The Hale Country Club has a rural setting but only four miles from the hustle and bustle of Manchester airport. When the Hut Group purchased the club they looked to enhance the appearance throughout the facility. Phase two was the health suite and vitality pool. Sauna360 designed four new thermal rooms in the area and replaced the existing grp tiled vitality pool with a beautiful stainless steel design. The internal space was opened up with large glass frontage to all but the steam room. Two feature showers with cool mists and tropical rain were added together with an ice station.

Recently refurbished, Vodafone’s Manchester office is the first building in the UK to combine two electric moveable walls, delivering an entirely automated system for dividing room space. Working with architects, CMI Workplace and main contractor, Overbury, Style was specified to install a fully automatic Dorma Moveo Glazed ComfortDrive moveable wall adjacent to a Skyfold, the fully automatic, vertically rising operable wall, housed in the ceiling cavity. At the push of a button, the walls open and close with ease, offering a phenomenal lab tested 50dB Rw acoustic integrity for the glass system, and 51dB Rw for the Skyfold.

The existing Bushey Grove health suite was a stark, clinical looking area with gloomy sauna and steam plus a difficult to maintain whirlpool spa with all the plant two floors below. TyloHelo's design concept was to open up the space with glass frontage and dividing walls between thermal rooms and create more comfortable relaxation areas. The design was contemporary with large format tiles in warm, natural colours. The thermal suite comprised a Finnish Salt sauna, Salt inhalation steam room, Herbal sauna, Bucket shower, Feature shower, Ice feature and three heated benches.

This grand Edwardian property began life as commercial premises, but has recently been given a new lease of life by urban regeneration experts Stockwool Design. The site near the City of London, known as Sterling Mansions, has been transformed into 59 quality apartments for Berkeley Homes. We designed, manufactured and installed 216 traditional timber flush casement windows with feature moldings. Fitted with high acoustic double glazing on the Leman Street elevation, the windows achieved an impressive 45 dB Rw acoustic performance rating (55.4 ACf / 12 / 44.1 Low-E glass).

A family business, Twinfix has been involved in the polycarbonate roof glazing market for nearly 30 years. Its innovative Multi-Link-Panel has been used in many markets, such as in the replacement of broken glass or failed PVC in station canopies and depot roof lights, where its patented fixing method results in incredibly quick installation times, a real bonus when working with limited possession times.

No.1 Forbury Place in Reading, UK, is the largest butt-jointed fire-rated glazing construction in Europe and features Vetrotech's oversize fire-resistant glass, Contraflam Mega. The project comprises more than 1,400 m2 of Vetrotech’s EI30 fire resistant glazing solution: Contraflam. On the ground floor of the 8-story atrium Contraflam Mega single panes are installed with heights of 4.5 m and weights up to almost 0.5 t. The 4-sided vitreous atrium from the first to the seventh floor has been fully equipped with Vetrotech’s Contraflam Structure flush glazing solution.

University Arms Hotel, the oldest hotel in Cambridge, dates from the 1840s when it first opened as a coaching inn. Extensions followed in the 1930s an 1960s; but in 2013 John Simpson Architects began returning cohesion and grandeur to the building. The aim was 190 bedrooms boasting 5-star luxury. We were proud to be awarded the 14-month contract to design, supply and install 300 timber box sash windows, 50 balcony French doors, and 28 curved-on-plan sash windows. We also produced large bespoke entrance screens, and undertook the restoration of leaded light glass.

Manchester New Square is a highly innovative urban project in Manchester City Centre. What makes Manchester New Square particularly interesting is that it has been constructed using off-site manufacturing and that is why NorDan were the perfect supplier for this development. As we own all of our factories, we have complete control over production schedules and we can cope with the tight, demanding schedules that off-site manufacturing requires. Our product also comes as a full set, complete with ironmongery and glass, so that they can be fitted straight into the concrete panels and moved onto site.

The £44m state of the art Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) brings together world-leading expertise in brain mapping with the very latest in brain imaging and brain stimulation. This multi award-winning project is home to the Clinical Research Facility and is part of Cardiff University’s Maindy Park site.The new building is four times larger than the old facility, meaning staff from different departments now benefit from being housed under one roof, allowing for increased collaboration and innovation. Research carried out at the centre aims to help scientists understand the causes and find treatments for brain changes that lead to disordered cognition and mental health issues.This hub offers a range of facilities including an NHS standard medical suite with drug trial unit, specialist scanning suites, laboratories, office accommodation and large seminar facilities within an open-plan environment. For the interior, architects, IBI Group, chose rich materials such as wood, bold colours and geometric shapes which were complimented by Lusso’s glass partitioning. This has created a professional yet welcoming space. In keeping with the design, Lusso 105 double glazed frameless partitions were installed for offices and meeting rooms.  Fitted with interstitial blinds, users can create privacy whenever needed. The use of glazed partitions also makes best use of the natural light and creates an inclusive space. Lusso also installed bespoke high acoustic glazed vision panels with specialist glass for the scanning suites. The overall effect is an inspirational space for research and innovation at an international level.

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) is a group of industry-led manufacturing R&D, innovation and skills facilities supported by a network of Partners across Scotland, all working together to transform the future of manufacturing and provide an innovative and multi-use hub that brings together Scotland’s brightest minds in industry, academia and the public sector.The design of the space focuses on collaboration, with a variety of private spaces specified to create areas for focused work and larger group meetings in turn.Planet, working through our northern contracting team, joined the project to provide our expertise in the design, manufacture and installation of a number of our glass partition screens and door solutions to meet the interior design by architects HLM.The standout contribution to this project was the use of Planet’s PURE20XL (38dB Rw) extended screens to produce glass meeting pods, expertly cantilevered to produce an eye-catching ‘floating’ effect. Access to the pods was provided by Planet’s high acoustic performance IsoPro glazed pivoting doors (42dB Rw). Our popular single-glazed PURE20 (38dB Rw) and double-glazed PURE100 (54dB Rw) frameless partitions were utilised for the fronts for many of the meeting rooms and laboratories — along with tech panels to house integrated room booking systems — while some extended PURE100XL screens was placed on the void edge of the digital seminar rooms.Finally, structural atrium glazing facilitated the passage of natural light deep into the internal space — perfect for the inspirational innovative environment NMIS aims to provide to its users.

ChallengeThe St Vincent New Bridges’ project is run by St Vincent de Paul, a homeless hostel that supports people who need to have a place to live and that require help to develop their daily living skills. When the charity acquired the Grade II listed building, a major refurbishment plan was put into action, and St Vincent de Paul approached CRASH for help with materials and construction work.SolutionKnauf Insulation donated over 520m2 of 100mm Knauf Insulation Loft Roll 40 for the project, which was installed by Giraffe Building Services Ltd. • The West Croydon Bus Station in London is a vital link for the millions of people every year commuting to work from the South and South East into London. The station forms a hub for over 150 buses per hour with the adjacent tram stop and West Croydon railway station providing routes to both East and West London as well as to the City and Docklands.• The redevelopment of the bus station forms part of a £50 million programme of the Main Street public pedestrianised space and transport infrastructure to transform the town centre by creating a more attractive environment in which to live, work, socialise and do business.• Designed by Transport for London’s in-house team of architects headed by Martin Eriksson, the project goal was to create a user-friendly waiting and assembly shelter to cope with a 20% increase in passenger numbers and provide a brighter more spacious environment to service the vast number of passengers using this interchange daily.The SolutionThe normal choice of construction for a translucent and weatherproof canopy would be to glaze the roof with glass. However the project team at TfL realised that Kalwall® offered a better solution in this location. It would not only solve the design requirements and contribute to a better design but would offer many other benefits over traditional glazing.For example, since Kalwall is much lighter than glass the supporting structure could be less strong and far less substantial. This meant the vertical supports were less obstructive and opened up a better view of the environment, including the very attractive St Michael’s Church located nearby which had previously been blocked from the view of waiting passengers. The corten steel (weathering steel) support could also be subtle and worked into arches and patterns meant to mirror and complement the church.Furthermore, Kalwall is visually far more attractive than glass while eliminating shadows, hotspots and glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade; all improving the experience for passengers underneath.As Kalwall diffuses natural daylight downwards and reduces vertical illumination and reflection upwards at night, it can control light pollution on the surrounding high-rise buildings while emitting a very attractive ethereal glow, making it a beacon for travellers.Maintenance-wise, Kalwall is also an effective choice. Soil and detritus are less obvious on Kalwall than on glass and cleaning is much simpler because access scaffolding is not required and maintenance staff can safely walk across its surface.The CommentsMartin Ericksson comments, “Transport for London has a long and rich design heritage. The approach to the redevelopment of West Croydon bus station has sought to build on this heritage and recognises that waiting for your bus should not just be a perfunctory experience, instead it should be a positive one enhanced by good architecture. Site constraints, high footfall and the poor design of the previous station, presented an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the difference good architecture can make through improved layout, better passenger movement and accessibility – whilst supporting the West CroydonMasterplan.Brick was chosen to connect the station to its urroundings, especially the adjacent listed church. Using Kalwall brought many advantages and benefits in relation to its lightweight yet strong structural qualities. It has helped enhance daylight transfer and protects from sunglare whilst reducing hotspots and solar gain. The material’s soft translucent qualities contrast beautifully with the building’s warmth and texture, providing a sheltered waiting environment with the added advantage of low maintenance and high performance.”

Creating a Passivhaus home Balancing sustainability and style, Sort Trae is the culmination of a retired architect’s vision for a home and creative space that blends into a South Yorkshire hillside. HEM Architects helped the client to bring this dream to life, using Knauf Insulation’s glass mineral wool insulation to achieve the incredibly high Passivhaus standards for energy efficiency. Low carbon and high comfort The client envisioned a sustainable build using Passivhaus, a voluntary standard for designing and building properties with very low energy consumption, that offer high levels of comfort for their occupants. To achieve this, the levels of air tightness and thermal performance far exceed those mandated by building regulations. FrameTherm® Slab 32 was friction-fitted within the 140mm thick timber frame walls on the first floor, while DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 was used to fill the stone-clad masonry cavity walls on the ground floor.  “We try to specify fully filled masonry cavity walls where possible, sometimes up to 200mm wide, to maximise the use of mineral wool insulation. It pays dividends for the client”, explained Liam Seaman, Architectural Technologist for HEM Architects. Thermal performance is critical to the Passivhaus approach. The FrameTherm® Slab 32 provided a calculated U-value of 0.137 W/m2K in combination with the black timber frame wall and cladding. For the masonry cavity wall on the ground floor, a fractionally higher U-value of 0.138 W/m2K was achieved using thermally broken wall ties and DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32. This has contributed to Sort Trae’s exceptional thermal efficiency. Because glass mineral wool is flexible and fibrous, slabs knit together and adapt to minor imperfections in the substrate. This tight fit contributed to an overall air change of 0.54 ach (air change per hour), comfortably below the Passivhaus standard of 0.6 ach, meaning the property is air-tight while still providing good ventilation. Sustainable practices Liam explained his reasons for choosing Knauf Insulation, “The alternative products are often oil-based and the application of these is outweighed by the environmental impact of their production and lifecycle.” Both FrameTherm® Slab 32 and DriTherm® Cavity Slab 32 are manufactured with ECOSE® Technology, Knauf Insulation’s unique bio-based binder that contains no added formaldehyde or phenol. The binder is made from natural raw materials that are rapidly renewable and is 70% less energy-intensive to manufacture than traditional binders. Knauf Insulation’s glass mineral wool insulation contains up to 80% recycled content, mostly glass bottles and jars. It is also compressed so more product can fit per pack or pallet, and less packaging is used. This means there’s more product per truck, resulting in fewer vehicles on the road, and less packaging per m2 of insulation. Achieving the Passivhaus standard In collaboration with HEM Architects and other suppliers, the client has created a stunning home and an inspiring set-up for her loom-weaving workshop. “It is general practice for us to specify Knauf Insulation as standard because we find the product information available to be really clear and useful”, Liam added. Knauf Insulation’s practical, detailed product information made it HEM Architects’ first choice to achieve the Passivhaus standard for thermal performance. 

URSA TERRA Glass Wool specified at major regeneration scheme  Construction giant Kier, has specified over 3,000 square metres of URSA TERRA Glass Wool as part of a £30million regeneration scheme at Manor Street, Braintree, Essex. The scheme will help rejuvenate and revitalise the area, providing essential new facilities and an attractive public realm whilst cultivating a vibrant town centre destination for the local community. Under the ambitious scheme, Kier chose URSA glass wool, as core insulation specification. The architects opted for URSA Walltec Black 32 at 100mm, 140mm and 200mm thickness along with URSA Hometec Roll 35 in a range of thicknesses for use throughout the development. Ian Claydon of URSA explained: “We were first involved in the scheme in July 2020 when approached by our distributor, Encon Insulation (Newmarket) to discuss a series of architect’s drawings and design the specification for a number of different wall types including traditional masonry cavity and rainscreen cladding with both cladding panels and brick outer leaf.  “We undertook numerous U-value calculations covering 18 different wall types. We also offered advice on the ‘buildability’ of some wall types, effect of linear thermal bridges, the fire performance of the walls and fire performance of the insulation. “The specification has evolved since with Kier adding metal roof insulation to their chosen product range and we are now providing a complete insulation solution. “This scheme typifies how our glass wool products are the perfect fit for almost any wall design or construction type that can potentially make up a building. It’s far reaching benefits in terms of performance, durability and flexibility see URSA TERRA specified time and time again in both commercial and residential schemes.” Ian added: “Working closely with Encon Insulation we will be supplying products to site on an as needed basis. Whilst we are facing challenges with imports caused by both Brexit and Covid, we are still devising solutions which allow us to retain strong stock levels and cater for the demands of a large site such as this.” The mixed-use scheme at Braintree will include 35 new homes, a 70-room hotel, health provision, new bus interchange, two-storey car park, and enhanced public realm, which will complement Braintree’s historic Town Hall and provide the perfect backdrop for a new café restaurant. A new healthcare facility will sit at the centre of the development and will also provide a home for Mid Essex CCG’s first Livewell Hub including a GP surgery, pharmacy and further preventative healthcare services. At the centre also will be an accessible garden area which the general public are encouraged to utilise, enjoy and relax surrounded by existing public amenities offered by the library, museum and the historic, Grade II listed, Braintree Town Hall. A new car park across two floors will provide additional parking capacity whist a new hotel feeds into the wider tourism strategy for the district. Partnering remains critical within the wider URSA approach. Technical staff are keen to collaborate with clients at the initial design stage to support the best specification available. Ian concluded: “The Braintree scheme represents the very best of what URSA can offer – from a true sense of partnering with the client to the application of a vast range of products designed for multiple specifications. We continue to demonstrate our agility and strength as a business and are able to present products with assured confidence.” 

A major part of the project was restoring the building’s original wood windows, which had been covered over with aluminum windows 30 years ago. The aging units—242 in total—had suffered from fogging, failing glass, air leakage, & broken balances that rendered them inoperable. Window manufacturer Re-View, were selected to restore the windows. Re-View restored the windows using restoration epoxies and replicated Accoya wood parts. Re-view chose Accoya due to its durability and 50 year guarantee. As forecasted at the start of construction in 2013, the work will be completed in June 2017.

ASF were approached to replace some tired yet serviceable handrailing at the old Bradford Library in a change of use project. ASF used the popular 5006 posts with mitred tops and supplied a large central double handrail alongside a single handrail for a walled section. There was also a small section of single handrail supplied for a small side entry to the area. Pleasingly, ASF mitred the top of the bollard to match the angle of descent of the steps rather than just do them at the usual 45 degrees.ASF combined this with glass balustrade for the elevated walkway on the building concourse, which can be seen on some of the images.

For these headquarters based in Barcelona, a former industrial site was reformed, to adapt the structure to the brand needs . The architect explains that “understanding the design of the interior spaces [was] an important element of branding capable of generat [ing ] brand value”, according to Stefano Colli .On the big glazed façades, Premium Plus roller blinds are used with a Polyscreen ® 403 in Slate color . They are in tune with the brand colors and style, and also they provide optimal solar management . Aluminum Venetian blinds in Smokey Grey finish are used for the internal glassed partition to provide intimacy in working spaces . Both systems cover the sunlight management needs as well as they turn into a key decorative item .

‘Flooring by Henton’ opted for F. Ball products to achieve a high quality LVT floor finish in the company’s own showroom. Firstly, contractors removed old carpet, LVT and wood floorcoverings from the 90m2 floor of the showroom. Contractors next applied Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound over the entire subfloor to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings. The showroom has a large glass front, therefore, Styccobond F48 PLUS high temperature grade vinyl adhesive was selected to install wood-effect vinyl planks to ensure the floorcoverings would hold firmly in place when exposed to extreme temperatures.

As a stunning answer to the Royal Danish Opera House across the water, the Royal Danish Playhouse sits in a prominent location on Copenhagen’s harbour front. Its structure is about the interplay between three compositional elements: an oak-clad promenade standing above the water; a brick stage building and copper-clad tower; and the green glass of the building’s overhanging first floor, which gives the actors and production team spectacular views.For this striking building’s high-traffic toilet facilities, d line products play a reliable supporting role to a dramatic black interior punctuated by lipstick-red doors and bulbed, dressing room-style mirrors.

In close consultation the decision to use DucoSun Cubic 300, combining functionality and aesthetics, was made quickly. The unique rectangular louvre blades in DucoSun Cubic 300 not only ensure that the heat from solar radiation gets absorbed efficiently, but they also give a sleek, linear accent which definitely adds architectural value. The blades of DucoSun Cubic 300 were installed vertically in front of the glass windows. Vertical solar shading guarantees maximum privacy, while still allowing an adequate outside view at the same time. Using DucoSun Cubic 300, we were able to achieve the desired aesthetics and performance requirements.

To meet the client’s requirements of wanting sliding doorsets rather than pivoting doors on the meeting rooms, Komfort’s Sonik Slide doors were installed. This project gave us the opportunity to use Sonik Slide as our new acoustic pocket double glazed sliding door, which can be specified as a single or double door set within its own unique frameless glass. On this project, Sonik Slide double door sets were specified and installed. Sonik Slide has been designed to focus on ease of installation and to allow light to flood through the workplace whilst ensuring high acoustic performance is maintained.

Eastcheap Court has been newly re-designed by Trehearne Architects and Fletcher Preist, to provide best-in-class office space within a smart controlled environment.We manufactured and installed a precast concrete reception desk for the newly redesigned reception area. The desk was constructed from two large precast sections, and we used our special eco mix of glass fibre-reinforced concrete for this project. It was created in a White Smooth finish and was had-polished and assembled onsite. We also added LED lighting strips to provide evenly distributed lighting around the area. It was a successful build that the client was very happy with.

Aluminium and Equitone rainscreen cladding, cast glass panels, terracotta tiles and vertical aluminium fins give the new 1,200-space multi-storey a bright and modern look. In fact, it’s hard to believe the building (which also houses a new bus station) is really a car park. “There were a few challenges, which Maple addressed really well – ten out of ten for communication,” said Galliford Try’s site manager, Tom Wright. “When you look at the finished product, it’s all been worthwhile. The mix of feature fins, laser-cut and terracotta panels looks great – very close to the architect’s impression.”

Located in the heart of tourist London, St James’s Park Café occupies a prime spot overlooking Duck Island and St James’s Lake. The curved wooden building features a sweeping 200-seat roof terrace and floor to ceiling glass windows where diners can while away an hour or two admiring the infamous pelicans and black swans of St James’s Park. With 5 million visitors to the park each year, café operators, Benugo, have quite a challenge maintaining service and facilities. As part of a recent major re-development of London’s 40 year old National Army Museum there were a number of fire safety requirements to be considered. Large areas of glass characterise this modern building, enhancing the high ceilings and spacious exhibition rooms requiring correspondingly large internal fire doors. Moralt’s Laminesse FireSmoke 54mm door cores offered the architect the ability to achieve the requirement of high and wide double doors fire rated to 60 minutes. Officially re-opened in March 2017 by Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Phillip, it has been transformed into five bright thematic galleries.

Komfort worked in partnership with GHI to design and support with supply and install for all Polar frame works, door frames and glass doors. Komfort’s Polar collection was used throughout the project. Double glazed Polar’s simplistic method of installation, relocatability and powerful acoustic properties made it an intelligent option for this fit-out. Whilst, Polar single glazed minimalist form facilitated speed of erection without compromising structural stability and rigidity. Deflection heads +/- 25mm were used for both systems. Additionally, the Sonik collection provided enhanced acoustic performance whilst also creating an open-plan modern feel.

LAMILUX were chosen by the façade contractor, to undertake this specialist element within their glazing package. By using 220mm deep mullion profiles, LAMILUX were able to design a system structurally capable of completely self-supporting. The 25m X 6m self-spanning rooflight removed the requirement for additional internal structural support such as steel beams - saving time and reducing the costs. High performance glazing was essential to reduce solar heat gain and heat losses. 40 fixed glass panels, each measuring 1.2 x 2.9m and weighing 150kg were used to reduce the buildings energy consumption, without compromising daylight intake.

Winchmore School has completed a washroom refit specifying Franke’s Uridan waterless urinal pods. The Uridan system is available exclusively through Franke Sissons in the UK and Ireland and is manufactured from glass reinforced plastic which is far more resilient than ceramic and provides reassuring security against vandalism. Adrian Bailey, Facilities Manager at Winchmore School explained, “We wanted a waterless solution to reduce water use and maintenance costs. There are other water-free products available for this type of installation but we wanted assurance it would stand the wear and tear of secondary school pupils and be completely odour free.”

Gripsure non-slip decking was chosen for the Samsung offices in Chertsey, South West London, which underwent a refurbishment in the Spring of 2021. 800m2 of our Contemporary profile was installed, replacing decaying slippery deck boards, creating safe access for employees to enjoy the outdoor spaces that surround the building.The smooth profile, with two anti-slip inserts, allow for leaves and debris to be easily swept away, ensuring the decked areas overlooking the lake can be easily maintained and enjoyed safely all year round. Assured passive fire protection for a spectacular central atrium in Dublin city centre’s largest and most prestigious new commercial development has been provided by over 300m2 of Promat SYSTEMGLAS® Ferro. The system was selected thanks to its 360 degree ‘wheel of assurance’, which ensures all the fire resistant glazing screens are checked for compliance at every stage from design and specification, through manufacture and installation. The proven butt-jointed, steel framed fire resistant glazing system has been used to create all the glass screens which encapsulate the atrium at the heart of No. 1 Dublin Landings.

Wedding ceremonies are made more peaceful in the Grade II and II* Listed Reading Town Hall following acoustic secondary glazing adaptations to block noise from the town centre. 23 units were installed. Each gothic arch was treated with a combination of transom coupled secondary glazed units with a Series 42 curved fixed light system affixed at the top. Series 10 horizontal sliding units were specified for the lower units on the wider windows, whereas the Series 45 side hung casement was selected for the narrower windows. 6.4mm acoustic laminate glass was specified which reduced noise levels by 40-45dB.

Nestling on the border of Dorset and Hampshire, sitting atop the cliffs at Highcliffe; is the Grade I Listed Highcliffe castle.
