This new shared campus for two North Lanarkshire primary schools has been designed by leading architects Halliday Fraser Munro to reflect the individual identities of the two schools whilst uniting them in one single building.The layout of the new school building reflects the dual-nature of the campus, with two separate two-storey teaching wings set around a central courtyard. This open space and the surrounding linked buildings provide shared facilities including a gymnasium and dining hall. Constructed by main contractor and established supply chain partner, Morgan Sindall, the new modern school building benefits from several aluminium fenestration solutions from across Senior’s extensive range.The eye-catching main façade features Senior’s thermally-enhanced SF52 aluminium curtain wall system with integrated SPW501 aluminium commercial doors which provide safe and secure access. Throughout the building, Senior’s patented low U-value PURe® aluminium casement windows have been specified to help reduce heat loss and boost the overall energy-efficiency of the scheme. Senior’s fenestration systems were fabricated and installed by specialist contractor Linn-Tech.

dormakaba was awarded the contract to provide an integrated IT solution for the first college that was built on the new Heslington East site- Goodricke College, named after the British astronomer John Goodricke, offering accommodation and other facilities for students. dormakaba installed a fully integrated solution at the college, comprising dormakaba Exos system, CardLink standalone components, C-Levers and pExtra high securitymechanical cylinders. Geoff Brown, Security Manager at University of York commented: “dormakaba's Exos system is the software that allows us to centrally manage the system. The University of York has 9 colleges and in each college we have residential students. Residential students have a dormakaba card that allows them access to the main building and also we allow access to communal areas, including the cycle shed.” Installing fully integrated system enabled the university to have a cost effective and flexible access control on any door, barrier, lift or access point coupled with a reliable and accurate time recording solution for staff, students and contractors. Mark Barber added: “One of the big plus points of it, is that we are able to feed Exos on a nightly basis with records from our people data base which contains all our current staff and students- so we always have up-to-date list of university members in the Exos data base. One of the by-products of that, is that we can also feed through into Exos expiry dates of when staff or students are about to leave so without any other interventions, by setting certain parameter within the interface, people’s access right can be revoke automatically and universally in the dormakaba system”. Further developments under one unified dormakaba Exos system, included control of doors at the Physics and Electronics building that has been added onto the existing campus. A further online Exos doors, C- Levers and pExtra cylinders were installed at various new department buildings throughout Heslington East, including Theatre, Film and TV (TFTV), Law and Management (L&M), Computer Science Building (CSB) and the Communal Area(HUB). Bolton Gate were specified to provide the security grilles for the recently completed extension and refurbishment of the BMW Motorcycle showroom in Manchester. In keeping with the prestigious appearance of the building and high-end motorcycles on show, parallel mesh electric grilles in polished stainless steel were chosen to protect the showroom and external windows. In order to remain unobtrusive during trading hours, the bottom rails and side guides were powder coated white to match the surrounding walls and ceiling. For ease of operation, all grilles were electrically linked to allow simultaneous operation.

Witley Court is a ruined Italianate mansion built in the seventeenth century and expanded in the early nineteenth century by the Architect John Nash. In 1937 a major accidental fire broke out and whilst the building is in ruins, it is Grade I listed and in the care of English Heritage who restored the formal gardens and fountains. Bolton Gate were engaged to design and manufacture gates replacement gates to provide night-time security with special folding bottom tracks to leave the floor surface intact and installed with great care to maintain the building’s status.

The Christ Church C of E Primary School has been constructed to serve the local community and boasts an attractive design by Gollifer Langston Architects, with the L shape plan of the new school forming two sides of a courtyard.Constructed by the Lindum Group, the attractive and contemporary design of the new school building embraces the use of natural daylighting and the extensive use of glazing helps to strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces. Senior’s slimline SF52 aluminium curtain wall system has created a light and welcoming entrance, with Senior’s versatile SPW600 aluminium windows and secure SPW501 aluminium commercial doors used throughout.Robust and fully recyclable, Senior’s aluminium fenestration systems were powder-coated to further enhance durability and to complement the white brise-soleil installed to the south side of the building to help control solar gain. Senior curtain walling and glazing systems have been designed to help specifers working in this market meet the required environmental requirements by creating high-visibility shop frontages that minimise solar gain to create a comfortable consumer experience.Senior Architectural Systems’ stylish SF52 aluminium curtain wall system has been used to great effect at a new luxury car showroom in Wakefield, creating an eye-catching and thermally-efficient façade that maximises the use of daylighting. The Coborn Centre for Adolescent Mental Health, opened in 2006, is one of the first purpose-built adolescent units in the UK. The Centre offers in-patient and day care services for young people between 12 and 18 years old. With 12 bedrooms, the Galaxy Ward provides specialist Intensive Care services for young people who are experiencing significant emotional or mental distress. Working with young people, their families and carers, Galaxy Ward aims to provide young people with the best possible care whilst respecting their views, beliefs and culture.  After great consideration, they selected our en-suite door, seeing it as the only solution to balance safety, whilst ensuring privacy and dignity for those staying at the facility.

As part of a £14 million redevelopment of Bolton’s Market Place Shopping Centre, the extensive historic vaults that lay beneath were uncovered and developed into bar and restaurant units. Bolton Gate were engaged to design, manufacture and install nine collapsible steel gates which spanned the openings some of which were arched and in keeping with the surrounding metalwork, a clear powder coating was applied over the galvanised substrate to match. In addition to the vault gates, Bolton Gate also supplied a series of roller shutters, smoke and fire curtains in the upper development of the project.

Energy Efficient Heritage Windows for a Victorian RetrofitThe retrofit of Mews House, a low-energy Victorian listed mews property in West London, showcases how heritage windows can be utilised in a retrofit project to enhance energy efficiency while preserving the building's character and historical features.A Conservation Area GemBuilt in 1878 as a traditional carriage house with stable doors, Mews House was later converted into a residential property. However, over time, it suffered from poor layout, inadequate heating, and tired exterior facades. Architects Prewett Bizley undertook the challenge of transforming the interior into a light-filled open-plan living space, improving the property's external appearance while adhering to the local conservation area guidelines, and significantly reducing its carbon footprint.The Role of Winston Sliding Sash WindowsReplacing the existing single-glazed windows with Gowercroft's Winston Sliding Sash windows played a vital role in achieving the project's sustainability and conservation objectives. The architect required windows with higher performance levels, including superior thermal efficiency and a traditional timber aesthetic that matched the original "multi-pane" windows, which was crucial for securing planning permission. A total of 16 Winston Sliding Sash windows of various sizes were installed, featuring traditional joinery elements such as glazing bars, fitch fasteners, pulleys, and concealed gaskets, creating an authentic appearance.Energy Efficiency and AchievementsThe use of vacuum glazing in the windows provided excellent energy efficiency, achieving an overall U-value of 1.5 W/m²K, with the potential to reach even lower values in future iterations. The air tightness of the frames, coupled with Gowercroft's sealing system, contributed to an impressive air tightness rating of close to 1 m³/m²hr at 50Pa, surpassing expectations for a property of this kind.The retrofit of Mews House resulted in an astounding 82% reduction in overall energy consumption, bringing it below the 2025 RIBA targets for new build houses. The replacement sash windows played a pivotal role in achieving this energy reduction, both through their U-value and by minimising air infiltration.Bob Prewett from Prewett Bizley expressed his satisfaction, stating, "What's amazing when people visit is that they are totally convinced the windows are original and single glazed."The successful integration of energy-efficient heritage windows in the Mews House retrofit sets a new benchmark for heritage preservation combined with sustainable design and demonstrates the potential for revitalising older properties to meet the energy standards of new builds.

Bawtry Mayflower Primary School were experiencing a considerable amount of damage to the corners of its interior walls from everyday wear and tear. it therefore needed to find an effective way of protecting both pupils and the fabric of its building whilst retaining much of its existing colour scheme and minimising the need for ongoing maintenance work.

A prestigious refurbishment contract in Manchester illustrates the appeal of Crittall Steel windows across different sectors. The Redfern building dates from 1936 when it was built for the Co-Operative Wholesale Society. Contractor Russells has upgraded the 60,000sq ft, six storey, brick-clad building originally designed by WA Johnson and JW Cropper and described as being in the Dutch brick modernism style. Crittall W20 windows were specified to replace the original steel fenestration, the new windows boasting frames even more slender than what had been, installed originally, thereby allowing more daylight to enter the offices and new retail units.

One of Northern Ireland’s most popular 20th century libraries has been refurbished and extended with Crittall Windows helping to retain its unique character. The original three-storey building was circular in plan with a distinctive saw-tooth window configuration on the first and second floors. Crittall Corporate W20 windows were specified for the contract, with polyester powder coated white frames they contribute to the overall light and airy feel. The double-glazed, weatherstripped windows suit perfectly a heritage building with a modern purpose. Designed and constructed to achieve a BREEAM Very Good certification.

Haberdasher Street is the appropriately-named location for the new headquarters of Drake’s London, a firm that since the late 1970s has specialised in the design and manufacture of men’s ties. The choice of Crittall Corporate W20 windows was not a difficult one – given that the main section of the building dates from the 1930s it was a natural decision to choose steel windows as these would have been installed originally. The functions within the building include workshops where people handmake ties, requiring a lot of natural light.

Pembury Circus in Hackney is a vibrant new residential development consisting of 268 units, re-establishing lost pedestrian routes through the estate and making a positive contribution to the townscape. The project was nominated for the 2019 Schüco Excellence Awards in the ‘Residential Development’ category. Pembury Circus now provides a setting for a successful mixed community of all ages – offering dedicated homes for older people, a nursery, a large community centre with neighbourhood management offices, shops, a new public open space and play area.

The origins of the University of Winchester date back to 1840 when the Winchester Diocesan Training School was set up as a Church of England foundation to train elementary school masters. Architects had been involved with the growing university campus since 2003, they were approached to work on the new facility, the St Alphege Learning & Teaching Building. The new building is located at the centre of the campus and physically connected to the existing 1970s St Edburga building via a glazed atrium. The latter building was to be refurbished internally and externally during a planned second phase of the project.

Concept FM has been looking to upgrade and modernise all entrances so that the client has reliable and secure access throughout all buildings.Solution: The SL500 automatic sliding door range offered full versatility, all the while being sturdy and resilient, which makes it perfect for Education buildings where high volume of traffic is expected but security is also a priority. Different versions of this SL500 family (Framed, Slim and Telescopic) have been used throughout the college to meet the specific demands of each block entrance and existing space, but maintaining similar specifications for consistency. Crittall spans the globe

The conversion of a west London former town hall to include residential accommodation features Crittall windows, carefully designed to preserve the building’s original character. The former Acton Town Hall, in Ealing London Borough, has been partly converted to provide a public library and leisure facilities but the Grade II listed structure also now contains a range of apartments. The building, which dates from 1909, was designed in an Italianate palazzo style, executed in locally made red bricks with Portland-stone dressings.  For the refurbishment and conversion the windows within the original building were replaced with Crittall Corporate W20 profiles.

The design and installation of the Schüco FWS 60 façade required complex setting out and fabrication due to the geometry associated with the façade and the feature diagrid running on the diagonal. The Catalyst became the first commercial office building in the North East to be awarded the certification of “Outstanding” by BREEAM, a rating only the top 1% of new UK non-domestic buildings.

Replacement like-for-like period style timber windows from the Mumford & Wood Conservation™ range have been installed in the thermal upgrade programme of St Margaret’s junior girls’ boarding house at the famous Cheltenham Ladies’ College. Other boarding houses at the school have also been refurbished in recent years with window replacements by Mumford & Wood.

Timber casement windows - renovation projects

The 110m, 29-storey curved on plan Westmark Tower is the tallest residential tower to have been completed in central London in 2021. Part of Berkeley Homes Central London’s prestigious West End Gate development in Marylebone, it features more than 14,000m2 of unitised curtain wall designed and supplied by aluminium fenestration specialists AluK and installed by envelope contractors Martifer. What makes this project really stand out is the collaborative approach that was demonstrated by AluK and the other consultants involved from the outset. With Berkeley at the centre of the process, the technical and commercial elements of the façade were successfully de-risked at pre-tender stage because AluK were able to work directly with lead architect Squire & Partners, delivery architect Design Delivery Unit (DDU), façade consultants Cladtech Associates and structural engineers WSP on a RIBA 4 system design for the unitised envelope. The challenge for AluK was to work with DDU to deliver a design that was true to the architect’s original intent whilst addressing the technical issues of a curved on plan façade from the second to 29th floor. All the unitised cells needed to be dead loaded back to a post tensioned concrete frame with a 3-dimensional floor bracket, whilst catering for the varying facets of the façade.The final unitised solution features more than 2200 unitised cells of three principal configurations. Each floor comprises: a vision cell, typically housing AluK’s concealed vent and full height glass panes, a panel cell, specifically designed to house specialist internal framework to carry articulated GRC (Glass Reinforced Concrete) feature piers and spandrels, and a recessed balcony cell with an integrated floating glass balustrade.With 36 different angles to overcome in a faceted design ranging from 0° to 15°, AluK developed a series of common aluminium extrusions to close the joints and reduce the number of profiles required. The horizontal stack joint uses an aluminium profile to carry the gasket and avoid the incidence of crimping as the cells are stacked around the building structure. What is also significant is that every cell connection provides four lines of system seal to ensure that the façade meets the stringent Cladtech performance specification and the CWCT Sequence B test.AluK’s system, extruded from 6063 T6 alloy, extracted benefits from both a mitred corner and a square cut system by creating a hybrid to suit both the client’s aesthetic desire for a mitred joint to the corners and Martifer’s manufacturing requirements of a square cut for economy.AluK also extruded tailored aluminium bracketry from a structural 6082 T6 alloy which was capable of supporting the system weight and allowing for 3-dimensional adjustment for precise installation.From the onset of the project, the Berkeley director team set out a time and design model of early engagement, specialist designers and fabricators all within a clear programme. This also included a series of productive workshops sharing client expectations and considerations. AluK not only facilitated these meetings but also bought into the collaborative ethos and contributed to a highly successful project for Berkeley.AluK’s designers are all from a fabrication/installation background and, as such, they design a value engineered solution from the outset. Part of this was using 14,000m2 of AluK’s AW86 unitised curtain walling system with minimal bespoke profiles and gaskets, yet it meets every challenge the project presented whilst offering a significant cost reduction in metal and accessories compared to the original specification in a competitor’s system. As part of the project team, AluK worked collaboratively alongside consultants Squire & Partners (concept architect), Buro Happold (thermal and acoustics), WSP (structures), Design Delivery Unit (delivery architect) and Cladtech (façade consultant). The façade design meets the thermal efficiency requirements of the building at 0.95W/m2K, as a weighted average. Using a 43dB Rw(+Ctr) acoustic glass, it also meets the sound reduction targets. Because AluK was involved at such an early stage in the project, the complete RIBA Stage 4 system design enabled façade contractors Martifer to realise significant cost savings for their tender and several months of time saving against their usual post-tender design and iteration phase. This also offered cost certainty for Berkeley and significantly de-risked the post tender delivery of the façade.Alongside the unitised curtain walling, the finished Westmark Tower will feature 241 AluK SC156 lift and slide doors, 750 concealed vents and 58 swing doors.West End Gate is Berkeley Homes’ latest luxury development being built on a 2.66-acre site. Described as a modern interpretation of classic London, it will feature a series of contemporary mansion blocks alongside the 29-storey curved stone tower. Work began on the first phase of West End Gate in the Spring of 2018 and was completed in Spring 2021, with internal fit out nearing the end.

When the Duty-Free Retail Area of the airport was recently refurbished, the design incorporated large sweeping curves on plan which also incorporated the shopfronts. The demise line of the shopfronts also entailed that they needed the facility to be closed off outside trading hours from a security point of view in addition to each unit being an individual fire compartment. Bolton Gate’s Contour shutters were specified which operate laterally and coil into a box at one end - this innovative product can describe an infinite number of bends and curves whilst closing off openings up to 100 metres wide.

Clement EB24 steel windows, doors and screens were the ideal choice of fenestration when it came to this jaw-dropping project in Arundel. The combination of T bars, slim, dark frames and satin chrome accessories create just the right look.Achieving such an exceptional appearance did not mean that performance had to be compromised.
