Office Acoustic Panels Fix Reverberation

Office Acoustic Panels Fix Reverberation

iKoustic

Office acoustic panels are the best way to fix reverberation in spaces where sound becomes noise. A lot of modern offices end up in need of acoustic panels as contemporary designs use hard surfaces, vaulted ceilings and plenty of glass. While this creates bright office spaces, they are often noisy and difficult to focus in.We partnered up with Yorkshire Soundproofing to go and treat a local office in York that was suffering from terrible reverberation issues.Acoustic problems in the officeAcoustic problems in Monitor’s offices meant people were unable to focus, take a phone call or speak with colleagues easily. These office spaces were newly decorated and refurbed, but sound hadn’t been considered in the office designs. Ultimately, the glass partition, high ceilings, hard floor and in-room kitchenette meant the space wasn’t user-friendly. Luckily, management at the company took sound seriously and decided to get the problem resolved with proper sound absorption. They chose the grey Still Note panels which come in different sizes and suited their aesthetics. They are also a superb retrospective sound design choice as they can be added to ceilings or walls and configured to fit the current space. Why acoustic panels are good in office spacesAcoustic panels are a good fit for office spaces because they can be hung from the ceiling out of the way. In this example, the office still felt light and open after the installation was finished. Acoustic panels can also be adhered directly to the walls. This was done in a smaller side office where two desks were close to a wall which increased reverberation. The acoustic panels are lightweight, which means no additional structural changes need to be made before installation. Our Still Note panels were hung from wire fixings which are adjustable to fit any ceiling height. It is best to allow a gap between the panel and the ceiling, if possible, as absorption is increased. You can see in this example that a 25cm gap was left to improve the performance of the acoustic panels. How were the panels installed? The panels were installed with a fixing and wire system which was simply screwed into the ceiling. Each acoustic panel is hung from multiple pigtail screws that are twisted into the material. This makes the panels easy to install and take down for light maintenance. It is best to spread acoustic panels around an office so that the absorption is evenly distributed. In this case study you can see that the panels go from one end to the other. We generally advise covering around 1/3 of hard surfaces, but this depends on your space and sound issues. For this example, the ceiling treatment alone was sufficient for good sound attenuation.Did the acoustic panels work?Yes, the acoustic panels worked and reduced reverberation in the office. The video above has a before and after audio example, so you can hear how acoustic panels work for yourself. Before installation, the room was too noisy and speech could be hard to focus on. After the installation, sound was controlled and it was easy to talk while other activities carried on.This has made a huge difference to the office and made it far better to work in. Now the office space has been successfully treated, they are installing acoustic baffles in their meeting room. This will make in-person meetings and video calls far easier and more professional.

Heritage colours and kerb-side appeal were among the factors that persuaded local planning authorities that Modus PVC-U windows were the appropriate alternative to timber on a prime, exposed location near the UNESCO World Heritage Site.Consisting of 136 upmarket homes selling at up to £1 million apiece, the Ensleigh Estate was being developed by Bloor Homes, along with another major housebuilder, on a former MoD site dating from WW2 that overlooks the Georgian city and is near to its race and golf course. The planners originally wanted timber windows but that didn't work for the developer who wanted matching fascias and soffits. As the site is exposed at the top of a steep hill they wouldn’t look great for very long.

INSTANTA GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND TO MEET LONDON NHS TRUST’S REQUIREMENTS - SUREFLOW TOUCH WALL MOUNTED

Zip Water

Demonstrating flexibility and meeting requirements where other manufacturers weren’t able to has seen Instanta products specified at a hospital within the London NHS Trust.Inevitably, patient access to hot water needs careful consideration to ensure any risk of scalding is minimal. A decision was made to ensure water boilers within patient areas have a maximum dispensing temperature of 76°C - lower than the majority of standard water boilers. Not having used Instanta before, but needing a change from the existing supplier that couldn’t offer an adjustable temperature, the technical supervisor researched alternatives and was impressed with Instanta’s wide product range. “On reviewing our existing water boilers, we decided that we needed a product that could actually be modified so its maximum temperature is set at 76°C, an important safety measure for users,” commented the technical supervisor. “We were impressed with Instanta’s range. One of their wall-mounted products was just what we were after, however, its temperature was only adjustable to 80°C.The hospital’s enquiry led to further discussions with Instanta’s operations director and a feasibility study determined that it was indeed possible to modify an existing product; a 6 litre SureFlow Touch Wall Mounted Boiler (WMS6PB) to achieve the facility’s maximum temperature requirement of 76°C.“Instanta’s willingness to help and meet our requirements has been brilliant,” continued the technical supervisor. “As per our request, they made sure the maximum dispensing temperature was set at 76°C. Over the past year we have monitored this closely and we’re pleased to report that it has remained at this temperature, which affords us invaluable peace of mind.” In total, 20 wall-mounted boilers were purchased and placed in areas where patients have access to water heaters.

School uses Time Wisely to Protect Interiors with Yeoman Shield

Yeoman Shield, trading name of Harrison Thompson & Co Ltd

Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School based in Kingstanding, just outside Birmingham, took advantage of a quieter time, with the majority of pupils home schooling, to undertake interior wall protection work with Yeoman Shield. Catering for 700 pupils aged 11- 16 the school has corridors and break-out areas throughout the school where walls and corners especially are exposed to marking and impact damage caused by the everyday movement of pupils, staff and equipment. The damage not only detracts from the smart image the school strives to up hold in all areas, but also becomes a strain on the maintenance budget with constant requirements of repair and redecoration. With the aim to reduce such damage and expenditure, after research and receiving samples, Head Teacher, Robert Swanwick, contacted Yeoman Shield to supply and carry out the installation of a complete wall protection system.Following strict Covid guidelines throughout the process, Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives installed Yeoman Shield FalmouthEx Wall Protection Panels, (after boarding-out some of the brickwork to provide an even finish), at 1250 mm high to corridor and dining areas in a Dusty Grey colour to complement artwork decoration applied to the upper walls.Staircase walls were also fitted with the wall protection panels with the addition of Yeoman Shield 50 mm Dia. Guardian Handrail in Timber with attractive Stainless Steel accessories.Vulnerable wall corners were protected with 75 x 75 mm corner protection in a matching colour and Yeoman Shield 110 mm White PVCu cover over a solid timber core skirting was added. This full Yeoman Shield wall protection system will abolish the future need for repainting walls and skirting with cleaning being the only maintenance required, reducing budgets spends. The rigid PVCu material that Yeoman Shield products are manufactured from are easy to clean, do not promote the growth of bacteria or mould and are not affected by the use of commercial cleaners, assisting in the up keep of high hygiene standards.Mr Swanwick commented “the quality of the product is exceptional. It has been installed for six months in some places and shows no signs of wear or tear yet. I also cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism of the installation teams, who understand the challenges of working in a school environment and get on with things quietly and efficiently. I am a very happy customer.”For more information on how installing wall & door protection products can help save on building maintenance and help keep interiors looking smart and clean get in contact on 0113 279 5854, info@yeomanshield.com or go to www.yeomanshield.com

In relation to the Sound Absorption we supplied and installed Soundis Absorb-R SofTone Panels (commonly known as acoustic fabric panels) These were installed on both the side walls along with the back wall of each auditorium providing full coverage of the walls enhancing the performance of the product improving the clarity of sounds emitted within the auditoriums. The second requirement within each of the auditoriums was to provide a solution to the Soundproofing which is where we provided a Soundis Cinesystem – Dry. This system allowed us to provide great acoustic & antivibration performance whilst ensuring the installation was quick to allow us to achieve the programme dates due to the system comprising of elastomeric isolator blocks overlaid with Dry Screed Panels. Bastion House stands out thanks to Lima bricks from Vandersanden

Vandersanden Brick

An imposing boutique scheme of nine luxury apartments in Hackney, London, Bastion House is a modern take on a castle-like structure with its multi-faceted walls, tiered form and variously sized openings. The choice of Vandersandan’s Lima facing brick enhances this robust look while the brick’s light colour contrasts with the black mortar joints and recessed jet-black window frames and balcony soffits. Bastion House is built on the site of a two-storey, post-war house on Farleigh Road in a predominantly residential area that includes a variety of architectural styles and a range of building heights. The new building is five storeys in total but its scale and massing are carefully considered, stepping back at both third and fourth floor levels in response to the surrounding built form, while also ensuring that the crown of a street tree, immediately to the west of the site, remains unaffected. Creative brickworkGoldrose Sharpe, the developers of Bastion House, embraced the challenge of carefully detailing the brickwork which, along with the building’s unconventional form, helps it stand out. Specially cut bricks were employed to achieve the different angled corners - most corners of the building are not at a right angle. Brick soffit panels were designed to surround the balcony openings along with brick-faced lintels to create depth to the set-back windows. Relief panels employing a different brickwork pattern were also introduced at various points across the facades. When selecting the bricks for the project, the team at Goldrose Sharpe ordered samples from various brick suppliers. “We were exploring our options with light coloured bricks,” explains Maria Patton, project lead at Goldrose Sharpe. “The Lima bricks have this artisanal, handmade texture which is quite unique; they stood out compared to other brick samples.” The Lima is a stock brick consisting of a mix of different clays with a white base colour, grey accents and a sanded-coated and grained structure.Goldrose Sharpe purchased the bricks directly from Vandersanden.“Vandersanden was always very helpful with its customer service and the team there was good at explaining the technicalities of the brick,” says Maria Patton. “We had to send the bricks to be specially cut and made for the special angles and brick-faced soffits and lintels. They worked well to these variations.”An impactful facadeThe Lima bricks and the impressive detailing ensure Bastion House makes a bold statement. “We often notice people who walk past the building touch the walls out of curiosity,” notes Maria Patton. “We’re very happy with the final result and the overall look of the brickwork. The use of the Lima bricks made a real difference to the building’s appearance.”To find out more about the bricks used in this project or to see the wide range of high-quality bricks available from Vandersanden, click on the 'View more' link

Commercial - Factory & Office Building - Sheerness, Kent

Smart Architectural Aluminium

Built in 1974, a 92,000 square foot abandoned factory in Sheerness had been in a state of steady decline for many years. With a lack of investment, the general condition of the façades looked tired and uncared for, panels and glazing were stained and dirty, leaving the building looking almost derelict. However in 2020, Olympic Glass, one of the UK's leading manufacturers and processors of safety glass and sealed units, acquired the factory and have subsequently spent more than £2m completely renovating and creating the iconic Queensborough building. To refurbish the dilapidated building, Olympic Glass appointed Glaze, one of Smart Architectural Aluminium’s key partners, and a leading manufacturer and installer of premium quality, bespoke, external and internal glazing systems.Over a period of two years, Glaze installed 430 square metres of curtain walling, completely transforming the building’s external facades through the use of the Smart Wall external framing and door systems, all finished in anthracite grey. The external works were all completed during Covid restrictions, with just one section of façade being replaced at a time until the whole envelope was complete. When aggregated together, the external façade of the building was replaced with the new Smart Wall system in around six weeks.Internally, the building has also been completely transformed. With the first floor now home to Olympic Glass’s manufacturing facility, the second floor of the building has been divided into offices and meeting rooms for the company using 156 square metres of Smart’s AluSpace internal screening system.Finished in black for this project, the aluminium system features slim and elegant lines to allow light and airy internal environments to be created, while at the same time providing an effective acoustic barrier. Eight AluSpace hinged doors were installed as part of the internal screening system, all but one of which is hinged, with a sliding door installed at the entrance to a staircase. Finally on the second floor, Glaze created a large conference room using the Smart AluSpace system, with the rest of the floor having been converted into individual offices which are available for local businesses to rent. From effectively a blank canvas, the once near-derelict building has been created into a stunning office facility, completely transforming both the building and the area in which it stands.

After extensive research, planning, and customisation tailored to their unique needs, they got exactly what they wished for - an incredible 36m wide Wall-Holla with not one but three thrilling Drop Zone elevators!Turning unused space into a popular family oasisThe Czyżyny Park Avia is an example of how public participation can help create vibrant recreational spaces that benefit the whole community. It provides an opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy nature while engaging in physical activity with friends and family. The park is located in the area of the former bus depot and part of a disused airport where used to be 3 hectares of asphalt and concrete. The playground includes climbing frames, carousels, swings, and a vertical playground Wall-Holla with challenging obstacles that will keep kids entertained for hours. There is also an outdoor gym with Lappset's metal gym equipment. The end result is a very popular recreational family place in the city of Kraków with a nice story still referring to its previous function: planes and buses are part of the pattern on the EPDM surface at the playground. The project was part of THE GREEN CITIES EUROPE AWARD – 2022 and it has been praised for its quality recreational spaces and innovative value.

London City Island - Wall Recessed Mailboxes & Fire Rated Mailboxes

The Safety Letterbox Company

THE PROJECTLondon City Island is a high-end residential and commercial neighbourhood development that takes inspiration from the very best of global metropolitan communities; combining bold architecture and pioneering urban design. The development is located in an extremely well-connected site between the financial might of Canary Wharf and trendy East London. London City Island is home to 1600 residential properties, 20,000 square metres of commercial office space, cafes, shops, restaurants and cultural facilities; offering something for everyone. We are once again delighted to be involved within this vibrant new and exciting site.THE PRODUCTThe London City Island development is split over a number of differences phases and blocks, with each development having a slightly different requirement and specification for mailboxes. A number of different mailbox models were used on the project, to match the different design finishes of each phase of the development. Our horizontal fire rated 2 mailboxes were used on two phases where there was a specific requirement for a post box to meet a Class 0 Part 22 1 hour integrity only fire rating. The first bank of mailboxes are wall recessed and fitted with a surrounding trim to provide the mailboxes with a clean finish from the mailbox to the installation wall. This bank of mailboxes were assembled into a configuration of 9 high x 9 wide prior to despatch, allowing easy installation once on site. The mailboxes have been finished in a non-standard colour (D2525-Y2217 matt) and engraved on the inward-sprung flap with an apartment number in a contrasting jet black colour. The second bank of fire rated 2 mailboxes also conformed to Part 22 fire rating standards. This bank was configured into a bank of 4 high x 6 wide mailboxes, finished in a standard colour chosen from the RAL colour chart and engraved in a contrasting white engraving on the inward-sprung flap. The third bank of mailboxes is located in a dedicated mailroom, wall recessed to maximise room for residents and mail delivery personnel to use the mailboxes. As is common practice with all wall recessed mailboxes, these banks of post boxes have also been fitted with a surrounding trim, ensuring the highest finish quality is achieved on the development. Also used on the project were the MODA mailboxes in the horizontal orientation with a width of 260mm. The MODA mailbox is popular with clients requiring a versatile and attractive product particularly useful for multi-coloured and multi-sized arrangements. This phase of the London City Island development shows how the MODA mailbox can be used in a more straightforward manner with a classic bank of wall recessed mailboxes finish in a single colour. Each mailbox has been engraving on the opening flap, infilled in a contrasting silver colour finish. All mailboxes on this development are in front / out front, allowing for mail to delivered and retrieved through the front face.
