Living cladding at McArthurGlen Paris-Giverny Designer Outlet

Biotecture Limited

After successfully completing living walls at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet in Ashford, we were approached to design and implement a similar scheme for McArthurGlen’s newest outlet on the outskirts of Paris. This development exemplifies McArthurGlen’s commitment to sustainability. The scheme was built according to ‘Excellent’ High Environmental Quality (HQE) standards and includes 20,000 square metres of green roofs, 1,000 square metres of living walls and 120 electric parking spaces. The architect, Arte Charpentier wanted to create a ‘rich and welcoming experience’ for visitors and the living walls contribute to that vision. At the heart of the development lies a central ellipse, adorned with two gracefully curved stretches of Biotecture’s living cladding, each spanning an impressive 90 metres in length and standing at a height of 11 metres. Two more expansive sections of living wall frame the east entrance. The living walls are a visually striking architectural feature and help to cultivate a serene shopping environment. In addition to their aesthetic contributions, the plants will play a vital role in improving air quality and promoting biodiversity within the outlet.

Canal Side Cottages: Restoring History with Traditional Timber Windows & Doors

Gowercroft Joinery Limited

Discover the remarkable transformation of Draycott's Canal Side Cottages, a project that has breathed new life into six derelict 200-year-old cottages in Derbyshire. Led by the dedicated efforts of the Derbyshire and Sandiacre Canal Trust and local volunteers, this restoration project has not only created a stunning residential development but also a historical tourist attraction.Gowercroft products used:Chatsworth Sliding Sash WindowsMelbourne DoorsHardwick Casement WindowsRed GrandisOriginally built in the 1820s on the banks of the old Derby Canal, these cottages served as homes for mill workers and local families. However, by 1985, they had fallen into disrepair, on the verge of demolition. In 2017, the Derbyshire and Sandiacre Canal Trust stepped in to rescue the cottages as part of their ambitious plan to restore the disused canal and the surrounding area. With the vision of turning these cottages into a vibrant mixed-use complex, the Trust launched a £650k appeal. The goal was to create three 2-3 bedroom dwellings, a canal side café, commercial spaces for leisure companies, and a museum showcasing the canal's history and the lives of mill workers.ADDC Architects, renowned conservation experts, were entrusted with the task of designing the conversion. They skillfully worked around the intricate history of the original brick buildings, which had gone through multiple alterations and rebuilds in the 19th century. The architects aimed to preserve the unique character of the cottages while ensuring a functional layout suitable for their new purpose. The restoration process involved an incredible community effort, with local tradesmen, contractors, and volunteers coming together to bring the cottages back to life. The extensive work included clearing vegetation and debris, erecting scaffolding, reinforcing timbers, and salvaging original bricks and slates for rebuilding. One crucial aspect of the restoration was the installation of new timber windows. Gowercroft Joinery, a reputable local manufacturer with expertise in heritage and restoration projects, supplied the traditional Chatsworth sliding sash windows for the canal-facing elevations. These windows perfectly matched the original designs, featuring slim finger-jointed frames and Georgian styled glazing bars. At the rear, Hardwick casement windows were installed to maintain a utilitarian look consistent with the building's history.Crafted from solid Red Grandis hardwood, the windows offered both elegance and energy efficiency. The bespoke curved top casements faithfully reinstated, and Melbourne hardwood doors further enhanced the joinery and timber craftsmanship throughout the cottages. The restored Canal Cottages now stand as a symbol of the Trust's broader vision to revive the 13-mile canal and its surrounding areas. Once completed, the canal restoration will create a 25-mile cruising ring, connecting to thousands of miles of navigable waterways across the UK. It will provide opportunities for outdoor activities, such as angling, canoeing, and cycling while promoting wildlife conservation and improving the well-being of local residents.By being a part of this project, Gowercroft Joinery has not only contributed to the architectural heritage but also supported the revival of the Derby Canal, acting as a catalyst for regeneration in the city centre. The Canal Side Cottages showcase the perfect synergy between traditional craftsmanship and modern performance, ensuring years of comfort and enjoyment for all those who experience them.

Warehouse conversion using Clement W40 steel windows and Jansen steel doors

Clement Windows Group

Clement have replaced hundreds of industrial style steel windows at the newly restored Maple Building in Kentish Town, North West London. Dating back to the 1890s, the building has an interesting history. It was originally home to Maple & Co, furniture makers for the royal family. Then in the First World War sections of the factory were secretly modified to produce fighter plane components, canvas tents and other supplies for front line troops. More recently the building was used for office space until developers The Linton Group acquired it, turning an old converted warehouse into five floors of luxury apartments and penthouses.Interior architects, Gordon-Duff & Linton insisted upon a high specification throughout, focusing on strong acoustic and design performance. Clement W40 steel windows and Jansen double doors were the perfect choice, complementing the cosy, well-lit interiors that are a feature of the building, as well as offering superb quality and an impeccable match to the original fenestration.“The Maple Building is our flagship development. It has bags of industrial charm and period character due to its many original features. The steel windows by Clement respect and enhance these while simultaneously complementing the high specification modern interior design of the project.” said Gemma Gordon-Duff, Managing Director at Gordon-Duff & Linton.

SUNSHIELD Unique Louvres

We recently completed a noteworthy project, supplying custom-designed sliding louvre doors for a delighted customer in Goring-On-Thames. Nestled alongside the picturesque River Thames in South Oxfordshire, Goring is known for its charming village and serene surroundings. The star of this project is a stunning detached house that now boasts the distinctive touch of Sunshield's sliding louvre doors. These panels, meticulously crafted to perfection, cover an expansive area, each measuring just over 5 square meters. While two of these panels gracefully glide along rails spanning 4.8 meters, the third panel commands an impressive 10-meter rail. One of the key highlights of this installation is the meticulous attention to detail. To ensure a flawless and seamless appearance, the rails were seamlessly integrated into the floor and ceiling during the house's construction phase. This thoughtful approach not only enhances the aesthetics but also guarantees a smooth operation that aligns seamlessly with the house's architectural integrity. The sliding frames of these louvre doors are made with Western Red Cedar louvres, positioned at a precise 25-degree angle. This angle not only offers a visually appealing touch but also allows for captivating views through the panels. While the wooden louvers remain fixed, the sliding panels effortlessly glide from left to right and back again, all operated manually for ease and convenience. In terms of aesthetics, these sliding louvre doors are coated in RAL 7016 anthracite grey, lending a modern and sophisticated touch to the house's façade. However, these panels are not just about looks; they serve a trifecta of functions. First and foremost, they provide effective protection against both wind and sun, ensuring that the residents can enjoy their outdoor spaces in comfort, regardless of the weather. Secondly, they contribute significantly to the house's overall aesthetic appeal, blending seamlessly with the owner's vision and elevating the property's curb appeal. This project stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering not just louvre doors, but transformative solutions that enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and comfort of outdoor spaces. Galion Ltd

H+H UK Ltd

When regional housebuilder, Galion Ltd was looking for a way to speed up the construction process without compromising on using traditional masonry materials for its Jarmany Hill site, it turned to H+H’s Celcon Vertical Wall Panels.Celcon Vertical Wall Panels are storey-high panels of aircrete that are craned into place for a fast build with the reassuring characteristics of a high-performance, durable, masonry structure.Galion Ltd is building five large, detached houses with uninterrupted views over the Somerset countryside towards Glastonbury Tor. With a reputation for building individual properties to a high specification, the quality of the build is a strong focus for the company.Tim Barnes, Managing Director of Galion Ltd explains why H+H Vertical Wall Panels were chosen for the site: “One of the unique features of our houses is that we use local, natural stone walling for the external envelope of the properties. These are slow to build, especially when we’re using a traditional masonry build method as we are restricted to a maximum of six courses before laying the masonry to the same height.“With the traditional method it was taking 8 to 12 weeks to get to the point where we could put the roof on a house. The joy of using H+H Vertical Wall Panels is that we can get the roof on in around 8 days – it’s a huge advantage for us.”Constructing the watertight external shell of a house so quickly allows the internal trades to start work much earlier, reducing the build schedule significantly. When building large homes like the 2,800 square foot houses on the Jarmany Hill site, this time saving is particularly pertinent.Galion Ltd is working with Acorn Innovation Build Ltd whose carpenters were trained by H+H to install the Vertical Wall Panels. It was a fairly straightforward transition for them as they already use a crane to install timber floor cassettes and roof joists.Matt Shuttleworth, Director, Acorn Innovation Build commented: “H+H Celcon Vertical Wall Panels is a new system for us but as a company we are always interested in different methods of construction. I have to say, so far we are very impressed with this one.”Tim Barnes is equally impressed, saying: “I’m struggling to see a downside to the system. Everyone who has seen it has been impressed and I think once other companies see contractors building with it they’ll wonder why they’re not using it too. We’re already planning to use the system at another site that will be breaking ground soon.”
