St Michael’s Catholic Church is a mid 19th Century church in Brecon, Powys. It is one of the most historic churches in Diocese of Menevia.Bryan Roe, Senior Sales Executive of KEIM Mineral Paints, was contacted by the decorator, Mike Curry of Phillips & Curry to visit the Grade II listed church.The architect, Bonnie Kitching of Hummingbird Architecture Limited and Mike Curry had used KEIM previously on other projects and were delighted with the results. Bonnie, in particular, was looking for a paint system that offered breathability so specified KEIM on this project.There were a multitude of coats of various paint systems, including limewash, covering the lime plaster and concrete surfaces.KEIM recommended removing all existing coatings, as there was moisture entrapment, to obtain breathability of the KEIM products. Once all surfaces were dry and moisture readings were below 18%, KEIM Granital Dilution was used to treat the areas of lime which were chalky and powdery.KEIM Dolomitspachtel, a mineral filler, was then applied as a skim coat on some areas to equalise textural difference on the surface and defects.KEIM Optil White was the required system due to its endless benefits, including breathability, durability and longevity. The white makes the interior church look pristine and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Britannia Leisure Centre is a new multi-sport community complex in Hackney. A key driver for the client was that the building should have a compact footprint. This was achieved by stacking the facilities, creating a rooftop MUGA with tennis courts and 5-a-side football pitches.Lang+Fulton supplied the external grating panels which crown the building and offer panoramic views of London. These were made from their Terra-34 grating which features an anti-climb aperture. The narrow panels were designed to continue the architectural theme of the building’s columns and vertical elements and were finished in a graphite grey ppc to compliment the neutral palette of stone, concrete and glass.In addition a grating screen was supplied to secure the upper levels of the stairway providing natural daylight and through visibility to the entrance atrium and cafe area.The steel grating also conformed to the requirement for material durability and low maintenance which were key specification considerations.Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney has written, 'I am so proud that we have delivered one of London’s best leisure centres, with absolutely incredible facilities that are affordable for people to enjoy'.The Britannia Leisure Centre has received multiple awards including Overall Building of the Year (New London Architecture).

Owner: Aberdeen Asset Management Principal Contractor: Cemplas Waterproofing & Concrete Repairs Ltd Main Products Used: EMSEAL SJS systemCemplas has recently completed repair works at the Elmsleigh Shopping Centre in Staines, which included the replacement of deteriorated and failing mechanical movement joints in the service decks. The Centre’s retail units are supplied via ramps to these service decks, which carry the delivery traffic above the stores, plus the decks are also used for car parking, meaning that in addition to being fully exposed to weathering, they are subject to almost continuous dynamic loading from traffic up to and including heavy articulated HGV’s. Unfortunately, despite past attempts at repair and resealing, there had continued to be water ingress through these joints, both into the structure and into the retail units that are directly below, resulting in disruption, damage and cost for everyone involved. The innovative Emseal SJS system that includes integral cover plates, but with no mechanical fixings required, was selected by the Project Engineers as being ideal to accommodate the necessary movement, seal the joints and withstand the traffic loadings. Additionally, as access was only required from the top deck to install the Emseal SJS System, Cemplas was able to carry out the works quickly and keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

Precision micro, a UK based manufacturer of precision metal components for the automotive, aerospace and pharmaceutical industries were investing in a refurbishment of their photochemical etching facilities. The state of the art facility required a highly chemically resistant easy to clean floor finish. Various existing substrates needed to be pulled together to create one seamless finish with an integrated cove. Due to the chemicals utilised in the area, there is a risk of airborne corrosives attacking the metal ceilings, so an acid resistant protective coating was also required overhead.After extensive trials and chemical exposure testing, Remmers resin systems were selected for the works. For the ceiling, Epoxy BS3000 SG provided chemical protection to the galvanised steel surface and exhibited excellent adhesive properties after the steel was prepared using an ice blasting process. The floors were a mixture of existing resin finishes, new concrete and Polypropylene drain covers. A selection of priming solutions for the different areas were utilised including, Epoxy ST100, Epoxy MT100 and Epoxy BS3000 SG. Then topped with Epoxy Flex PH laid at 2mm and sealed with PUR Top M+. REQUIREMENT: Compliant ramped access to the recently built outdoor classroom. END RESULT:The ground in the front of the entrance is split between tarmac and a barked area. The tarmac is slightly higher and solid, whereas the barked area is a soft surface. Due to this, weed membrane was rolled over the barked area, and the ramp feet on that side were fixed to concrete slabs.All legs were adjusted accordingly to achieve a level walkway with a compliant gradient of 1:15.The ramp fully complies with Document K and M of the Building Regulations.FEATURES INCLUDED: Infill Handrail - this product prevents users from climbing or falling through gaps.Telescopic Legs - these can be adjusted to accommodate different threshold heights.Yellow Tread - this is a safety feature designed to help those with impaired vision identify the nose of the ramp and any level changes.Trombone Ends - these are added to the ends of a Rapid Ramp to prevent clothes catching.Mesh Platform - the self-draining mesh allows water to pass through rather than collect on the surface.1100mm High Rail – these handrails attach to any level sections.Continuous Handrail - this handrail system ensures users always have support to hold onto.Standard colour: Black - Ramps are powder coated black to create a durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

Winner of the MIPM 2010 award for Hotels and Tourism, which is presented for outstanding real state projects worldwide, the Kameha Grand was designed by architect Karl-Heinz Schommer Bonner. The unique elliptical section design did however make serious demands on the requirement for protection against thermal bridging. The architect discussed the issue with Schöck, the European specialists in thermal bridging solutions and it was agreed that a combination of three product variants would meet the requirement.The outer concrete arches on the roof and facade of the building cantilever 1.30 m on each side and this, combined with the subtle design of the facade, meant that it was not possible to use a standard thermal break solution. To minimise any thermal bridging problems along the two outer arcs an inventive solution had to be found by the Schöck design team. This was achieved by dividing the projecting element of the framework into a number of sections and using the appropriate Isokorb® T for the required forces. At the ground floor Isokorb® T type Q is used, with T type D being installed higher up the structure, followed by T type K on the top floor. Because of the arch profile, the Isokorb® T type D was cut and installed at 90 degrees and run under the curved edge of the roof emergency exits, providing F90 fire protection.

The award-winning and BREEAM Outstanding Engineering Building at the internationally renowned Lancaster University features a complete range of architectural aluminium glazing systems from Technal. Located on the Lancaster University campus in the North West of England, the new engineering facility was awarded Winner of the RIBA National Award for 2015 and was highly commended by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the Design through Innovation category at the 2016 RICS North West Awards. Purpose-built to a world-class standard, the scheme comprises of 4,701 sqm of workshop, laboratory and office space in two concrete framed blocks either side of a dramatic four-storey atrium. Using passive techniques to achieve the environmental performance measure of BREEAM 'outstanding' in the design assessment, which is in-line with Lancaster University's sustainability and carbon reduction targets. With this in mind, aluminium doors and curtain walling were chosen for this project. The Facade is featured throughout the building, and was specified for its contemporary aesthetics. The system also includes concealed vents to allow natural ventilation without compromising the architectural integrity of the facade. With natural light being a key part of the specification, Technal aluminium curtain walling allowed larger and heavier glazing units to be installed thanks to its superior load distribution, permitting more natural light to flow through the building's rooms.

The Townscape Unity range is designed to enhance and transform any urban space while maintaining functionality. The seating and planters are robust yet easy to move if or when necessary. The products used here were the Unity 1250 seat with deck top and the Unity 1250 planter in a Yorkstone buff finish.The landscaping upgrade was prepared as part of the Towns preparation for The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The main theme is based on the idea of Tudor plants, particularly those with medicinal properties. Tudor gardens were designed to provide food, medicine, and a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The herbs that have been planted near the Wolsey statue are some of the medieval healing herbs thought to have beneficial properties for the lungs, heart, digestion, and headache.
