TRC were appointed by Mulalley & Co LTD to design, supply and install 205 fully glazed and factory finished traditional box sash windows for Vauxhall primary school in London.Vauxhall Primary School is one of many British schools to be financed by the government in their mission to refurbish schools across the country.The Department for Education has invested £11.3bn since 2015 to enable schools to refurbish their buildings – this includes £1.8b in 2021-22 alone.We have a huge amount of experience and expertise in restoring and breathing new life into schools, hospitals and other significant public buildings, with Vauxhall Primary School being one of six school projects that TRC has completed since the ease of 2021’s COVID restrictions.We installed 205 fully glazed and factory finished Traditional Box Sash windows into hardwood consisting of a height of 3500mm with Teleflex operated top lights.Not only do the Traditional Box Sash windows provide a timeless classic look, they also provide incredibly efficient cooling, keeping classrooms cooler and pupils more comfortable during warmer months.The windows installed had to comply with the following specification requirements:Double glazed sash windows to achieve overall Uw-value of 1.4 w/m2k;Hardwood Georgian barsPas24 Enhanced Security element for ground floor windows 

The £29m South West College in Enniskillen, designed by Hamilton Architects LLP and built by Tracey Brothers Ltd, is the first building in Ireland to be designed to Passivhaus Premium Plus standard, delivering an average project façade u-value of 0.8w/m2K. The 8,000sqm education and community facility is situated on the prime site of the former Erne Hospital and won the 2021 BREEAM Official Public Sector Project – Design Stage Award.Amongst the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world, the Erne Campus has been recognised as a UN Centre of Excellence for High Performance Buildings. The Pears Building by Hopkins Architects is a world-class immunology research and treatment centre built for University College London. With only 5 similar specialist immunology centres in the world (and the only one outside of the US), the Pears Building offers world-class expertise to patients. The Pears Building provides offices, multiple research wings to house over 200 researchers and a 35-bed patient hospital for outpatients or visiting academics.At the centre of the building is a large atrium with joins the wider building and its office space to the public-facing café and entrance area. Vast, open windows flood interiors with huge amounts of natural light creating a soothing, and uncluttered feeling. Materials selected for the building were done for their sustainable credentials, ease of maintenance, durability, and cost.The Pears Building was designed to avoid becoming a “monolithic” structure and sits well within the local area. During its construction efforts were made to retain as many existing trees on the site as possible to ensure the village-esque feeling of Hampstead is uninterrupted. As expected with forward-thinking institutions, the architects endeavoured to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating, which it easily achieved with its holistic approach to sustainability.The Pears building uses Freshfield Lanes First Quality Multi in its construction and has been commended for numerous awards and won the Public Buildings award at the Construction News Awards.

St Luke's Cancer Centre is a clinic that sits as part of the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Providing care for cancer patients across the county, this clinic has undergone work to extend and refurbish the space within the clinic: including the creation of nearly double the amount of existing clinical space, spacious entrances, and a whole range of additional clinical facilities. ChallengeSpecialist roofing company Salnor Roofing Services Ltd were contracted to secure the roof of the clinic, a flat roof with varying levels of tapered insulation - meaning added complexity to the project. SolutionSalnor Roofing turned to Fixfast to carry out both a windload calculation and tube/fastener selection for the tapered insulation scheme, which gave them a detailed breakdown of the fasteners and tube washers required to securely fix the roof. Fixfast supplied SF-T tube washers combined with SF-RS-5.8 fasteners, in different lengths to match the levels of insulation on the roof - for both the insulation and membrane fix. IssueA dilapidated former care home was being redeveloped into high specification, modern flats and communal spaces. The new flats were to provide bespoke, accessible accommodation for people with autism, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, with an on-site café open to the community. The aim was to create bright, modern, living, and communal spaces, without an institutional feel.ApproachThe flats offer different levels of support for residents. Support provided within people’s own homes is tailored to each person’s needs and supports individuals who are stepping down from secure units and hospitals including those who may have experienced previous placement breakdowns.Interior Designer, Penny Green, having worked with Altro products for many years, liaised with Altro to select a range of floor options to deliver flexible solutions in the different application areas, suitable for resident’s needs.SolutionAltro Ensemble luxury vinyl tiles was specified for The Foundry Café, bringing the benefit of 15dB sound reduction, and added comfort underfoot.In areas with a higher risk of slip, Altro Wood was selected to match the colour scheme, providing a biophilic safe option together with homely aesthetics. Ladywell Convent is the Motherhouse of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) congregation, an international religious congregation of Catholic women who proclaim the joy and freedom of the Gospel in the spirit of Francis and Claire of Assisi.Situated in the beautiful Surrey hills, the Convent offers hospitality for returning Missionaries and visitors and is also the site of La Verna, a home for elderly sisters and those who support them.Previously named Tuesley Court and bought by the FMDM in 1956, Ladywell is Arts and Crafts in style, Grade II listed and an oasis of calm and tranquility just outside Godalming.An extensive refurbishment was recently carried out to the residential and conference buildings on the site ensuring their suitability for an aging group of sisters. Two new support buildings were also constructed.Side hung casements from the Clement SMW range with genuine 12mm flat leads were installed in the new Greccio building, polyester powder painted RAL 9005 (Jet Black) semi gloss with the handles, hinges and peg stays powder coated to match the frames. Windows from the Clement EB20 steel window range with 12mm oval leads were installed in the Staff Building, also painted RAL 9005.Michael O’Brien from O&D Constuction said:“Steel windows manufactured by Clement were the right choice because of their close match to the existing heritage windows at Ladywell Convent. The team at Clement did a great job – they delivered the project on time and there were no issues.”Photography: Laura Kelly, LSK Photo

System Used - TerraSmart pedestal IGNOThe Botanist is a botanical cocktail bar in the heart of Newcastle. Complete with a rooftop terrace bar, it entices revellers and partygoers with a welcoming and curated look. The natural materials of the terrace bar, mixed with the abundance of plants and natural light, transport customers to a chic, far-off watering hole. To complement and contrast the natural materials in the industrial setting, the bare materials, exposed brick, and stone effect tiles give a suggestive canvas to the biophilic decor. The design function of the terrace is as a high foot traffic area for social meetings. To fully support the paved area in these situations, we have seen a rise in users looking for simple pedestal systems that still provide a robust substructure at an economical rate. The pedestals have a wide base acting as a stable foundation and spacer tabs that equally space the pavers apart to create drainage channels.Sasso porcelain tiles could support the primary use of the space due to their inherent properties. These porcelain paving tiles are naturally non-porous, protecting the finish from staining. This non-porous property also makes the tiles resistant to bitumen and algae. The tile also features a low slip potential in both; wet and dry conditions. Chateau Denmark represents a new concept in hospitality venues, offering an eclectic place to stay in the home of British rock music- Denmark Street London.For the design team of Taylor Howes working with CAW Ventures, the challenge has been to create interiors that paid homage to the innovation, history and drama of the location- where the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and the Sex Pistols all hung out.The team had to bring cohesion across 55 rooms and apartments over 16 buildings, some of which are listed. Thus, four design narratives across 11 base build designs were conceived to reflect the heritage and rebellion of the properties and their surroundings.To achieve the industrial rawness that is the essence of the Loft build design, Armourcoat’s Concrete Effect panels were specified. The deconstructed look and tactile surface of the panels achieves the unfinished, textured appearance of shuttered concrete in an easy to install, lightweight format.The Concrete Effect panels bring a distinctive industrial style to the interior, with their inclusion of distressed effects and shutter markings. The original timber sleepers used for Manchester Royal Infirmary external areas had begun to rot away quite early in their lifespan. We were tasked with replicating the existing footprint of planters to replace them within the confines of the existing paving. All installation works were undertaken in a busy hospital with minimal impact on patients and workers. Using a typographical survey we created CAD outlines for each planter, a number of existing structures featured extremely tight angles, which meant we needed to modify our corner cuts to ensure a perfect match.Our components were all pre-cut ready for installation so there was no need to use any heavy machinery on site. An engineered solution without compromising aestheticsThe projectWhen designing their London headquarters, leading risk management firm Sedgwick approached XAB Architects to guide them through the process. The new breakout area was specifically designed to serve as a collaborative focal point, embracing Sedgwick’s new ways of working. To ensure this was an effective and acoustically balanced space, XAB recruited the help of Autex Acoustics®.The challenge Sedgwick HQ required an acoustic solution that allowed for open flow from the office area while containing disruptive noises. On top of this, the selected solution needed to effectively incorporate a sprinkler system within the feature ceiling. It was essential that the design aimed to strike a delicate balance between a functional workspace and a softer, hospitality-style ambience, the challenge being to seamlessly merge these contrasting elements into one solution.The solutionWe worked closely with XAB and fire engineers to develop a bespoke ceiling solution that aligned with the project’s design intent and pushed the boundaries of existing products. The chosen option, a bespoke coffered ceiling grid made from 12 mm Cube™, was developed to ensure adequate sprinkler coverage whilst effectively diverting attention away from the array of sprinkler heads. The design, in combination with the superior acoustic performance of Cube, provides targeted sound absorption while introducing softer textures into the overall design.The resultWorking collaboratively with fire engineers to design a solution to integrate a sprinkler system was essential to the project’s success. On top of this, we liaised closely with the installers to ensure a smooth installation process, contributing to the project’s efficiency and timely completion. The collaborative approach resulted in a unique and functional ceiling design that met the client’s aesthetic and acoustic requirements.

After carrying out a fire door survey, Warwick Hospital undertook measures to protect and refurbish the fire doors throughout their sterilisation unit with Yeoman Shield door protection products.Catering for the sterilisation requirements for all wards and departments within South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust as well as GP surgeries and clinics, the department is a hub of activity. The movement of heavily laden trolleys and equipment around the unit had caused impact damage to the department’s doors around door edges, glazing beads and the door fronts. Damage to these particular parts of a fire door can render it unfit for purpose.In this instance Yeoman Shield fired rated door protection products were used to refurbish and then protect from further impact damage. Door edge protectors were fitted to the leading and meeting edges of the doors with door protection panels installed to a height that would shield the most vulnerable areas.For additional protection, particularly to ward off blows to the glazing bead section of the doors, Yeoman Shield’s rub rail was fitted to the face of the door just below the vision panels. Colours of Blue and Red were chosen to distinguish between the contaminated and sterile areas within the unit.Yeoman Shield door protection products come with current and relevant fire certificates and do not affect the integrity of a fire door when installed but will continue to protect from detrimental impact damage for many years to come.Malcolm Bloxham Reactive Supervisor commented “We have used Yeoman Shield for many years and find their door protection products perfect for maintaining our fire doors in good working condition, helping to reduce our door maintenance costs by minimising repair and replacement requirements.”

New Farnley Cricket Club in Leeds, when given the greenlight to open their bar and restaurant, wanted to ensure that their returning clientele would feel comfortable by providing facilities in line with the government guidance on Covid 19 safety.Along with clear signage and establishing a one-way system through the club house, New Farnley CC commissioned protective screening from wall & door protection specialists Yeoman Shield.To help protect staff and customers alike from viral loads that can be expelled by coughing, sneezing or shouting, Yeoman Shield installed a bespoke 800mm high screen using 4mm thick clear uPVC affixed around the bar with attractive chrome brackets and fixings.Yeoman Shield portable protective screens were also supplied to help with the configuration and separation of dining tables and the social distancing of patrons whilst waiting in the expected queuing systems.Being lightweight the screens can be moved around easily to accommodate requirements whilst being sturdy enough not to be knocked or tipped over.The portable screens are available in a range of options such as clear or frosted uPVC or with the alternative of a clear top half giving a sense of space coupled with a through coloured, frosted or design printed bottom half.The club’s Chairman, Mr John Baldwin, commented “It’s been great that Yeoman Shield were able to provide us with the right solution to our social distancing requirements to enable the club to re-open, which like other sports clubs, provide amenities to the local community.”Yeoman Shield have also been providing similar solutions for Hospitals, Schools and Offices allowing visitors, students and employees to return to safe environments.

Edinburgh based football club, Heart of Midlothian Football Club (Hearts FC) is a city institution and its Tynecastle stadium is classed as a ‘must-visit’ destination for any football-mad tourist. The recent multimillion pound redevelopment has seen it undergo a major transformation to ensure visitors have the most memorable and safe experience possible.It’s no surprise that football fans want refreshments while at the stadium, so the concourse houses a number of food and drink kiosks around the ground. Something that can be found at each and every kiosk is an Instanta InstaTap – and with 30 new machines purchased as part of the refurbishment programme, that takes the total up to 50 so far.“We originally started using Instanta about three years ago”, comments Graeme Pacitti, head of hospitality and catering operations, “after the competitor product we were using back then just kept breaking down. We looked around for a replacement and narrowed it down to two products, but went with Instanta because we liked the idea of being with a British manufacturer. The FM company of a large Yorkshire Hospital engaged with wall & door protection specialists, Yeoman Shield, to resolve the unsightly and problematic damage that was occurring to fire doors in a busy specialist unit.Such damage, caused by the everyday passage of people, trolleys and equipment, if not attended to, may have become detrimental to the functioning of the fire doors.Yeoman Shield were able to provide a comprehensive fire rated door protection system, which when installed does not affect the fire integrity, to help combat and break the damage cycle, helping to prolong the life of the doors.Door Edge protectors, either FD60 or FD30, according to a doors rating, were installed to the vulnerable leading and hinged edges of the door to prevent chipping and splintering and helping to maintain the recommended 3mm gap between doors and frames.The leaves of the doors were covered with Yeoman Shield’s 2mm thick FalmouthEx protection panels at either full or half height dependent on where the impact was more prevalent, preventing dents or holes from manifesting in the future.Standard glazing beads were replaced with PVCu clad units, complete with corresponding intumescent strip, helping to protect an element of the door much prone to damage.A further part of the fire door refurbishment project was the addition of an Architrave and Stop Lath protection system. Resilient 250 was installed as a Soft Floor Covering and bonded to the top of the concrete base. The acoustic underlay achieves the Approved Document E UK Building Regulations (The Resistance to the Passage of Sound) performance standards for Floor Type 1.Resilient 250 was bonded to the concrete base with the Sonixx SX900 adhesive in the living areas of 255 apartments. An 8mm PU foam underlay (Super 8) was loose laid over Resilient 250 and a Cavalier carpet stretch fitted on top.In the bathroom areas the Forbo Surestep Laguna vinyl was installed directly onto the Resilient 250 using F46 (Pressure Sensitive Acrylic Adhesive) from F. Ball and Co Ltd.Resilient 250 is a 2.5mm thick, high performing acoustic underlay manufactured using sponge rubber. It achieves an acoustic performance of 19 dB (ΔLw), significantly reducing the transmission of impact sound. Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London, the best-known animal sanctuary in the world, is currently undergoing the biggest development in its 154-year history - a £5 million scheme delivered by main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine. The development will bring the charity’s existing buildings and facilities into the 21st century and will include a new build, state of the art veterinary hospital which will be protected by an innovative new waterproof membrane – Cold Melt® from Proteus – a seamless application designed to work in harmony with the roof infrastructure and so tough that it has been BBA certified to last for the lifetime of the building.Quality Control An integral part of this transformation is the built up roofing system of 1,200 square metres of Cold Melt®. Applied by the Proteus Licenced Contractor, a 5 layer built up system was employed to offer a bespoke specification tailored to the client’s needs and budget.The built up system consisted of a layer of Cold Melt® Proteus’ own innovative, cold-applied liquid membrane, over which an insulation layer of Proteus Pro-Therm XPS was laid. At Metropolitan Gaming in Mayfair, London, Style worked with architects, Whitebox, and contractors, Modufit Interiors, to create the facility to section off part of the main gaming area for a private VIP lounge. A glass HSW (Horizontal Sliding Wall) was installed, giving staff the ability to rapidly divide the room into two, sectioning off a VIP gaming area to create a unique experience for clients. The moveable wall neatly divides the VIP area away from the main public gaming room, with a lockable full height intermediate door for ease of access. The bronze opaque textured glass allows light to flow through the entire area but offers the level of privacy required for a private room. Decorative transom bars bonded onto the glass add perfectly to the opulent room design.Metropolitan Gaming boasts a wealth of experience in both gaming and hospitality. Drawing on over 20 years of experience installing operable walls, Style was recently challenged to come up with a solution to divide a large meeting area, despite there being no suitable structure in the ceiling to utilise as a fixing point. After some lateral thinking and close communication with the client, a non-structural timber frame was created for support, with the weight of the folding wall being transferred to the ground via a surface mounted floor track. Built in 1797, Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings based just outside the town centre, was the world's first iron-framed building. It has won the RIBA Regional West Midlands Building of the Year Award 2024.For almost 100 years, the site operated as a state-of-the art steam powered flax mill, before being converted into maltings and during the Second World War used as temporary military barracks. It closed in 1987 but was bought by Historic England in 2005.KEIM Mineral Paints were approached by the architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, in 2017 to help bring this project back to life as a workspace, social enterprise hub and leisure destination. Bryan Roe, Senior Sales Executive of KEIM Mineral Paints visited site and upon inspection found up to 15 layers of paint delaminating from the brickwork. The application of impermeable coatings had contributed to delamination and required removal prior to redecoration. Surface breathability cannot be restored unless impermeable coatings are removed. KEIM Mineral Paints chemically bond to mineral substrates, providing surface protection and UV stable pigment.The Thermatech superheated water cleaning system was used to remove the existing coatings and ensure full breathability and adhesion of KEIM Paints.On the brick barrel vaults, the previous coatings were mechanically abraded as the Thermatech system would have been too harsh for the substrate.KEIM GW Primer was applied as a base coat, followed by a two-coat application of KEIM Ecosil-ME White which is a highly specialised silicate-based interior paint. It has a photocatalytic effect, reducing harmful gases and neutralising odours, specially formulated for heavily used interior spaces such as public buildings, schools and hospitals.For the lettering on the exterior of the building, KEIM Royalan in a black shade was used and KEIM Soldalit-ME White was applied as a block stripe across the façade.This is a lovely example of how an historic building that has been in decline for decades can be sustainably reused through innovation, revolution and gentle touch to repair of the fabric. Sitting on the banks of the River Clyde, the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel (GJCH) has recently been refurbished to a create hygienic, neutral and relaxing environment for guests. Designed by SPACE Solutions, Forbo Flooring Systems’ Allura Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) were specified to fulfil the cleanability and design requirements set by the hotel.The GJHC provides accommodation and conference facilities in the centre of Glasgow and sees a range of guests, from hospital staff and pre/post-operative patients to conference goers and more. As such, it was important that the rooms could satisfy the needs of every guest.SPACE Solutions was tasked to refurbish the 53 rooms, prioritising hygiene and comfort. Gillian Ralston, Senior Architect at SPACE Solutions spoke on the brief they received, saying: “With this project we wanted to create a welcoming, warm and inviting setting, with easily cleanable furniture and flooring. To make this happen, we had to design the rooms in a way that would minimise the risk of contamination for not only the guests, but also the staff who have to clean the rooms after a stay. However, we had to do this without compromising on the aesthetic value of the rooms. That’s why Forbo’s Allura LVT was perfect for this project.”Forbo’s Allura Decibel was specified in the Seagrass Anthracite and Light Grey Seagrass colourways, which both have a similar patterning. As well as this, the grey and green hues matched some of the design inspiration Gillian took from the surrounding environment.Gillian continued: “We chose Allura as it was available in designs that matched the scheme we had in mind, whilst also being easy to clean, fulfilling the hygiene requirements, and providing underfoot comfort.
