The hardwearing attributes of Amtico flooring and the unique cutting and design capabilities influenced Harrison Ince Architects when specifying for the two sites. Interior Designer, Louise Macartney explains: “Both pubs are extremely busy so they needed a floor that could withstand the demanding usage and footfall for many years to come. In addition, Amtico’s custom design service allowed us to transform our initial idea into reality creating a greater sense of identity for each pub.”

A series of stainless steel WC pans by GEC Anderson were specified for public lavatories in London’s Battersea Park.A special corner adaptation was produced to provide a solution to services that were located to the side of the WC. By creating a special boxing, the pipework has been fully concealed, thereby preventing vandalism and providing a totally hygienic solution.The stainless steel contrasts nicely with the vivid yellow colours adopted.Battersea Park comes under the London Borough of Wandsworth and the new facility is considered an important advancement to the amenities of this busy recreation area, just south of the river Thames.

Accoya decking selected for a floating jetty in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Accoya

Accoya has been selected as the ideal decking material for the Oosterdokseiland in Amsterdam. Designed by engineers IPV, Delft in the Netherlands, 300 metres of Accoya was used in total for the project. Each of the Accoya deck planks for the Jetty measured 145x35mm. The benches, (130x150mm) are also made of Accoya wood. After researching Oak and other wood species for the Jetty, De Boer and De Groot civil works chose Accoya due to its dimensional stability, long service life and sustainability credentials. The Accoya planks were screwed onto purlins which were then connected with anchors to the concrete floats.

The property was originally constructed in the 1930s for the garment industry and was refurbished in 2009. The building required a high quality washroom that could withstand the high traffic environment, whilst complementing the art deco design of the original building and its contemporary interior. Dolphin Solutions supported Burwell Deakins Architects and Stevens Services West End to create a very functional, outstanding washroom. Bevan Hancock, Project Manager at Elev8 was an excellent support throughout the project.

A bench made from recycled paint containers has been donated by Crown Paints Specification Services to celebrate the first year of a safety partnership with Derby Homes and Bell Group. Under a five-year contract, more than 200 Derby Homes’ properties across the East Midlands’ city are being painted with the flame retardant coating, Crown Trade Timonox Vinyl Matt, by a team of 20 from Bell Group. To mark the first year of the works, Derby Homes received the recycled bench at their headquarters in the city, which hosts a range of community facilities and meeting points for tenants.

DRU has installed 89 gas fires into Ebury Square, a development of luxury 1-4 bedroom apartments and 5 bedroom penthouses by Berkeley Homes in Belgravia, London. The fires were selected for their contemporary design, easy installation and high energy efficiency. They consist of single-sided and double-sided tunnel models. Berkeley Homes selected DRU because of their unique PowerVent® flue system. Due to the configuration of the apartments, the flues had to be extended up to 64 metres throughout the service ducts in the complex, with most of the fires having external PowerVent® terminals on the roof.

The project sits at the southern end of Holland Park and occupies an area of 30.000 m2. The site is part of a wider £5.7 billion development on the Great Western (GWR) and East Coast Mainlines. For the next 17 years at least, it will serve as a crucial maintenance facility for Hitachi Rail Europe’s service delivery operations.

The hugely important decision would demand that only the best products be used and the final specification would settle on some 610m2 of Taraflex® vinyl sports flooring in ‘Maple’ from international flooring specialist Gerflor. Anthony Mynett, Director, Carpet Services (Cardiff) Ltd commented, “we are the preferred flooring contractor at the college and chose Gerflor’s Taraflex sports flooring as it conformed perfectly to the college’s requirements.” Adding, “Taraflex Evolution is unique as it covers a Granwood floor surface.”

Council architects required a solution to access essential services housed in raised flooring including the school’s sprinkler network, hot and cold water supplies and electric and data cabling. The covers were installed by A. Andrews and Sons to cover a continuous run of 75 metres of floor space with additional multipart units also fitted onto adjoining legs. The access covers were designed to be in-filled with industrial grade carpet to match the surrounding area.

Howe Green access covers were selected for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s studio theatre renovation project ‘The Other Place’, in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The covers were required to provide routine and emergency access to underfloor ducting services throughout the building. Howe Green supplied a number of 7500 Series Medium Duty Floor Access Covers. The access covers are ideal for areas that require heavy loading as they are highly durable. Main contractor, BAM Construction, fitted the panels on a suspended concrete slab. Once installed, they were infilled with K-screed followed by a resin finish.

A robust material and system had to be produced. Howe Green supplied the 5000 Series Light Duty Floor Access Cover to provide easy and safe access to the essential building services concealed under the flooring within the atrium. The 5000 Series cover lay flush with the flooring to prevent any slips or trips.

The cable car crosses the Thames from Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks and links two former Olympic sites. A bespoke aluminium bar was also designed and made for the project. The bar comprises a decorative trim featuring a semi-circular section with a 10-metre radius and a 6mm visible edge.

Ensuring an excellent aesthetic finish, Tekne fitted four covers and inlaid each frame with resin flooring to match the surrounding area. Flooring specialists DMC Contracts Ltd required a network of access points within the station. They wanted to ensure that essential underfloor drainage, mechanical and electrical services could be reached quickly and easily. The 7500 Series specially designed recessed lids enabled the panels to be tiled with Quiligotti Terrazzo floor tiles. The result - an uninterrupted and continuous surface in the station's south concourse and Grade II listed porte-cochère.

The revolving door complemented the modern and attractive interior and prevented through draft which otherwise may have posed a problem with the entrance opening directly into the reception area. This revolving door was fitted with a fully automatic in-ground electric mechanism and microprocessor control unit. Safety features are also built in and activated by infrared detectors and overload detection.

Hull's Preston Road Estate recently saw 130 artists use 22 empty houses for unique graffiti artworks in a weekend-long takeover. Hundreds of litres of Sandtex masonry paint were donated to the Bankside Gallery street art collective to create blank canvases on the houses for the artists to paint over. The takeover drew artists and visitors from across the country, and has put pride back into the community. A similar event took place last year, and Humberside Fire & Rescue Service has since reported a 41 per cent drop in vandalism on derelict properties that feature the murals.

For one of the world’s largest self-service bag drop zone in Gatwick North Terminal SAS designed a bespoke, hand-formed 45° angle bulkhead to surround the SAS200 islands. Presenting a clean finish, the 'knife-edge' feature provides a precision-engineered and dramatic aesthetic. This architectural metalwork solution frames the ceiling islands and stands out against the dark grey ceiling. SAS600 rafts were specified over walkways to guide visitors from the entrance to the main check-in area. This design aesthetic and the ease of integration with signs fulfilled the client brief to improve airport ‘wayfinding’.
