued to the school by the Water Board, which required 24/7 access to the drains beyond the proposed site for the canopy.The team rose to the challenge and designed this mobile canopy, a first of its kind for Twinfix. This impressive free standing curved canopy, spanning a total of sixty square metres comprises of a sliding section with a run length of three metres and a static section with a run length of 17.5 metres.The aluminium structure is powder-coated to RAL 5003, Sapphire Blue. The half barrel vault roof design was constructed using Twinfix’s bespoke roof glazing systems glazed with 10mm clear polycarbonate. The non-fragile system achieves a Class B designation in accordance with the HSE’s ACR[m]001:2019 drop test.The main challenge was to create a frame that was strong enough to retain its shape when moved but light enough for a single person to open and close the retractable section. This was achieved through material choices, such as the polycarbonate vertical glazing instead of glass to keep the weight to a minimum. The expert team also designed a bespoke track and wheel system which allowed the whole frame to glide open and close very easily, once closed it was locked in position to the adjacent fixed frames which retain it in place during high winds.Director at Twinfix, Dan Smith commented: ‘From initial concept we felt like this product would fit in well with our current product range, so had confidence it was something we could develop for the client. The finished design looks really well and is extremely easy to use, this is a credit to our internal design and fabrication teams that worked together to achieve our goal’Matt Lawrenson, Deputy Head at Springwood commented on their new canopy: ‘Over the Summer of 2021, we had a Sheltered Walkway constructed and installed by Twinfix at our SEND provision, where we have children with a range of complex additional needs aged 2-7 years old. Our sheltered walkway allows us to move pupils between our existing school building and the new extension we have had built. As well as ensuring safe passage for children and staff, the quality and dimensions of the structure will provide an ideal additional learning space for our pupils, lending itself to a whole host of possibilities. It is light, spacious, and aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, the walkway satisfies an extremely specific and demanding design brief, with a retractable section which will allow utilities services access to a rising main in the event that this should be needed, without compromising its appearance or necessary sturdiness. The German Embassy is a prestigious property combining the main colonial-style Embassy building & a semi-detached house. Both designed in the 1960s by prominent German architect Egon Eiermann. The Embassy suffered from asbestos contamination. As a result, the German Embassy had to be completely renovated in order to meet modern-day health & safety standards – a challenging task for the architects having to balance the rigorous constraints of US building regulations with the need to respect & adapt Eiermann’s original design. The team of architects have chosen to use Accoya windows as part of the overall renovation project.

The Wave is a new inland-surfing lake, powered by 100% renewable electricity that provides the opportunity to surf all year round regardless of weather conditions or tides. The site’s entrance and car park suffered from boggy ground conditions following spells of wet weather and with approximately 2,750m2 of impermeable surfacing, there was limited potential for infiltration. The shuttle bus route between the main facilities and the car park is now surfaced with Truckcell 80 Permeable Paving blocks, filled with free draining angular gravel to allow rainwater to percolate down to the existing sub-soil.

Integrating over two thousand employees from across Dublin into one location, Microsofts new offices take on a human-centric form. Covering 33,000 sq m of floor space the new development connects employees from over seventy two different nationalities. Using both Aluprof MB-SR50N capped curtain wall and MB-SR50N EFEKT capless curtain wall systems the project achieves the architectural performance and aesthetics desired. Installed by WD Group for main contractors RG Carter, the curtain walling was an integral part of architects Stride Treglown’s vision for the landmark structure, which also features a flying roof. It features AluK’s SL52 flexible capped curtain walling system throughout, with an entrance door fabricated using the suited GT55TB door system. The diagonal design and irregular angles meant that AluK had to create a solution with multiple transom and mullion sections which was cost effective, while still being true to the aesthetic and meeting the static considerations and performance requirements laid out.

Greenford Quay is one of the UK’s largest ‘Build to Rent’ schemes with 1,965 new homes being built across seven main buildings. The aim of the development is to create a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood at the side of the historic Grand Union canal. More than 1400m2 of GeoCeramica® has been installed across the communal areas of the £151 million Greenford Quay development, with 150m2 used to provide a highly aesthetic finish to the communal roof terrace on the tallest tower in the scheme. The current Google HQ, with vast external floor space over several levels. The decking is a bespoke solid section 230 x 30mm composite, commissioned for this site. All fixings are hidden, giving a seamless look to the terraces, and clean lines. The main terrace areas are level and by using the DPH slope correction system, the wheelchair access ramps were easily achieved. A clever feature; the BM Unit travels over the decking, hiding the steel rails below. This enlarges the overall usable terrace space considerably, and gives uninterrupted views from the entire terrace.

The Tullamore Court Hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Ireland’s picturesque countryside. The 4* accommodation offers its patrons leisure facilities, rooms, a 20-metre swimming pool, a bistro, a bar and a restaurant, which was in desperate need of renovation. The hotel’s main restaurant hadn’t been updated since the late 90s, so interior design practice Helen Casey Design Associates (HCDA) was called upon to bring the space into the 21st Century. HCDA chose Gingham, a predefined colour and pattern combination from the Amtico Designers’ Choice Collection.

ADP Architecture’s landscape team specified Artform Urban’s High Performance Concrete (HPC) benches for a new plaza space outside the WMG building at the University of Warwick. WMG (formerly known as Warwick Manufacturing Group) is an academic department at the University.Artform Urban were contracted to supply and install these large units, each weighing up to 1500kg. Our technical involvement in the project simplified the supply and installation process for the main contractor including the experience we have of handling and installing heavy concrete units, saving time when the products arrived on site.

The 80 Charlotte Street buildings were designed by Make Architects. 80 Charlotte Street is the largest building at 323,000 sq ft. The two other buildings total 12,000 sq ft of retail areas and 45,000 sq ft of residential space. The development, which began in 2011, is set to be completed in 2019. Arup is the anchor tenant for the new development and will take approx. 41% of the main building for new office spaces. Effisus Pre-Fab Profiles was used to seal connections on the façade system assuring watertight and airtight façade connections.

Barbican House shows that you can take a structure with an old and tired facade, and bring it into the new millennium by adding a contemporary rainscreen, combining both modern and traditional materials.The FastClad brick slip element was manufactured using a mix of red/brown and grey Petersen bricks supplied by European Building Materials, delivered to site and installed by the main contractor.Working closely with Marek Wojciechowski Architects, the brick slip rainscreen integrates with the metal rainscreens and windows to create a stunning new facade to what is now a high end residential and commercial development

A Grade II listed Royal George building in Knutsford was sympathetically restored to create a stunning dining venue for the Loch Fyne brand. During the restoration project, contractor A&J Interiors specified 4 of Howe Green’s 5000 Series floor access covers. The covers were required to provide an unobtrusive access solution to cover the kitchen’s essential mains services whilst maintaining fast and easy access for maintenance or emergency repairs. Blending seamlessly with the flooring the covers avoid distortion and prevent the risk of slips and trips – essential within a busy kitchen environment.

Architect: Suzanne Brewer Architects This striking new-build home sits in the heart of the Blackheath conservation area in South East London. The two storey structure features a large set of Grand Slider II sliding doors at ground floor level that seamlessly connects the living space with its garden. Constructed on the site of a former mews, the pavilion-style property features an innovative design with a completely open plan living space on the ground floor of the main structure which features the 5-panel, 11m wide set of sliding doors on an OXXXO configuration.

After 20 years of being empty & unused, one of Wales’ most historic churches has been brought back into use as residential accommodation. The Grade II listed St John’s Church has been converted into 20 unique apartments. NHD05 and NHD17 have been specified and installed within the church. NHD17 with Dolphin Grey inserts have been used on all the main communal stair wells and feature a yellow insert on the top and bottom steps to help the visually impaired distinguish when a staircase ends and another begins.

The Morgan Stanley Building at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital benefitted from the high performance and durability qualities of leading paint manufacturer Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt paint. The building’s hallways, stairwells, staff rooms and main cafe was painted to provide the perfect solution for combating the high levels of traffic that a hospital has to contend with. The reception area, parent sitting room and play areas, were given a splash of colour in the form of bright blues and greens, while calming colours such as soft yellows and muted duck eggs were used in the quiet zones.

Delta’s Technical Team along with Delta Registered Installers Marsden Damp Services were approached by the main contractor Wilmott Dixon to give assistance on designing a robust waterproofing solution. Working in collaboration with the architects and project team, this team of waterproofing experts were easily able to offer a simplistic and practical approach.The project was split into 2 phases with Phase 1 waterproofing the existing stage and orchestra pit and Phase 2, the seating and ancillary rooms which all required the installation of a Type C waterproofing system to ensure a Grade 3 habitable environment was created.

DYNAMIK work with architects at specification stage right through to completion. Henlow Academy, in Bedfordshire was led by PCMS Design to build a new four-court sports hall. Main contractor, Borras Construction, chose DYNAMIK to install the specialist low profile sprung sports floor finished in a solid sport linoleum. The client wanted a Sports Hall for multi-sport use including netball, badminton, basketball, hockey and five-a-side football and to hire the facility for public use. Solid sport linoleum, available in a range of colours, was chosen for this purpose as it is easy to clean and maintain.

Specifying and installing 650m2 of Gerflor’s world class Taraflex® Performance vinyl sports flooring in ‘Light Cherry’ would turn out to be a pivotal decision for Axminster Leisure Centre in East Devon. The refurbishment project to replace the existing flooring in their main sports hall would yield spectacular results for both the operators of the facility and the end users. The indoor sports surface solution that was specified would need to be of the utmost quality and readily available, considering how short the timescales were for the project and would need to be competitively priced for the funds available for this iconic renovation.
