Project:Surespan were approached to develop and supply a series of 4 hour fire rated flush floor access covers for the Midfield Concourse expansion project at Hong Kong International Airport. The HK$10 Billion dollar project was completed in 2015 following extensive design and planning processes utilising BIM modelling. The covers were specially adapted with a 200mm upstand and enhanced fire-rated materials to achieve the 4-hour rating. SubFloor raised steel flooring was used to renovate, raise and level a 285 m² listed museum floor into a modern meeting space in Ellesmere Port, Liverpool.This simple and elegant solution raised an uneven stone floor up to 300 mm to allow for installations and insulation. The joist and screw system allows for quick and easy assembly so that the floor can reach the desired height. Up to 186 floors of the world’s tallest building were levelled with ARDEX products – the largest volume of levelling and smoothing compound used on one project in the company’s history.

The flooring requirement at this museum in Leicester stipulated a safe and cleanable seamless finish to exhibit the discovery of Richard III's remains and the story behind the Battle of Bosworth. A simple black finish was specified in keeping with the design of this facility. The exhibition takes visitors through the history of the Wars of The Roses and then fast forwards 500 years to a Leicester car park where a discovery was made. Resuflor self smoother was installed at 3mm thickness across the floors and this was sealed Resupen WB Satin Black to give the desired sheen finish.

Stratum helped create a healthy and fresh environment in the specialist research laboratories based at the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital. The space would be heavily used and the nature of the work in the labs required the floor to be hygienic, seamless, easy to clean and with high resistance to chemicals. The design of the building allows the public to see through the windows into the laboratories from street level, meaning aesthetics were equally as important in product selection as functional properties. Stratum installed 800m2 of Pure Design – Bolidtop 525 with integrated skirting throughout. Solution-      Joint free makes for a very hygienic solution, with integrated joint free skirting adding to this.-      Close co-ordination with the contractor, enabled the structure to be sufficiently progressed early in the programme. This allowed the resin to be installed early and fully protected in ample time for the lab benches to be installed over.-      Electrical Floor Bokes, seamless skirting.Result-      The resin flooring installed here is an excellent addition to this multi-award winning building.  “The Bolidt resin provides the perfect seamless floor finish in the main laboratory spaces within the Zayed Centre for Research. Opened in September 2022, the UCL East Campus in Stratford, London, includes apartments for over 500 students, cafes, a shop, a cinema and public art installations.This means that the campus can expect thousands of students and visitors to walk through their entrances each day, so the installation of an effective entrance flooring system was essential. Launched in the summer of 2022, Nuway Grid Black Anodised offers a stylish but contemporary alternative to Nuway Tuftiguard Black Anodised. Offering a modern aesthetic along with a 7-year warranty (as it was installed by Master Matting, a FESSI Contractor), Nuway Grid Black Anodised is the perfect product for this Campus as it can withstand heavy foot and wheeled traffic and help to reduce slips, trips and falls within the building by removing brought in dirt and moistures.  

When adhesive-free flooring was specified for this HQ office refit, the contractor needed an installation method that was compatible with carpet from Desso, LVT from Tarkett and woven vinyl tiles from Bolon. IOBAC Magtabs MT4+ were the ideal solution for installation onto raised metal access flooring.

The current Google HQ, with vast external floor space over several levels. The decking is a bespoke solid section 230 x 30mm composite, commissioned for this site. All fixings are hidden, giving a seamless look to the terraces, and clean lines. The main terrace areas are level and by using the DPH slope correction system, the wheelchair access ramps were easily achieved. A clever feature; the BM Unit travels over the decking, hiding the steel rails below. This enlarges the overall usable terrace space considerably, and gives uninterrupted views from the entire terrace.

It’s not everyday you get a phone call from an architect asking for help on a grade 2 listed mill building, but that is what happened to us back in April 2017 when Stephenson Studios contacted us with a problem they were having with floor to ceiling heights on their Brownsfield Mill project in Manchester.Their design criteria was for the existing 75mm thick timber mill boards to be retained and each of the apartments in the building would have these as an exposed ceiling. The idea was to keep the building as rustic and to retain as much of the original look and feel of the listed mill building as possible. Because of this all of the acoustic (Part E.) and fire Building Regs. (Part B.) requirements would have to be installed above the existing floor.The drawings we were sent through identified a floor build up, on top of the mill boards, at nearly 300mm thick. This started with a self levelling compound on top of the mill boards, to level them to, and then a timber on timber solution with a final layer of cement particle board prior to the oak flooring being installed.This thick floor section was causing a problem due to the original oak beams that were in place meaning the floor to ceiling heights weren’t as high as they needed to be. This design was compounded flowing the removal of the bitumen floor covering. When the mill boards were exposed and then levels were taken across each of the floors it was clear that the original design was no longer suitable for the project.With the age of the building some of the mill boards were beyond repair and each of the floors needed levelling up so the use of self levelling compound and a timber/ cement board solution also became a very expensive solution. We were asked if we could come up with a solution that was able to reduce costs and time and also to be able to achieve the required acoustic and fire requirements for this type of conversion project.Our initial thoughts on the project was to use timber ferrings, 100mm wide at 600mm centres, to lay our Lewis Deck system onto. This was reducing the number of ferrings by 50% (these were originally at 400mm centres) and it also removed 4 layers of timber/ cement board as well as the self levelling compound from the project. Following a meeting on site however, and after being able to fully talk to the design team and developer about what the Lewis Deck system can do we agreed that we would look at putting the ferring strips at 1400mm centres with the Lewis Deck being laid across at these centres. Rubber granulate acoustic strips would be installed on top of each of the timbers and mineral wool insulation would then be installed between. This would allow more material to be removed from the project but crucially still hit both the acoustic and fire requirements of the project.A test floor was commissioned, by the acoustic engineer, and built in August 2018 which passed all tests. You can see from the photos below the Lewis Deck laid at 1400mm centres for the middle section of the test with the 15mm thick rubber granulate acoustic strip laid on top of the timber ferrings. These timbers, due to the nature of the mill boards below, had to be installed individually to differing heights.The first full delivery of Lewis Deck arrived on site at the beginning of June 2019 following on from the steel strengthening works that were being carried out on site.The deck was quickly installed across the whole first floor in just a couple of days and the first screed pour was scheduled for the following week. The whole floor was poured using an anhydrite screed in just a few hours.The project continued on and the last main section of floor was poured on 19th December 2019, exactly 6 months after the first of the pours.This grade 2 listed mill building was a great project to work on. One that gave us a lot of challenges to overcome from the outset and one that helped overcome a number of issues that kept dropping up as the remedial works on the building progressed. The ProjectProject Triathlon was conceived as a new build warehouse development at DP World London Gateway. It was designed specifically for use by DHL Supply Chain, the world’s leading contract logistics provider. This brand-new structure would have an internal volume equivalent to 645 Olympic-size swimming pools.Shire Flooring Ltd was employed as the flooring contractor for this huge project. As the new warehouse involved areas which would be used for differing purposes, a range of floorings would be necessary throughout the facility. This meant that a range of flooring accessories would also be needed, to complement the different floorcoverings.The ApproachShire Flooring spoke to Quantum Flooring about supplying the accessories for the project. They would need cove formers and capping strips, to be fitted with resilient floorcoverings. Two types of stair nosings would also be necessary; one to be fitted onto wooden steps, and one to be used on carpeted staircases.Quantum’s QCF35 cove former would be used to curve the vinyl at the floor-to-wall junctions, protecting the floorcovering from damage at the join and making it easier to clean. UCS1 flexible capping strips were selected in both black and white for a mix of colour designs in different parts of the building. These would create a neat finish to the floorcovering up the wall.On the carpeted staircases, Quantum’s ZHF1 stair nosings were chosen. These heavy-duty profiles were fitted with mist coloured tread material, to contrast with the black carpet. For the wooden flooring, ZF125R stair nosings were used. These profiles have a ramped back, so they can be fitted straight onto wood or concrete steps without creating a slip hazard. Black inserts were used to contrast with the natural wood colouring.The stair nosings were fitted using Q-Fix, Quantum’s contact adhesive. Q-Fix is a single solution to fix Quantum stair nosings, with no need for screws or plugs. With a strong and durable bond, there is no more reliable stair nosing adhesive on the market.The OutcomeShire Flooring completed their work on Project Triathlon in 2022. By the end of the project, they had fitted an immense 3000sqm of flooring. They had also fitted 400m of Quantum stair nosings, and 200m of Quantum capping strips and cove formers.Quantum’s UCS1 capping strips in both white and black look great in the warehouse, with the QCF35 cove former assisting in protecting the integrity of the floorcovering where it meets the wall.Meanwhile, the ZHF1 and ZF125R stair nosings look fantastic on their respective staircases. With Quantum’s slip resistant tread material, they are helping to prevent slips, trips, and falls for the many workers at the facility.Shire Flooring did excellent work with Quantum Flooring products in this extensive project. DHL Supply Chain can be happy with a great design scheme, along with products that will keep its workers safe going into the future. 

Each floor posed a different challenge during the refurbishment of this 1960s building. Some substrates contained bitumen, or old adhesive residues, whilst others had uneven and damaged concrete with rising damp. ARTIDEX NA was the only choice, as it covers all subfloors without the need to prime, and ARDEX DPM 1 C provided the ultimate moisture control solution.

The fire station and training centre at Edinburgh Airport worked with Flowcrete UK to identify and install a floor finish that would be able to cope with the difficult on-site conditions. A new floor was required as the previous quarry tile surface was incorrectly laid to a fall, this caused water to run in the wrong direction - ending up at the back of the building as well as ponding between the bays.

The ProjectsThe Northern Health and Social Care Trust and The Southern Health and Social Care Trust are two of the largest healthcare associations in Northern Ireland. Between them, they provide services to over 850,000 people. Among the facilities under the Northern Trust’s control is Causeway Hospital in Coleraine. The Southern Trust has Craigavon Area Hospital as one of its major healthcare sites.H&J Martin was established in 1840. For well over a century and a half it has been delivering the highest level of quality work in every aspect of construction and fit outs. For this reason, the company was chosen to oversee and facilitate the work on these prestigious hospitals.The hospitals needed new flooring to be installed throughout the buildings. The floorcovering would need to be made from a resilient material such as vinyl, making it easy to maintain high standards of hygiene using industrial cleaning machinery. The flooring would also need to be supported at the floor-to-wall junctions and around corners, to prevent flooring failure or collapse and to protect against the heavy-duty cleaning equipment.The ApproachH&J Martin decided to use Quantum Flooring’s CCFM1 internal and CCFM2 external floormitres to help protect the flooring around corners in the hospitals. Vinyl or other resilient floorcoverings can be particularly vulnerable where the flooring meets the wall at corners, as it can be difficult to mitre the angles correctly. These floormitres help to create a uniform finish every time, leading to greater structural integrity along with improved aesthetic results.Quantum’s QCF35 cove former was utilised to complement the CCFM1 and CCFM2. This profile fits perfectly with the curve of the floormitres, helping to create a flush and hygienic finish every time, at each floor-to-wall junction and around corners. The coving and the floormitres protect the floorcovering from damage at the join, and make the flooring easier to clean. For wet rooms, the vinyl can be fitted all the way up the wall where the floormitres can also be used in the wall-to-roof corners.The UCS3 slimline flexible capping strip was used to create neat finishes to the floorcovering up the walls of the hospitals. The UCS3 profile is specifically designed for healthcare environments. It has a slimline cap, reducing the accumulation of dirt and dust over time, and providing a smaller surface area to be cleaned than traditional capping strips. UCS3 is available in 25 metre coils making the packaging compact and the product easy to fit.The OutcomesCauseway Hospital and Craigavon Area Hospital were fitted with over 2,000 metres of floormitres, cove formers, and capping strips between July 2022 and July 2023. Sean O’Reilly, the Flooring Supervisor for H&J Martin, says: “As you can see from the finish, high quality work was made easier with floormitres.”The profiles used have been expertly fitted by H&J Martin employees, resulting in great looking and hygienic installations for both hospitals. The ProjectAmazon is one of the largest companies in the world, with over 1.6 million employees. It operates 185 distribution warehouses, or fulfilment centres, around North America and Europe. From these centres, Amazon staff pack and distribute products for its 200 million worldwide customers.A new Amazon fulfilment centre was opening in Knowsley, Liverpool. As part of the project, around 80m² of matting would need to be fitted in the entrance to the building. The matting needed to be hard wearing, and highly effective at removing dirt and debris from feet and wheels to handle the traffic of the many workers at the centre.The ApproachB & F Flooring was the flooring contractor appointed to the project. They contacted Quantum Flooring to discuss which entrance matting would be best suited for the Amazon fulfilment centre. It was decided that The Belgravia Matting System with black textile inserts would be ideal for the job.The Belgravia is a durable entrance matting which is suitable for both foot and trolley traffic. It is fitted with tufted nylon, which is fixed inside deep profile aluminium scraper treads. This maximises the dirt and debris which is removed from foot and wheeled traffic. The detritus is then captured by the closed construction of the matting system, making it simple to clean.Quantum’s Supply and Fit service was used to install The Belgravia. This meant that Quantum technicians measured the entrance area, and had the matting cut to the exact size to fit the 80m² of matwells. They then fitted the entrance matting, ensuring that The Belgravia sat neatly within the recesses.The OutcomeThe Belgravia Entrance Matting System looks fantastic in the Knowsley Fulfilment Centre. Because the matting area is very wide, the mats had to be fitted in a few pieces, with separate matwells for each part. Quantum’s technicians did this in such a way that it looks like one continuous system.This matting system helps to keep dirt and moisture from entering the building. The Belgravia protects the flooring beyond the matting itself, preventing it from becoming scuffed and worn before its time. It also helps to keep the Amazon workers safe, minimising the chance of slips and falls due to mud or rain which could otherwise be tracked into the warehouse.As The Belgravia is so hard wearing and easy to clean, it will be functioning at the Amazon fulfilment centre for many years to come. In fact, a 10-year guarantee is available with this entrance matting, for the peace of mind of both B & F Flooring and Amazon themselves.

“ARDEX teamed up with one of East Anglia’s most established specialist flooring contractors to provide a 2,500m2 fast track refurbishment to the main reception, corridors and refectory. It was essential that the college remained operational throughout the refurbishment, and that the project was completed as quickly as possible.

F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s rapid-setting, ultra-smooth floor finishing compound has delivered a fast-track solution for refurbishing the iconic Nelson Staircase at Somerset House, London.As part of ongoing maintenance and improvement works, flooring contractor Carpet Culture was commissioned to restore the steps and one of the main landings of the historic Beaux-Arts staircase, which spans six floors and dates back to the late 18th century, when the Royal Navy occupied the building.Contractors began by removing old floorcoverings and adhesive residues from the steps and the 40m2 landing.The landing was destroyed by a bomb in the Second World War and subsequently restored with concrete, meaning that it would require raising in order for floorcoverings to meet the level of the original stone border, but less than the minimum application thickness of a smoothing compound. Additionally, work required completing over two nights, between the hours of 6-11pm, while the building was unoccupied, meaning there was not time to mechanically prepare the concrete area.Contractors, therefore, applied two coats of Stopgap Micro Rapid floor finishing compound to create a perfectly smooth surface for the receipt of floorcoverings.Stone effect LVTs were then installed on the landing and risers and treads of the stairs, and Stycco Flex rapid-curing, flexible tube adhesive was used to affix Gradus stair nosings. The high strength build-up and fast curing time of the adhesive means it can secure stair nosings and trims in as little as 60 minutes, without the need for mechanical fixings.Tom McCullough, senior flooring manager at Carpet Culture, said: “We were grateful to our F. Ball technical representative for suggesting using Stopgap Micro Rapid as an alternative to applying a smoothing compound so that we could complete the work out of hours, on time. It worked a treat, and we received compliments for how it looked even before the floorcoverings went down.”

Furthermore, the centre-hung Samsung screen is the world’s first halo video board that is roughly 70,000 square-foot, dual-sided and is considered the most LEDs ever used in a sports and entertainment venue.The SoFi Stadium will be hosting several global events from the Super Bowl LVI 2022, 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics opening and closing ceremonies.The Product:Surespan designed and manufactured four access products.  Two electrically operated, double leaf, flush floor hinged access covers to suit an overall frame size of 4267 x 1768mm.  Two electrically operated, double-leaf ceiling access panels to suit an overall frame size of 4267 x 1768mm. The lids have been designed to open downwards.

Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro is the biggest hospital in Cornwall. The corridor needed updating quickly and required a durable solution to withstand high footfall and wheeled traffic in the area. Altro Cantata adhesive-free flooring was combined with Altro Fortis Titanium wall protection.

The careful renovation of the Grade II Listed building’s iconic dome, reconditioned into a restaurant, was paramount. The expertise of Flowcrete UK was called upon to find flooring solutions for this area that would merge Spanish City’s early twentieth century heritage with modern building technology.

Our task was to supply and install 118,254 sq. m. of our PSA MOB PF2 PS/SPU Medium Grade RMG600 for the main areas of the building. By installing over 340,000 panels, our solution accounted for just 6.1% of the building's total carbon.

Our Allura Flex luxury vinyl tiles have been used to great effect in the new offices of Becherovka in the Centrum Stomovka shopping mall in Prauge. Becherovka is part of the Pernod Ricard group, one of the largest producers of spirits and wine in the world. CAPEXUS was given the task of creating an office with a more distinctive and prestigious appearance, one that would be comfortable, feature interesting materials and, last but not least, be practical. The unifying element of the new offices is a more industrial concept. Not to be overlooked is the open ceiling with its visible concrete beams and ducts. The exposed materials in combination with the wooden furnishings and Forbo’s Allura Wood and Material luxury vinyl tiles create a pleasant atmosphere for work, business meetings in the conference rooms and relaxation.

AstraZeneca, an innovative bio-pharmaceutical company, set out to expand their Warsaw office. In addition to creating jobs for another 500 people, the investor wanted to create the real heart of the office - a space different to the existing office, the true Astrazeneca community centre. In addition to Agora, many conference rooms have been designed throughout the office, focus rooms, design work zones and other corners adapted to different types of work. A range of Forbo products were installed in the Astra Zeneca office which was designed by The Massive Design Studio.

The proprietors of this domestic property in Harrogate added a large extension with a total roof area of 150m2. The client wanted the new roof sections to complement the slate work and aesthetics of the original building whilst adding a contemporary and stylish look to the extension.Originally considering a zinc sheeted roofing system, the client explored alternative materials that could achieve the same visual impact but at lower cost. After discussions with Cure Roofing Ltd, a Polyroof simulated metal finish was proposed as a roofing solution that would meet all the client’s requirements.Not only do Polyroof’s range of liquids offer cost savings over traditional metals, but they are also lighter in weight, totally seamless and can be pigmented to any RAL colour. Having no scrap value, the client also had the added peace of mind that the roof would not be a target for theft.A timber warm roof was constructed which incorporated 120mm PIR insulation to achieve a U-Value of 0.18 W/m2K in compliance with building regulations. An OSB3 TG4 deck was fitted above the insulation and Polyroof pre-formed GRP standing seam trims were fixed at 600mm centres into the deck. Next, the first coat of the Protec waterproofing system was applied over the whole roof area and encapsulating the standing seam trims. The roof was finished with a second coat of Protec pigmented to RAL 7016 providing an anthracite grey colour to the whole roof, accurately simulating the appearance of zinc roof sheets.The workmanship by Polyroof approved contractor Cure Roofing was second to none and the quality of the finish left the client delighted with their new roof. As part of the multi-million-pound restoration of Grade I listed Manchester Town Hall, window restoration specialist Shepley Engineers is restoring, refurbishing, repairing and replacing hundreds of historic leaded and metal casement windows throughout the site using Hodgson Sealants Metal Casement Putty and Leaded Lite Cement. Each piece of glass from the iron-framed leaded lite windows from the state rooms has been removed, cleaned, repaired – or replaced by new fabrications if necessary – and reinstated using Hodgson’s Leaded Lite Cement in Shepley’s on-site restoration studio. The metal casement windows on the lower floors have been removed to Sheffield for restoration using Hodgson’s Metal Casement Putty, a high quality, hand-applied glazing compound that is formulated or bedding and external fronting of single glass into primed steel, timber frames, sealed hardwood and concrete. It is designed to be overpainted as in this project.
