With over 57,000 sq ft of sustainable workspace, it is home to world-leading companies and start-ups across the legal, financial, technology and media sectors.BGY has used INTRAsystems products in several projects and the team are firm fans of INTRAshape and the creative flexibility it offers. So, they had INTRAshape in mind when designing their striking lobby concept. The full width Entrance Matting is as expected, but the design feature of inset fibres within the geometric tiles pushes creative options and challenges expectations from Entrance Matting.INTRAform Follows FunctionBGY specified INTRAform DM low profile in the revolving doors and full width across the primary section of the lobby for clean lines as well as clean and dry feet. The secondary intricate INTRAshape and tile scheme adds creative impact while providing extra absorbency and scrubbing function. They chose multi-directional rubber inserts within the revolving doors to cope with direct water ingress. Then, INTRAlux Elite fibres span the full-width of the entrance to soak up excess water. They selected Grey 606 fibres as a neutral yet practical palette, while co-ordinating with the geometric tiled section, which reflects the ceiling details.A Perfect Fitting PrototypeOur client shared their concepts early in 2022, so we worked closely with them to make their vision come to life. From initial drawings to refining grout tolerances and tile dimensions, we collaborated to get the right specification. INTRA developed prototypes to test in situ and thanks to careful planning and precision measurements, those prototypes went into final production with no dimensional changes. The result looks incredible and proves what’s possible with creativity, collaboration and a keen eye for detail!

Forbo Flooring Systems

A former pub located in the heart of Taporley village, Cheshire, has been converted into a luxury health and welbeing centre, featuring a state-of-the-art-gym, treatment rooms and apartments for staff use. Instinct Gym and Wellbeing aims to help improve the health and mental wellbeing of the local community through new initiatives. When it came to selection the best floor coverings, having worked with JA Flooring on previous projects  Enigma Holdings Group, the owners of the building, called upon the flooring contractor once more. As aesthetics and durability were key objectives of the project, JA Flooring advised the use of an array of solutions from Forbo Flooring Systems’ portfolio including its Allura luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), which played a significant role in the renovation works. The natural wood and stone aesthetic, combined with the benefits of strong, comfortable vinyl tiles, meant that Allura was installed in the gym, treatment rooms, spin studios and circulation areas. In the treatment rooms where a more serene surrounding was required, Allura Wood in the Whitewash Elegant Oak colourway was used.In the entrance and reception area, a bespoke Coral Logo entrance flooring mat was produced to reinforce the Instinct Gym and Wellbeing branding – helping to create that all important first impression, whilst offering protection in extreme traffic conditions and maximum functional performance. Finally, Tessera Earthscape carpet tiles in Iceberg were installed in the apartments; and in the changing facilities and kitchens, the Surestep range in various neutral colourways helped to complement the overall sophisticated interior of the health and wellbeing centre.

Heythrop Park - F. Ball products do the groundwork at £40 million hotel refurb

Ball, F and Co Ltd

Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound and F46 pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive have led the way in refurbishing floors at Heythrop Park, near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire, following its acquisition by Warner Leisure Hotels, as part of a four-year, £40 million renovation.Flooring contractors were commissioned to install a range of floorcoverings throughout the site’s public areas, including in the 300-year-old, Grade II-listed manor house, which is set in a 440-acre country estate, as well as the adjoining hotel complex. The project included work in the reception, two ground-floor theatres, bar, restaurant and lounge areas, as well as connecting staircases and corridors, in the modern part of the hotel.Stopgap 1200 Pro high-performance levelling compound was used to raise subfloor levels so that LVT floorcoverings and inlaid carpet would sit perfectly flush with previously installed ceramic tiles, with areas divided by custom-made CAT brass edging strips. Stopgap Micro Rapid fast-setting, fast-drying floor finishing compound was used to address minor subfloor imperfections.Stopgap 1200 Pro was also used to create a perfectly smooth surface for grey loose-lay Forbo Coral carpet tiles in the entranceway of the reception, where heavy-duty made-to-measure Newhay grid entrance well matting was installed.Behind the reception desk, Plusfloor concrete-effect luxury vinyl tiles were installed with Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive, which provides a high bond strength that increases as it is trafficked, as well as strong initial tack, meaning that tiles or planks won’t move around while working. The indefinite open time offered by the product negates the risk of late placement, another advantage when there’s complex designs and patterns.Contractors installed bespoke Brintons carpet in a small seating area on one side of the reception and in front of the entrances to the larger of the hotel’s two ground-floor theatres and Late Lounge Bar, as well as on the steps and accessibility ramp leading from the reception to the 120m2 area, using a dual bond system. This involved using Styccobond F3 to create a permanent bond between carpet and underlay, with the Styccobond F40 providing a peelable bond between the underlay and subfloor. In the theatre, where guests can enjoy live music, drama and comedy performances, Stopgap 1200 Pro was used to patch repair existing subfloors, including where stanchions had been removed, before installing custom-made dark black and blue Newhay carpet.Bespoke Newhay carpet was also installed in the Late Lounge Theatre, which was also furnished with an Amtico wood-effect LVT dancefloor adhered with Styccobond F46. Styccobond F46 was used to install Harlequin Standfast high-performance vinyl sheet on both of the theatres’ stages.Amtico Signature basketweave, wood-effect LVTs were installed in the Late Lounge Bar up to seating areas with bespoke Newhay carpet and ceramic tiles around the bar, as well as on the steps leading to the Late Lounge Theatre. A feature was created in the centre of the room with a large area of herringbone wood-effect LVTs and a border of Amtico Signature Cirrus Twilight grey planks.Similarly, in the first floor ‘Pub and Kitchen’, Karndean ‘Van Gogh’ salvaged wood-effect LVTs were installed up to the bar area, where a border was created using Karndean ‘riven slate’ grey ‘Knight Tiles’, and areas with tables and chairs, where Alternative Flooring ‘Anywhere Rope’ natural carpet was installed. The LVTs were installed up to ceramic tiles around the bar and seating areas with bespoke Newhay carpet.Plusfloor wood floorcoverings were installed on the main staircase leading from the reception to the first and second floors, extending onto the first floor landing and lounge area, using Styccobond B95.Where there were steps in the areas being renovated, including the main staircase, Stycco Flex rapid-curing, flexible tube adhesive was used to affix custom-made CAT brass stair nosings.

Ceramics reinterpret traditional architectural styleInnovative living concept for the future: A multi-generational house in Madrid combines traditional architectural style with a modern VHF ceramic façade. In the middle of Madrid's lively backdrop stands a small architectural jewel that is much more than just a residential building. The project "Beyond the Family Kin Housing" stands for the values and visions of a modern, multigenerational society. This multi-generational house embodies a concept for lifelong living in all the details of its design principles characterized by durability and flexibility. The choice of ceramic façade and tile design was not a random decision.Developed by Ignacio G Galán and OF Architects, this house was created with the aim of meeting the needs of different generations and enabling lifelong living. The open room design, characterized by seamless transitions, invites a variety of alternative forms of living and at the same time promotes a sense of community.Striking façade designThe bold exterior of the house is justified by its screed roof and the blue ceramic façade of the KeraTwin system by Agrob Buchtal, contrasted by the striking appearance of corrugated steel plates. The façade is not only for aesthetics. It combines several tectonic and technological strategies to bring energy efficiency and environmental quality to the project. In order to ensure the longevity of the house, the builders opt for a rear-ventilated ceramic façade on the recommendation of the architects. It is robust and durable, but at the same time can also be flexibly dismantled and converted. Construction and ceramic slabs offer the resilient basic concept of architecture by Ignacio G Galán and OF Architects the best suitable basis for sustainably connecting the present and the future. The movable windows in the roof are coupled with automatic blinds that control heat and lighting to create a well-ventilated and comfortable interior. Solar panels, supported by the distinctive green steel structure on the roof, support the operation of underfloor heating throughout the house.Energy-efficient tile designWith its focus on energy efficiency, barrier-free design and aesthetic design, the builders are largely relying on the combination of underfloor heating with thermally conductive tiles in the interior. This contributes 100% to the energy efficiency of the house, because compared to parquet or other floors, tiles allow heat to be transferred to the room faster and more efficiently. The duo is easy to install, sustainable in use and unbeatably efficient in terms of service life. In summer, the tiles are nice and cool and welcome and often used, especially in warm countries like Spain. With the natural modern material tile, the architects make a comfortable and healthy room atmosphere possible for residents of all ages in their showcase project.Inclusive room conceptModern design is a central theme that is considered in both the interior and exterior of the house to promote the inclusion and participation of all residents. While new buildings in the area tend to shift most of social life to their rear terraces, they promote the formation of communities and social connections with a courtyard, among other things. The open design of the ground floor, with a direct connection to the street, also stimulates the neighbourhood community. A short ramp leads from street level to the entrance. Inside the house follows a seamless sequence of spaces that can meet all needs, from toddlers to seniors, from scooters to "wheelchairs", can be explored and inhabited comfortably and safely: on each of the three floors in varying degrees of autonomy and community. In this innovative project, the architects saw ceramics not only as façade, wall or floor coverings, but as an integral part of inclusive healthy architecture. Last but not least, it will be thanks to the curtain wall and rear-ventilated ceramic façade that the house will be able to adapt flexibly to the different lifestyles of its residents and changing needs in the future, if necessary.

Acoustics for learning environments

Acoustics for learning environments

Autex Acoustics Ltd

Adding to the Vibrancy and Culture of London’s Newest Broadcasting SchoolThis September, hundreds of students will be flooding the floors of Loughborough University’s newly renovated campus at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Formerly the Broadcasting Centre for the Olympic Games, this large scale building is now home to the highly acclaimed tertiary institute, as well as a wide range of others, from large international companies to small local businesses. The project With the direction to reinvent the space and make it particular to Loughborough University’s culture and vibrant personality, Paragon Interior Groups Senior Designer Julie Hattersley set out to ensure the client could call the space their own. By employing a unique and aesthetically pleasing design; a practical new hub for students to learn and interact was developed. Autex was engaged in the project early on, at the specification stage, to ensure a level of acoustic performance conducive to a tertiary learning environment. Inspired by industrial design, Loughborough University boasts exposed features, including the building’s services and concrete walls. Hattersley required an acoustic solution that blended in with the overall feel of the space but provided accents of style and flare. Through collaboration with Autex, Hattersley used a variety of standard and custom products to create unique ceiling and wall features that gave each area its own style. “We just loved the versatility of Autex products and how we could create a solution that fits with every space. Having one company that could achieve all the design requirements needed was fantastic”.The solutionAs soon as you enter the hard surfaced atrium, complete with polished floors, high ceilings and surrounded by windows, the potential for both high and low frequencies to reverberate around the space become instantly clear. Cube™By vertically suspending fifty 1200mm x 800mm 24mm thick Autex Cube™ in rows above the atrium, the carefully considered spacing is attributed to an all-round frequency absorption. By keeping the distance of the vertical hanging fins at about 300mm and the bottom of the fin around 800mm from the ceiling, the surface area absorption gets multiplied as sound waves bounce between the fins and ceiling. Vertiface®Combined with the neutral colour of Cube Savoye; Autex have laminated their 100 percent polyester fabric Vertiface® to the face of selected fins. These added highlights of (colour) Phantom, create a standout feature that matches the industrial design whilst providing hints of personality and excitement. As you lead through from the atrium the next piece of eye catching acoustic design that hits you are the floating Cube rafts that keep the themed colour Savoye. Custom cut into a variety of shapes these suspended 24mm thick panels provide an aesthetic display that also combines localised acoustic absorption with the continued seamless design that Julie Hattersley implements with precision. 3D TilesFrom the Trapezium Lattice baffles, to the multiple 3D Tiles applications, the attention to geometric shapes, colours and textures throughout this design have been carefully chosen to provide consistency in this modern and exciting place to learn. These suspended features continue throughout the building, providing break-out spaces with multiple levels of acoustic absorption, pertinent to task at hand in each area. This achieves a highly effective acoustic treatment; controlling reverberation while not taking away from the openness and collaborative design of the areas. The resultImplementing a range of different suspended features including the aforementioned Trapezium Lattice, suspended Cube and the 3D Tiles fixed to floating rafts, Hattersley has created the impression of zones. This practice of creating different areas specific to different activities without creating barriers is a technique that is being introduced to commercial buildings and schools worldwide with high levels of success. This helps the occupants define, collaboration, concentration and high social activities within the space, and uses the suspended acoustics panels as an unobtrusive guide to their work zone. Another stand-out for Julie Hattersley was having “the flexibility to shape the [Autex] products without compromising the quality”; Autex were able to draw on previous product developments to create a new 3D Tile for the space. Using a heat moulding process, Autex were able to develop the 3D Tile S-5.46 a Triangle shaped tile that simply adhered to the wall using the 3D Tile Clips. Again using neutrals and pops of colour, the tiles turn empty wall space into creative works of art, giving the modern aesthetic of depth and texture that beautifully compliments the furnishings and geometric lines in the carpeting. With the University ready to open its doors, Julie Hattersley and the client are extremely pleased with the acoustics. “The space feels very comfortable and peaceful”, says Julie, “even though there are three sides of double glazing, there is no echo. The students and staff can trust that collaborations and conversation had in one area will stay there.” The innovative and forward-thinking of Julie Hattersley and her vision to combine Autex Interior Acoustics into this space will match the forward-thinking and creative minds that Loughborough University shapes for the future.

Minimalist design and style for a perfect outdoor setting, Atlas Concorde's concrete-effect porcelain tiles add a touch of glamor to the poolside of a private French villa.Essential shapes, simplicity, and hospitality are the main aspects that describe the exterior of a charming private villa in St. Emilion, a town that’s associated with good French wine. It’s a simple outdoor space that incorporates modern technology to support comfort and reflects a close attention to detail, where the choice of colours and materials represent the basis for the decoration of a space that embodies the principles of a modern, minimalist outdoor style. And it’s based on these design needs that the concrete-effect tilesof Atlas Concorde were called upon to clad the edges of the swimming pool outside the villa. Applied in a neutral shade in sync with the overall style, the concrete-effect surfaces adorn the space with a single continuous material, capable of transforming the environment into an oasis of intimacy, conviviality, and relaxation. The outdoor flooring makes it possible to project one’s style outside in safety and continuity, extending the design possibilities. Using a dry laying process, the outdoor tiles were placed directly on the ground, ensuring easy laying and the possibility of quick removal for any future changes. With their non-slip Grip finish and 20 mm thickness, the porcelain slabs selected for the poolside are an optimal, safe solution for the outdoor space. Resistant to external heat and the chemical attack of certain products, the outdoor tiles also maintain their flatness and original size, while also hindering the proliferation of bacteria, molds and fungi, thus ensuring a high level of healthiness. Combining beauty and practicality, the outdoor space and swimming pool of the French villa convey an atmosphere of relaxation and hospitality in harmony with the evocative setting that surrounds the private residence.

Capturing the traditional charm of the Tudor period, London-based design studio, Upcircle, designed Chester’s newest student accommodation by taking inspiration from the city’s history and architecture. With the help of Forbo Flooring Systems’ comprehensive portfolio, including its recently refreshed Allura Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) collection, a warm, striking and sophisticated interior was created.
